I have 2 questions.
1) Is the pen tool for cutting things out? I make all the anchor points but it fills the space I want to cut with colour. I've been told to use the pen tool to cut out faces etc..
2) Dumb question to most, but, what is a layer, why and how do you use them?
I see the word 'layer' used a lot so I figure its quite a common thing to be working with.
Since getting CS6 I have been puzzled to find that the patch tool in CS6 seemed not to work across layers whilst doing photo retouching. So I reverted to the other tools to get some work done and ignored the problem.
I have just discovered that the problem seems to be caused by the source layer being locked (as in the background layer). In this case, with an empty layer above selected and the patch tool using all layers, the tool looks as though it is working until the mouse is released, when the original content of the patch re-appears and the empty layer is still empty.
Only if the base layer is unlocked will the patch tool work as expected to put the correction onto on the empty layer above.the unlocked base.
Is this just on my Win7 x64 system, or is this a feaure/bug in CS6?
Some years ago I used to use an old version of PS at work. It was before the CSs but I can't remember the version. When I used the clone tool it would simply clone the area with the same tonal depth and I used it a lot. I now have CS6 and when I use the tool whatever I clone will darken over existing tones, as layers, and not blend in. Is there a setting so it clones at the same tonal depth and not layer-up?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have upgraded from CS3 to CS6, apparently a no-no. BECAUSE: when I open a CS3 file and work on it in CS6, save it, and then reopen it again later, the type layers are inoperable. Clicking in the type area to edit changes the type to something that was on the former CS3 file. For example, if I typed "BOY" in Univers in CS3, and in CS6, selected and retyped it as BOYHOOD in Times, clicking in the text area of BOYHOOD mysteriously brings back the old "BOY" type in Univers. If I unclick, sometimes it reverts to BOY and won't budge.
If I try to move text from one doc to another, it comes in as different words and style and size in the other doc.
I'm working with a file that has multiple layers that with almost exactly the same content.
The subject (car) just changes colors.
Let's say that there is a spot I want to clone out on each layer, (shown above as a black smudge) but when I do, the results are somewhat different every time. I'm looking for consistency.
Is there a way in CS6 to create a Tool Recorded Action to sample an area on a layer, clone out the ugly, then repeat the process on the layer below?
*The goal here is to sample an area initiated on Layer A (Yellow) and clone out an area on Layer A (Yellow)...
..then use the action to sample the exact same area, but this time sampled from Layer B (Orange) to clone out that same area on Layer B (Orange).
I want to get the same results on every layer so the look on every color is uniform.
I almost got it to work, but my problem occurs when I look at the details of the action.
If I could duplicate the steps and change the "Source: layer" to the layer name below, that might do it.
Also I used the shortcut CTRL + [ to "Select backward layer". When I look a the details on this it says "Without Make Visible." Is there a way to do this WITH MAKE VISIBLE?
I'm using the Photoshop CC in Windows8 64x as trial and find a curious bug with the Move Tool:Usually I select multiple layers creating a selection with the Move Tool on them, but in this new CC version the tool is selecting hidden layers too. More details: the hidden layer are inside a folder. The folder is hidden, but the inside layers are not.
This type of selection has always worked perfectly in previously versions, and of course, I leave the option "Auto Select> Layer" enabled.
Why does the move tool jump a few pixels when trying to line layers up? I have to zoom in to get a smoother movement and even at 1600% it still jumps a few pixels when i'm using it.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi switched from CS5 to CS6 Extended (Win 7 64bit) and I'm a little bit confused about the select/move tool (V). I have "automatic selection" activated and when I click on a layer, Photoshop often selects a nearby layer but not the one I'm clicking at - often the layer selected is more on top of the layer I was planning to select, but that was no problem in CS5 ... Is there anything I can change in the settings or is this behavior "normal"?
For example - a cursor placed at the marked position selected the white arrow-vector-shape.
Nothing is more tedious than not being able to use the direct selection tool to grab multiple points because there is another shape under it on a different layer. I'd think that locking those layers would prevent selection, but it does not.

this worked until yesterday. I didn't install any software on the pc or change any settings that I can think of. I'm using photoshop cs2. I've rebooted the computer several times and I've quit/restarted photoshop several times.
when I create an adjustment layer, I cannot paint black in the mask area. I can fill with black and paint white. if, after filling black and painting white, I press D (to swap foreground/background colors), I can paint, a paintbrush thing shows up in the history, but it won't change. if I press D again, and paint some more white, it shows up in white. likewise, if I choose black another way (eyedropper, setting rgb to 0,0,0), it behaves the same. likewise, if I don't start out by filling black, and I just try to paint black on the white mask, it behaves the same (doesn't work).
if I create a new layer, I can paint black on it. If I switch to the pencil tool rather than the brush tool, I can pencil black into my adjustment layer masks.
any suggestions?

