3ds Max Modeling :: Tweak / Remodel Existing Model?
Feb 19, 2014
I have recently purchased a 3d model of a car which I need to make 3d print ready for a project. I have come a long way since, getting to know the software and finishing all of the chassis. However, whilst editing parts of the car's bottom side, I noticed that when viewed from this perspective it is badly out of shape. When compared to a real model, one can see that the body is way too narrow in between the tires, making the whole thing kinda look like a bone. I have attached pictures of both, the unedited 3d model I purchased as well as a real model which I know to be very accurate to the real thing, to show you what I mean.

How can I make Displace modifier to use objects existing mapping? Because when I apply a new Displace, the modifier makes a new mapping, even if i check "Use Existing Mapping".
See what i mean? I want those "cracks" to follow uv not a displace mapping

I have an existing mesh based on quads.(Similar to how 'garment maker' generates a flat mesh, but wrapped around my existing mesh while keeping (close to) the same shape.
Is there a way to do that? Most remeshers will generate quads but I really need equally-spaced triangles to reform the mesh.

Is there an easy way to change all the model geometry from New to Existing in one easy command? I drew a three story building complete with structural columns, beasms, curtain walls, doors, walls, floors, etc. and I need to now make it all 'Existing'.

The company I work for is a wooden packaging company. We recently purchased Inventor to open large file models from John Deere to design a wooden pallet/crate to package the part. Basically, what I am asking for 'get started'. I know how to pull in files, but I am just trying to figure out how to design packaging around this existing model.

how one might model an existing drainage channel.
Here’s the scenario – field crews are going to collect data for a 500 ft long concrete (trapezoidal) drainage channel. The bottom width varies from 7 ft to 19 ft wide with vertical walls varying from 4 ft to 7’ high. The channel will be filled and capped.
I considered using one of the channel subassemblies with Civil 3d and establish targets along the existing channel top and bottom of walls. However, I don’t see that the stock subassemblies are intended for this and don’t really lend themselves to perform this. I suppose the other option is to use linkwidthandslope subassemblies and use multiple targets for inside bottoms, inside tops and outside tops of walls.

I have made a part - a motor that has four holes.
Now I'm trying to make another part, which will be aluminium plate that needs to have holes in exactly same points as the motor. My assembly containts both that parts.
What I'm trying to do is to reference in sketch a point that comes from different part (motor).
I could do it by hand, make it look that the holes are on top of each other but then there will be an error which doesn't seem professional.
In some tutorial on yt I have only found that using points one can reference the holes more easily, but it didn't show how.

I'm trying to cut up a model into components. I'm using QuickSlice but it doesn't seem to be functioning the way it's supposed to. It's a building with straight edges so it should be really straightforward. In perspective view I select an edge which is just a single edge running between two vertices.I then press QuickSlice. Then with snap to vertex on, I select both vertices in turn but the slice runs off right around the back of my model in a seemingly random way. I don't get it- I'm following the instructions in the description.

At this present time I would consider myself a high end beginner at 3ds max.
I am currently trying to model a mech and have been trying to smooth it. I have made progress but I don't know where to take the geometry from here. There are numerous smoothing errors in the model and I understand why they are happening, I just don’t know the right way to fix them. You will understand what I mean if you have a look at the model (I've attached it so you can download it).
For example, in the first image you can see an error, if I extended the edges this may get rid of it, but then I get the result in the second image, and it doesn't look right .

I want to model a hollow stone shaped (see images attached) object in 3D max that will be 3D printed. The stone shape has to have a separate top and bottom so that I can embed electronics in it afterwards. My problem is I am finding it difficult to create a lip that will enable the top & bottom to securely fit into one another, so that when someone picks it up it will not fall apart. I was thinking of using a system like the attached image Lip_Profile.gif. I have no problem modelling something like this on a regular box/sphere using a lathe, however I can't find a technique to model this on irregular objects. Any technique that would enable me to model such a fitted lid?

How do i add a symmetry to my box model in 3dsmax where when i move a vertex, edge, polygon etc on one side the same thing happens on the other side instantly. I've seen this done in zbrush and xsi wondering how i can do this on 3dsmax. I've used the symmetry modifier but the other side does not move when i edit the other.

I need to model a cloth in Maya 2012 as a part of a college assignment. I have attached a jpeg of my pre-production artwork, in it you can see the yellow cloth placed on two wooden planks. At the moment I am modelling the cloth by adjusting the vertices, but find it to be a bit tedious. Is there any other way for me get effective results. Since I am a beginner I would like to know the the different ways a little in detail.

I trying to model a mountain whith a spiky look. what its the best method to do it?
things that did not work:
1) Use a displacment map. there is not satellite images in the web. (good quality images)
2) Use Z-Brush. I really dont have time to learn another program.
Actually im trying poly-model technique, starting whit a plane, whith the image as a background, and guessing the perspective.
I'm in the right way?.

The client is happy with it, but I just want to tweak it some how to get rid of that slight bluish pall over on the right side of the photo. I was hoping that color mixer or channel mixer or something else i'm not familiar with would fix it and what I'd really like is to just make that blue turn into a slight gray so it looks "correct."

I find it a little hard to use the mouse scroll button for panning and rotating. Often I tend to zoom the scene or in the act of balance the scroll button when pressing it, I don't get the right tool and have to press it again, and that makes it not as intuitive as I would like to. I wounder if it's possible to alter the way I pan and rotate? Can I place the pan and rotate function at the right mouse button? Or is there mouses on the market that have a middle mouse button AND a scroll wheel so I can separate the pan/rotate from the zoom?

I'm using max 2011
I have a model which was originally a SAT file, it was just an extruded profile in the CAD package. When originally imported the part was fine, was selectable etc, but now for some reason this part is non-selectable, won't disappear when you do "hide all" etc but still renders and will still accept material types applied to it ?

I'm trying to model a box like shape with ripples over it's surface. The box can have rounded corners and edges. The ripples need to flow over the 6 faces of the box. I want 2 or 3 sets of ripples, originating in different places, interacting with each other.
My modelling skills in Max are not great. I generally use Inventor for modelling and Max for lighting, materials, animation and rendering. I've followed loads of tutorials on ways of doing this, but haven't quite managed it yet.
My latest attempt has been to use the patchdeform tool. What I've done is
1) modelling a plane, with many segments
2) applied the ripple modifier to the plane
3) created a box with smoothed edges/corners
4) converted the box to a patch
5) tried to patchdeform the plane to the box - get 'illegal patch' error
The above work with a sphere rather than a box. I'm not convinced this is the best way to achieve what I want.
