View 2 Replies.I'm trying to figure out if I have my preferences set up in Photoshop set up correctly...I have 18 GB of RAM and my smudge tool isnt responding fast enough, its laggin and sluggish. Here's my system:
Dell Precision 690
Xenon Quad Core 8GHrtz
Geforce 560 Ti 1GB card
18GB RAM..
plenty of HD space in the TBs...
Â
I am particularly trying to find out what settings I can best set for my system to move fast enough in Photoshop CS6 Extended....Prefs>Performace>Â
Photoshop and system optimization
I am curious if anyone here knows how to really optimize the performance of photoshop CS. I am not getting very good performance, but I don’t know what is wrong. I am a pretty savvy user, so I can set settings and understand whatever I need to, I am just ignorant right now of what photoshop needs to really run at it’s best.
My system and setup is such:
-2.8 p4 hyperthreading
-2 gigs 400mhz pc3200 ram
-serial ATA C: drive, 80 gig
-serial ATA D: drive, 80 gig
-120 gig IDE partitioned, S: (10 gig scratch disk) and T: (110 gig storage)
-128meg Geforce 4 ti…
That is the basic setup of my performance parts. Everything is defragged and the computer runs fine.
My windows settings are:
-Processor Scheduling set to Programs
-Memory Usage set to System Cache
-one page file, set to the C: drive, 2000-3000 MB
My photoshop settings are:
-First Scratch is set to the S: drive (10 gig partition)
-Second scratch is set to the D: drive
-Cache Levels are at 8
-Available RAM is 86% = 1528mb
That is the basic setup.
Here is my problem – photoshop runs pretty clunky For instance, I just opened up a 2.17 meg image, first image of the day to be opened. Immediately my scratch indicator in the status bar reads “Scr: 1.91G/1.44G” and the actual file on the S: drive is 1.93 gigabytes. Also, the photoshop efficiency is at 24%. This is all without having done ANYTHING in photoshop so far. I opened the program, opened a 2 meg file, and those are the results I get.
It typically just gets worse from there. I’ll get major slowdowns, my efficiency will drop to 4 or 3%, the Scratch indicator will sometimes read “Scr: 2.31G/1.44G” or worse. Sometimes photoshop locks up for about 20 seconds or more, the title bars all go white like it’s not responding, and then comes back.
So I am at a loss. I have the hard drives, ram, and CPU for photoshop CS to run fast, right? I don’t see what it isn’t, unless I have something totally set to reduce performance in my swap file or scratches or something.
There are a few things I just don't get about brush settings. Sometimes it seems my brushes go all wonky.
Â
When I change the settings for 1 brush... say I add some jitter to a smooth brush - then suddenly the other brushes get the same jitter applied to them.
Â
How can I set the brushes so that each brush has a different setting that doesn't change when I change any other brush settings?
Â
p.s. I also don't get why Adobe has you lock a brush by UNlocking it? Seems to me it should be the other way around?
Or is there no fast forward or fast rewind in the timeline. Like double tapping the "L" key or something in other programs...
Editor of things...
what do "lock brush tip" in brush settings in photoshop cs

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a line path and I want to apply a brush stroke to it. I know how to do this and i was wondering if there is a way to apply a gradient colour to the stroke at the same time. it is a curved line so a gradient mask doesn't achieve what I need. i want the line to consistently change colour as you go along it even round curves.
View 5 Replies View RelatedFor anyone having horrible Brush lag, please try the following settings and report your findings in this thread.
After much configuring and comparing CS4 vs CS3, I found that these settings do improve CS4's brush lag significantly. CS3 is still faster, but these settings made CS4 brush strokes a lot more responsive.
NOTE: these do not improve clone tool performance, the best way to improve clone performance right now seems to be to turn off the clone tools overlay feature.
Perhaps Adam or Chris from Adobe could explain what is happening here. The most significant option that improved performance appears to be the "Use for Image Display - OFF". I have no idea what this feature does or does not do but it does seem to be the biggest performance hit. The next most influential setting seems to be "3D Interaction Acceleration - OFF"
Set the following settings in Photoshop CS4 Preferences:
OpenGL - ON
Vsync - OFF
3D Interaction Acceleration - OFF
Force Bilinear Interpolation - OFF
Advanced Drawing - ON
Use for Image Display - OFF
Color Matching - ON
I am thinking of a good way to organize my brushes. Now they are all in the settings window, in a row.I would liket to oganise them in folders, like they where in different boxes.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm having a difficult time figuring out why my PS CS5 is not loading my brushes properly.
Â
I see the brushes however Photoshop does not load their settings. They all are flate and hard.
Â
All my brushes before in PS CS2 worked properly so I don't understand why CS5 is not. And I have loaded CS5 brushes and still does not read their settings.
Â
Do I have to do something first before loading the brushes?
When I use the brush tool with scattering set to maximum, the range of scattering is still pretty narrow. I mean, it could be set to 1000% scattered, and the points I draw will still only be with a few pixels from my cursor (about 20 pixels or so). Is there a way to set scattering even more than this?
View 8 Replies View RelatedA few months ago, I bought a book that had some Photoshop brushes on its CD. Inside the book, each brush had some vallues written under description, for Painter and Photoshop. I have heard that Gimp can import Photoshop brushes but are the settings equivalent to the pnes in Photoshop? Here are some examples of what I mean:
Brodery - Opacity: 70-100%
Flow: 50%
Shape Dynamics:
Size Jitter: 0%
Min diameter: 0
or
Canopy- Opacity: 100%
Flow: 50%
Shape Dynamics:
Size Jitter: off
Angle Jitter: 0%
Roundness
Jitter: 73%
Minimum:
Roundness: 62%
Texture: Wrinkles
Scale: 45%
Texture Each
Tip: On
Mode: Multiply
Depht/Minimum
Depht: 100%
Depht Jitter: off
Diameter: 110px
Spacing: 15%
Scattering: Both
axes: 0%
Count: 1
Other Dynamics:
Opacity Jitter: 0%
Flow jitter: 0%
Could all these settings be done in Gimp? Are they equivalent? How to use them?
