Lightroom :: Difference Between Copy Metadata And Synchronize Metadata
Mar 23, 2012As far as I can tell, Copy Metadata and Synchonize Metadata do the same thing. Is there a difference in what they do?

View 1 RepliesWhat's the difference and purpose of Keywording and metadata such as title and caption, crator, sublocation , label etc? Where & how is the information used? Where does it appear?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using Geosetter to add GPS coordinates to my photos, it also happens that I add keywords to photos directly from Windows Explorer (it's the fastest way in some cases).
The problem with doing that is : PSE8 does not "see" the update. Any other way than removing the containing directory from catalog's scope and readdint it ?
I can not get copy metadata to work in LR4 or 4.1. When I click on copy metadata, with a picture selected that has metadata, a window opens with the metadata form. None of the check boxes has any metadata in them from the picture I selected. If I fill in some of the boxes and then paste to another picture, that works. The same thing happens with sync. It appears that the metadata from the selected picture is not read when clicking on copy metadata.. I am running LR4.1 under Win 7 on a PC.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just completed the import of a large number of images into LR 4.1. The images all have GPS data and it was processed correctly. For many of the images, LR also correctly processed the 'sublocation' fields in the map module.
For example, LR completed the city, etc. as Oban, Scotland, United Kingdom. However, none of this information appears in the metadata - either within LR or reading the ITPC data after export as a jpg file. Only the GPS coordinates are retained.
If I am understanding the process and reading the data correctly, how would one use the location data that LR provides?
Is there a way to copy 'sublocation' to fields in the ITPC for the image? Could it be copied to the caption field?
If there is no way to record the location data, why would Adobe add it to LR?
Environment: Lightroom 4.1, Windows 7, JPG and RAW images
We often work remotely on a laptop, then come back to the studio and transfer images from a shoot to the main PC for further work. Some adjustments in Lightroom were done to some images in the folder already, as well as rating some of the best images.
It seems the recommended way of copying images from a laptop to the main PC is to use the "Export as Catalog" function with the "Export negative files" option turned on. However, when working with hundreds of files, this process takes a very long time, and also duplicates the images on the same laptop in the export location. This doesn't work well when working with 50GB of files, especially when only a few of them have any Lightroom adjustments anyways.
Is there a way to just copy the entire directory structure over to the main PC (copying files is fairly quick over Gigabit Ethernet), and then export only the metadata for the files (or catalog) over to the main PC so I can keep the adjustments?
In other words, instead of having to do this:
1. Export as Catalog
2. Wait a very long time for the laptop to duplicate all the images and export files
3. Re-import this catalog to my Main catalog
4. Wait a very long time for this to happen
It would be WAY faster to just do this:
1. Copy entire folder structure from laptop to main PC (this is quick)
2. Export metadata from these files only
3. Import metadata to new PC
So here's the problem: I am working for a photo journalist/traveling photographer moving his 8tb database into Lightroom 4.Now, for whatever reason, he wants the ISPC-metadata headline, the title, and the caption to be same for each picture. What I mean by that is not simply giving every picture the same exact name, but rather have a picture with the headline "Machu Pichu during Sunset" also have the title ""Machu Pichu during Sunset" and the caption "Machu Pichu during Sunset". So far I've done copy and paste between those boxes (I usually only have a headline) for every single picture, but as you might imagine, with 8tb, this will drive you absolutely insane. What I'd like is to have is some sort of Metadata preset telling Lightroom to just take the headline and copy and paste it to title and caption. Is there any way that is possible? This would really save me tons of completely redundant work.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI use a variety of programs to edit the xmp data (mostly Lightroom and exiftool right now), so I know the importance of the "Automatically write XMP data to file setting" (ON in my case). After a few days (actually more like a week) of writing xmp data and then reading into (or synching folders in) Lightroom, I found a number of "metadata conflicts" in my catalog. Since these are basically impossible to fix for a large catalog (since there is no way to show the files that have conflicts), I started over and created a new catalog, and imported all 40,000+ images into it.
However, with my new catalog (with presumably no metadata conflicts), the first image that I tried to change the metadata on gave me a metadata conflict (presumably when Lightroom tried to save the xmp data after I changed it). This was a jpg file, so the metadata is being (or not being) written into the file. Reading the metadata from the file into Lightroom did not fix the problem. The Metadata Status field in the Lightroom Metadata panel says "Unknown" and clicking on the word "Unknown" brings up a panel saying "There was an unknown error while writing metadata to this photo. Retry?", and neither retrying the save nor importing the settings from disk resolves the conflict.
I think that the problem is that the jpeg is somehow corrupt, because if I save a copy in Photoshop, I can read and write the metadata in that copy. And, the copy has, I think, the same metadata as the original. (Of course, the image is probably imperceptibly degraded because I re-jpeg'd it).
There is no message in Console (I'm on Mac). (See PS)
I am worried that I have a number of files with this kind of problem, I guess I could "Save Metadata" for all files in my catalog (thus updating the file modified date for all 2 TB of data, and causing a massive backup issue), and then look through my catalog for those elusive exclamation points. But I'd like something better.how the jpeg could have gotten corrupted, but I do have an archived version that I could look at.
I have a new Geotagger Pro 2 GPS (Solmeta) and tried it out yesterday. The GPS coordinants are not in the metadata. I do get the elevation and the direction the photo was taken. I tried Updating & Read Metadata in the menu but I still do not get the info. When viewed the photos in the camera, they had the GPS data.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi must have a preset metadata because all my photos have been imported using the created year as 2011, location as London and keyword as travel.
How do I clear the metadata?
all my photos have a date of 1-1-11 and travel as a keyword.
is there a way to change these as a group instead of individually?
is there a way to find the date the photo was taken?
My metadata presets are not appearing in the library module. Preset None and Edit Presets appear. There are various presets in the Users/Roaming/Appdata/Adobe/Lightroom/4/Metadata Templates folder. the metadata presets have disappered from my images as well?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI want to display the IPTC metadata in Lightroom 4 in the same way as in Bridge CS6 so that it only displays the fields I want to use - is this possible without having to install 3rd party software? I've tried the metadata pop-up menu selections but these either omit items I want to see or include many items which I don't use. I bought Lightroom because it was designed for photographers but I am discovering that there are a number of areas where it is not as flexible as Bridge.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am trying to save the metadata tags I have created, but I am not given the option to do so. I tried CMD + S, but that does not work and when I go to Metadata -> Save Metadata to files is not an available option. I am using Lightroom 4.4 and working with .mov files.

