Photoshop :: Window Does Not Display Unless Connected To External Monitor
Apr 20, 2012
I use a MBP connected it to an Apple Cinema Display used as an external monitor (not a dual display) when in my studio.
When I use Adobe Photoshop CS 5 without the monitor the image window does not display on the MBP. If I plug the external monitor in, the window is displayed correctly on the MBP. Photoshop is opening and "displaying" the image window offscreen. Nothing gets it back onscreen, except plugging in the external monitor.
I often use Photoshop away from my studio so this is a big problem. PShop is essentially unusable unless connected to an external monitor.

I have a external monitor connected to a laptop so there are two monitors used at the same time. The external monitor is having somewhat different constract and tone display result from the first one. So due to the different contrast setting, my external monitor is having a greater constrat than my main monitor, therefore a picture looks more constrasty in my external monitor. That being described, let me explain what the problem I have.
When I paint using Photoshop CC, I found that Photoshop seems to automatically adjust it's constrast display of that picture while moving around in the different monitor. In this case, I have Photoshop window opened in my external monitor and it has automatically reduced contrast without me noticing, so that the picture in Photoshop in my external monitor looks like having same contrast in that of my main monitor. It's not until I finish my paint and closed Photoshop and opened my paint using AcdSee did I spot the problem. All of a sudden the picture become way more contrasty than what I've been working on in my Photoshop application.
I was wondering what happened and did some testing. And it turns out while my Photoshop is opened in the external monitor. it will decrease the contrast of whatever displayed in it, if I move it back to the main monitor, the constrast is back.
This problem only happensin the case where I havce more than one monitor working. If I only have my main or external monitor on, Photoshop will not auto adjust the contrasts even the the contrasts of two monitors are different.
This have giving me a huge problem. With this auto adjust contrast thing I will not be able to produce accurate picture result because I do not have a fixed standard to look onto. Even the external monitor is contrasty at least I know I can expect the result I produced to be the same as that I see in the photoshop so different monitor doesn't matter. But now since Photoshop is reducing the contrast somehow I get a much contrasty result than I will have expect once I close Photoshop and open that picture in other application.
I took this by placing Photoshop between two monitors so the picture is slipt in two. As you can see Photoshop will auto adjust the contrast in the external monitor so one picture is having two completely different effect! Since monitor contrasts are not reflected in screenshot so you can clearly see the differences.
The reason I say photoshop adjusted the contrast is because I can see this happening, when I drag it to the second monitor without releaseing the mouse, the picture in it is still the same across two monitors. But once I release it, after one second the part in the external monitor changes.

I normally work with a Macbook connected to a 23" Cine display. Pulled the Macbook off the display, opened Photoshop, and the bottom of all the action panels (actions, layers, channels, etc...) are below the lower edge of the screen and there appears to be no way to recover them.
The program is essentially useless until I can get connected to a big display, simply to click on the bottom of these panels. What's the secret to resizing these?

A way to change the display order of pipes connected to the structure in a structure label? (plan and profile) Say you have a 10", 6" and 12" pipe connected to a structure, modeled in that order, so label would place them 10, 6, 12. we would like the label to display the order as 6,10, then 12 without having to drag the pipes off and then having to re-input inverts.

I have an Eizo external monitor connected to my MBP and use the external for editing. I have been doing so for a couple years now and with all versions of Lightroom (even 4.2). I have always been able to see the changes/edits real-time on the external monitors when adjusting something with one of the LR sliders. Ever since I installed the latest LR update (4.3)- I don't see changes realtime. I have to wait until I let go of the mouse/slider to see the changes/adjustments.

Mid-job (and of course now that I need to color correct), PP CC has stopped exporting video to my external monitor. I have tried trashing prefs (holding Shift+Opt at start-up) and it doesn't do the trick. In looking around, I've noticed people having this problem when using some BlackMagic cards, but my monitor is plugged directly into the Thunderbolt connector of my MacBook Pro. I've enclosed my Playback settings.
Oddly enough, when I fire up my old copy of PP CS6 it plays back to my external monitor just fine.
I've had had enough late-night edits that I may have inadvertently initiated some keystroke that changed a setting, but I can't think of what that would be or why a Preference Trash wouldn't reset it.

