Photoshop :: Cannot Use Gradient Tools On Selected Layer
Sep 23, 2013I cannot use gradient tools on selected layer on object. What is that issue?

View 4 Replies1. I'm trying to fill a shape on my image with a gradient effect. I can use the paintbucket tool to fill in a regular solid colour, but when I try and use the gradient tool it fills the entire window with a gradient. How can I fill a particular part of the image with a gradient (it's also not really possible to use the marquee tool).
2. My image has some 'broken' shapes that floods out the whole image when I use the paintbucket fill. Is there a setting so that small gaps can be ignored and therefore no bleeding occurs (such as there is in Flash MX)?
I am using photoshop CS6 extended. I cannot access the alternative gradient tools and am wondering if the plug-in failed to download or if I have somehow disabled them in the preferences.

The tut shows that I should be able to click the Mask button in order to create a trans BG. However, mine is grayed out. I cannot find a reason why that would be. I am able to use the Layer Mask under other circumstances.
(The tut has me take an image, draw around the image to practice pulling/dragging, twisting, adding handles etc & so forth).
I have the pen tool set to Path but the Mask doesn't become available under any of the options.
The tut says to click Ctrl + Click on the path and then to click the Mask button.
why the Mask is grayed out?
I'm hoping this is a dumb problem that is easily disabled with a perhaps inadvertently-enabled Preference somewhere. In the past few months I've had a lot of trouble with tools I've selected via shortcut key not... "sticking".
In other words, I'll press "Z" for Zoom or "V" for Move, and before I have a chance to use the tool, it's reverted back to whatever tool I was using already. I can sit there and watch it revert back after a few moments on its own.
If I select the tool from the Tool Palette manually by clicking the icon with the mouse, it always stays, as expected.
I seem to encounter this problem more often when I'm utilitizing a lot of RAM or have a very complex document open. Restarting Photoshop seems to "fix" the problem temporarily, but eventually it starts happening again.
I'm using CS6 13.0.5 x64 on OS X 10.8.4.
I'm running an Intel i7 Win7 64, with CS5 installed. 12GB RAM, Scratch disk on a separate drive to installation. The problem is manifest in both 32 and 64 bit versions of Photoshop.
The issue is that when I select a new tool with a keyboard shortcut, there is a brief paus and the cursor changes to the new tool, then it simply switches back to the previous tool. The behaviour is not aparrent when selecting tools using the buttons in the toolbox with the mouse/pen.
Example:
- Move tool currently active
- Press B to activate brush
- 500ms elapse
- Cursor changes to brush, Toolbox "Brush" icon highlights as if selected.
- 800-1000ms later, tool resets back to "Move", "Move" icon in toolbox highlights.
The only workaround I have found is if I quickly "Double Tap" the keyboard shortcut (Or triple/quadruple sometimes), it seems to force the change. Restarting PS does not work, the problem exists in all files of all sizes. The UI is also noticably laggy.I found a similar problem here:[URL]... but none of the proposed solutions were of use.
I find the crop tool in CS6 to be such a pain compared to the version in LR4. When using the mouse (in CS6) to reposition the crop area the box hops around and seems to "jump" into certain positions - this is especially pronounced if it gets close to an edge.
I realize I can reposition with the arrow keys but I was wondering if there is a way to disable the "jumping" while using the mouse?
When I choose a tool and do whatever it does, how do I get rid of it afterwards ? I try enter, escape, etc. Nothing. Like the scissors, or the path tools, they even mess up my creations after I close down the program and come back in.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'd like to select the whole gradient that I have created on its own layer. So I cmd-click (Mac) on the layer's icon. But after doing this not the whole gradient is selected but only the darkest part of it!
With every other layer it worked so far... But not with gradients...
when I selected a layer in the layers window it's gray instead of blue, and if I try to move around the content of the layer I get that message : « Could not use the move tool because the target channel is hidden »
View 4 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to change the functionality of the layers so that when a new layer is created or a layer is duplicated that it automatically is created below the selected layer? I always organize my files with elements at the top of the document at the top of the layers panel and have them in decending order (unless there is a reason for an object to be above another) so that it is easier to navigate the page. Right now this means I spend a lot of time moving layers up and down which gets rather annoying. I believe I saw at one point that there is a key command for duplicating a layer below the existing one, but I can't remember how anymore. ability to make a blanket change in preferences.

In 2008 before the floating layer manager the manager looked as the Classic version does now in AutoCAD ACA 2012 with the tool of "new layer from standard". This tool now only seems to be in the floating layer manager and when I switch to Classic manager the "new layer from standard" is removed from the dialog box.
I want to use the classic dialog but have access to the "new layer from standard" tool