View 12 Replies View RelatedI am transitioning to using RAW files more often. I add metadata, including GPS info, captions etc. Then invariably I need to get JPEGs to someone and have to go through the hassle of exporting the RAW as a JPEG with the metadata.
Is there a way I can get that metadata into the sorta sidecar JPEG file on my Mac without having to go through the export process?
I suppose I could designate the preference that on import the RAW and JPEG were treated as separate files; could I then just copy the metadata in? I haven't really worked with separate JPEG+RAW before. Would it happen automatically if I stacked them? Haven't really explored that.
It just seems that every time I have decided to use the RAW invariably I need the JPEG and if I don't have LR available (say I'm working on someone else's computer but accessing my own files)
If I apply copyright metadata to a client's purchased images will this in any way affect their ability to get the files printed (pro-lab or with public-lab) or print them themselves?

View 1 Replies View RelatedIn a catalog full of DNGs how can I display only files with metadata that has not been written to the files themselves. The goal is to avoid unecessary file updating in terms of backups. I don't want to update files that don't need it, so I guess the other question is does Ctrl+S atcually update selected files if there is no unwritten metadata
View 4 Replies View RelatedIs it possible to import metadata into LR3 that I've created in Bridge CS4? Another thread here said it's possible, but there was no explanation on how to proceed.
View 2 Replies View RelatedIn Lightroom 3, how do I customize the metadata panel, so I can organize the fields however I would like? It is a hassel to have to scroll through all the fields to get to the ones in which I have to import data.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI wonder when, and if, it is necessary to save metadata to the file? I copy RAW images from the camera card to DNG data type. I once accidentally deleted an edited image with unsaved metadata. I discovered the image I re-imported from my recycle bin was the original image without the updates I applied. I assume if I had saved the metadata for the image, the edits would have been brought back. Other than losing edits and other metadata when accidentally deleting an image, is there any other reasons I should save metadata to the file?
In a related question, is the original image without the metadata accessible in any other software except Lightroom if the metadata has been saved to the image file?
I'm using LR 4.3 on a Win 7 64 bit PC. I notice that many of my photo's show "Metadata Status has been changed" but when I try to synchronize the folder(s) the message does not change. However, when I click the icon next to the message it will update that one photo. How can I update ALL photo's so they have the current and correct metadata without going one photo at a time.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWith my dng files, when saving metadata to file (ctrl + S), after a moment the status of the file is become again as if I had not save the metadata. I used an old trick for this bug : saving metadata, then importing metadata from file, then it is durably ok.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am working on adding metadata to my images. Many are works of my own or public domain art pieces. I need to be able to add an artist's name as Lastname, First, but that would result in two metadata bits. Is there a way to add in a comma as part of the tag?
View 4 Replies View Relatedit is possible to import a TSV Metadata file into lightroom? I can't seem to find any option for this. Thinking about moving to Lightroom and the only way I can bring 400,000 captions with me is to hopefully Import. If I can't I'm probably staying put.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am having trouble with my metadata description / caption box when exporting to Photoshop CS6 and saving for web and devices. Once I save for web and view the image in Bridge all the necessary fields are transferred from Lightroom except description / caption field.
Below are the steps I have followed thus far.
> Tick Automatically write changes to XMP in cataloge settings
> Tick the box in the basic info field and caption sub field in Edit Metadata Presets
> (Command, E) Edit a copy with Lightroom Adjustments
> Resize then (Save for Web and Devices) in Photoshop CS6
LR 4.1 latest ver.I post process a CR2 file in Lightroom. I then add text to the Title field.Export as jpg using a pre-defined export preset.
I then notice that I have a typo in the Title field.
Correct the typo / text in the CR2 parent file using Lightroom.
Re-export again (same export preset)... answering yes to overwrite file (and Yes to all metadata).
Surprise ...surprise... the Title data is not updated in the exported file (ie by viewing the metadata in the g or e view.
I delete the jpg
Export again ...yes... same preset export settings.
Metadata on jpg is correct.
So, it looks to me that Lightroom is not updating the metadata when exporting and overwriting an existing image.
Is this normal or a bug.
