- if select a number of any raster or shape layers and press Cmd-J - those layers are copied and placed on top on layer palette. In history added "Duplicate Layer". It's perfect.

- if select a number of any shape layers and press Cmd-J - those layers are COMBINED INTO ONE and placed on top on layer palette as ONE layer. In history added "Shape Layer via Copy". It's bad.

I don't want to get one combined shape layer. I still want to get that number of shape layer copies. Why it combines? Is there any settings to turn this combine off?

Apr 13, 2012 When I duplicate a layer, sometimes the layer will automatically duplicate as a copy within the same document, and sometimes it will open the dialog box that allows duplicating to another document.
It seems to happen randomly, on both iMacs I use, as far back as I can remember (using CS4 now).

Aug 21, 2013I've brought this up before and didn't get an answer but now that my project is hundreds of layers big and using 12 layer comps, this is becoming increasingly annoying and affecting my project flow:

When will the issue be resolved where when you duplicate a shape layer that has previously had specific anchor points selected (but that none are currently selected since the entire layer is selected in the layers pallete and I am using the move tool, not direct select tool), it duplicates only the previously selected points.

It's a huge waste of precious time to have to:duplicate a layer. realize that only a portion of the layer got duplicated.delete that new layer select the original layer choose the direct select tool click on shape to show the anchor pointshit escape so all points are deselected then try again

Oct 27, 2012I've been working with Mac CS5 since it came out. And Mac Photo Shop in general since the early 90's. That said. This just started today right in the middle of a project:

Normally I hold down my Option Key and drag a layer down to the New Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers pane. Now I get a dialog popping up asking me if to give the duplicate a name (if it's multiple layers), or to ask if the default name is OK.

This wasn't happening earlier in the day. Why has this all of a sudden started happening? How can I turn the pop-up off? I've tried resetting the prefs with Cmd-Opt-Shift on reopening PS5.

Yes, I know I can do this with Cmd-J, but I've doing the Opt-Drag methods for many years, and that's now how I'm used to working. Running i Mac with 8 GB RAM, OSX 10.8.2. RAM usage set to 70% default. Photo Shop CS5 10.0.4 x32.

Sep 14, 2012When using floating windows for images it is very straightforward to copy content from one image to the other.With docked windows in cs6 there's of course the duplicate layer-feature but there's certainly also a drag and drop method. But how to get this to work? I tried dragging Layers and Ctrl-tabbed, I dragged the Layers onto the tab of another image and tried so by holding all sorts of modifier-key.combinations.No avail. So what was the correct way to copy from one image to another by using Drag and Drop?

May 4, 2009a way to duplicate a layer behind a layer, rahter than in front of a layer? Maybe through an action script? I have tried a few times without luck. ...basically, I do a lot of architectural photo composites. When I am placing trees, I often duplicate layers, and scale, and tint to fill in area. But when I duplicate the layer allways goes in front, rather than behind. Since I can only scale down to keep my resolution crisp, I then have to manually drag that layer down the list, so it is behind the layer that was duplicated.

1. I open Paint.net 3.5.10 and click the NEW button, then click OK in the New dialog box.
2. I create some plain text. I am using Arial 26 font and solid black color. The Layers window has one layer named Background.
3. I open up the Drop Shadow plug-in and just mess around with it, but nothing happens.
I have a feeling I'm missing a step in between steps 2 and 3. Do I need to duplicate the layer, or add a new layer? If I do, what do I have to do once the second layer is created?

Nov 18, 2011An image of a tree with fine branches in winter against a sky I want to darken. My goal is to create a duplicate layer of the image to darken but where the tree is transparent so I can put the darkened layer on top of the orignal image with an undarkened tree. Before my computer crashed, I used a plugin for this called, I thought, Alpha Mask. In this example, by selecting a spot on the tree I could make either everything the color of the tree or everything not disappear into transparency. But I can't seem to find the plugin now. I did look at the index of plugins and found some listings under Alpha, but none are described as the tool I need here (best I can tell).

