VideoStudio :: DVD Resolution Worse Than Analog
Nov 1, 2010
I use VS Pro 2X and I still use an old Sony handycamDCR-TR310 8mm NTSC digital camcorder for all my stuff. I'm not buying anything new in the near future.
Here is my problem:
When I burn to DVD after capturing video the quality of the video on a 1080p television is bad. MY Blue-Ray player upsizes DVD resolution but it looks like a low resolution WMV file.
I understand that this is not an HD video being played on an HD TV so the quality will not be steller. The reason for posting this question is that I have played a DVD, from the same setup, I made a year ago with a DVD I just made and the older DVD is much better resolution. This only affects video not titles or images or anything else.
Here is what I have changed since last year:
- I use the proxy feature in VS for editing video
- I burn DVD to 16:9 now instead of 4:3 but I have changed back and no fix at all
Assuming the camera is still good and the quality of the DVD burner and media are the same could there be something in VS Pro X2 that is changing my resoultion or quality from capturing, editing to burning? Maybe I changed something and did not know it. Where should I look?

I'm trying to capture some VHS tapes to PC. I'm using my Sony camcorder DCR-TRV60E as analog-digital converter. This doesn't seem to work, although it's stated in the manual & all over internet that it should work. I'm not sure, but I think my A/V in is broken. I'm able to hear the audio from the connected analog device, but no video. Also the LCD screen on my camcorder is completly blue (as if it's getting no input). This is what I already tried:
1) VHS player > Camcorder A/V in + reviewed all camcorder settings (A/V -> DV out = on; ...)
2) portable DVD-player > camcorder (DVD has a 1-plug A/V out > 1 plug A/V in camcorder)
I'm thinking that my A/V input on the camcorder is broke. Any way to get confirmation? Or am I (still) missing a setting in the camcorder?

Any good analog capture device that works well in X4 or X5 I get all the usual problems, Fail to build capture graph, No Audio device shown in the list and so on. I have had every version of Video Studio since version 10 and it’s the only one that will work with these capture devices I am using 3 devices, K World USB 2800, Roxio video capture device USB, and Pinnacle 710 USB They all work great in Video Studio 10 and won’t work in any version higher than that I was hoping X5 might be the ticket but no luck. So I have a version of 10 just for analog capture All X Versions work fine with my HD cameras via firewire or mini DV from other camcorders But will not work at all with USB capture devices ?

In capture mode, choosing "capture video"I get error message "failed to initialize the video capture plug-in another program may be using it or this file has been moved" " open driver failed" 152.00.43.0 15023.4.2 my video capture device is a USB WDM 2860 and shows in the "source" window but no "format" can be chosen and no video comes through. The operating system is windows 7 64 bit. I have "Magix movie edit pro 17" and "Cyberlink Video Director" and both of these programs work with the same device and capture. Neither one of these applications are running while using Video Studio. I checked and nothing else is utilizing this USB WDM 2860 device. I reinstalled the software, installed the patches, and uninstalled the USB drivers and reinstalled them.

I used an online txt to jpg converter and it generated a jpg of the txt file as if it was screencapped because it was too large to manually screencap it... but there is tons of speckles around the lettering and when I use despeckle it makes the speckles SO MUCH WORSE, you cannot ever read the text!!! I don't know why despeckle is doing the EXACT OPPOSITE!!!

I installed an ICM profile from Red River paper in attempt to improve printing from LR by allowing LR to manage colors. Probably should not have done this because I am using Canon s9000 printer and Canon paper but I could not find Canon profiles anywhere on internet (for this printer). In any case, end result is horrific but I can't "reset" or uninstall.
Do I need to reinstall LR and photoshop to fix this? More likely this is now somewhere in Windows but I have already tried to delete everywhere I could find.

I made a PNG logo transparent, and when I go to save the new transparent logo in PNG format, the quality has dropped significantly from the original. I have done nothing other than delete the background of the logo, why is this happening in a lossless format? What can I do to fix this or increase the quality of the transparent logo?

I have a very large piece of artwork in my possession. The artwork was originally drawn in high-resolution on a computer, but a true digital copy of the original is not available to the public.
My copy of the artwork is large enough such that the original pixels can just barely be distinguished by the naked eye. I would like to scan it in at extremely high resolution, or take photos of it (multiple photos of various sections may be necessary for enough resolution). Afterwards, I am wondering if Photoshop, some available filter, or other image-processing program would be able to analyze this ultra-resolution scan and reconstruct a perfect copy of the original digital image?
The idea is that if I can see the original pixels with my eye, Photoshop should be able to likewise deduce all the original pixels of the original digital image, and reconstruct it as such via some algorithm, in the original resolution.

