Photoshop :: Unable To Reset Preferences Or Done Any Actions Or Disk Clean Up Operations
Feb 29, 2012
Every so often I notice that my preferences have been reset. Can't pin down a frequency, but you say every 4-6 months this happens.Documents open in tab form, my scratch drive is now C, and the checked options of S and O drive is gone.
Â
I have not reset the preferences or done any actions or disk clean up operations.Using current version of McAfee Security Center and it does run scans automatically. But it does this frequently so the 4-6 mo. of reset makes this unlikely.
Â
Windows 7 OS and PS 12.0.4.Have noticed this same occurrence for years even with CS3.
Adjustments I make to images will not stick. I read that this might be because I need to rest my preferences. I can only find a lesson for how to do this for Windows 7 or XP. I have Windows 8 and the directions do not apply as the path does not lead to the folders I need.
How do I reset Photoshop 10 Peferences? I read that may correct my Group Shot problem. However, when starting PSE and I press Ctrl+Shift+Alt I do not receive the questiion about resetting my preferences.
After every point update, some of Photoshop's preferences get reset (interface colour is the most noticeable). This also happens with point updates to Illustrator and InDesign. Â Running OSX Mountain Lion with latest updates to OS and Creative Cloud.
Firstly, I cant get the reset preferences window to appear, as isntructed, by holding ctrl/alt/shift down and opening the application - I just get the details of the shortcut. tried on the actual.exe file and still dont get the window as described.
secondly, the hand tool does not seem to work? I select it, the 4 options appear in the tool bar above and the little hand Icon, but clicking and dragging on the file in the open window, has no effect, I cant move the file around the window as I supposed to be able to do.
I am on OSX10.6.8 with CS4 and CS5 (some of my actions only run on CS4, so I quit and launch back and forth). Â I had my CS 4 and 5 Scratch Prefs set to a specific scratch partition on another local disk where I had a small partition dedicated towards it. I was doing some disk maintenance on that other disk and forget to go into CS and reset the scratch to the start-up disk. Now I cannot open CS4 or CS5 because it is looking for a scratch disk that does not exist. Â Is a complete re-install the only fix, or is there a command line or other way other way than a complete re-install?
Tools and preferences reset to default every time I quit Illustrator (cs6)? I spend so much time setting up my tool pallet "just so" but every time I have to close down and re-open they just resent to default . . . same is happening in photoshop??
Photoshop CS6 has been working like a dream, and recently it has pushed some very large files.  But, upon trying to open Photoshop this morning, I get these two messages: Could not load actions because an unexpected end-of-file was encountered.Could not initialize Photoshop because the Preferences file was invalid (it has been deleted).         - although the file was still in the AppData...Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings.   Tried to 'restore' Preferences:  Keyboard - CTRL ALT SHFT upon clicking PSD iconSaid 'Yes' to allow changes to systemStill received same two messagesRemoved the Adobe Photoshop CS6 Prefs.psp Restarted Photoshop, still received same two messages.  Tried resetting, CTL ALT SHFT, again still same two messages.   Read Adobe thread to 'rename' the Actions Palette.psp, but keep it in the folder:  I renamed it 'renamed' and left the Adobe Photoshop CS6 Prefs.psp in the folder as well.Did not receive the 'load actions' error, butStill received the 'Preference file was invalid' message.Tried CTRL ALT SHFT to reset,Still received the 'Preference file was invalid' message.Left the Actions as 'renamed', but removed the Adobe Photoshop CS6 Prefs.psp file as well.Still received the 'Preference file was invalid' message.Tried CTRL ALT SHFT to reset,Still received the 'Preference file was invalid' message.Â
I Can't run batch actions. I'm trying to run batch actions from the file browser in CS and it say it can't because the "Disk is not available". I made sure my scratch disc was designated, and it has my primary partition as the 1st and the other partion is the 2nd. The files I'm working from are on the same partition as the System files and there is 15gb available.
My Vista system has developed a few bugs which are not cured by Norton 360.Dragging a window causes it to maximize in a few programs PASTE does not work in some programs -- including X4..The CROP tool stopped working in X4 but is OK in X5 High-lighting is erratic in WORD etc.
I can only run a "clean" install from my OEM disk which means reloading all applications. I was wondering if I should give up and install Windows 7.
What has been your experience with Windows 7/ Did you do a "clean" install or just the update.
I have been working with autocad for approximately five months. I feel as though I have a pretty good grasp of the program's capabilities and commands, but I'm stumped. I've successfully imported a 3dm file to autocad 2012 and all of the geometry is present in autocad (it is not a 2d wireframe), but I am unable to perform boolean operations on it.Â
The model has also taken on a strange pale blue hugh, though the wirefram is lavender (unless I explode it and then unionize it several times over. Unfortunately this results in an issue with surface faces intersecting with one another, as well as a loss of geometry). The model cannot be converted to a surface nor a solid which means that it is not water-tight. This is not a model that I have created. I've been tasked by my employer to make several changes to it. Why (without exploding it) I cannot perform boolean operations.
