GIMP :: Using Gradient Mask To Blur Part Of Image?

Nov 29, 2010

I have a photo and I would like to blur the bottom of the image while leaving the top of the image sharp, similar to limiting the depth of field by using a large f-stop. I created a gradient mask and then used Filters > Blur but it is not working. If I choose the layer that I created the mask on and choose blur, nothing happens. If I choose the layer (background) under the mask then the whole image blurs.

GIMP :: Radial Gradient Selection On Mask

Jan 4, 2014

I've been using a radial gradient on a mask to create a selection, then messing with the selection with various tools, e.g. saturation, blur, contrast. All this on a duplicate of the background layer, of course.

On my most recent attempt, I noticed "rings" in a portion of the finished image. Is the sequence in which I'm using the tools the problem? Should I work on the top layer first, THEN create the selection? Here's a crop from the image:

Photoshop :: Creating Gradient Mask Using B&W Photo Image

Nov 19, 2013

I have not created a document yet and would like some thought on how to do this: I want to use a continuous tone black and white image which is somewhat close to what would be a 'knockout' but with soft edges - so it gradates appropriately over the background image I want to use, making the black part of the image used as the mask become much of the effect of a gradient mask: the background image shows through whereever there is the 'black' and 'tone' of the image.

my first thought is to create a layer mask and then paste the black and white image onto that, but I'm not sure if that will work to accept the 'soft tones' of the image and work appropriately. What steps I should take to make this effect work?

Photoshop :: Fading A Layer Mask To Image -- Gradient Stroke?

Oct 3, 2007

I've been using Photoshop intensely this year for school assignments, and I'm learning to get around very well. The issue I'm currently having is that it want to make a layer mask that fades from the mask to the image behind, from color to transparent to create a smooth transition.

I've attached a sample image of what I'm trying to do. Just note, I used a very round-about method to get this image, but I want to achieve the same effect with a vector mask.

GIMP :: Printing Image - Blur Around The Wording?

Jan 17, 2014

I've created my business card using gimp a few times. I usually us Vista Print to print it. The picture resolution is at 300 but when I get the printed image it has a little blur around the wording (that's the best way I can describe it). It's not a clear print. What do I need to do to have a more clear image to print? When I see the image on my computer it's crystal clear... I just wish it would print that way.

GIMP :: Trim / Cut Around Object In Image And Have Cloud Or Blur Around Edge

I am trying to accomplish something but i am not sure of the correct terms to use to describe it. I would like to "trim" or "cut" around an object in an image and have a "cloud" or "blur" around the edge. I have included a link below with an example of what i am trying to accomplish from an ebay listing. If this is possible with gimp, if not with what other program?

GIMP :: Apply Gradient To Image?

Dec 3, 2011

I have an image I am trying to create that I want to fade from right to left. In other words, I want the right side of the image to be full clarity, color, etc., and have it generally fade to almost gone by the time it gets to the left edge. Think of it as a gradient for an image.

Any way to do that with Gimp?

I found a blur tool. If I cannot do this with some kind of gradient tool, is there a "fade" tool?

GIMP :: Add Gradient To Existing Image?

Jan 10, 2013

I am unable to add a gradient to an image. I do the following:

-Select a gradient (I just selected a default gradient to start off with)

-Then I select a region of the image that I want to apply the gradient to (I use the rectangle select tool)

-Then I switch back to the gradient tool

-Then I hover the cursor over the selected region of the image. This is where I expect to be able to click the mouse down and drag to create the gradient. However, when the cursor hovers over the image the cursor turns into a black circle with a line through it (which obviously is telling me "no, you can't do this"). Obviously, when I click and drag, nothing happens.

Photoshop :: Use Gradient To Control Blur?

Jul 21, 2012

I have a photo of a coffee cup on some wood with decent grain, but the exposure has blasted out some of the grain...I've done a passable job of adding in what could be taken for grain, especially if I blur it in a sort of DOF thing...

can I use a gradient to control this blur, as in no blur at one end of the gradient, to more blur by gradient's end?

I'm sure the answer is yes

Photoshop :: How Can I Create A Gradient Blur?

Mar 3, 2009

I want to create a blur effect that starts from one edge of a photo and gets stronger (more blurred) as it goes away from that point. This specific effect only needs to travel in one direction, so it doesn't need to be circular.

I don't want to use the method of creating a second copy of the photo on a separate layer, blurring it, and using a gradient on a layer mask, because this doesn't achieve the effect I'm looking for, since you can still see some of the non-blurred image under the blurred one.

