Revit :: Center Of Dimensions Or Reference Planes

Jun 11, 2013

Trying to center some things in Revit LT 2014.  How do you find the center of dimension lines and refence planes and the like.  AutoCad KNOWS where the center is for these things.  How to tell in Revit?  For instance, I am trying to center an imported toilet in a space in a bathroom and something like this would take me about 5 seconds in ACad.

Revit :: Complex Pipe Structure And Reference Planes

Oct 22, 2013

Attached is an image of one of the many Complex pipe structures that I am working on for steel fabrication (family), what I am trying to achieve.

I am creating these pipes using sweeps with reference lines at their centres, then I trace over them in 3D using pick path command when creating the extrusion. Is this a good way of doing it?

In trying to draw this particular element I have hit a problem. Drawing the curves that join the straights has become difficult as the straights don't align easily, and so I was wondering if there is a way of creating a reference plane by picking 3 points in 3d? This would be really, really useful!

The curve at the top left of the 'plan' joining the straights is difficult to draw as the straight on the left comes back at an angle and not perpendicular to say the rear vertical pipe work, which is drawn using another plane. I have managed to draw this so far by aligning it by eye, a dodgy way which is not really acceptable.

Found a way I think. A major part of the problem is that you cannot draw a reference plane in 3d! So after I have oriented to a plane perpendicular to the direction I want to draw, I then can draw an extrusion and then rotate the view in 3d and pick the face of the extrusion that aligns with the plane I want to draw on. A bit finicky really. Is there a better way?

I have used the align to plane in 3d

Revit :: Why Basic Drafting Features Don't Seem To Work With Reference Planes

Sep 16, 2011

I am learning to use Revit 2012 and having a hard time figuring out why basic drafting features don't seem to work with reference planes. Aligning more than a few of these one-at-a-time is time consuming - any way to extend multiple reference plane lines to a boundary line or object? I read your instructions for offsetting reference planes - when I select the reference planes button in the home tab, the options bar allows me to set an offset distance but I am at a loss as to how one goes about getting the line to offset - I keep getting the layout dimension when i try to click on the line!

I can pick them one at a time, but sure would be nice to grab them at once.

Revit :: Trees Which Look Like Two Crossed Planes

Oct 22, 2011

I have a site plan with trees which look like two crossed planes when looked in 3D black and white. I wonder if there is a way to smooth these trees so they look smooth at least during the time that I prepare a PDF of the black and white 3D Site Plan.  If this setting can be reverted to the crossed trees after preparing the PDF, that is fine.  Also at this time I am working with black and white 3D, so color is not an issue, only the smoothness of the trees. Is there a setting that can make these trees look smooth?

Revit :: Plan Of Existing Flat Roof - Eliminate Planes

Jan 16, 2013

I am creating a plan of an existing flat roof.  The building is rectangular but has a large notch on one long side so the plan is kind of u-shaped.  The slope is to the center with a single valley.  When I put a split line down the middle it creates plans and valleys to the sides of the notch.  How can I eliminate these planes? The entire north half slopes to the center.  When I set the sides to "define slope" I get "slab edit failed" message.

Note, the south hatched section is a mansard style clay tile roof.  There are parapets at the corners that wrap into the roof.  How to I notch the sloped roof?

AutoCad 2D :: Dimensions That Reference Only The Layout?

Sep 13, 2012

I'm trying to create dimensions that only reference the layout tab.

Example- When I dimension from two end points within the same viewport, the dimension reads out 50' because that's the length of the line regardless of the scale the viewport displays. Now I add another viewport and try to dimension between viewports and the dimension references the layout. Regardless if it's the same viewport or not I need the dimension to reference the layout/paper space.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Content Center Reference

Feb 2, 2013

I'm very new to Autodesk Inventor 2013.I'm working on a small project on my laptop at school. Recently I tried to work on this project at home. So I put everything on a Memory Stick, plugged it in at home and opened the file as usual. The problem is that the file needs references to the content center parts like screws etc. and can't find them. I was looking through my whole computer for this content center files Inventor is asking me, but I can't find them.

If I open a new project and open the content center it works without problems. The problem is just that I can't tell Inventor where the parts are to which it needs to be referenced.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Reference Dimensions In IPart Table

Aug 14, 2011

The question I want to ask is about reference dimensions in iPart.

I can create a sketch and place reference dimensions on it, there's no problem. I can activate any configuration manually and see the reference dimensions adjusted according to configuration, no problem again.