Like everyone, I have certain settings I change in Photoshop which I'd like to maintain regardless of whether I have closed Photoshop, turned off my computer, etc. For example, some settings for saving files in indexed color like turning off the "forced" option, or choosing "never" under "Maximize PSD and PSB compatibility under File Handling. Code:
I have posted an image which is a screen snap of a revit session. Not sure how it got this way but we are unable to figure out how to reset it without restarting the program.
I am unable to reset the inside margins on an existing document. Editing "Document Preset" for inside margin has no effect on the document - I can change the numbers to any value with no effect on the document. Changing gutter has no effect. I have tried setting margins in the master pages, also no effect. I can change margins by right click on an existing text frame (text frame options), but this only allows setting left or right frame margins for the whole document.
Does the trial/evaluation version of VideoStudio Pro X3 - DVD factory Pro 2010 support creating Blu ray disks. Or is this only possible with the full/bought version?
I downloaded the trial version of VideoStudio Pro X3 which includes DVD factory Pro 2010 version 1.6.0.367 (dutch language version). With DVD factory starting a new videodisk I cannot select blu ray disk in the project settings. I can only select as disk: DVD and as project setting: Dvd-video or AVCHD.
I searched but could not find any resolution. I do like the editing software so very happy so far but before I buy the software, I want to make sure I can create blu ray disks (do a test).
Note: I do have two drives, first drive is Blu-ray burner (LG HL-DT-ST BD-RE BH08LS20) and second drive is normal DVD burner (TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S223C)
I've started getting this error when attempting to open QT wrapped DVCPro HD in Premiere Pro CC (7.2.1) windows OS. Â I have the latest version of QT installed and I can open and play the files successfully on the same machine in QT. The files are located on a network share but I have tried copying them locally and I get the same issue. Â I've tried removing, reinstalling, updating QT, rebooting the machine, holding down shift when launching Premiere but none of these things have made a difference. Â I can open the same files on a different machine using the same version of Premiere (without QT installed - different OS though, Windows 8) and up until fairly recently, I could open these files on the machine where it's not working too. Â The really strange thing (as far as I am concerned at least) is that I can open up the project in AME and render it out to DVCPro HD on the same machine, without a problem but for some reason Premiere doesn't want to handle the files properly.
I've been using Gimp 2.6 for some months now and beginning to get to grips with it. I load photos into Picasa and then process jpegs with Gimp. Upgraded to 2.8.0 a few days ago and hit a problem.
Using the new 2.8 system to to 'export' out to a jpeg file, when I go back to Picasa and make any change at all, which then needs a 'save' I get a Windows error message: "Unable to save all files due to a disk error. The disk may be full or read only".Files not Gimp 2.8 processed are fine.
2.6 no problem - 2.8 problem. I don't think it will be Gimp bug, but there is an associated change which has 'upset' my computer.
Working Win 7 Professional (64bit), Lightroom 4  I am finding that while reviewing / rating my pics lightroom will often lose a pic (pics located within a folder on the desktop - move them to a nas drive later as faster to work from hard drive than accross the newtork when importing and exporting and creating previews etc). I will have a pic on my screen and then use the numeric keypad to rate the pic or the arrow keys to progress to the next pic and then out of the blue lightroom announces that the pic is missing. I look at the hard disk and find that there is now a .swp and .tmp file left in the directory where the pic was. eg below  I can then either rename the tmp file back to a jpg and all is OK but I have just started dragging another copy of the image from the card again. This is not just a lightroom 4 issue I used to have it in Lightroom 3. Its got to the stage where I am now keeping a copy of all images while I do my initial shortlist just incase I lose something which frustrates me somewhat.
On start-up of Designer7 I now get the error message "Unable to store information on your local hard disk. The disk may be full, or read-only. Ok" as pretty well the last thing in the start-up process. On pressing Ok, the dialog clears and the program will run normally. Opening and saving files works just fine.
My discs (where the program is stored, where my user profile is stored, where the drawings are saved and when the temp files and Windows swap file arel orated ) have ample space and are not RO. I also ran a disc check and they're not corrupted or damaged.
No malware seems to be present (checked with a couple of different programs) but the only thing that's different is that we had a power cut while Xara was running. Since then, it keeps giving me this message.
I've just updated to the latest version and accepted the default settings and it still gives me the message.
i'm in action schematic and if i reset any node (for example images/surface) then some parameter is still not affected. For example : the blend type and surface type and couple more are not affected by that reset function. Is this a bug ?