I've just burned a DVD slideshow using some 7mp Photos. The mpg file looks fine at 720X480 but when I burn this to disk the resolution appears really low, maybe around half the original. The video file is only 350M so it's not a compression issue.

I'm having problems trying to set the video resolution on both of my copies of VS Pro X4. The captures I'm using are 16x9, and when I select a thumbnail and play it, the clip first displays as 4x3 in the preview window, then when it starts playing, it goes to 16x9, but when I put the clip in the video track, it displays and plays in 4x3... even after I change the Project Properties to 16x9, it still does the same thing.
I have recently taken some of the same files and created a 16x9 optimized MPEG in the share menu, but for some reason, I'm unable to do it again. I have had problems with my capture device, and haven't used VS Pro X4 for a while, but now I have a new methodology, and am back to working with video, again. Some of the things I did before, are now forgotten... I'm sure the answer is somewhere on this site, but so far, all of my searches and reading have only offered the things I have already done, and so far as I can tell, that doesn't work. At this point, I can't remember if the editing I did before, was displayed in 4x3 or 16x9, but the DVDs I have burned are definitely in 16x9, but the last one was definitely 4x3.

This may seem a strange question, but I do not work with images very often and having just returned from holiday in NZ (how privileged you are to live there Ken) I have some 30GB of video and almost 1000 images to edit.
These images are 16:9 4000x2248, 180 dpi and 24 bit depth, so is there an optimum resolution that these should be reduced to, for creating projects in conjunction with the video (1280x720 HD 59fps) I read some time ago that images need to be reduced in size, but I can't remember why.

I have a screen capture video which is 1024x768. I want to edit it and export as .mp4 in its same resolution--1024x768. You would think this would be easy, but it's grayed out. I tried Settings, create a custom export format and it was grayed out there too. How do I export my 1024x768 video as 1024x768 .mp4?

I have a video that in its native format is 1920 x 1080. I need to add our logo to the corner and I have easily done this. Now I need to render it out into several different formats. Rendering it as an MP4 isn't a problem. However, I can't seem to get anything to work in the WMV category. Each time I try to change the size attribute of ANY of the 'profiles' I receive an Access Denied error from Windows Media inside VisualStudio. After I click OK, it tells me to restart the codec and try again. I can pick any of the profiles and receive the same error.
After that issue is corrected, I have another one that is similar. At the 1920 x 1080 resolution, the black bars occupy quite a bit of the viewing window. I can easily 'crop' them off but then I am faced with the same issue as above. How to I set ANY of the formats (MP4, WMV, etc) to 1772 x 472 as the finished size. None of the file types allow you to change the size. Am I missing a simple step here? I have a feeling I am.

I am using VS X2. I am trying to create a DVD of my project. I have assembled my files/projects, created a menu, and previewed. This is as far as I can get. The prompts at the bottom of the page are not displayed properly. I have a "back" prompt in the lower left and it looks like there is the start of a prompt in the lower right. I have adjusted my screen resolution to no avail.

I know those are almost opposites, but is there a way to allow VSPro to somehow pre process the video such that my preview runs more smoothly and with high resolution (or at least more smoothly).
I have a decent box and am trying to process 1080p clips. It seems to run smoothly after I create a file (in the preview window), but is there a way to have it do that without going to step 3 ("Share")?

I am not yet an owner for VideoStudio. This program is on my short list of software I wish to use for screen capture (creating a series of tutorials for an online classroom) and I have to be able to produce these items in a minimum of 720P 16x9 format (Ideally would like to grab at 1080P but 720 is my absolute minimum requirement). Can VideoStudio do this for me? Do I need a specific capture/video card to be able to acquire at a 720P resolution?
I have a background in broadcast television in my day job, (I edit on Quantel and Apple FCP) and what I like about this software is that it's an "all in one" solution.
PS. running Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit, 8GB RAM, NVidia GeForce9600GT card

Just finished up a little slide show type project for the mother-in-law's 75th birthday. When I rendered the project to an AVCHD or MPEG-4 HD file, playback quality is excellent. So I needed to make a DVD version of the project as the old girl doesn't do 'puters. But when I burned the project to DVD the resolution of the pictures/titles was reduced substantially.
I used the following settings for the project and burning:
Project Props:
NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Upper Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 16:9
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo
DVD Props:
DVD Video 16:9
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Upper Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 16:9
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo
The resulting burn would only load on one of three (different brand) DVD players. Picture quality poor. Visible jags on edges of titles. Flicker on background Lens Flare effect.
Then I tried changing the DVD settings to:
*DVD Slideshow 16:9
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
*Frame-based
(DVD-NTSC), 16:9
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo
This resulted in a quick load and play on all three DVD players. Flicker on Lens Flare effect gone.
Picture quality still poor. Jags still visible on titles.
This is my first crack at burning to DVD and I'm just wondering what I'm missing here. I would assume that the DVD quality should be equal to AVCHD or MPEG-4.

