Photoshop :: Use Gradient To Control Blur?
Jul 21, 2012
I have a photo of a coffee cup on some wood with decent grain, but the exposure has blasted out some of the grain...I've done a passable job of adding in what could be taken for grain, especially if I blur it in a sort of DOF thing...
can I use a gradient to control this blur, as in no blur at one end of the gradient, to more blur by gradient's end?
I'm sure the answer is yes

I want to make slightly curved arch blur effect, but I can't figure it out how to.
Using radial blur, it needs huge canvas size so I don't want to take that.
Also I want to control arch angle manually.

I want to create a blur effect that starts from one edge of a photo and gets stronger (more blurred) as it goes away from that point. This specific effect only needs to travel in one direction, so it doesn't need to be circular.
I don't want to use the method of creating a second copy of the photo on a separate layer, blurring it, and using a gradient on a layer mask, because this doesn't achieve the effect I'm looking for, since you can still see some of the non-blurred image under the blurred one.

Using PS CS4 on XP. I just got a job back from the printer company & I am noticing some lines that didn't appear on my print out here (on xerox color printer machine) to compare. I didn't really catch them on the proof either, but they used an epson proof and we printed on 100# gloss text stock for the final.
What I have going on is a gradient background (using shape layer and gradient layer style effect) from a white to a light tan. Top to bottom on a regular Letter size sheet. In the upper right hand corner I have a image of a face that had that same light tan in the background. I faded this image into the gradient background by using gaussian blur.
This is not very noticable in the file, but I can tell that it is there...you have to really focus your eyes to see it, but it's there, a line going around the image where the gaussian blur is. I'll attach a photo of the edge. I guess what I'm saying is it is not smooth - the image edges being blurred into the gradient background, but printed off a regular printer, it looks smooth. Is there anything I can do to prevent this in the future?

I am wondering why the gradients that paint.net generate look so dull, and i've experimented with creating the gradient by just filling two colors and then applying gaussian blur. Is there a reason why the gradient looks dull? and is there already a tool for creating a gradient like a gaussian blur provides?
it looks like the gradient tool creates a lot of "in between" color, in my example gray. I've attached an example. The gradient is on the left, gaussian blur on the right.

I have a photo and I would like to blur the bottom of the image while leaving the top of the image sharp, similar to limiting the depth of field by using a large f-stop. I created a gradient mask and then used Filters > Blur but it is not working. If I choose the layer that I created the mask on and choose blur, nothing happens. If I choose the layer (background) under the mask then the whole image blurs.

Whenever I have an object grouped, and double click to edit it, I can't get the gradient control handles to show up inside of it.
How can I get them to show up and why did they disappear in the first place?

I have some random curves (already created) and I want to blur them just from one side to have the same blur distance and effect one the whole curve.
To more precisely describe what I need, I need to create gradient with direction of normal for every "point". The best example I have found so far are borders in Civilization IV game. Here are two examples:
3.bp.blogspot.com/-40x9Kw5vrrA/TiHjTNwOuQI/AAAAAAAAADA/uw2NeAnsmOk/s1600/Civ4ScreenShot0008.JPG
apolyton.net/civ4/files/info-images/agade.png
As you can see, there is a solid curve, which gradually blends (i.e. alpha channel is lowered) till the gradient disappears. I have the solid curve and the question is, what would be the simplest way how to do this (the number of curves is around 100) gradient.

I just got PSE CS6 and the blur too will NOT work ....blur filters work, but not BLUR in the tools panel I have tried: unintstall/reinstall, updating, using it no a picture straight after opening it, duplicate layers, selecting an area and then blurring....flattening an image, every single different setting in the the blur tools menu bar NOTHING works. And everything I find about blur is the new blur filters....

Using AutoCAD 2013 and TOL command to generate feature control frames. We set our lineweights based on layer assignments.
Problem is that when printing, AutoCAD seems to randomly assign a lineweight to the feature control frames. It can vary from what it's supposed to be (such as lineweight set for the dimension layer) or thicker than even what the object lines are set at. Seems to pick a random linewieght at time of printing for these elements (just the boxes, not the symbols/text itself).
Is there a setting we should be defining somewhere to force it to follow the lineweight of the layer that it has been assigned to? Known bug?