GIMP :: Coloring B&W Image With Gradient Colors?

Jan 20, 2013

I'm designing a banner for my gaming guild's forums. I have draw the logo/banner and textured it. After Desaturating the image im left with a nice B&W image.

I know of many ways to color the image but everytime that I do the color doesn't match the other colors we have on the forums.

What I want to do is color the image according to a color gradient that we use on the forums.

I would like to have the whitest pixels of the banner be the lightest color from the gradient(#c0a864) and the darkest pixels of the banner be the darkest color from the gradient(#917341). And have GIMP interpolate between those two colors for the other pixels in between the lighest/darkest.

Similar to how a Bumpmap works, only instead of simulating depth based on the range of colors from Black to White, I want it to colorize the banner.

Paint.NET :: Gradient Versus Gaussian Blur

Apr 25, 2012

I am wondering why the gradients that paint.net generate look so dull, and i've experimented with creating the gradient by just filling two colors and then applying gaussian blur. Is there a reason why the gradient looks dull? and is there already a tool for creating a gradient like a gaussian blur provides?

it looks like the gradient tool creates a lot of "in between" color, in my example gray. I've attached an example. The gradient is on the left, gaussian blur on the right.

GIMP :: Overlay Portion Of Image With Faded Map With Non-transparent Part Of Second Image

Apr 4, 2012

I have a PNG image with only one layer as a start point. It has a faded map on it.

I have a second PNG image with a hex grid on it. I do colour to Alpha to establish transparency on the hex grid for white filled hexes (others are not filled with white).

Now, I wish to overlay a portion of the first image with the faded map with the non-transparent part of the second image.

So I select by colour (for the hexes not filled with white) on the second image (the overlay) and I then paste to the first image (after creating a transparency layer and selecting it to receive the overlay).

I see the desired overlay section (minus any transparent stuff as expected), however it is centered over the map in the first image, not where I want it to be. It is a floating selection and must be anchored. So I select the anchor icon in the layer dialog and I think I anchor it into the transparency layer on the first image (that's what I'm trying to do anyway).

And then my problem:

I want to move the thing I just pasted in to the right place with respect to the underlying faded map. I attempt to use the move tool, but all I move is the background map (pretty much the opposite of what I want).

Nothing I do seems to let me reselect the pasted-in overlay so that I can move it.

Why I can't ever reposition the pasted in overlay? It should be in the transparency layer I created but even if I select all, I don't seem to be able to move anything other than the background image.

GIMP :: Ability To Copy / Cut Image Or Part From One Open Image Into Another

Nov 25, 2013

I have been using gimp now for about 2 months and have just upgraded my OS to Mavericks and upgraded Gimp to 2.8.8.

Upon doing this I seem to have lost the ability to copy/cut an image or part thereof from one open image into another... Example:

I have an image window open with a picture a car and I have an image window open with a race track back ground.

I want to copy the car from image 1 into image 2, but for some reason I cannot do this function anymore. When attempting it, once the item is copies to the clipboard and I then swap to the second image, when I paste as a new layer it pastes the clipboard from that image and not the image from the first window...

Photoshop :: Gaussian Blur On Photo Against Gradient Background?

May 3, 2012

Using PS CS4 on XP. I just got a job back from the printer company & I am noticing some lines that didn't appear on my print out here (on xerox color printer machine) to compare. I didn't really catch them on the proof either, but they used an epson proof and we printed on 100# gloss text stock for the final.

What I have going on is a gradient background (using shape layer and gradient layer style effect) from a white to a light tan. Top to bottom on a regular Letter size sheet. In the upper right hand corner I have a image of a face that had that same light tan in the background. I faded this image into the gradient background by using gaussian blur.

This is not very noticable in the file, but I can tell that it is there...you have to really focus your eyes to see it, but it's there, a line going around the image where the gaussian blur is. I'll attach a photo of the edge. I guess what I'm saying is it is not smooth - the image edges being blurred into the gradient background, but printed off a regular printer, it looks smooth. Is there anything I can do to prevent this in the future?

GIMP :: Generate Mask File For Scientific Image Processing?

Jul 23, 2013

I opened a 1024x1024 image in GIMP, and manually broke it up into fully black and fully white sections. This way, I can open it in my C program and then load the array into memory using the fread function.

I haven't been able to work out how to do this. I need to avoid using any files with metadata in them...And unfortunately, even the ppm format has a handful of characters at the beginning. Is there a way to do this?