Jun 7, 2004I have a directory of 100 images in a directory that I am going to add to my online photo album. I want to run these images through some image optimization to reduce the size and enhance the colors. BUT, when I do this, the modified date of the image gets changed to the current date. My online photoalbum uses this modifed date as the pictures date. So after my pictures are all uploaded to my online photo gallery, the dates are not correct and pictures are not in any date order.
is there a way to tell photoshop to NOT update this date when modifying an image?
What are all of your processes for modifying images and tracking the actual image date?

Sep 22, 2008I open any kind of file or when I create a new file it takes Photoshop at least 30 secs to open or create the file. I also have PS installed on another computer (with the same specs) where I don't have this problem.
why it takes PS so long to open/create files? I'm using a laptop with a Core 2 Duo processor and 2GB of DDR2 ram.
Photoshop :: Boot PS Several Times...
Feb 15, 2009I have a small niglling issue with my copy of Photoshop CS3 on Vista Ultimate 64 bit and I never use to get.
For the past several months I have had to click the PS icon (usually in my quick launch) several times before photoshop will actually boot up. Sometimes I can get PS to boot up on the first click, sometimes 2 (usually) but other times I have to click it bout 6+ times before I see the PS splash screen and it starts?
However, PS is doing something on this non-booting clicks, cos my Task Manager shows I have several processes of PS running, but they all use significantly less memory than the actual opened PS. So for example, if I had to click 6 times, the one that is open may be using 71k, but all the other ones will be using 4k, I then manually stop those processes and PS works fine.
This isn't a major problem cos I can get PS to boot and function as it is suppose to, but it its somewhat annoying when I have to keep doing this process everytime I want to run PS.
My specs (incase its needed) are:
Windows Vista Ultimate Retail x64
Intel Q9550 @ 3.6GHz
4GB PC2-8500 Corsair Dominator Ram
1x 150GB WD Velociraptor 10,000RPM HDD
1x 1TB Samsung F1 HDD
ATi 4870x2 2GB Graphics Card
Also, incase it matters, I have a copy of Flash CS3 installed too, both PS and Flash are 100% legimate copies.

Sep 23, 2013I have had a problem with opening some PSD template files. It doesn't happen all the time and it doesn't happen with every template. All of the templates were downloaded as zip files and opened and saved using Photoshop CS 5 on a Windows XP PC. When this happens I am getting an error message to the effect that the file can't be opened as it was done in a different version of PS. When the files were saved, they were saved as PSD files and the compatibility check box is always checked. The thing is, sometimes the file will open and sometimes the same one won't.Â

Sep 25, 2012Using PS CS6 on WIndows 7 64. All drivers updated. When I set 5 copies in the print menu, with either PSDs, TIFFs, or JPGs, PS sends the same job five times rather than telling the printer to just make 5 copies.

This happens when using either the color laser or Epson R3000. This does NOT happen when using non-CS6 products. On a 25 print run, this takes an abnormally long time.What I HAVE found is that PS is NOT passing the information to the printer. In other words, even though I set PS to multiple copies, when I click printer options the number of copies has not been passed to the driver.

Jun 22, 2012very long image loading times when loading an image into CS6 from LR4.When I right click an image in LR4 and select edit-in CS6, CS6 immediately starts up, and loads. But after CS6 is fully up on my screen, I get a spinning ball first, then spinning white/grey circles, until my selected image appears within CS6.

Photoshop :: Reduce PSD Loading And Saving Times
Nov 4, 2011I am currently having a little problem working with Photoshop: I am designing posters and other prints for a festival here, and we usually print the largest posters on A1 intl paper full color. That means working in a huge 300dpi file with quite a lot of layers.
The issue I'm having trouble with concerns the loading and saving of the files (the biggest ones are around 1.1GigaByte). Simply loading the file into PS takes over 5 minutes, slowing down my computer drastically. Saving the file in a .psd format takes even longer, over 10 minutes sometimes.
I doubt this is an issue with the computer, as it has reasonable specs and is only a few months old. So how to reduce the file size of these .psds and thereby optimize their loading time. Because working like this is extremely time consuming and unproductive...