Dual Brush:
Diameter: 110px
Spacing: 15%
Scattering: both
I accidently switched my brush tool settings. I now have this smart detailed brush tool setting that appears to be photo editing oriented. How can i reset to default where I can simply choose brush types, diameter, etc.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI will change settings on a tool, use it for awhile, then change to a different tool. When I return to the first tool, the settings have reverted to the defaults. How do I keep them from changing while I am using a different tool?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm working on a project where I will have to do a lot of various scaling using Bilinear resampling. Is there a way to make this the default scaling method in PS CS6 (Mac OS).
I keep on forgetting to switch the scaling method, and thus often have to scale the image twice.
I'm learning how to use a Gaussian blur mask to airbrush portraits, but one issue I keep running into is that whenever I paint close to a colour other than skin (e.g., glasses, hair, shirt) then the paintbrush picks up that colour and paints it on the skin. Even when I try a very small diameter of brush or increase the hardness to 100%, it still shows up. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI followed a tutorial on how to make abstract images using abstract brushes. One of the attachments is from the tutorial. The other is my result.(you will know which is whose; I used the same brush)
There must be some brush settings I need to adjust, but the tutorial doesn't say anything about them. What am I doing wrong here?(messing with shape dynamics and scattering produced a better result, but it was too bright and still looked terrible.)
The current default 'stroke' setting on my PS is 3 pixels/Red...how do I change it?
The stroke setting to which I refer is when I double click a layer and want to surround it with a stroke line of color. I have searched everywhere and can't find where to change the default setting.
How do I make cursor size the same as paint brush size in CS6? It isn't and it makes selecting more difficult. Preferences>cursor does not seem to fix.

View 22 Replies View RelatedI'm at work and i'm getting this terrible bug where modifying a value for one of the Character settings result in some random large value. So far it happened for Font Size, Line Height, Character Spacing and Base Line Shift.
Â
It seems this issue has been around since CS6 was released, with dates ranging from Early 2012 to early 2013. This greatly impacts my work production.
Â
Just want to see if other issues were relevant and its true that when you transform the text, the character scaling goes wonky. So is there a solution to this yet? This issue has been around since early last year.
When changing brush size in CS6, I've noticed that it is has granular resolution from 0 pixels up to around 500pixels, incrementing in size very slowly. However, above 500 pixels it increases in size very rapidly, jumping to 800, 1200, 1500 and then into the 2000s.
Â
As most of the photos that I work on have a high pixel count I find that my ideal brush size is between 400 and 1000, occasionally I use it at around 100 pixels, and occasionally at 2500.
Â
Is there any way of changing the scale of the brush size so that it allows greater sensitivity in the 400 to 1000 range?
i have used photoshop for years now. However, I still have CS3 or 4 still. Anyway, my brackets ( [ ] ) aren't changing the brush size any more. Instead they're changing the opacity. I can't figure out how to change it back. I desperately need it to change my brush sizes again. It takes way too long doing them manually ;)
View 9 Replies View Relatedwhy Photoshop keeps changing settings for placing objects, image size etc.?
Â
For example: I create a new Photoshop document:
Â
    ppi: 300
    Width: 160 mm
    Heigth: 160 mm
Â
after clicking "OK", these go to 160,2 mm or less than 160 mm.
Â
The same with the sizes and places of objects etc. I create a 20 x 20 mm circle. One click later it is 19,89 x 19,89. I set it's location to X: 80 mm, Y: 80 mm. One click later: 80,02mm
how to change the numbers to the brush name in the brush preset picker?
Â
When you hover over a brush in the picker you get the name of the brush. I think it would work better if the numbers were replaced with the name of the brush.
what's the shortcut, if you're working w/ the brush tool?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm just beginning to use Gimp with my Thinkpad x230. It's got a pressure sensitive stylus with eraser to use on the screen, and in ubuntu it's basically an on-screen wacom.
One of the greatest things about this is that I can use Gimp like a souped up sketchpad, I can automatically change tools to eraser whenever I spin the pen around.
The only problem is that whenever I change the brush size for the pencil, then move over to eraser, Gimp uses the brush size I selected for the pencil for the eraser tool. This is super annoying in practice. Is there a way for Gimp to memorize which brush size I want for a given tool?
I am currently having a big problem with Brush Settings in Illustrator. It was working perfectly fine until the other day so I am worried I have clicked a button incorrectly. When I try and draw a line using the brush tool (and my tablet) I change the settings to, for example, Calligraphic 7pt Black with no stroke.
Â
As soon as I draw it sets itself to No Fill and creates a Stroke instead, which doesn't show the pressure sensitivity I use with my tablet. why it started doing this as it worked fine a few days ago but it is vital to my job, the "New Art Has Basic Appearance" box is unchecked.
I always used the number keys to set opacity in brush tool. Suddenly it now affects flow, not opacity. At the same time this functionality changed I started having to click on a mask for the [ ] keys to change brush size. I used to be able to change size without selecting the mask. Did I inadvertently change some setting? I am using CS5 12.0 x 64 on Mac in 10.6.8.Â
