Xara :: Combine 2 Lines Together?
Aug 1, 2013
I've not used Xara in ages and can't remember how (or even if it's possible) to join two lines together. I was using the freehand tool with trace mode enabled to roughlty trace around an object in a jpeg image so I zoomed in on the object in the image I wanted to trace to get better precision. This meant the image was larger than my monitor and I had to trace a bit, press space bar, pan a bit, press space bar to get back to freehand tool, move over end of line to get little '+' sign to continue drawing existing line etc. But on one of the times I must have not got the '+' so was actually drawing a new line and not a continuation of the existing - hence need to get these 2 to join together.

The skew tool only seems to allow a left or right skew, i.e. you can turn a square into a parallelogram.
Is there a way to combine left and right skew, i.e. to turn a square into a trapezium?

It also includes some editted type that intersects with more editted type. I really to need to combine them to a single line without the intersection of the half "x" and the top serif of the "g". I included a project file.
PS: I had attempted to use the Pathfinder Unite command, with no success. URL....

I have a shape created by three hexagons and they are abutted along edges. I would like to combine them into a single object and in doing so reduce the lines so that the abutted lines become one line. the reason is that currently they are processed twice along each abutted line by my laser.
I can use combine but this still leaves them as discrete editable shapes in node editor, so clearly the double lines are still there.
If I use weld I lose the lines.

The very first thing any CAD program can do is be able to create a series of lines, connected end to end, on the fly, by starting each line snapped to the end of the last line.
I cannot see how to do this very basic procedure. Perhaps I'm missing something (). I can see how you can make 2 lines separately, then move one to snap to the other, but this seems awfully crude for a program like Xara.

Is there an easy way that I am missing to create lines around a group? For example, when I want a rectangle with rounded corners on only one side, I usually just make 2 separate rectangles, one with rounded corners, one square, then group them together. However, when you put a line around it it also makes a lines where the two meet each other. I have always worked around it by adding another square rectangle between the 2 with no lines, to cover up the lines. Am I missing something obvious?

When I apply simple flat transparency to a line, or a shape with an outline, it becomes translucent - as expected.
But when I apply a linear (or circular / elliptical / conical etc) transparency, only the fill is affected, and the line remains opaque

I have looked everywhere at all sorts of photoshop and illustrator tutorials (because I couldn't find a Xara one) to accomplish this effect. I am creating a website for my client Jim and would like to incorporate a similar image to what he's using on his book cover, but with some different colors as the background to his site.
You can see what I'm trying to do in his blog header background here: [URL]......
I've found that this is a stock photo used in a lot of places, but I'm not really interested in getting the original image - I have that, but as a Jpeg on a black background. I'd prefer to learn how to create a similar effect in Xara.
I have tried all sorts of things that are kind of close, but just not there yet. I've tried using a line with pen pressure with a glow shadow. I've tried lines with a stained glass color overlay. I've tried creating a number of different brushes with a few levels of color, some with Gaussian blur applied, etc. but I just can't get this effect down. It always looks pretty good when I'm done, but then I look at the inspirational original and I'm not even in the ballpark for the amount of shine, glow, impact, etc.
In the end, this may not even work for the site since will be putting it on a light colored background, but I still want to know how to create this, as I'm sure I'll be able to use the technique elsewhere.

What is the best way to radius a corner?
i.e. I have two lines: one is horizontal, and in this case the other is at 45 degrees, and at the point where the join I want to create an exact radius. So that one line curves into the other, following an exact arc.
What is the easiest/best way to create this?

Is it possible with Xara to create vertical lines in a shape? Think of the white house dome, but from a top down view. I am trying to create some domes in my maps that have an effect much like that. I know with the contour tool I can create a dome with horizontal lines, but is there a way to do it with vertical lines?

I'd like to have a custom set of stretchable buttons as my starter set for new projects.
As shown by the attached (zoomed) screen capture, when I add a highlight line and stretch the button, the line no longer follows the rounded corner shape. I've exaggerated th highlight line for this example. The line on the Xara template button uses a solid gray line all round, which isn't useful to me. Ideally, the line would be two colors with proper transitions at the corners.

I was wondering if there's any easy way to make lines to appear less precise as if they were hand drawn with a pencil?
eg.
I have seen brush strokes, but they only really provide a texture rather than a variation in the line as far as I have seen.

I wanted to join 2 lines together (i.e. end up with a single line). I know that you can join lines by selecting both then using any of the shape / line / brush tools to drag one node from line A over to the a node on line B (you get a little + symbol next to the mouse cursor once the lines can join).
This is fine is you want the final line shape to differ from the original 2, but what if you want to join 2 lines and retain the original paths?
I can do it by postioning the target nodes on eash of the lines almost but not quite touching then using the above technique but its a bit awkward and I suspect this isn't the best way to go about it.

Been using Xara Xtreme Pro 5 for several years and this is an issue that happens now. Parts of lines disappear in a drawing at different zoom levels. The drawing might look perfect at one zoom level, but if I zoom in from say 100% to 500% parts of lines disappear from the drawing. The fix is usually having to click on the line or zoom to a different %. I have attached a picture to show the issue. The hat on the left shows the missing part of the line (circled in red), and the hat on the right shows how the line actually is.
If this was happening in a pc game I would describe it as clipping. I'm on a Pentium 4 PC 3 GHz, Win XP SP 3 2 gigs of RAM. GeForce 6200 if this comes into play .