My Daughter was doing homework on my office computer and somehow deleted my leyers tool on the right side. I have reinstalled Gimp 3 times ...and the only ones that appear to be fully working, are on all the other users, but mine .
how do I get the layers tool to reappear ?
I work at a fast pace, so I need the new layer button, in the toolbar to be available to me.
When I click new layer via the toolbar UNDOCKED to add a new vector layer, the options disappear.
However, If the layer menu is docked, I can click it.
I'm currently using Illustrator CS6 as a test version and when I use the pen tool to make a beaver (school assignment), it all end up in one layer. I want to have a new path-layer from every line with the pen tool, so I can remove lines in the layer panel too. At the moment it's one layer that have a picture of a beaver and I can't see the individual lines I've drawn. When I used CS5 recently I didn't have this problem. Is it a setting I can change or does it have something to do with the news in CS6?
View 1 Replies View RelatedEvery time I open up GIMP, I have to reposition the Tool Options menu that's all the way to the left so that I can see the menu options at the top (File, Edit, etc.), and I also have to move around the Layers menu as per my own preference.
Is there a way to pin them to a specific spot in GIMP and save them there so that every time I open GIMP they're in the same position as where I left them at?

The 'Template' checkbox gets activated in Layer Options dialog box, and the box gets closed, then, the Layer name and several icons at the bottom of the Layer Panel disappear.The Layer is still there without a name, and rolling over the icons on the Layers Panel I can see the Tool Icons.Illustrator Prefs were trashed/restored using the Opt-Shift-Command restart shortcut.

A third party developed the tool palette - mostly blocks, etc. but there are also icons to add whole series of layers to drawings. Click 'Architectural Layers' you add the architectural layers. Click 'Plumbing Layers' you add the plumbing layers. Since the original implementation, things have been changed.
How do I update these tools?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using CS6 and noticed that whenever I delete a layer that was a dupe of another layer with links (although not linked specifically to the deleted layer), the undeleted original layers become invisible on the canvas even though they are still visible in the layers pallette. I've been able to recreate this several times. Nothing I do will make the layers visible -I've tried moving them all to the top of the layers palette, making sure their opacity is 100%, making sure there are no layer effects, etc.

I work in Animation painting Backgrounds. My files are sometimes upwards to 200+ layers.I will use adjustment layers to quickly balance colours and constrast on top of those many many layers.
The only way that I know of how to apply adjustment layers it to every single layer ( by applying I mean I need to get rid of the adjustment layers because we cant use them in production but i need the new colours be applied to all layers underneath ) in a psd is to manually do it By duplicating the adjusment layer 200+ times and then merging each layer to one of those adjustment layers so that that layer can take the adjustment layers effect permanently.
The issue is that Within Those 200 layers I have some layers set to Multiply or OVERLAY. IT obviously wont apply the adjustment layer properly to those layers because those layer blend mode affect the layers under them. The colour wont be the same anymore in the spots that had the multiply blended mode.

I have 2 adjustment layers up top. I need to get rid of them by applying them to each layer! I cannot merge any of the layers. We need all those layers for production.I can apply the adjustment layers manually and this works GREAT for all Layers set to normal. THey take on the colour change just FINE.
However, The issue is that layer 6 and layer 4 are both set to mutiply and this screws up the colour once i apply the adjustment layers to each layer manually...
How can i apply my adjustment layers to a file like this with some layers being set to multiply while keeping the layers exactly the same configuration and The new colour taking effect exactly how i looks before i apply the adjustment layers? Now the simple solution is to merge the multiply layers to the layer that it affects HOWEVER I NEED those multiply layers to be separate!
I want to add the same 3 adjustment layers to about 20 photos and then in scripts, export layers to files, so that each photo includes the adjustments.

I would like to increase the font size in many text layers at a time by selecting them in the layers panel. The font increases, but the text boxes don't expand to fit the increased size text. So I am having to make each box bigger manually. Is there a way to have the boxes expand to fit bigger text automatically through the layers panel?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have now exactly the same problem as below with over 1000 images, I have saved them in .psd that has over 100 layers each. On top of those there is curves and levels layer that affects every layer below. I want to save all images to .jpg for videoedit with those curves at least. I don't want to merge same curves 100 times. Is there a solution in phothoshop cs5 or cs6 available? Would save alot of working hours. All I have got by this far is blank white images of adjustment layers and non adjusted jpg-files.

And say I created 3 adjustment layers on top of those 100 layers to get the adjustments that i want for those layers. I'm happy with the adjustments but Then I NEED to merge those 3 adjustment layers to ALL those 100 layers.
Is there a way to easily permanently apply the adjustments to each of those layers without having to do it manually? I absolutely need to merge the adjustments to the seperate layers because of how the layers are being used in a seperate 3d program.
So far what I've been doing is duplicating the adjustment layers for each layer and merging them to said layers separately.. I wish I could just right click the adjustment layer and Tell it to merge to everylayer it affects or apply to every layer underneath it!
I am loosing all my layers effects when I merge all the layers together to save the image in the tif format!