I'm using CS2 but the same thing happens in CS with a Dell 24-inch LCD monitor. An inch doesn't equal an inch and I'm not sure why. If, for instance, I open a letter-sized image file and the navigator zoom control is set at 100%, the actual dimensions of the image onscreen are 6 3/4 inches by 8 3/4 inches rather than 8 1/2 x 11. I can't find a preference for this in Photoshop and think it's probably an adjustment on the monitor but haven't been able to make it right.

Photoshop CC 14.0 x64 / Mac OS X 10.8.4What kind(s) of image file(s)? Affecting PSDs and JPGs. Not PNGs, those are workingIf you are getting error message(s), what is the full text of the error message(s)? No error message What were you doing when the problem occurred? Setting up new monitor.Has this ever worked before? No and yes, monitor is new but, I still have Photoshop CS6 and that works fine. What other software are you running? At the moment: Chrome, AI, Calendar, Textedit, and System Preferences.Tell us about your computer hardware. MacBook Pro with 15" Retina display (set to the "More Space" setting), 8GB RAM, 2.4 GHz i7, 172GB free space on the SSD. Monitor is Hanns.G HE225DPB 1920x1080 at 60HzHas this ever worked before?
As I drag the window back and forth between the external display and my laptop display, the previous state briefly shows. When I drag it to the external monitor it looks ok for a split second in vertical bands that refresh to solid black. Same when I'm dragging the window back, the window remains black on my main laptop monitor until it refreshes back to normal, in the same vertical-band fashion. The frame of the window, including rulers looks ok, but the image area, including the canvas color turns black. This blackness can be captured in a screenshot.
On the PNG that is working, I do get some black as the image resizes between displays (stays at 100% but on the lower res monitor it doubles in size). In CS6 the image does not resize, the % changes (16.67 on external, 33.33% on laptop) and remains approximately the same size.
Perhaps this is more of a bug than something I can do anything about, but I am unable to login to Photoshop.com. I get an "it is no longer possible to create an account" message, even though I already have an account.

I installed AutoCAD on a brand new Lenovo W530 with 2 graphic cards: Integrated Intel and Nvida K2000M. When I just work on the built in screen AutoCAD does not seem to work well, the mouse movement lags. The problem is gone immediately when I simply extend my desktop onto an external screen.. That is all I do : FN key + projector icon, choose extend desktop and enter -> AutoCAD works great.
Here is some background info / things I have tried:
1) I disabled Nvidia Optimus in BIOS to makre sure all graphics is on the Nvidia (i.e. disable integrated graphics) -> this did not solve the problem, also after applying the extend desktop trick
2) In the Nvidia 3d settings I made sure that AutoCAD works with the Nvidia card.
3) Nvidia drivers are upto date
4) When I open AutoCAD it appears in the nvida window (in the taskbar) that shows which programs are used by nvidia
5) After extending the desktop I stay with AutoCAD on the builtin screen

On a MacBook Pro 15-inch retina display running OS 10.8.3, in Photoshop CS6: after launching PS, the work window is too tall for the monitor display. The bottom is cut off: there are no bottom scroll bars or nor any of the page info, I can't grab the resizing corner to change window dimensions. Also, I can't change from Standard Screen Mode: neither the left tool bar nor the F key has any effect. I've quit and restarted both the PS app and entire computer but problem persists.