Windows 7, had everything working fine. Added SSD and installed system from scratch on SSD. Old drive is now my second drive. Â Trying to put the scratch disk on the second (old) drive to reduce wear on the SSD. But every time I do, I get the disk error message and it erases all my settings (so annoying!) Â I figure it's a permissions thing since I've had to deal with that already to some degree, but I don't know how to fix it since I don't know where adobe is trying to save the scratch file.
I downloaded a couple of actions from the web to my actions palette and they worked fine, but then I got greedy and downloaded a few more and that’s when things went south. Now none of the actions work - by not working I mean when I mouse over the Play Selection icon at the bottom of the action palette I get that little circle with a line through it. This happens with the PS default actions as well (I also get the circle on the Stop Playing/Recording and Begin Recording icons).
Somewhere in the following is probably what messed things up.
I downloaded actions to my computer in zip files. Copied them over to the actions folder (or somewhere) and unzipped them. I went back to the actions palette and hit “load actions” and loaded them. On the second set of actions that I downloaded I remember thinking “why am I copying and pasting these files - I bet I should cut and paste them, so I did and that may have been the start of the great crumble of 2004. PhotoShop help says: (under Saving and loading actions) “Actions are automatically saved the the Actions Palette folder in PS7.0 Settings folder. If this file is lost or removed, the actions you created are lost”.
I have searched for the settings folder and couldn’t find it, but the actions still show up on the actions palette - they just don’t run.
I’m a little fuzzy on the details on the above steps. In fact, I probably did something different on each download.
one more thing, I reloaded PhotoShop, but still nothing.
I haven't had Photoshop Extended before CS6, so I've been experimenting with doing some simple 3D stuff, such as turning text into 3D shapes and trying to match it to a photographic background.  What I'm doing seems quite simple, and it seems to be working, but there's one glitch: A few things seem to take a really long time. At worst, Photoshop goes completely unresponsive for about 40 seconds.  A good example is this: I have a photo I've opened in RGB/16 mode at 4096 x 6144 pixels, and I create a new Text layer over the photo with one word in it: STOP  I click the 3D button in the Options area for the Text Tool, and wait a full 40+ seconds before seeing the pop-up that asks whether I want to switch to the 3D workspace.  I assume a 40 second delay isn't normal. It's certainly not acceptable.  Once in the 3D editing realm, I can do most things with relative ease, such as moving the 3D mesh around, rotating it, changing lighting, etc. The update time for any of those operations to show is maybe 1/2 second or so to show on the screen. Some things are a little faster. Even rendering it into a pretty clean state is fairly quick - just 10 seconds or so.  I've tested this in both Photoshop CS6 32 bit and 64 bit, and the performance seems about the same, as does the appearance of the long delay.  Other observations:  I also see the long delay if I click on a history step to go back or forward in the history. If I work on an 8 bits/channel image the 40 seconds is reduced to about 2 seconds. I have a decent 8 core machine, with (by today's standards) a modest graphics card: ATI Radeon HD 5670 with 1 GB DDR5. I'm on the ATI Catalyst 12.2 drivers because the 12.4 (latest) set has other problems. But when I did try the 3D stuff with 12.4 the delay was the same.  Example: Going from this screen to the one below takes 40 seconds.  ...40 seconds later...  Ultimately tweaking it to look decent seems doable - no crashes or glitches...  Not knowing what to expect, or what I should expect to not try to do, what I'm doing seems pretty simple. Am I trying something I shouldn't? Is it just a given that to do 3D one is supposed to work on 8 bits/channel data?
I have a large image (21.6 x 14.4in, 51.3MB, and 240ppi) that I need to reduce to approx. 7 x 5in, under 30MB, and 300ppi. First, I resampled the image down to 7 x 4.667in, 5.38MB, and 240ppi. Later, after I realized that I forgot to change the resolution, I resampled the image up by changing the resolution to 300ppi. I was left with a final image that had the following characteristics: 7 x 4.667in / 8.41MB / 300ppi. Since the file size is larger, I'm assuming that Photoshop did a bit of guesswork in order to add information back into the file.  If I would have changed the resolution from 240ppi to 300ppi at the same time that I resampled the image down to 7 x 4.667in, would I have gotten a better image? In other words, should I have done all of the adjustments at the same time?Â
My computer crashed and I removed all apps and reinstalled so now none of my actions appear. However I do have a backup file of all of them and want to reinstall but before when I was using cs6 ( Im assuming same thing as CC as it was all on the subscription plan ) I would click actions then the right arrows and it would bring me a big screen of all the actions ( even the ones that were just preloaded in ps ) and it was a big box with all the actions and some options to record etc...Now that box isn't there and it's just a single column drop down menu.
Is there a way to customize menus or add buttons to the control bar to make repetitive operations single step. Thinking specifically of adding an import button somewhere (similar to PS Elements 2) in which the current scanning settings are stored. Presently it takes about 6 steps through the menu to accomplish this.Â