I would like to know — is it possible to automatically populate column of the iPart table with reference dimension value, as it stands for each configuration?

I was able to find some solution for that, but it's not automatic. I can mark reference dimension of export, and add it as a column to the table, but I need to manually activate each configuration to populate the column with measured reference value. Not very good, because there can be very many configurations.

How to automatically get complete list of reference dimensions values for each configuration of the iPart?

Now, in IV 7, I have alot of trouble creating reference dimensions from adjacent features on the same surface. I have to change the way I'm working now and it has stumped me on a few occasions. is there a "new" feature I need to enable or is this the cost of progress?

AutoCAD Inventor :: IPart Exporting Reference Parameters / Driven Dimensions Update All?

Jun 24, 2013

I have some manufacturing dimensions that are an end result of my design so they are driven dimensions at the end of my modeling history and pulled into the ipart table.  If I make some design changes I need these dimensions to update too.  The problem is they do not automatically update and require a manual activation of each child memeber for the dimension to update.

The dreaded "The Values in the active row don't match the document's current values. do you wish to update the table before continuing"  Click, enter, Click, enter, Click, enter.

AutoCad :: Dimensions To Show Center Points

Mar 15, 2013

I'm currently using AutoCAD Electrical 2013, but I think that this may fall under a general AutoCAD question.

The company I'm working for does panel layout drawing that require upwards of several hundred holes to be punched into it. Right now, we use ordinate dimensions to show center points of all the holes for our hole punch machine. Recently, we decided to start putting the X,Y dimensions on an Excel spreadsheet for easier reading for our punch operator. What I'm looking for is a way to either A) extract the ordinate dimensions from AutoCAD and into an excel file or B) Extract the hole center locations from a specified base point to an Excel spreadsheet. Is there an easy way to do this or do I have to go one by one and type it out?

AutoCAD Inventor :: Measuring Between Tabbed Parts And Lost Dimensions With Replace Model Reference

Aug 27, 2012

Two different problems (questions). These are IV2012 files but the problems are the same in 2013.

Open the two attached ipt's. Launch the Measure Distance tool and measure between the blue an red face on the DimTest. It should read 1 inch.

Change to DimTest Derive using the tabs on the status line. Measure still gives 1 in. Change precision to All Decimals. The mouse pointer changes to calipers and the distance now measure 1.004 (which is correct)

Switch back to DimTest again using the tabs.

Measure again and notice the mouse pointer still shows the calipers which imply that it is going to return all decimals but the dimension given is still just 1 inch. Either the mouse pointer should change back or all decimals should stick.

OpenDimTest.dwg. Manage> Modify> Replace Model Reference and pick DimTestDerive.

ALL dims disappear and the origin indicator goes sick.

Revit :: Missing Reference Other View Section Tags

Jul 26, 2013

Revit 2014.

We created floor plans, created actual wall sections. Then we placed countless section markers that Reference Other Views with the SIM text by them. I would expect to go into the roof plan or elevation and see those same section markers. For some reason they do not show in any other view besides the view in which they were placed. The actual wall section markers show up. Just not the ones placed that reference another view.

Same in reverse. Go into elevation, draw a section marker that references other view. I would expect that marker to show in plan. But again no. I have not had this issue in previous versions of Revit. Just so far in 2014 this has been killing me trying to figure it out.

All views are set to Discipline: Coordination, and the original section markers are set to hide on scales courser than 1"=400' so they should show. Visibility graphics has sections turned on. There is nothing that shows with the light bulb.

Revit :: How To Turn Off Or Control Meaningless Reference Points

Sep 28, 2012

When I make my rooms for a building, I want them to be a specific distance from the previous wall, say 10'. But when Revit measures the walls, it measures from the center line of the wall and not the edges. How do I correct this so it is measuring from the nearest edge so I'm not constantly having to think about how thick the wall was on each side and manually add 5 inchs or whatever it is in order to get a solid 10' room.

Also, when placing rooms, I have found that the program keeps making the reference distances from points halfway across the house. For example, if I want to make a room 10'x 10', and go to place the top wall of the room. If there is another wall across the hall or something that may intersect if you extend an imaginary line, the reference dimensions won't be 10' from the bottom wall, but it would be something like 4' 5 7/16" from that other room that has nothing to do with the wall I'm trying to place. Does that make sense? How do I turn off or control the meaningless reference points?