Is it possible to create a gradient similar to radial gradient, except that the shape is other than circular? This image would be the starting point, but I would like the white part fading to black to be another shape (say, a rectangle, a banana, etc.).

I've been experiencing problems with the Gradient editor since I got PS and the problem is that whenever I create a gradient through the gradient editor and then load it, it does load it and instead just duplicates the ones that already exist.
I save all gradients at:
C:UsersRHAppDataRoamingAdobeAdobe Photoshop CS6PresetsGradients
However it does (mostly) work when I import pre-made (from web) Gradients.
I don't know why this happens but it also did the same thing when I had CS5.5!

I seem to have lost lens blur. It's no longer in the drop down of Blur in filters. Does this have something to do with smart filters? Perhaps I've unwittingly converted my filters and lost lens blur.

I have Photoshop CS5 and when I run Filter>Surface Blur, it takes about 27 minutes to execute - I would say that is WAY TOO LONG EH!
I have an iMac with 8gb of memory, I have 600gn of free space, 70% of memory (5400nb) allocated to photoshop.
Something is not right - what should I check next?

I am having difficulty with Gaussian Blur. I created a selection outline in an image and then filled it with black. I then selected Gaussian Blurr from the Filter Menu a set the radius to 100 and then deselected my previous selection.
In CS5 the edges faded into the background image however in CS6 the outline of the previous selection was still visible and the Gaussian Blur did not blend the selection as expected. Even ramping the radius up did not solve the issue as the outline still remained visible. how do i resolve this issue in CS6?

I did a search for "surface blur slow" and got nothing... Which tells me I've got something set wrong or there'd be a big discussion with lots of screaming about a function that still isn't usable after three major releases...
Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. I7 - 920 running 3.8 GHz, 12GB of memory.
I remember in CS4 or 5 Surface Blur was essentially unusable, but isn't this the third major release of Photoshop with Surface Blur? Is there some specific set of preferences I need to set so this thing will be usable? I'm editing C300 images, so those are small at 12 megapixels (certainly compared to a D800) and it takes MINUTES do do anything. It can't STILL be this slow so I figure there's GOTTA be something I need to set differently... What's goin on?

I have used the motion blur filter, but it just does not look photographic. Does anyone know of any other 3rd party filters or techniques to make to the motion blur look more realistic. I know you can mask and erase parts. And, make a copy slightly transparent and offset.
It seems realistic motion blur has more solid highlights from end to end and soft shadows.
Also realistic motion blur only goes in one direction.
I thought someone would have a better motion blur filter with more options with highlight and shadow control. and some random waviness as if not going exactly in one direction

I'm attempting to run a batch process, more or less i have to blur out a certain section of an image for about 360 images... I searched around for a bit and couldn't find the answer on these forums...
The images were all taken on a tripod, so the spot remains in the same spot.
I created a new action set, and i start recording the actions, it records me selecting the blur location, but does not record me actually performing the blur. I then save while still recording.
When i run this process on the image directory all the images (except the first one i edited and saved) remain without the blurred section.
Is there a way to do this, or do i have to blur each image individually?

I understand the basic concept of the motion blur, but what I'd like to do is create a picture where I have a vehicle that pretty much looks normal in front but from the mid-point back... it's a gradual blur that has enough color to make sure the viewer senses it is the car and not the background. I'd like the car to be separate from the background so I can experiment with backgounds blurred or not. I'm almost thinking you'd stretch the back half of the car with a gradual fade. Hope I'm explaining this correctly .
Another effect I'm not sure about is whether it would look good with staged, blurred layers so that the car is in varying levels of transparency but you see the full outline of the car and its like steps with a disolve to almost nothing on the left and in say 20 sequences... the last car on the right is fully rendered and highlighted.

I have taken a group photo of people in a park and I would like to blur the people in the background. I want to use the lens blur so the blurring looks like it was done through the lens.
I also want to avoid the image looking like that the sharp object was pasted on a blurred background especially around the hair on the subjects heads, which is why I am looking for a gradual blur.