I create gradients all the time and i'm wondering if there's a quick way to create a gradient based on the current selected object's fill color. For example: I have selected a box with a fill color of BLUE. I go to the gradient panel and see that what the gradient will be if I click on it (that is usally based on a default gradient WHITE to BLACK, or it comes from the most recent gradiented object I touched). So I click on it and the gradient is activated with the stops being not BLUE. What i want is... if i select a box with a BLUE fill and click on gradient - it will create a gradient with both stops being the same BLUE as the fill color. This would be very convenient because instead of clicking on each stop, shift-eyedropping the the blue color from a duplicated box, it would instantly start with the blue-blue gradient for me to tweak (in the case below for a button i would make the higher stop lighter and lower stop darker).
It's somewhat useful to select an object with a gradient to "copy" that gradient, select a new object, click on the gradient panel and have this new object take on that exact gradient. But most of the time i'm not copying gradients but i'm creating new ones, and it makes more sense for me to create a gradient derived from the fill color.
I have a GIF image that I need to add something to, but I don't want to add it to every single individual layer. Is there a way to add it over or behind the entire GIF so that it remains static while the GIF's frames cycle - like a watermark or something?
Or if not, is there maybe a script-fu that copies and merges a selected layer over every other individual layer automatically, without messing them up?
I know I'll probably have to just end up manually adding it to each layer, (so many layers...).
When i click on the green line has you can see on the image. The layer toolbar wont show me the right layer, like if it's not working. But i can see the right layer inside propreties.
Is there a system variable to ajust to see my layers inside the Layer tool bar?
I'm having issues with Civ3d 2013. I pushed off upgrading from 2012 because of the format change and the service pack release. I was hoping little glitches would be fixed.
Here are the a couple of glitches to date that I have seen no resolution to in the long list of threads.
1. Layer filters do not filter, unless I have checked "Apply filter to toolbar". The problem is, I dont want to apply them to the toolbar.
2. Publishing to PDF - when set to lines merge (set in the page layout and the publish setting), the wipeouts dont work, and the background masks on leaders makes a faint border around the text in the PDF. When set to overwrite, to get the wipeouts to not print to the PDF as a big black blob, they have to be on a layer set to color 255. I can work around most of the wipeouts, except for dimensions because the background mask doesn't seem to take.
radial gradient on the same layer. I was watching a tut and im pretty sure he was doing just that but he didnt say how he was doing it. I tried the ctrl, shift, alt buttons combinations but everytime it just gave me a new gradient not adding another.

I have two layers, the one below contains the backgroundcolor and the one above contains a transparent pattern (the stripes) which I defined before (another question: do you know sites containing nice patterns/brushes/sets/gradients for PS for free). no I would have to make a gradient on the top layer to fade out the pattern ...
I'm trying to apply 2 gradients on a single layer. When I applied the second gradient, it replaced with the 1st one. Is that possible to do so without having 2 separate layers?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to fade the left section of a PSD image I created so that it gradually fades to nothing using a Rectangular Marquee.
The problem is that I cannot get the gradient itself to change after I have used the Gradient Editor to make it 90% Black on the left & 10% gray on the right.
Seems this color choice in a Layer mask would have the desired effect, but after editing the gradient still it looks & works the same as the default. (No Change to the Gradient)
Can someone explain to me how to customize the Gradient in Photoshop CS?
In a new CS5 I didn't meet this problem, but since I have to work on CS3 (Windows) for a while, When I select a layer in a layer panel and then I want to move it with a move tool, in my earlier experience the selected layer in panel was moved, despite the point from which I start to drag.
Now, if I select layer1, but start to drag in a window when pressing on layer0 (it's too hard to pick slim lines of layer1), it "forgets" that I selected layer1 and drags layer0.
Unify layer properties
1.In the Animation panel (Photoshop Extended CS5) or Timeline panel (CS6), change the attribute to one frame.
2.In the Layers panel, click Unify Layer Position , Unify Layer Visibility , or Unify Layer Style to have the changed attribute apply to all other frames in the active layer.
I have multiple photographs I would like to create a video of. I want the fade affect to be applied to each picture, but so far I have only been able to update the fade on each idividual frame. how to duplicate the fade affect to all my frames.
I have Photoshop CS6.
I can't edit/use any tools of my images b/c it says the layer is locked.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIn PS i can Magic wand selection shape from one layer, drop to sub layer and copy that selected shape from that sub layer. How do I do this in illistrator, and moreover, from multiple layer at the same time.
For instance, in PS = Import an image of gold - select a text phrse with wand - drop to gold - copy paste = gold text.
When I apply a gradient to a shape layer, the gradient is always applied as a rectangle.
e.g.
The red rectangle implies the edges of the gradient. It's a horizontal gradient. What I'm after is for the gradient to be applied in a way that uses the shape layer for the edges... so the same value will be applied evenly to the left side of the shape and then spread evenly to the right. Is this possible?
I found a photoshop file somewhere on the net and the really fascinating ting about it was one of its gradient layers. I has a behavior I have never come across yet, because whenever you remove certain parts of the layer mask, i.e. paint the bottom half black for example, photoshop adjusts the gradient to the remaining opaque part of the layer.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI want to combine two photo's and have a gradual transition. So I move one photo into the other, select layer mask, then gradient, drag left to right, and presto I have a nicely merged photo. However I would also like a gradient from Top to Bottom (and left to right) on the same photo. How do you apply mutliple gradients to the same photo? If I select gradient again, it just overlays the first. I want two or more gradients.

View 4 Replies View Relatedi'm trying to fade out the last few inches of a photograph so it blends more seamlessly into backgrounds it's placed onto.If I use the gradient tool, set to "Foreground to Transparent" I get the proper effect, but instead of fading to transparent it fades to white.. which dosen't work when I move the layer over a coloured background.
I've read and watched many tutorials on this, and they all say to create a layer mask, and then use the gradient tool.. but for some reason anytime I have the layer mask selected the gradient tool won't work at all..
I don't like the radius of the gradient fill of my shape layer in Photoshop. I cannot find any hints about how to expand the gradient fill to cover a different area inside of the shape layer.
How can I transform gradient fills of vectors shapes in PS?
