3ds Max Animation :: IK Chain Limbs Don't Bend
Jun 24, 2013
I have a simple character with two a leg. The IK chain goes from the top bone to the bottom nub. When I move the ik helper around, the knee does not bend, even though there is a joint for it. Instead the leg rotates only at the top.
Example:
Should happen: (notice bend in knee)

The bones are all connected correctly as well.

For some scenes we have a chain which is wrapped around several cogs, just like a bicycle. In this scenario we need the chain links to follow the path and retain their relationship to each other.
In other scenes we have a chain which follows along a changing path. Imagine this if you can: A heavy weight has a chain attached which goes vertically up, over a pulley and down the other side where it is attached to a lorry. The lorry drives off pulling the weight upwards. This is my challenge!
Should I individually constrain the links using a Pin constraint and use dynamics completely to keep the chain taught?

I am attempting to make a roller chain animation. what would be the best method? I have found a fairly good method of creating the chain using array in Inventor then importing it into max as the assembly arrangement needed . Can I just have all of the links follow a path?

I am working with a rig that has arms and legs in which the upper and lower sections (Thigh, Shin, Upper Arm, Forearm) are composed of chains of bones in and of themselves. I have included a screen shot to show a simplified example of what I mean.
When working FK, of course, this is no problem at all, but sometimes I'd like to be able to use IK solvers to make placement tasks easier. Unfortunately, applying an IK solver means the bones forming the upper and lower parts of the limb also bend as the limb bends. In the screenshot, the bones on the left are an example of what sort of limb I am dealing with, the bones in the middle show the effect of using an IK solver (note the bend in the upper and lower leg) and the bones on the right show what I would like to achieve using IK.
So, is there any way to lock the motion of those bones composing the upper and lower parts of the limb so they won't bend as part of an IK chain? I'm using Max 2010 by the way.

How to go about bending blades of a fan. This is a test demo of a project I have to do. I want to solve my issue with this simple demo. I have to make a crashing fan scenario. As the fan crashes the fan blades must bend natural in the animation. This animation will be about 20+ sec long. How would you go about solving this problem

I have a problem with making joints in Maya 2013. When I use joint tools and try to make a chain, it won't connect and goes in random direction. I've attached the screenshot. I've just started using Maya.

So I'm trying to rig this arm to bend, but with more "bow" than "bend", if you get what i mean..
I thought I could create an IK handle, but at the moment it bends only at 1 joint. I would like it to bend further up the arm,in an arc shape.

I'm working on a project that involves lengthening limbs of figures. I'd like the limbs to be longer but not wider or terribly out of proportion. I was toying around with free transform and distort, perspective, etc with minimal results but would like to know how to get the desired effect. I have been selecting an arm, for example, from shoulder to fingertips and trying to lengthen that way, but it either enlarges the whole limb or distorts it too much to look real.

Layers used have individual chain link options. (CS1)
The way it is handled now, is awkward and time consuming.
If you want to link layers that are not next to each other, you shift-select all the unwanted ones in between as well. Than you need to de-link those in a second go. (By moving down to buttom for each single layer you need to deselect)
Is this supposed to be a smart improvement?
Is there an on/off option to have individual chain link with every layer, that I have missed?

I am trying to anymate a chain using rigid bodies. However, when I try previewing the thing, my chain links just snap and the whole chain blows apart.
Anyway, it appears to have something to do with interpenetration of the links. I'm sure it is easy to fix just by changing some numbers somewhere, Now all I need to know is which numbers and where they are located...

I am trying to create a roller chain as part of a cad drawing of a bicyle.
I created a link of the chain (pic attached) and I am following this video to repeat it as a rectangular pattern : [URL]....
However the links are not following the path they're supposed to - I can't attach that file right now.
Anything that I should do different from the video? I have been using inventor for a little while but I've never used the adaptive stetches or the functions thing ot a rectangular pattern that is not in the shape of a rectangle.

I am now working for an oil company, nd we do arather a lot of work involving lifting plans with chain hoists etc.
My question is, is there any way of make a linetype that automatically draws chain. At the moment, i have to manually draw a link, and copy and paste with basepoint to the reuired length, and then "block" it. however, when we come to alter these drawings, they are a nightmare to alter all the chain sections.
If there was a way of developing a linetype that automatically made these chains, it would speed things up so much.

I'm designing a lift truck with a "chain over" lift - the lift cylinder has a sprocket mounted on the end of the rod, and the chain is grounded on one side. The other end of the chain is mounted to a lifting carriage so that as the cylinder extends and pushes the sprocket up, the chain rolls over it and the carriage moves up (at twice the speed of the cylinder). This is nothing new - it's pretty much how every single fork truck in the world operates.
My question is this: can I use the roller chain generator to model this chain, or should I model the links and array them along a path? My thinking is that if I can use the chain generator, I should be able to animate the chain using Dynamic Simulation. But the chain generator seems to require a minimum of 2 sprockets in order to work - there's no way that I can see to have a "non-looped" chain or any way to just ground the end of the chain.
