3ds Max :: Mental Ray Indoor Daylight Haze
Mar 7, 2012
I'm currently doing an architectural visualization piece and wondered if there was a 'standard' Haze setting on a MR Daylight Solution for a realistic indoor scene?
The renders are looking quite nice, but was told altering the haze could give it a more realistic appearance.

Uhm, whenever I render I only get white outputs. I'm used to use Revit, and have forgot how to use autocad. But this project relies on making a couple of renders in Autocad.
How do I get useful outdoor as well as indoor renders?
Here's the .dwg

When I returned from vacation recently I noticed that in almost all of my Mediterrean photos there is a haze. Objects up close are fine, but as the distances increase so does the have.See example below. I've tried Curves, Levels, Auto Tone, Auto Contrast, and Auto Color with little luck.

I thought USM to basically sharpen for the effect of removing atmospheric haze. I liked the technique so I built an action and used it. A while back I lost a hard drive and of course, my actions with it. So now I can't find where I got the info to start.
My memory says that it is USM at 20,50,0 but I'd like to find something like the article I based my action on.
Klattu said in a thread here on haze removal, 250,250,0. Why those numbers. I need to read what got me to this in the first place.

I know it can be done in photoshop but I don't know the right combination.

Besides the background layer with a 'B/W image' I created a layer to add some colour. When I use the eraser in that layer, a white haze appears. I've never experienced such a thing in over 15 years of Photoshop use.
Normal, coverage 100%. In the image below clearly to be seen the eraser stroke from left to right. The white haze best to be seen at the darker part.

The image above is from a game called "Dragon Age 2" and I was trying to somehow create the smoldering haze around the eyes but at the same time use the effect of smoke rather than a reddish glow. I know to use transparency and such but how to make the 'wisps' of smoke is beyond me.

I have CDGSX4. I've been trying to edit some of my Canon Raw (CR2) files. However I get this purplish haze covering my images I think it has to do with the Raw File driver. I've noticed this with PSPX4 and also the trial version of CDGSX6.
The image is from a Canon T4i (650).

When I try and add a custom background map to the MR Physical Sky, the map takes up the whole environment removing the ground and horizon making my model look like is floating in the sky. Before I used to do this and the custom map would just replace the sky texture with my own cloud image. I've attached an image of what I'm trying to get which is basically my own clouds image as the sky but still retain the ground plain the MR Daylight System gives you.

I'm coming up with a strange problem with some of my renders (see attached, the white lines around edge). This is using a daylight system, I used a HDR map for the environment and though maybe that caused the problem, but it did with two other maps in the environment channel as well.

Gamma 2.2, Gamma 1.8. Linear workflow, exposure, input - output etc. how NOT to get washed out images using sun&sky. For example, you use daylight system to render a car with carpaint, the carpaint mat is washed out. No matter what settings are used. Some renders look as if each A&D material stayed nicely saturated and crisp while most don't. I know that the daylight system is supposed to mimic real lighting conditions, but there has to be a way to preserve a nice rich crisp A&D color on renders.

I am not an expert user of this program and just jumped from 2008 to 2012. I model in Autocad Architecure and link my file, and apply textures in Max, where I create my renderings. I was plugging along today, and all of the sudden noticed that I cannot select my cameras, or daylight system- they are grayed out in the top view, and cannot be selected any other view. I can insert a new camera, but it is immediately grayed out and not selectable. I can however use the select camera through viewport, and can change parameters in the modify window, but cannot select them to move. My select filter is set to "all"...

I am using a daylight system in 3ds max, but unfortunately there is a black horizon line that I can't get to go away. I tried taking the physical scale in the Environment tab up to 100,000 but that just made the black horizon white. It blended a little better but it still obvious. Is there a way to make that go away or disappear?

I've currently got a daylight system in place with an "mr physical sky" shader, but I've also got a 360° sky panorama with clouds.
Is there anyway of getting them both working together? I've set the sun so it appears in the right place in my scene, but the sky is too empty. Putting the Sky panorama blocks the sun. I've tried putting the map on a Geosphere with a circular UVW map modifier and have tried adjusting the opacity but I can't work it out.

I'm using the metallic preset under the arch and design for mental ray and i've added a scratch bump map. It shows perfectly on the material editor but doesn't show up at all on the actual rendered image.
I've attached the image to show you.

I have made several renders in the Scanline renderer, I've tried to capture as much detail as I can squeak out of it, setting it to the Catmull-Rom filter, Light Tracer, Max Star 2.5, and the like. It creates nice renders for game assets. However, if I switch it to Mental Ray, it seems that a lot of the details get washed out. Are there any 'base setting' to capture every nook and cranny better?

Mental Ray keeps crashing out of memory during rendering. I guessing it's my jpeg images, becuase that's the only thing I am doing wrong. I didn't know what the set standard size it should be. I am using 2048x2048. I am not sure what the set standard is.
Updated my POST due to no replies.
Jennifer O'ConnorMastering mental ray ®Rendering Techniques for 3D ... is generally required for all 8-bit images saved as JPEG and PNG, and not ...... I found that most people where confused about PNG being 16- bit. Now I see I am doing good to keep the resolution and pixel size down to 8 bit.

How is it possible for Mental Ray to give me an out of memory error on a Windows 7 professional 64-bit machine using the 64-bit Max Design? I have 4GB of physical memory, but whenever a program needs more memory Windows allocates virtual memory to it, so theoretically my memory limit should be my hard drive space. However, when I try to render my scene with a little less than 200k polys with a displacement map on it (trying to get grass), the task manager shows 3dsmax.exe using up to 4.3GB of commit memory (4gb working memory), then it crashes.
I've set Windows to use up to 16gb for my pagefile, so it seems like mental ray isn't actually 64-bit since it crashes right at the 4gb limit of a 32-bit program.

we're currently doing an animation of a walkthrough of an airport where we're getting these strange artifacts when rendering after creating the final gather pass.
We're using only mr daylight system to light the scene, to get an all white soft-shadow render. Only three types material, diffuse white, glossy white and glass (all mr A&D). The glossy material gets blown out and we receive strange red and green artifacts here and there in the model.
We use mr Photographic Exposure Control.

I am searching for the "mental ray message window" in the 2012 version. ok i've got the German version, but there is only a "rendermeldungsfenster"(render message window) where only the errors are shown. is there any other possibility to see how many final gather points are in the scene?

I saw something about being able to render faster using network rendering for mental ray, but I'm not sure where I've seen it, nor do I know how it works.
If this is possible it would be great, since a scene I tried rendering had an ETA of about 51 hours. So I turned off ray traced shadows, seems to have lowered the rendering time quite a bit, but I'm still gonna end up with about 26 hours of rendering. If network rendering could bring that time down, that would be great.

I just tested some of my scenes from Max 2011 in 2012, and rendering is in average about 30% slower than in 2011.
I am attaching pictures for reference. It is obvious that they are 100% identical, there is no difference quality wise, but a significant difference performance wise. I will add some more result comparisons on more complex scenes to confirm the problem once they finish rendering. I am willing to provide my scenes to Autodesk if interested to solve this issue ASAP.

I'm trying to render a sequence consisting of some letters with a self-illumintating glossy plastic material.
The object consists of two objects, one with high gloss plastic with a slight transparency, another one within it, slightly inset, with a high value self-illuminating material.
I look-developed it using still mode rendering, but when I started to render as a sequence I noticed it looked different than expected. The difference is in the indirect diffuse pass, which is very noisy in the animated sequence. It also has some very pronounced highlights which are incorrect.
