Photoshop :: Printing/Exporting Metadata
Dec 30, 2008
I want to print or export the metadata from Photoshop or Bridge for collections of photographs to create a hardcopy of the data to store with the printed images. This is for an archives where we print all digital images received, but do not currently have an easy way of transferring the metadata.

I am in the process of updating metadata in Photoshop CS4 using Bridge. I would like to print the metadata, and particularly the "description" portion.Â
Â
Is there a way to print metadata entries from Photoshop CS4 using Bridge?

At one time I was able to export a file's original file name in the "Raw Data" area of the metadata. I seem to have lost that ability in LR 4. I find this useful when a client renames a file and then wants me to find the original. I would open the file in Photoshop (or even a word processor) and the original name would be in the Raw Data area in File Info.
Â
When LR 4 imports the file the first time, it apparently still creates the xmp file with the file name at the end of <rdf:Description rdf:about="" field and it looks like: crs:RawFileName="_DSC6501.NEF">
Â
At one time Lightroom exported that info. But now I seem to have lost that file name info, even with "Export All Metadata" selected.
Â
This is how it would look in Photoshop's File Info:
<rdf:Description rdf:about=""
xmlns:crs="http://ns.adobe.com/camera-raw-settings/1.0/">
<crs:RawFileName>DSC_8466.NEF</crs:RawFileName>
[Code]....

If I apply copyright metadata to a client's purchased images will this in any way affect their ability to get the files printed (pro-lab or with public-lab) or print them themselves?

Working in LR 3.6, if I export files with "minimize metadata" checked, I loose the tags. The only way they stay in the exported JPG is if I enable that check. But I don't necessarily want all my EXIF data available to everybody.
Â
Is this problem resolved in 4.1?

I'm attempting to print a picture for a present and I can't get file printed like Corel X6 displays it. I'm using a Deskjet printer. What are the correct settings for a quality printing?

I'm new to Maya and the 3D design environment. I'm going thru the online tutorials and built the sample Greek temple. I have a MakerBot replicator 2. I did convert the Nurbs to polygons for the column bases and the temple roof. I exported the individual pieces to obj format to print. My question involves the export of the roof/torus group. The "roof" is not smooth but slightly faceted (I'm not using the correct jargon here I'm sure). It's kind of tortoise shell like in smoothness. What do I adjust during export so the rood object comes over smoother?
Â
I'd attach the roof file but the site doesnt allow for some reason.

I have 100's of images a friend wants me to give them so they can print them.. I don't know what size, some will be 6 x 4 and some might be 8 x 10's
Imported and converted to DNG into LR I image has dimension size of 3264 x 4912 or 4912 x 3264. Some have been cropped.
When exporting them all as a batch, I am confused as to a general settings to use
I am thinking Jpeg Quality 80? Not checking re size to fit and DPI 300.
I have been experimenting and the file sizes exported vary hugely from 456k to 4.29mb for 1 image

I am trying to get my first 3d print of a model and am having problems getting it into a format that the printing service can use. I've read up and attempted stlout, 3dprint, and export commands to no avail. I get the message that the objects need to be 3dsolids or watertight meshes.
After reading all the hype on 3d printing and being very excited about it, I"ve got to say that I'm a bit overwhelmed with the steps it appears one has to take to get an architectural model to print.
The model is made with aca 2012.

I'm using LR4.1 on OSX 10.6.8. I convert my NEFs to DNGs at import, do my edits in LR. Most of the time when I want to create output it's for screen use. I use "Export" and produce JPGs.
Â
But when I'm preparing files for printing at the lab, I use the Print module, and Print to File, because I like to create a JPG where the image size is smaller than the paper size, for framing purposes. For example, I use the Print module to output a JPG where the "cell size" is 11x14 but the "custom file dimensions" are 12x18, then I have the lab use 12x18 paper, leaving me a white border on my print that makes it easier to mat and frame.
Â
Two questions, really.
Â
1. Does LR do anything differently as it creates a JPG, depending on whether you use Export or "Print to File"? I'm assuming not, but just wondering.
Â
2. Is there a way to do what I want to do -- create a JPG where the picture is one size but the paper size is larger -- through the Export dialogue (like ideally, through an export preset) or do I indeed have to go through the Print module to do this?
Â
No emergency here, my method is working for me. (Though using an export preset to do what I'm doing, rather than having to go through the Print module, would be a little quicker, I suppose.)

exporting my CorelDrawX6 files as a high quality jpg for large scale printing purposes. In X4 it was very easy - just export as usual to the highest quality cmyk jpg and open in Photo Paint... now when I export this way it takes forever to bring up the preview page and most of the time it ends up being blank. Sometimes even crashes. I have played with all options in the filter dialog menu that I can find but nothing works. Thought it might be a file size problem but never had that problem in X4 and anything under 200dpi will not be high enough quality.

