Photoshop :: Layers As Images
May 13, 2008
I have a psd file with lots and lots of separate layers. I want to export only some of these layers as individual image files. I am aware of the Export Layers to Files option under the Files>Scripts menu. However there are some issues I have had with this. One, this exports every single layer in addition to some random white backgrounds. Two, when it exports a layer to an image, the image is not the exact size of the layer, rather the size of the whole psd canvas.
Third, there is no option to save as a .png file. Finally, sometimes it has trouble with a layer name and just cannot save it at all. So basically, I am looking for a way to save individual layers in a single .psd file as images, with the image sizes being the same size as actual layers. And preferably to be able to save them as .png files.

I can only get one image at a time into the layers panel. If I go to ‘new layer’ it shows a chequered image only. How can I bring my other images into this panel?
I know it is probably elementary, but I’m just learning.

I would like to use layers from several images in a single image. The idea is to give an x-ray view so that you can see images of different views of an object by selecting the opacity of the various layers. It would be similar to an image of the anatomy of a hand: you could see just the skin, or just the bones, or see the bones through the skin. Is this possible, and if so, how?

Im currently running photoshop CS6 on windows 8 and when I try and open a file the images come up in the layers but not the actual document.
I know this has already been posted about Photoshop CS5 but I think CS6 is slightly different.

I have layers for different possible end picture effects. eg text in different colors some of it on slopes etc. I would like to send the client a few different choices without having to flatten or "merg visible" layers. If I do that then I loose the possibility of changes that the client might want.

how to import new images into the layers panel. If I hit "create new layer" all I get is a blank layer. What I want to do is import an image from which I will cut out part of it and layer it onto another image. For example: lets's say I want to put an image of myself in front of a tree. I want to take the image of myself from one picture and layer it onto the picture which has the tree on it. How do I get both of those images into the same layers panel? I can get the picture of myself into the layers panel as layer #1, then I can cut myself out of the picture. My problem is, when I try to import the picture with the tree on it, it opens itself up in a new tab. If I try to hit "create new layer", only a blank layer apprears above my first layer. I have tried to drag the new image onto the layers panel, but it won't attach. All of the tutorials I have been able to find/watch, already have all of the images they are working with pre-loaded into the layers panel. I just need to know how to get my images into the panel, so that I can start to work with them.

I am relatively new to Photoshop, and am using CS3. I would like to be able to create a collage with a background image, with superposed layers that are each an image cropped to a circle or ellipse. I found an article on how to do this with a heart shape using Photoshop Elements. He...using-Elements), but after a few paragraphs, the controls specified there do not correspond with CS3.
Preferably I would like each circle to be framed with a relatively thin colored border, to set them apart from each other and the background. Outside the border, the circular layers should be transparent.
I understand that I can create a simple circular shape that will show up as a layer and have a corresponding path, and that I can make a selection from the path.

Is there a way to open multiple images in 1 Photoshop PSD, with each image in it's own layer? I thought it may be the quickest way to stick images. The images will be named consecutively.

I used to have CS5 on my computer, after which I used the CS6 trial, and I never had any problems when stacking images using Auto-Blend Layers -> Stack Images. However, I recently purchased a subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud and after uninstalling the old PS versions and installing Cloud, Photoshop freezes every time I try to stack images.
My computer has very good specs, runs Windows 7, and both the OS and PS are up to date.

I'm an animation intern working for an animator who does things old school.
She gives me hundreds of animation cells to scan using her scanner into photoshop CS(nothing), using the scan utility in photoshop. the result, as we are doing it, is hundreds of separate image files. i then copy and paste each of these image files into another custom sized file as separate layers.
i know there must be a way to automate this or do it with an action, but i cannot figure it out. if you think this isn't possible with photoshop CS(nothing) i have CS3 available to me on my personal laptop.

