Lightroom :: Metadata Status Does Not Change
Feb 18, 2014
With my dng files, when saving metadata to file (ctrl + S), after a moment the status of the file is become again as if I had not save the metadata. I used an old trick for this bug : saving metadata, then importing metadata from file, then it is durably ok.

LR 4.1 in Windows 7 64.
I have setup smart collection to show all images that need to be saved to disk - "Metadata status has been changed". I did the update in smart collection and also in Library folder. On the disk xmp-file seems to be changed but in LR Metadata status is still "Has been changed". The files are CR2-files.After command status was one second "Up to date" but changed very soon "Has been changed". Metada Date was changed OK. Same happend with tif-files but not with jpg-files. All changes are in the sidecar file.

I'm using LR 4.3 on a Win 7 64 bit PC. I notice that many of my photo's show "Metadata Status has been changed" but when I try to synchronize the folder(s) the message does not change. However, when I click the icon next to the message it will update that one photo. How can I update ALL photo's so they have the current and correct metadata without going one photo at a time.

I set up a smart collection with the setting of Metadata Status Is Conflict Detected and for some reason the collection has virtual copies in it which I created for darkening skies and such. Why virtual copies would be considered in conflict with files on the HD.

I am using Photoshop CS3 for Windows. I have created a metadata template in Bridge with my contact information and my copyright information, etc. When I created the template the field called Copyright Status was not available but if I open an image and go into File Info by doing Shift-Ctrl-Alt-I the Copyright Status field is available and I can change it from Unknown to Copyrighted. I like this field because it shows the image is Copyrighted (Unknown looks bad and unprofessional) and also when you open the image in PS the © symbol shows at the top of the screen in front of the file name.
Is there a way to create a metadata template where I can have Copyrighted in the Copyright Status field?

Curious to know why and what is causing the metadata in files to change outside on lightroom. I will save a selected bunch of files and then moments later the end up with the metadata status of being changed outside of lightroom. They are not being opened in photoshop nor bridge. What would be causing them to be changed outside of lightroom and have the metadata status switch to "Changed on Disk"

When I take say a TIFF file that has been imported into Lightroom and edit in PS by choosing "Edit Original" and than save the edit in PS, when I get back to Lightroom the image has a metadata error icon on it. When I click on the icon it asks if it should apply the disk or Lightroom metadata. I click on disk and all seems well. But why is it doing this and is there a way to get it not to do so? Is it correct to use the disk metadata?

I have been using LR each and every day I have never once utilized any of the four default terms cooked-into the 'Metadata' Library Filter ('Date', 'Camera', 'Lens', 'Label').
Is there a way for me to set up new metadata search terms as defaults so I don't have to putz w/changing the same-old-same-old each and every time I open this filter?

How I can change the status of a certain area to transparent?
I know, I can change the "Transparency Alpha" in the colour box, but on screen is still displayed the color. Worse, I need a transparent area for an RPG Maker, and this program doesn't take said area as transparent besides the setting in Paint.net.

I've been using LR for adjusting photos for about 6-8 years now, but have just recently gotten time to start better organizing my stuff. I have about 40,000 images that mostly have keywords and descriptive file names, but are generally without ratings, color labels and are mostly not in collections. I must admit that there's a lot of junk in there (duplicates, mostly) that I have to purge. I can probably work it down to 10,000 images. In addition to putting ratings and labels on things, I want to sort them into collections, but that task would be easier if I knew which images were NOT in collections so I could concentrate on them and work that set down. I don't see a way to set up smart collections to show images that are not in a collection. It appears that the smart collection criteria can be selected from whatever text selection criteria are available, and I don't see inclusion in a collection as one of them. I also don't see collection status as one of the metadata items that could be used to filter things.
In a previous thread from 2007 I found the following workaround:
Clear the quick collection and set it to the target collection. In the library view, select all the collections. Select all the photos.Go to the catalog and view all photos. In the Edit menu, click on "invert selection".That selects all the images not in a collection. Pressing B puts them in the quick collection.
The only problem with this is that when you select an image from the quick collection and place it in a collection the image remains in the quick collection. In a smart collection filtered by collection status (not in a collection) it would disappear from the smart collection when it goes into a collection. So it would be much nicer if there were a way to filter for "not in a collection" for a smart collection or even in a metadata filter.
The above workaround does work, but you will have to refresh the quick collection whenever you lose track of which images you have placed into a collection.
Of course, the best solution would be not to get into my position in the first place. Always dump the junk out of the catalog and place all the keepers in appropriate collections.

