Photoshop :: Large Image Won't Open
Oct 16, 2003
I have created a graphics file around 150 MB. When I try to open it in Photoshop, it gives an error message after trying to load...
"cannot open file because a disc error occured."
Some more info: I'm running on an iBook 2001 model (G3 processor, 600 Mhz, 384 MB RAM), the file is a psd (Photoshop) file.
I currently have around 2.85 GB left on my HD and I tried increasing the memory usage in prefs to around 300MB. I even tried using my HD as secondary scratch disc and purged cache in file browser. I figured this might free up some room. I also figure this might be a problem of space, so I tried backing up some files onto CD.

I'm running photoshop cs3 and recently every time I try and open a file nothing happens, well what happens is I see the open file box pop up and disappear and then I can not do anything in PS, every time I click something I hear a noise and thats it, I have to restart Photoshop.
The only way to open a file is if I drag and drop a file in PS.
I'm running windows XP service pack 2 if that helps at all, and yes I have reinstalled and the problem still persists.

I have this project I need to print in a newspaper. It's a PSD in CMYK, 300dpi (20 cm x 32 cm). I was told it need to be a TIFF or a EPS with text layers converted to paths.
So I've "turned into shape" every text layer I've had (it's tricky 'couse this way 1 text layer = one font color ... so if I had a block of text with 3 different colors I had to break it into 3 different layers ... anyways) and saved it as a TIFF and EPS. Just to see which one will be better (resemble my original PSD more?).
so after "saving as" TIFF my file grew from 177mb to 208mb and I still had layers and eveything (I've never actually used TIFF files as the main project files). I can preview the file in IrfanView - I understand TIFF still contains all my paths right? (well it should being a 200+ mb file ;))
I then tried the "Save As Photoshop EPS". Now the file is 95mb aaaaaand I cannot open it with any Adobe software. why is that?
Photoshop says:
"could not complete your request becouse the parser module cannot parse the file"
and Illustrator says:
"The operation cannot complete becouse of an unknown error"
By the way - I've always thought that EPS is a paths-only format. It seems it can also contain raster graphics?

I downloaded an image from the NASA LROC Site that is around 10,000 x 68,000 pixels in size. It is HUGE! But I get an error message from Photoshop when attempting to open the file:
Photoshop can only decode JPEG encoded images up to 32767 pixels wide or tall.
The file is a PTIF file around 70mb in size. How do I get PS to open this file? (I am using Photoshop CS6 Extended on Windows 7).

I was scanning a roll of drawings on a large format scanner, and I ended up with JPGs that are larger than 30k pixels wide. (I understand this is a limitation PS has)
The issue is, I spent hours scanning all these rules, and now I have a few JPEGs files that are very large (45k x 10k pixels), that I cannot open at all). The JPGs open fine in the windows viewer, so I know they are not corrupt.
If I can find someway to open them, I can then resize them slightly to fit within the limit, or save them as (PSB - Large Format). One of the ideas I had was to find some other software that I can use to open and re-save, or to split the JPGs in 2 or 3 pieces, and then piece them back together in Photoshop.

I have a large 300 M layered pdf file that when I attempt to open eventually pops up the "not enough memory (RAM) message.
I am on a windows XP Power Spec computer with 1.97 GB RAM I have allocated 1106 MB for memory useage, 12 history states and 8 cache level.
I have a 187 GB Seagate exterior harddrive as my main scratch disk and a mirrored main drive C with 154 GB of free space as my second scratch disk.
I also experience a canvas disapearance occasionally when using the polygonnal lasso tool. I can be clicking along and all of the sudden the image disapears until I click again. Annoying but not unworkable.

An associate is trying to open a 60,000 x 60,000 tiff file using PS CS5.1-Extended on a windows 7 platform with 6G RAM.
He gets the error message "Photoshop can only decode JPEG encoded images up to 32767 pixels wide of tall."
I suggested that he might have a jpeg whose extension got changed to tiff. He says no, it's a tiff, and besides how would one generate a jpeg that size.

I have a very large PDF that I need to open in Photoshop (It is a template image). The size of the image is 125.9843" x 91.5354".
However, when I open in Photoshop the image is automatically resized to about 106" x 79". I have tried to manually input the dimensions upon opening the file, however, when I open the file and check "Image Size" the dimensions are 106" x 79" again.
I can open the image in Illustrator at the correct dimensions automatically, and the PDF file itself is at the correct dimensions.
[I am using Photoshop CS5.1]

Most of the time I export photos from lightroom archive if I want to use a pic. Now I found that I can't load/edit this files in PS. Open yes, pic is to see, but there will be alwway a ring and I can't do anything. The only I can do is killing PS by TaskManager.
Open smaller pics ist just fine. So I found: convert the LR-Jpeg by another programm to 96ppi. Open it in PS an make it to 300ppi, edit the one and only layer, save it as usual Jpeg. Now it es a big edited Jpeg picture. (But doesn't make sence to change the sizes therefore) But if I try to edit this again, I will get the same hanging PS after it was opened.
Maybe it is an issue for large files in PS? And has nothing wih my LR-exported files to do?

I work in a print shop that prints biggish stuff. I will frequently have files that postscript to close to a GB or more. Working on simple vector art with a few images in CC is not too much of a problem, but I still notice CC is slower than CS 6. The big problem is when I get a few 200mb PDF's, or files with layers of transparent PSD files in them etc, big busy files, then AI CC really bogs down, or frequently crashes altogether. CS 6 is MUCH better. I don't have the font issues, AI CC works fine with simple files. Saving & opening these big files is such a problem, I just save them back to CS 6, but that causes problems too, I do not want to, nor should I have to have 2 versions open at the same time.
I always try to optimize the files as best possible, but it is tough sometimes as they R supplied by the customer, and the time it takes. We save to a Windows Server 2008 R2 box over gigabit network, which I know is not best practice, but no choice with the sheer volume of files. Would B insane to try to keep track & copy them back & forth, and it was never a big issue with CS 6. I am the first victim in our office, but the other 3 Mac Pro's will B switching over to CC this week, and I know the operators will B crying.

I have been asked to produce a large text based image to be printed on a gym floor with a size of approx. 2m squared. I am using a Collegiate style font and then rasterising the text to allow different coloured parts and blending the letters in to each other. I have produced the image in small scale, but now need to redo the image suitable for printing at such a large size. I know I will have to start again from scratch but am concerned that it may be pixelated at such a large size.

I am working on a project that is a large print of about 30 inches wide and 20 inches in height.
(I just wrote a big post but for some reason when I tried posting it the forum logged me off and it didnt post so I wont get too detailed here.)
Basically I need to print the image for example using 9 piece of normal paper and stick it together with transperant tape to make a large image.
Is there a way to do this without the need to cut the borders on each page, I really would like to print borderless pages and not cut them.