According to 'About Lightroom;
this is what I'm running:
<Lightroom 3.6, Camera Raw 6.6>
I used to 'merge to panorama', or 'open as layers' in Photoshop regularly, but today it no longer works. When I try, the message comes up: "This version of Lightroom may require the Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in version 6.6 for full compatibility. Please update the Camera Raw plug-in using the update tool available in the Photoshop help menu."
When I go to Photoshop Help Menu, 'no available updates at this time' is the message that comes up. I manually downloaded the Camera Raw 6.6, but to no avail.
When attempting to edit using PS, the program DOES open, but nothing happens... the files do not appear. They DO open individually when Edit in Photoshop CS4 is selected, but I prefer the 'open in layers' option, and often use the 'merge to panorama'...

I've only just started having a problem with Photoshop. I'm running it on Mac OSX
My images will randomly take a chunk out of all layers, and the background will turn black where it was originally white. In one case all the layers on my canvas were distorted by a checker pattern of bright colours. All the images I am currently working on are in RGB mode which were hand drawn black and white images that were scanned.
I'm not sure what is going on but closing the image without saving and the closing photoshop and even restarting my computer doesn't seem to fix the problem.

Is there a way to export all/some of the layers in a PDN to single images ?
maybe an "export layers" option ?
I think I saw a plugin some where that saves layers. but i'm not sure.
the reason for me asking is that I have started a number of new projects and most of the work is already based on and done under other different PDN projects and I want to take a few layers from each PDN project file..
I tried the long way to check/unchecked layers and flatten the image each
time , but its too much work :-(
there must be a faster way to do it.
If not , can something like this be added to Paint.Net.
we do have under layers "import from file".
can "export to file" be added ?
where i can select the type of Image like jpg/png and it would export the selected layers.

How to take 4 images of the same size and using layers, put the images next to and on top of each other, for a very nice array of all 4 images saved as one.
Now, though, I'm attempting to do the same thing, but use images of different sizes. Unlike before, when using the "Align" function, the layers are now stacking on top of each other, instead of next to each other.
The only variable I see that is different is that all the images are no longer the same size.

Basically what I need to do is capture a video shot, and place a play button on top of it. I thought the simplest way would be to just open each image as a separate layer but couldn't find a way to do that.
Eventually I made the screen shot the background image of an html page, and the play button the foreground image. Then I was able to position them just the way I wanted and capture a screen shot, then trim and edit in Gimp.

I use the "Paste as new image" feature in GIMP quite a bit and I'm deeply in need of a "Paste all layers as new images" plugin now.
I need it to do exactly what I'm stating, to paste all layers in a file as new separate images.
Since one can not select multiple layers in GIMP, pasting all layers to new separate images would be okay.
I wasn't able to find this one in a search, but who knows what it is called if it exists?
Perhaps there is some sort of batch process possible, like batch processing or Actions in Photoshop.

I have scoured the net for any Script-Fu or Batch to do this, and only find old code that is no longer good for gimp 2.6. For some absolutely insane reason (as far as I am concerned), gimp has failed time and time again (since their inception) to actually make it available to export multiple images at the same time. I literally have 300 layers, and for me to crop them all and save them as images would take an entire day.
Why hasn't this been made available? Is there any code or anything I can use to accomplish this task in Gimp 2.6? Photoshop allows it, and has since its inception! Why not Gimp? Is it that difficult to create? Are there really no plugins to do this?

I'm new to GIMP. I want to use it to create/test colour (or greyscale) separations for a woodcut, but I'm finding it hard.
For example I have attached a black and white image. kirsty.JPG (84.7K)
Number of downloads: 3
I open the image in GIMP, then from Image I choose mode - indexed, 4 colours. So far so good as this gives me the 4 greyscale levels I need to create a two block woodcut. Now I use the 'select by colour' tool to find the first colour, and I paste this into a new layer. That works fine. Then I select the next colour and try to paste that into a second new layer, but it doesn't work. It produces another layer called 'Floating Selection (pasted layer)' and won't paste the second or third layers.
How can I separate the 4 layers into individual images??

how can I manage existing images, layers, ecc. with Python-Fu? Its methods don't accept IDs (unlike Script-Fu) and it returns me an error if I try to do it. More simply, how I can reference to an existing "IMAGE", "DRAWABLE", ecc. object?
