Photoshop :: Custom Shape Gradient Mask

is there any way in photoshop cs to create a gradient mask inside of a certain shape, so that the gradient is black on the edges and turns white when it reaches inner parts of the shape?

My question is about gradients and anti-aliasing. I'm using PS 7.0 and what I want to do is use the custom shape tool, and fill the shape with a gradient. Not difficult, but here's where I get caught. After the shape is filled, I'd like the edges to remain anti-aliased.
For example, if I use the custom shape tool to create a hand print with anti-aliased edges, then use the magic want to select it. Next I grab my fore and back colors, choose a linear gradient and drag it in the appropriate direction. The selected shape is filled the way I want, but when I deselect, the edges have become pixelated. Is there a way to avoid this and keep them smooth? I tried using the blur tool and blur filter, but they don't quite have the same look.

I need to make an object or group transparent towards its borders.
In particular, I drew a red heart and gave it a yellow contour with 20 steps, imitating a gradient. So the heart looks like it has a gradient (from red to yellow) towards its border.
Now I need this heart to also be transparent towards the border. The transparency should begin somewhere in the red part and slowly mask everything and it should end just before the outer border, which should be completely transparent.
The radial transparency tool does not produce good results, because the heart borders are not uniformly transparent. I need a mask exactly of the heart shape.
how to do it inside CorelDRAW?

In Photoshop CS6, when you have a shape layer with a layer mask, and the two are not linked together, and the layer mask is selected, you should be able to scale the layer mask independently of the shape. What actually happens is the shape gets scaled and the layer mask stays untouched. In fact, even if you option-click on the layer mask to show the mask by itself, and then try to scale it, you still end up scaling the shape instead of the mask. Even if you go as far as to make a pixel selection of the layer mask and attempt to scale the pixels, the shape still gets scaled and the layer mask still stays put! Unbelievable!
This works correctly in CS4, but not in CS6 (don't know about CS5).

I want to make a vector shape from a path. Is there a way to bypass having to define a new custom shape? I just want to quickly add the vector shape to a new layer, but I don't need it defined as it'll just be used once.

I am trying to fade the left section of a PSD image I created so that it gradually fades to nothing using a Rectangular Marquee.
The problem is that I cannot get the gradient itself to change after I have used the Gradient Editor to make it 90% Black on the left & 10% gray on the right.
Seems this color choice in a Layer mask would have the desired effect, but after editing the gradient still it looks & works the same as the default. (No Change to the Gradient)
Can someone explain to me how to customize the Gradient in Photoshop CS?

I am using CS3 Mac, 10.0.1
I open a JPG and enter quick mask. I use the gradient tool with a radial gradient and make a small gradiated area. It appears in red fading out to the edges. So far so good.
I USE to be able to exit quick mask, and that gradient would now be a selection. What is happening now though is when I exit quick mask, the area selected is the entire image and not the gradiated area.

I have not created a document yet and would like some thought on how to do this: I want to use a continuous tone black and white image which is somewhat close to what would be a 'knockout' but with soft edges - so it gradates appropriately over the background image I want to use, making the black part of the image used as the mask become much of the effect of a gradient mask: the background image shows through whereever there is the 'black' and 'tone' of the image.
my first thought is to create a layer mask and then paste the black and white image onto that, but I'm not sure if that will work to accept the 'soft tones' of the image and work appropriately. What steps I should take to make this effect work?

On screen this show when doing a simple layer mask fade with the gradient tool. (notice the hard transition in the black) The if I flatten it it looks fine, like this.
I don't understand why all of a sudden it is doing this, same with brushes. Just seems to happen in the layer mask which is really deceiving.

I've been using Photoshop intensely this year for school assignments, and I'm learning to get around very well. The issue I'm currently having is that it want to make a layer mask that fades from the mask to the image behind, from color to transparent to create a smooth transition.
I've attached a sample image of what I'm trying to do. Just note, I used a very round-about method to get this image, but I want to achieve the same effect with a vector mask.

how I can get the black-to-transparent gradient that is present in the photo below? I don't know how to make a gradient around a shape so that it follows the edges.
Also, I want to build something similar to the blue background, but in green. My plan is to use a single gradient with twenty or so color stops in it. Does that seem like the right way to go about it?

I have cannot paint in black to conceal on a layer mask. I have "NORMAL" mode set and the foreground color is set to black. When I paint or use the gradient tool in "normal" mode with black it paints to transparent. Before the upgrade it was normal. I have this problem on both CS6 apps pc-and-laptop.

Im trying to design a metalic logo for my boss...
Im following the 3D metalic turorial on here and mine looks nothing like it...Im pretty sure my problem is with my metalic Grandiant, maybe someone has created a custom gradiant for the layer styles and would be willing to send it to me.
I messed around with it but I can't figure out what on earth is going on.
Im putting a PNG with a tranparent BG of our Logo...
The image Im working with has a Rez of 300.

I open a new project and add a layer, then create a rounded rectangle, is there a way to fill just that rounded rectangle with a gradient. I keep getting a message that the layer is not directly editable or something. I need to just play with the thing, I'm sure - eventually I'd porbably sort it all out. But I got a job creating a web page for a mortgage company and I wanted some custom buttons with a gradient fill -

When I apply a gradient to a shape layer, the gradient is always applied as a rectangle.
e.g.
The red rectangle implies the edges of the gradient. It's a horizontal gradient. What I'm after is for the gradient to be applied in a way that uses the shape layer for the edges... so the same value will be applied evenly to the left side of the shape and then spread evenly to the right. Is this possible?

I've unlinked the layer mask from the shape layer, and made sure the layer mask thumbnail is selected in the layers palette.
If I do a cmd-t on OSX to transform, Photoshop (CS6) selects the shape layer path to transform instead of the mask layer, even though the mask thumbnail is still selected and even if I have a marque selection. Is this a bug?

I've been using a radial gradient on a mask to create a selection, then messing with the selection with various tools, e.g. saturation, blur, contrast. All this on a duplicate of the background layer, of course.
On my most recent attempt, I noticed "rings" in a portion of the finished image. Is the sequence in which I'm using the tools the problem? Should I work on the top layer first, THEN create the selection? Here's a crop from the image:

I have a photo and I would like to blur the bottom of the image while leaving the top of the image sharp, similar to limiting the depth of field by using a large f-stop. I created a gradient mask and then used Filters > Blur but it is not working. If I choose the layer that I created the mask on and choose blur, nothing happens. If I choose the layer (background) under the mask then the whole image blurs.

I'm coming from Fireworks.
A technique I use often in my ui work is to combine a texture with a gradient that fades the gradients color and the pattern to transparent.
In Fireworks, this can be done on a single layer with no mask. The transparency of the gradient affects the pattern.
This is not the case in Photoshop. I am wondering how I can accomplish the same thing in Photoshop, while keeping everything vector.

I created this logo in Illustrator. I made my basic shapes with a pen tool, put a vector grunge texture over the top of the shapes and then used "make opacity mask" to get my grunge effect. As you can see in the screenshot of my illy it is all very clean and looking like it should. When you open my other picture you can see that once I transferred (cmd+copy cmd+paste) the logo into PS you can now see faint lines of where the shapes used to be *highlighted in red*. I also tried placeing the .ai file in ps but got the same effect. I am using all pantone colors on the logo, both documents are set to 300 dpi....err I cant think of anything else. PS is in RGB, Illustrator is in CMYK (but using Pantone)
How do I get my logo to look as good in PS as it does in Ilustrator?
