Photoshop :: Alpha Levels Of Pixels In Separate Layer From PNG Image
May 27, 2008
I have a PNG image and like to edit the alpha mask. As there's no separate alpha layer inside the PNG image, but all pixels have a certain alpha value, I'd like to extract that with Photoshop. How can I do that?

I have a 3d render that has some semi transparent areas (shadows on matte objects) I want to get rid off. In AE a can simple adjust the alpha levels and set everything under 25 to be 0 for example.
Â
In PS the entire alpha channel seems to be out of reach.. it's not in the Channels tab? I can add one but PS fills it with an B&W version of my RGB image.. What trick I'm a missing here?

I am using Creative Suite 5.5 on my MacBook Pro...and today had issues demonstrating the simple process of dragging one person/image onto another, applying a quick mask to do some simple morphing.
Â
But...one, I couldn't drag the image from the internet and drop onto the project, but had to go to Edit and copy, then create a new file and hit paste. Placing one image side by side to another...I was not able to drag the image of one person to drop onto the other. I either had to use the marquee tool, drag around the image, copy and paste or...found I could drag the image from its layer in the layer's palette and drop onto the project.
Â
More frustrating was that once I had both images in the same project, I was not able to move the new person/image added to locate in right position over the background person/image. I would drag it to that new location, and it would snap back to the original location. Obviously the need to take any image added and move it around to orchestrate your image is important.
Â
I have asked a number of artist friends, checked the mode (both images are RGB) and both images at 8 bits...
Â
I presume it is a simple command that will release the image to stay where located using the Move tool...but am not familiar enough with Suite 5.5 obviously.

way to automate the process of adding my company name and most important file name to the image. What I want to do is, before sending a preview to the client, to put my company logo and name of the file directly on the image, let's say in the right and left lower corner of the image. My clients usually want to print the images and have the file name right in front of them so that after they choose the image they can tell me which of the versions/files they like, without going back to computer and looking for the file name there.

My task is to do a batch processing over an folder with images. I want to add an alpha layer to every image (png). The alpha layer is from a static second image (bmp).
I can accomplish the task in the GIMP front end manually, but the exactly same steps in my script aren't working.
Here's the script:
(define (script-fu-batch-alpha-add globalpha globpics) (let* ((filelist (cadr (file-glob globpics 1))) (filealpha (car(cadr (file-glob globalpha 1)))) (imgalpha (car (gimp-file-load RUN-NONINTERACTIVE
filealpha filealpha))) (drawablealpha (car (gimp-image-get-active-layer imgalpha)))

I have an image I want to edit. It is a png tileset for a game, with opaque icons with semi-transparent background (yep the result in game is just as annoying as it sounds).
I'm not satisfied with background and want to make it more transparent (or maybe completely transparent). How do I do that?
There are adjustment tools in PDN that can modify separate channels; AFAIK alpha is technically identical to color channels but these tools only let me edit RGB.
how to specify a layer as alpha mask either.

I have a few images that I have saved from online that have an alpha layer in them. When I open them in GIMP, the checkerboard pattern makes it far too difficult to edit the image. When I try any of the obvious options for removing the alpha layer, the result looks awful.
How do I remove an alpha layer without changing the way that an image looks when it's viewed in an image viewer (or GIMP)?

any difference between alpha layer and alpha channel? I mean has to be right? I just don't know what exactly that would be if there is. I'm trying to figure out some more stable uses for computer graphics when building textures with alpha layer or alpha channels. So far I get a flicker from opengl bug when using alphas. So I'm wondering if I use Alpha layer and something with a solid color underneath the geometry if I could achieve a more stable result where alpha sorting. Possibly clearing it up where my alpha layered geometry stays on top vs bleeding through at times it seems.

I have several layers in an image, and I need to align them precisely. The ordinary layer shift ("move pixels") by multiples of pixels is not sufficient. Is there a tool or plugin for PDN that allows sub-pixel shifts (i.e. moves by fractions of pixel)? And rotations by very small angles?

I had a .JPEG of a leaf photographed against a white background. When I went to turn that white background into a transparent alpha channel, it seemed to work okay....except for the fact that when I then went to select the new alpha channel via the Fuzzy Select Tool, it wasn't selecting all these newly transparent pixels.

1.I am working on a project where I need to set all pixels below a level as alpha channel, is there a quick way to achieve this? The level can be both set a prior or adjusted dynamically, the second way is preferred. Right now my workflow includes:1. duplicate layer.
2. use color level in duplicate layer, in menu COLOR -> LEVEL.
3. add alpha mask to original layer
4. copy duplicate layer into the alpha mask of the original.
5. delete duplicate layer.
6. If result is not ok then return to 1.As you can see this workflow is a headache, specially point 6 which is often achieved.

Whenever I try to use the 'Colour to Alpha' tool, while it works on most of the image, I always get little white dots left behind, and have to spend ages use the eraser tool to get rid of them.

GIMP 2.8.4 Windows 7 64-bit
Using the native GIMP rotate function to rotate a rectangular image about its center (for instance) the corners of the image which are exposed by the rotation are set to RGB 0x000000 with an alpha value of 0.so that these areas are transparent.
If the same operation is performed as a GEGL operation the corners have RGB values of 0x000000 but alpha values of 255 - i.e. they are solid black.
Is there a setting to cause GEGL to use alpha values of 0 for these pixels? This also applies to GEGL operations such as shear.

