3ds Max Animation :: Bending Objects To Look At Dummy

Is there a way of creating a load of cones on a plane, and then have them all bend, as if they are attracted to a dummy above them. So you could move the dummy around and the cones would all bend dynamically. Doesn't have to cones though, maybe blades of grass.

I run into this from time to time: I have animated some components using dummy objects but then realize that at some point I need to animate them all moving together, so I link the dummy objects to a new parent dummy that I just created. However, most of the time the child dummy objects go haywire, orienting themselves in new directions as soon as I link them to the parent dummy.

I have several parts that at a point in time come together and need to rotate together around a common point. However, when I animate them it will only let me rotate them around each individual part's axis. How can I temporarily link these parts to a parent dummy object so that I can rotate them together? I want this to happen midstream in the animation and after the rotation I will be decoupling the parts and having them do different things..

I have some architectural scenes that i'm bringing into max from Softimage. I'm using FBX. When I export, the instances come across as dummy objects, so it appears that instances are not support with FBX.

When i'm in Max, is there any way for me to tell Max that these dummies should be instances of another object?

I can not set up legs of character so to avoid unrealistic movements of legs in different directions. Problematic place in bending of legs in different directions occurs in the hips. How can I distribute multiple objects without distorting them on a circle path?
  
I have a few objects that I want to distribute to a circle line. I've tried scatter brush (looked horrible) , pattern brush (what you see here).No matter what I do, those objects are distorted.
 
Clients may want objects to be as many as 30 or 40, so I hope to avoid switching the objects manually.

I'm using Max 2012, and I wonder if there's a simple way to create an object that, when selected, would select a different specified object in the scene.

I'll explain the situation. I'd like to make a series of spline drawings in the shape of my rig, basically creating a simplified drawing of a skeleton, and then be able to click on, for example, the upper leg of this simplified drawing, and have the actual upper leg bone within the rig itself become selected.

Ideally, I'd like for the spline drawing I clicked to be unselected after I click it, leaving only the bone it represents selected. In essence, I want to make a group of "buttons" that can be used to select bones and helpers within a rig.

When I try the attach command, it removes all previous animation on each individual object.

3ds Max Animation :: Nodes Of A Curve To Other Objects

I am trying to hook some nodes of a curve to other objects.  Looks like Spline IK Control modifier is a best thing for that  and works great.
 
My only problem is that when I need to make a copy ( not instanced) of the whole curve and hooked objects  the curve unhooks of those objects and switches to it's original shape.   
 
For example I need to make a group of telegraph posts connected by wires and then copy that whole group to another place,. All the wires turns into a mess.
 
Is there anything I am missing?   I am accustomed to use similar  "hook" approach in Blender and curves stay intact there. Should I use some other way in 3dsmax?

3ds Max Animation :: Rigging Xref Objects

I am rigging a car that will definitely change at a later stage. To avoid having to redo a lot of work, I am using the Xref Objects option to bring the car into a new scene. In the new scene I have built my rig with all my controllers etc. I used simple linking to attach the various pieces of geometry to the rig. At this point everything works great - wheels turn and steer, body rolls, suspension works. I hit save.
 
Now when I close Max and then open the file again, the geometry has jumped all over the place (see the image attached)! I have tried various things to fix this with no luck...

I have reset xforms on all the original geometry, aligned the pivots so that they match exactly to the controllers they will be linked to, checked scale to make sure everything was at 100%, I have reset transforms. None of these solved the problem. Is this even the correct method to rig?

How do I import 3D models into a 3D layer in After Effects?  Previously this was done by exporting the model to Photoshop Extended where you could save the file as a 3D layer PSD file and import this 3D information into AE.  But with CS6 this functionality seems to have been removed from what I read in the documents.  So how is it done now?

3ds Max Animation :: How To Skin Multiple Objects For Character

Is it at all a good idea to go about to skin multiple objects for your character?...or is it better to make it a single mesh?

if its practicable whats are the "things to do" to go about it in the right direction. ..instanced skin modifier? OR unique skin for each objects?

does it make any difference if i attach the objects? or keeping them separate as far as instanced skin modifier is concerned? (not making single mesh by welding vertices)

specifically speaking about the character i am working on ...it has:

a. head mesh
b. a scarf mesh
c. hand mesh (till their elbows)
d. body/ trenchcoat mesh
e. trousers
f. shoes mesh
g. shoelaces and eyehole rings mesh

NOTE:
i at least need the trenchcoat to be a seperate mesh as i want to apply APEX on it later. (the APEX tut on youtube indicates the trenchcoat is a seperate mesh.)

PROBLEM:
i tried to use a instanced skin modifier, however the scarf head and trenchcoat and the head where they should be together gets messed up when i check with some basic check poses.

how to link a biped's head to an object? I can link it to other objects as the parent, but I need the head to be the Child.

I'm trying to animate a Terminator robot model I found here (it was a free download):

The model is rigged to a biped, and I'm trying to animate its head to follow the exact movements of a person's head in some footage I shot. I used PFTrack to motion-track the person's head (using geometry tracking) and exported the track as a MaxScript. So I run the script in Max and it produces a camera and head model which exactly follows the movements of the original person.

how can I link the Terminator's head (or rather, the biped controlling the Terminator's head) to the animated model? Better yet, how do you link a biped's head to Any object? I can link any object TO the head, but I cannot make the biped's head the Child. How to do this? I also tried using Select IK Object in the Motion panel, which works for other parts of the biped, but not the head.

I have 3ds Max 2012 and I am trying to do a simulation with mass fx. I am trying to do a simulation where a minecraft character (dynamic object) is walking and then gets hit with a small box (kinematic object) causing him to blow backward into his seperate pieces. My problem i encounter during this is I cant run the simulation unless the parts of the Character are a dynamic body but when i bake the dynamic body it just erases all the keyframes i already had on the minecraft character.

I need to animate the hide and unhide of a set of objects, I know I can use the visibility track to do this, but I have two issues with this, one, this will not hide it from the view while animating or looking at it in wireframe, which makes it difficult since I'm doing some previz and I need the object gone from the wireframe view... Two, there is an object (I bought them) that refuses to take the visibility track coming from the master object, and it does not have its own one, so I don't have a clue why it ignores it.

Also know that I can suddenly move the object out of the camera view, but was trying to see if there was something a bit more elegant than this, a script to animate the hide and unhide of a groped object would be the ideal thing, but searching the web for it didn't return anything useful.

I have a chain moving along a spline, and I want to know how to make the chain disappear when it reaches a certain point, then reappear when it moves out of that point. I don't want the whole chain disappearing, i just want the part of the chain that has moved off of the spline.

I suppose you could say i'm trying to hide it.

I'm trying to make the clawshot from twilight princess. The chain shoots out a hundred feet, but then disappears when it goes into the device.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Create Dummy Surface And Apply To All Baselines

I am doing some car park designs with Corridors at the moment.

The method I am using is to create a dummy surface and apply surface profiles to all Baselines and Targets (mostly Offset Alignments). This way if I have to change my levels, I simply amend my dummy surface and everything updates straight away.

This works great, but I recently got a (typically random) Fatal Error. I recovered the Recover drawing which was saved and for some reason all profiles changed to Static and I can't change them back to Dynamic.

I know that if an alignment cant find the surface it will change to Static and I assume that during the fatal error or recover process, something must have triggered for this to happen?

Is there any way (other than resampling all profiles and updating each corridor target individually) of making the profiles dynamic again?