I've got a problem with the combine shapes > slice (cut) shapes. (Designer Pro X).
I often use this tool to cut a graphic to make a repeating object, so I don't want it to have any boarder, just solid color. But for some reason when I cut the shape xara puts a little (approx 1 pixel) transparent line where the shape has been cut. This is often added to exported to the edges of pngs and svgs and looks a bit like anti-aliasing of some sort but I don't want this, just a solid object.
How to avoid this? See my attachment for an example png that I created by simply slicing one rectangle from another, I want to be able to do this without the extra line appearing - ie just solid black.

When I drag out a circle, or use the node to curve the corners of a rectangle, the line isn't smooth. It looks like it's slightly jagged.
I'm trying to create a drawing which features the rounded edge of a playing card, with no luck. It simply doesn't look good.

However, I have never been satisified, due to the amount of pixellation on the margins of lines, and with Xara, I am looking for an improvement.
Basically, I am using graphics programmes to animate lines onto a 'live' video background. I do that by preparing a blank green mask, and tracing, by means of a slightly lighter line, (which is still rendered invisible by the following 'chroma' process in video-editing), as a guide. The actual tracing out of route followed, and so-on is onto the green 'blank', in preparation for the usual 'green-screen' process, to follow in my video editing stage. The principle is well proven and produces authentic animation over a background which proceeds as normal video. (It is also possible over a still photograph). The raster used subsequently, is the AVCHD standard of 1920 x 1080, the animation is of clusters of from three to five frames per 'exposure' and the whole thing is rendered in mpg2 into a continuous video-clip, from which time it becomes 'video'.
However, each frame is required to be 'saved'. When I first tried 'Xara' I was chuffed that the most recent extensions to my ever-lengthening lines were so 'sharp', and that encouraged me to use a line of only 4 pixels width, but when the resulting animation frames were recalled for storage in preparation for the animation-proper, the lines had developed the usual pixellated 'steps-and-stairs' and pixels on both margins of the lines were in a no-man's land, being half-and-half green and a muddy half-white, (white being the line I have standarised on, for technical reasons of minimal 'bleeding' etc).
What I wish to preserve, is the crisp whiteness of the lines, and the finely pixellated line-margins I began with. I can, for example, broaden the line, but if I broaden it beyond 8px, or so, I am right 'back' where I was with 'the other graphics-programme'. I can, of course, double the size of the raster to 3840 x 2160, (and do, on occasions for static one-off shots), but there are excellent resource-hogging reasons, why I do not wish to do so for sequences of up-to 200 frames, at-a-time.
Am, I missing something somewhere, using a 'wrong' procedure, or simply asking too much of the software?

I have been working on a document and reached a point where whenever I entered regular text, it showed as an outline of broken red lines (like a regular guidline). Changing fill and color etc has no effect. I can open a new document and enter text with normal results, but not in the existing document.

When you create shapes that fits together, there appeares a thin line that also shows when you make a jpeg from it. I'm a vector contributor at iStock and making a preview jpg with all those white lines looks really ugly (see attachment).
Here is a simple solution. Copy your shapes on top of each other and the lines are gone. This way your work stays 100% vector. For work that hasn't to be 100% vector, you could make a bitmap copy and place it under your vector image.

I am using Xara's Photo & Graphic Designer for the first time and slowly getting acclimated to the program after using Ulead's Photo Impact for 6 years.
Just one really basic question. I have three elements in my final design: two seperate lines of text surrounded by a black outline. To save this as a single graphic (.gif format), what do I need to do? With Ulead all I had to do was select all, right click and select merge as one, then simply save in whatever format I wanted to the destination of my choosing.
Is there a similar "merge as one" command in Xara or do I select each element in my graphic, then choose save from the file menu?

I'm pretty new and have a simple problem that for some reason I can't figure it out! And that is how to make a series of lines on the image that are all perfectly horizontal or perfectly verticle. This will be part of a chart and the lines will be dividers. So the chart will have basically 21 rectangles with 3 rectangles across and 7 rectangles down.
So, I KNOW how to use the straight line tool to make the vertical and horizontal lines but I don't know how to keep the lines perfectly vertical and horizontal and parallel with each other!

Executive summary of need: turn a color, line-and-fill Xara image into a very thin black line, no fills, no other colors.
I'm reproducing a 1930s - 1940s decal from a toy crib that we're restoring and repainting. The original decal on the headboard is deteriorated and flaking off, so I decided to reproduce it on clear inkjet waterslide decal paper. (White paper wouldn't work because of the open area between background ovals and the figure itself; here's the reproduced decal image - imagine everything not in color to be a clear area: )
However, since inkjet printing doesn't include opaque white, I need to manually paint white on the decal sheet behind the ovals and the figure to make the colors pop and to prevent the pink-painted crib background from showing through. I'd like to take the Xara image, copy it, then turn the copy into a very light black or gray line with no fills. This becomes guidelines for hand-painting
I'll print the black line version first on the decal sheet, paint white on it, then print the color version over top.How do I transform a copy of the original into my guidelines?

I'm sure there's a way to do this but for the life of me I can't remember and can't find it when I do a search. I have an object that is comprised of several lines that are grouped together, and I want to fill the entire group with a fractal cloud 3-color fill. In order to do so, I am creating the fill as a background, and making the object transparent, but when I do that, all my lines disappear (of course!) but I need the lines in it for details. Basically I want to layer this object

I have tried:

I'm working with cloth FX and my clothes keep falling apart because they're not all part of one element. My first question deals in combining them all into one element and for my second question I need to know if there is a better alternative to attaching these seperate elements using the cloth modifier. I'm aware of the weld function but I don't know if that would include me manually selecting every vert.