I have created a short (<3 seconds) video comprised of 2 layers. Each layer was filmed as a green screen, and I used Keylight in After Effects CC to create a transparent background. My ultimate objective is to use the clip to create a transition for use in ProShow Producer, as described in the link [URL]..... To do this, I need the main video file, and a second file containing only the alpha channel.
Â
I have used Adobe Media Encoder to output a FLV, and told it to Encode Alpha Channel, as was suggested, but I only get the one file (the main video). How do I get the alpha file?
Â
I am using AE CC.

(CS3) I have a raster layer that has some semi-transparent pixels.
I'd like to make the layer itself fully opaque, and move the contents of its alpha channel into a layer mask.
(If possible, merging the alpha channel with what I have already placed into the layer mask.)

I'm adjusting a photographic image and am using both a filter effect and a layer style in the same layer on a Smart Object. I want to separate the two effects into two layers, so one layer has the filter effect (Nik) and one layer has the layer style (Color Overlay) (with the goal of merging/rasterizing the Nik filter effect with the Smart Object but keeping the layer style unmerged). I can make two layers and move one effect without problem, but the visual result of each effect on a separate layer is quite different from having both effects in the same layer.  The Blend Mode for all my layers is Normal. Within the Color Overlay panel, the blend mode is Linear Burn.

Layer 1: a layer style and a filter effect, stacked

looks very different from....

Layer 2:Â a layer style
Layer 1:Â a filter effect

I could have sworn that in previous versions of Photoshop, before version CS4, that if there was a link icon between the layer thumbnail and the layer mask on that same layer, if you move one or the other, they both move. In CS4, how do you move the layer pixels and the layer mask at the same time so that they stay lined up?

Â
To reproduce bug create any new file. Create levels layer with any mask. Activate "mask viewing" by pressing Option/Alt and clicking to mask icon on the levels layer in layers panel. Then try to call menu->select->color range.

I'm having trouble adjusting the levels on a layer after I've previously added noise to it. Basically I'm trying to add a simple snowstorm effect to a painting I'm currently working on.
Â
The way I normally do is: create a new layer, then fill it with solid black, after that I go to filters>noise>add noise, then I add about 150% noise and check monochromatic, press ok, after that I go to image>adjustments>levels and adjust it so it leaves only a few white spots and then I press ok, but this time nothing happens after I press ok in the levels window and the image stays the same.

I am using a CS6 trial on Windows 7, I can get more specs later but I can't remember anything else about my operating system (on a different computer at the moment).
Â
I have noticed sometimes that when using a Levels adjustment layer, the drop-down to choose the different channels (red, green, blue) is grayed out, and I cannot click on it to choose the different colors. The numbers in the input & output boxes are also grayed out and I cannot type in them. The only time I have noticed this happening is directly after cropping an image. And then when I go to work on a different image and add an levels adjustment layer to it, those things are still grayed out. I have to restart the program to get it to work properly again. If I add a Curves layer, nothing is grayed out, everything works fine; it's just Levels.

I cannot get a color balance adjustment layer to come up. Every time I do photoshop creates a levels layer. Selecting levels makes a levels layer. All of the other adjustment layers seem to be working normally.
How do I fix this? I have a deadline and no time to be reinstalling photoshop.

The issue:When I ctrl+alt+right-click to select a layer, I can click the actual layer, or about 6 to 10 pixels below the layer. This latter option (the 10 pixel margin thing) is rather annoying when there's a layer below it, that happens to stick out 10 pixels underneath that layer.
Â
It basically requires me to set the higher layer to invisible, and then rightclick again. There's a slight difference between pixel layers and vector layers, as vector layers seem to have a bigger "hitbox" than pixel ones.
Â
The most annoying instances are layers with, for example, a one pixel line. You pretty much have to *guess* where to click, as everything is so close to eachother.I work in webdesign, and am working with pixel-perfect designs all the time, so this is something I deal with on a daily (read: every few minutes) basis.
 Â
My version of Photoshop
- CS6, update it frequently on my home PC & Work PC
Â
It's worth mentioning that I didn't have this issue before CS6, and have been using PS for about a decade, +- 30 to 50 hours a week!
Â
Before you claim it's the computer, the systems I've noticed this on:
- My home PC (16gb ram, couple SSD's for scratch disks, GTX670, core7 etc)
- My work PC (16gb ram, no scratch disks or fancy gfx card, core7 as well)
- Girlfriend's MacBook pro
- Her Mountain Lion running desktop (custom build, hackintosh)
+ several other PC's at work (programmers running wildly different systems and OSes)
Â
We have several Adobe subscriptions; I have one, my girlfriend has one and at work we have about 3 or 4.So, it's probably not the computers.

Can somebody tell me the method of separating a shadow from a layer where you added that shadow ?
I haven't use this technique in years, but wanted to try this, and now cannot seem to do it. I remember way back, there was a simple command to accomplish this, and it seems to no longer exist.

Is there any way to record a Photoshop maneuver like airbrushing onto an otherwise transparent layer so the end result is an animation? The real world equivalent of what I'm trying to do would be to have a video camera behind glass and a spray can spraying the glass from the other side.
Â
I know there are programs that record what's on screen but I don't think they allow you to have a transparent layer. I may be able to use one of those programs and key out the non airbrush background. I'd like to be able to import the animation into Premiere so it looks like paint has been sprayed over whatever clip is underneath the airbrushing frames.