I have canon legria HFR 106 [URL]......
Problem is setting of the best resolution:
-FULL HD is making these horizontal lines (every other pixel line) if something moves in the picture so its not good
- lower camera setting makes the resolution to 1440x1080 which is 4:3 !! that's not the ratio of today (and youtube) and i didn't even realize it because video studio has 16:9 project settings and the ratio of outputted video seems right?
- Compared these: video 4:3, project 16:9, still images from another camera 4:3 -> fail
what do you recommend, is there a way to get full resolution better without those lines or other way to 16:9 ?
2. Also only recent and fast opening player to play those camera raw videos (.mts) is VLC-player. Is there a way to get it open those videos in zoom mode of 50% or 33% and not 100% they goes over my screen every time!

I have used X4 for about two years and X6 for the past couple of months. I cannot figure out how the create more rendering options under Share -> Create Video File. For example, if I want to use the MPEG codec but a custom resolution. Often custom is greyed out and not selectable. In free software such as ffmpeg or Virtual Dub I can create video as any resolution, aspect ratio, or codec. VS options seem to be very limited to these prepackaged choices. For example, some people have described moving a .DLL to the Coral folder to get custom codecs under the Create Video -> custom option. I'd rather not have to always render in VS and then recodec in another software.
My biggest challenge is the new Instagram format. It is basically 640x640 webm format. But I can import MPEG h264 without issue. My goal is to setup a 1:1 640x640 profile so I don't always have to game and stretch titles to display properly in the final version.

I just upgraded from VS Pro5 to VS Pro 6. Will not launch.
Get error msg "Screen resolution size is not sufficient to launch the application"
Screen resolution is currently set at 1366 x 768 which is "recommended" I have reset resolution and restarted with each attempt at changing resolution... still get message..
Not a happy camper... Seems they should be sophisticated enough to check that system is set properly.... and if not, to give information on how to correct.

I have for a long time struggled with obtaining hi resolution maps to include in my movies of trips I have done.
I have searched the internet for images of such maps for download and even used screen shots when using Google Earth.
I always wanted a higher resolution so that I could ZOOM in without the image becoming too fuzzy due to the fact that I was ending with an image of only (say) 512 x 288.
I am also a fan of FSX (M/S Flight Simulator) and recently taught myself how to create photo-realistic scenery which uses the TILES from Google Earth to create extra large (in pixels) images of parts of the world.
Today I realised that I could use the same to create images for maps to use in movies (I recently created an image around 5200 x 3000 pixels - the only limit to image size is how much memory you have and so using a 64bit processor and system works a lot.
It is named sBuilderX and it is available from [URL]....There is documentation within the zip file HOWEVER to create the image files for hires maps you will need to search for and download file make_photo-real_ground_textures_in_fs_x.zip which is available as a free download at [URL]...
You may need to join the web site (FREE) to enable the download.
Within sBuilderX you can choose to use Google Earth or or Microsoft Live Virtual Earth, terrain or streets. Also note that the image files are BGL files only however you can change those to JPG if required.
Hope this may have useful for few people who like to include hires maps (which they can use zoom without loosing sharpness) in their movies.

I have been copying a number of pre-recorded video clips onto a DVD-R disc and playing them on my DVD recorder. As my Panasonic DMR-XW380 DVD recorder only plays DivX or XviD video files I have to convert the files I have to this format.
We have a Sony Bravia 40" TV and I was wondering about the best settings I should use for the Frame Resolution and bitrate etc. When I render anything to DivX with VS I use a Frame Resolution of 720 x 576 and a bitrate of 56kbps and this seems to play okay in my setup. Do you think these settings could be improved?

I realize the nature of my question maybe asking the impossible, but I have a low res image I downloaded from the internet, placed in an InDesign page, blew it up and printed it out. I was going for the distressed look that it has, it looks ok when I print it out considering it's low res and I blew it up fairly large. However, it's a little too pixelated to look professional when printed. Are they any tricks or things I can do to make it look higher res for print. I've attached the image as well as a screenshot of the InDesign file so you can see it in context.