How do I convert the colour profile of a Lightroom custom printing package from Adobe Prophoto to sRGB before printing? For that matter, how do I save the thing? I have no interest in saving the template, or the collection separately, since neither has any use without the other. And without saving them as one finished item, I have no way to convert the colour profile of that item. I can see clearly from the appearance of the print preview that the above mentioned colour profile conversion is required.

Is there a way I can set PS to autosave some preset metadata every time I create a new drawing or update some photo or photoart? I want it so save into the file somewhere, my name as the creator. I am trying to do this will all my programs that allow me to save a file that I create. This way if I ever need to back up all my personal files again I can search for all files that have me as the Creator or Author and back them up all at once. My intention is always to set up folders such as My Photos, My Art, My Word Docs, My Excel, etc... and save every media I create in these and I can never seem to keep up with this and my files end up everywhere. The my Hard Drive fills up or I want to clean my PC and finding all my files is a challenge and time consuming.

I completely lost trace of an image I'm using on a Photoshop document. I'm using only a portion of the full image and I need the rest of it for another panel...
It was downloaded from the Web, I've already tried the google reverse image search without any results (it's now cropped/resized/renamed) and i carefully went through my Firefox history... somehow, it just disappeared! Is there a way to use photoshop (or maybe Bridge?) to find the data related to my source image (just the name would do it).

I have read that adding keywords to the metadata helps you find a photo you are looking for from a large library of images. My questions is...
can you add keywords to you photos to help search spiders to find them and display them on search results?

I'm wondering if there is a way to add metadata to an image (particularly JPEGs) without involving a re-save of the image itself. Obviously not a problem with TIFF but not great if every time you want to add more keywords your JPEG gets re-saved.

CS4 Photoshop and Bridge no longer (apparently) allow me to cut and paste data in metadata fields (e.g., IPTC). Never had this problem in C3 and earlier. Is there an update (I hope) that fixes this problem?

- I open a .jpg file in PS CS5,
- I change one or several metadata, using the XMP embedded panel (File -> Information)
- I apply the changes,
- I close the file.
Â
At this moment, PS ask me if I want to save the changes. Again... A little bit curious, because I already did it, but... I agree. Then, PS ask me now to choice the jpg quality (you know, the scale from 1 to 12). But changing metadata never affect the image itself... So, it should be useless to do that (of course, I made no modification on the picture itself).
Â
I must say that (if I remember well) sometimes I was able to close the file directly.

I just updated to Photoshop CS6 from CS5.1 and trying to iron out a few issues. In Bridge CS 6 my Metadata Panel items are truncated for some reason. There is plenty of room in the panel width, so...? I have even pulled the width out further than shown below. There are no problems with the other panels.
Â
Below are pics of the same panel in my install of CS 6 and then the same panel in my installation of CS 5.1.Â

Where are the MetaData Templates located in PS C6 on a Mac that you can add your contact and copyright information to?
Â
On a Windows machine they are located in Owner/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/XMP. I have some templates that I want to copy from a Windows laptop over to a Macbook Pro.

I'm using Photoshop CS6 with Bridge.
Working a lot with documentary images, the Description metadata field is crucial for saving valuable info pertaining to the images, often quite a lot of text. Bridge is useful -- but not as useful as I'd need.
Very often I want to append to the Description for a group of images, and that works nice -- but ONLY if that field is empty in all the fields.
Â
And that is typically not the case. I keep coming back with more info to add, but often not to the same selection of images. Thus if I try selecting them I get "(Multiple values)" in the field.
And if I type something in it REPLACES all the various existing content in the image files -- very bad loss of important data results.
Â
Thus, what I'd need is a way to APPEND text to the Description field contents for a selection of images.
Is there some way in Bridge that I have overlooked? Or is there any plugin or auxiliary program that could be used for this?

I need to add into the metadata, a drop down option where classification/privacy markings can be selected. This needs to be visible for search options as well as being available for batch process........

I'm saving for web and want to preserve all metadata except camera info, but besides the camera info, it's not saving the description either. Is it right?
Actually, I only want to save copyright information, author, keywords and description, but there's not such option.

I would like to know how to remove metadata from my images.
Â
Trying to make sure my cllients do not have access to my shooting details. IE: shutter speed, F stop etc.
Â
I do not want to remove metadata individually as I have 100's of images to work with.
Â
Is there a one click method to doing this or a way to do it through batch process?
Â
It was mentioned on this forum that there's a 3rd party software but it's hard to believe that this cant be easily done in Photoshop.
Â
I'm running CS 4.

In Photoshop CS6, when you save an open file to .psd, .tif, or .jpg, whatever metadata it contains is saved with the file, and you can examine it in Bridge. But when you save to .png, the metadata panel in Bridge is empty — there’s nothing there..Is this a bug or a feature?