I created an file by combining a number of images into a panorama. As is expected, the panorama picked up the IPTC metadata from one of the source images, and saved it into the resulting file.
If I had saved the file as a psd or tiff, I could easily use Bridge or Lightroom to change the IPTC metadata after saving the file. But Lightroom doesn't even read psb files, and Bridge won't let me change any of the metadata (the metadata appears to be read-only).
The only way I could figure out to change the metadata was to use exit tool. It seems very strange that a third-party tool is required to make rather simple changes to what is (I believe) a proprietary file format of Adobe. Or am I missing something?

I use a variety of programs to edit the xmp data (mostly Lightroom and exiftool right now), so I know the importance of the "Automatically write XMP data to file setting" (ON in my case). After a few days (actually more like a week) of writing xmp data and then reading into (or synching folders in) Lightroom, I found a number of "metadata conflicts" in my catalog. Since these are basically impossible to fix for a large catalog (since there is no way to show the files that have conflicts), I started over and created a new catalog, and imported all 40,000+ images into it.
However, with my new catalog (with presumably no metadata conflicts), the first image that I tried to change the metadata on gave me a metadata conflict (presumably when Lightroom tried to save the xmp data after I changed it). This was a jpg file, so the metadata is being (or not being) written into the file. Reading the metadata from the file into Lightroom did not fix the problem. The Metadata Status field in the Lightroom Metadata panel says "Unknown" and clicking on the word "Unknown" brings up a panel saying "There was an unknown error while writing metadata to this photo. Retry?", and neither retrying the save nor importing the settings from disk resolves the conflict.
I think that the problem is that the jpeg is somehow corrupt, because if I save a copy in Photoshop, I can read and write the metadata in that copy. And, the copy has, I think, the same metadata as the original. (Of course, the image is probably imperceptibly degraded because I re-jpeg'd it).
There is no message in Console (I'm on Mac). (See PS)
I am worried that I have a number of files with this kind of problem, I guess I could "Save Metadata" for all files in my catalog (thus updating the file modified date for all 2 TB of data, and causing a massive backup issue), and then look through my catalog for those elusive exclamation points. But I'd like something better.how the jpeg could have gotten corrupted, but I do have an archived version that I could look at.

I have a new Geotagger Pro 2 GPS (Solmeta) and tried it out yesterday. The GPS coordinants are not in the metadata. I do get the elevation and the direction the photo was taken. I tried Updating & Read Metadata in the menu but I still do not get the info. When viewed the photos in the camera, they had the GPS data.

i must have a preset metadata because all my photos have been imported using the created year as 2011, location as London and keyword as travel.
How do I clear the metadata?
all my photos have a date of 1-1-11 and travel as a keyword.
is there a way to change these as a group instead of individually?
is there a way to find the date the photo was taken?

I want to display the IPTC metadata in Lightroom 4 in the same way as in Bridge CS6 so that it only displays the fields I want to use - is this possible without having to install 3rd party software? I've tried the metadata pop-up menu selections but these either omit items I want to see or include many items which I don't use. I bought Lightroom because it was designed for photographers but I am discovering that there are a number of areas where it is not as flexible as Bridge.

I am transitioning to using RAW files more often. I add metadata, including GPS info, captions etc. Then invariably I need to get JPEGs to someone and have to go through the hassle of exporting the RAW as a JPEG with the metadata.
Is there a way I can get that metadata into the sorta sidecar JPEG file on my Mac without having to go through the export process?
I suppose I could designate the preference that on import the RAW and JPEG were treated as separate files; could I then just copy the metadata in? I haven't really worked with separate JPEG+RAW before. Would it happen automatically if I stacked them? Haven't really explored that.
It just seems that every time I have decided to use the RAW invariably I need the JPEG and if I don't have LR available (say I'm working on someone else's computer but accessing my own files)