I am talking about PSE 11. How can I move the tool-palette or the Video window on a second Monitor, as was possible in PSE 10?
In PSE 10 it was possible to use all tools in one palette with one click in the Quick-Mode. Now in PSE 11 we have to open each individual tool before we can use it? After the action this tool closed, so that we have to open it again in the next step. This takes much more time. Is ist possible to switch back to the arrangement of PSE 10?

now that i am weeding myself off of my Intuous and using my Cintique as my mouse-source for both of my monitors, it is more important to have my macro (and other CorelDraw windows) open on my second monitor (where CorelDraw is).
presently, i have Ultramon to force-open Coreldraw onto my second monitor; but when i open a macro window (such as Select Same), it opens on my primary monitor.
is there a setting to change this? or (shiver) a line of code to add to the macro itself?

I have an asus laptop running windows 7. I currently have Photoshop cs5.1 extended as well as lightroom3. I just purchased an external monitor (wide Gamut Asus PA246q) I do most of my editing and corrections on this monitor. I use the spyder4pro for calibration software on both my external and laptop monitor. I know the laptop monitor is not a great editing monitor, but I calibrated it anyway. Realizing its limitations, I use the external monitor for all use in Photoshop. My laptop display is set up as my “main display” in windows 7 and with my Nvidia GeForce GTX 560m card.
When running Photoshop cs5 on my external monitor, if I look under the color settings in my working color space, it lists the monitor RGB profile as my laptop display. Does this mean that my external monitor is using the laptop profile? Some say yes, others no… if this is the case is there any way to fix this other that making my external display my “primary display”? I haven’t noticed the external monitor to have any color shifts or inaccurate colors, but I want to be sure Photoshop is correctly choosing the external monitors profile and outputting accurate colors.
As I mentioned earlier, I also use lightroom as well. This too is located on my external monitor this should not be an issue either correct?

When I soft proof an image in Lightroom (5) and in Photoshop (CS6) on my external display there is a noticeable difference between the two proofs.
This is the case both with "simulate paper & ink" on and off (with matching settings in both applications) and with a variety of different profiles being used. On my laptop screen the proofs always match (between Photoshop and Lightroom).
On the external display with soft proofing off there is an exact match between images in LR and PS. With soft proofing on saturated areas of images (particularly reds, greens and yellows) become noticeably less saturated and blocked up in LR as compared to PS. Subdued colours appear to match. It's almost like they are both using the same profile but Lightroom is squashing it into a smaller gamut. I'm fairly sure PS is correct and LR is the one with something going wrong.
I'd like to sort it as I'd prefer to soft proof in Lightroom as that's where I print from. I've read up a lot on colour management and can't find a solution.
(I'm on a Macbook pro running 10.8.4 and the external display is an NEC Spectraview 271 (euro version of PA271W), the display is calibrated and profiled with Spectraview 5, with an i1 Display Pro. Working space in PS is Prophoto RGB and it's set to preserve embedded profiles. I've checked with various test images but mostly been using Bill Atkinon's printer test image. I set up the image in LR and PS to match on screen position and with the same colour (white) background, I can then flick back and forth and there should be no change but there is and it's very obvious.)

I’ve got a question about external drives display in the folder tree. For some reason, when I add a folder on an external drive, I get a new “Volumes” folder, and then the drive appears as a folder under the “Volumes” folder. So, instead of having a quick view of which drives are connected, I get a bunch of “missing images” question marks on the folders when the drives disconnect.I don’t get the extra collapsable bar (Under Macintosh HD) as in your video.

When we make an external threaded part, like a stud or something, I'd like to save my lathe guys some time looking things up by showing the pitch diameters on the thread callouts.
I've looked through some posts on this and it doesn't seem like there's an easy way to do it in an automated fashion, even though the data is in the Thread.xls file. I'd really like to not have to look it up to make every print.
First, I thought I'd just use the "Custom Thread Designation" field, but as soon as I changed it in the XLS file, I kept getting alerts in Inventor saying that there was an error in the thread family because the callout applied to multiple fit classes or something like that. So that didn't work out very well. So....
1. Is there a way to do this?
2. What is the point of the "custom thread designation" infrastructure? Am I not using it correctly?
