I'm learning how to use a Gaussian blur mask to airbrush portraits, but one issue I keep running into is that whenever I paint close to a colour other than skin (e.g., glasses, hair, shirt) then the paintbrush picks up that colour and paints it on the skin. Even when I try a very small diameter of brush or increase the hardness to 100%, it still shows up. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI must have fat fingered something and I now when I click on the Eraser Tool or the Brush Mask Tool instead of getting a circle or square, I get and icon of the tool instead. They still work but they're harder to use without seeing the circle or square depending on what's selected. I've been using Corel for many years and never had this happen and I can't figure out how to switch back.

When I change the settings for 1 brush... say I add some jitter to a smooth brush - then suddenly the other brushes get the same jitter applied to them.
How can I set the brushes so that each brush has a different setting that doesn't change when I change any other brush settings?
p.s. I also don't get why Adobe has you lock a brush by UNlocking it? Seems to me it should be the other way around?
using the blur brush tool a few times in a row completely crashes Photoshop CS6. is this a known bug?

CS2 and a AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual core CPU 4200+ 2.21GHz CPU /1GB RAM (6 years old along with the version CS2 running WinXP SP3) I plan on upgrading this year my hardware, OS (to WIn 7 64-bit) and the Adobe Production Premium suite to CS6 (After upgrading to CS5.5 since I am ineligible for the upgrade from CS2. )
One of the things that has always bothered me in Photoshop CS2 was when I set a paintbrush or a blur brush to 300 pixels wide and I'm working even on a small 4x6" 300dpi canvas If I make a brushstroke it takes seconds to make a rendered stroke. I plan on doing digital paintings with a Wacom tablet 8x10, 11x14, 16x20" in size with Photoshop CS6.
I read that as of 2008 CS 3 Photoshop will use the GPU for rendering/processing some effects. I have a photo and I would like to blur the bottom of the image while leaving the top of the image sharp, similar to limiting the depth of field by using a large f-stop. I created a gradient mask and then used Filters > Blur but it is not working. If I choose the layer that I created the mask on and choose blur, nothing happens. If I choose the layer (background) under the mask then the whole image blurs.

I worked in photoshop a lot of years and now I started to work in CDX6. Very familiar with CorelDraw but the PP is a unknown land for me.
Does anyone have any advice on what Unsharp Mask settings I should use? Percent, Threshold and Radius? I use settings of 75% on images taken with my digital camera, but what about Theshold and Radius? Where do they come in?

Unfortunetly for me, I not only lost the book that came with the class I've forgotten the settings entirely. If there is a thread pertaining to this or if someone can help me out I would appreciate it. I did look and even searched (twice!) first, but with the wealth of info here I may have passed by it.
View 6 Replies View RelatedOk so I have Photoshop CS4, and for some crazy reason when I add a Layer mask to a layer, and then try to paint with black to "erase" a portion of the image, it DOES erase, BUT not fully! It is as if the transparency is set to like 95%, and I can still see a very light semi transparent ghosted portion of the image. Its as if it is not fully hiding the pixels. I have checked and I definitely have the opacity of the brush set to 100% and I am using black and not a shade of grey. Any ideas?? Ive tried turning off the open gl and restarting Photoshop to no avail. And i have also rest the preference file by holding ctl,alt,shift when starting PS.
another issues is that when i choose a brush to paint with, if i use the [] bracket keys to increase the size of the brush, at some point About 75% of the brush just disappears! I can still paint with it, and it paints fine, but the "preview" circle that shows the size of the brush is only showing the top left corner! weird stuff. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated and here is the info on my video card and OS.

No matter what 1 single pixel brush i use this will happen... no matter which computer i use cs6 on and different copies of the installation. Anyway have any insight into this? frankly... it's somewhat limiting that i can't use the brush for stroking a shape if i need a pixel line and yet soft curves that a pencil won't get you.
I am not very good with photoshop, and if there was a brush tool setting to make it just like an actual paint brush.

I made a new layer from the original layer, used filter> other> high pass (set to 3.5) then image> adjustments>desaturate. Inverted the layer added a vector mask and inverted that as well. I set the blending mode to overlay, and the foreground color to white.

Next I place the image on top of a background and see that it needs some additional adjustments. How do I now get back to the Refine Edge window where I can see the changes I made previously and modify some of the settings? When I reopen the Refine Edge window the settings from before are no longer there.

I know how to do this and i was wondering if there is a way to apply a gradient colour to the stroke at the same time. it is a curved line so a gradient mask doesn't achieve what I need. i want the line to consistently change colour as you go along it even round curves.

After much configuring and comparing CS4 vs CS3, I found that these settings do improve CS4's brush lag significantly. CS3 is still faster, but these settings made CS4 brush strokes a lot more responsive.
NOTE: these do not improve clone tool performance, the best way to improve clone performance right now seems to be to turn off the clone tools overlay feature.
Perhaps Adam or Chris from Adobe could explain what is happening here. The most significant option that improved performance appears to be the "Use for Image Display - OFF". I have no idea what this feature does or does not do but it does seem to be the biggest performance hit. The next most influential setting seems to be "3D Interaction Acceleration - OFF"
Set the following settings in Photoshop CS4 Preferences:
OpenGL - ON
Vsync - OFF
3D Interaction Acceleration - OFF
Force Bilinear Interpolation - OFF
Advanced Drawing - ON
Use for Image Display - OFF
Color Matching - ON
I have cannot paint in black to conceal on a layer mask. I have "NORMAL" mode set and the foreground color is set to black. When I paint or use the gradient tool in "normal" mode with black it paints to transparent.Before the upgrade it was normal. I have this problem on both CS6 apps pc-and-laptop.

I mean, it could be set to 1000% scattered, and the points I draw will still only be with a few pixels from my cursor (about 20 pixels or so). Is there a way to set scattering even more than this?

I accidently switched my brush tool settings. I now have this smart detailed brush tool setting that appears to be photo editing oriented. How can i reset to default where I can simply choose brush types, diameter, etc.
