Photoshop :: CS5 / Scratch Disc Preferences Window Pops Up At Ctrl+alt+shift?
Feb 10, 2013
I want to "Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings File", but at startup when I hold down [ctrl alt shift] I get the "scratch disc preferences" window instead. It was fine for a long while and this just started recently.
I have Windows and Photoshop CS5. The scratch disc preferences is on the first selection 'start up'.
This same thing was happening in Photoshop CS3 and I could never figure out why. I figured that since CS4 was coming out, I would buy it, stop using CS3 and the problem would be solved, well it's not. So far, I'm happy with the new program but for some reason, out of nowhere, while working on a photo, the Photoshop Help window (which opens as a web browser window) will pop up for no reason! Today, it popped up over 6 or 7 times and I nearly had to crash the program to get it to stop. I figured this problem would have been solved with the new version since the same thing was happening in CS3 but it hasn't. I'm running a Windows XP-based machine that I built myself about 2 years ago. I have a 512mb ATI Raedon X1650 video card and have 4GB of RAM so this machine has far more than enough power to run the program. I updated my video and mouse drivers prior to installing the program.
This is my first post, and I was hoping someone can help me out. I'm looking to add a seperate internal HD to use as the Photoshop Scratch exclusively. I'am considering the WD Raptor 36GB SATA 16MB 10000RPM.
My question is: Size-wise, will 36GB be enough?
I'm on a budget. I can almost get 2 x 160GB SATA 7200 for the price of the 1 x Raptor 36GB, so I really want to be sure I'm doing the rigth thing and aiming for speed.
My Set-Up would then be: Internal 1: 320 GB 7200 (main drive / programs & system installations) Internal 2: 36 GB Rapter (photoshop scratchdisc exclusive) External 1: 500 GB Mybook (all documents)
I get an error which says my scratch disc is full. The question is how does one empty an existing scratch disc? None of the manuals seem to cover this.
once i was reading an adobe pdf "How to get better performance in photoshop cs5" - that was in 2009 or 2010, and may be outdated, but there was a calculation method to determine the size of a scratch disc. (similar calculation see below, if i can remember right)
i am asking myself, how can i determine the correct size of an external SSD-scratch disc, only used by photoshop (completely empty):should i buy a 128GB or 256GB or 512GB SSD which is only reserved for photoshop?
basic question 1 : i guess i should avoid to set the internal SSD as photoshop scratch disc, as it slows down everything?
basic question 2 : in sense of maximum performance: better buy an external USB3.0 or thunderbolt SSD? will photoshop really use the extra thunderbolt speed when swapping data?
secondary question:
can i calculate the size regarding my daily working habits?
i am mainly working like this:
- with my imac 27" late 2013 with 32GB RAM and 256 GB internal pci-e SSD (800 MB/sec), which will stay always half empty for performance reasons. - OSX 10.8 mountain lion and 10.9 mavericks soon - photoshop cs5, cs6 and cc (always without extended) - 8bit and 16bit mode - only RGB - with latest phocus/Hasselblad and canon RAW Files which produce a basic .psb document at ... - 10.000 x 7000 px at 300dpi
[code]....
i wonder how to calculate ?
for example:
10.000 x 7000 px at 300dpi needs for one image layer at 16bit: 2GB RAM in photoshop cs6 or cc (just as a number), this may be wrong so lets take 2GB RAM and multiply with 10 image layers in my .psb file (16bit) = 20 GB RAM, and multiply with 20 adjustment layers (guess they need less ram, for one lets say 500MB) = 20GB + 10GB = this 16bit .psb layer file would need 30GB RAM, so when i have 32GB in my imac, i set cs6 or cc to 70% ram usage, it misses at least round 8-10GB RAM > can i guess that photoshop would swap these 8GB onto my scratch disc? or do i miss something important in my thinking?
I've been using Photoshop CS5 for awhile now (about a year and a half). Up to yesterday I was running OSX Snow Leapord with no issues. Yesterday I upgraded to OSX Lion and today, my first day using Photoshop in Lion, I'm getting repeated "scratch disc error" messages with a "quit" button (no other options). Photoshop works fine for awhile, three hours or so, and then I'll get the "scratch disc error" message and will be forced to quit Photoshop and restart.
My main drive is a 2Tb drive with 1.7Tb of available space, so I'm sure scratch disc space isn't a problem. I've got about another Tb of scratch disc space available on two other internal drives. I've got 14Gb of Ram, all memtested and working perfectly. It clearly seems to be an issue with OSX Lion since it never happened before today. A few other details: I'm up to date with Photoshop CS5, I have Open GL turned off because I'm on an older Mac Pro (a 3.0 Ghz dual quad core, 2.1) and my video card doesn't play nicely with Open GL (a whole different kind of crash).
All three times I've gotten the "scratch disc error" pop-up today it seems to have been when I open multiple files. This last time I opened something like 8 files. Big deal; sometimes I open 40 or more without any problems. I have yet to lose any of my work (I save constantly - a habit born out of past frustrations), so it's managable, but it shouldn't be happening.
I recently changed the Photoshop (CS6) Scratch Disk choice from the default Boot Drive to one of the other internal drives in my MacPro (OS 10.6.8).
When I restart Photoshop (CS6) I get the message:"Could not open scratch file because disc is not available" and Photoshop will not launch.
I then restart Photoshop with "Command - alt - shift" keys held down (as per suggestion at URL.....)and reset the preferences which allows Photoshop to come back.(Resetting preferences returned the Boot Drive to scratch disk status.)
I have another MacPro that - same OS 10.6.8 and Adobe CS6 - and I don't have this scratch disk allocation problem. What is going on with the one MacPro that prevents me from selecting a Photoshop scratch disk other than the boot drive?
I am on OSX10.6.8 with CS4 and CS5 (some of my actions only run on CS4, so I quit and launch back and forth).
I had my CS 4 and 5 Scratch Prefs set to a specific scratch partition on another local disk where I had a small partition dedicated towards it. I was doing some disk maintenance on that other disk and forget to go into CS and reset the scratch to the start-up disk. Now I cannot open CS4 or CS5 because it is looking for a scratch disk that does not exist.
Is a complete re-install the only fix, or is there a command line or other way other way than a complete re-install?
popup boxes like the one that occurs on export to set compression level, as well as the notifier of colour profile (option to keep or convert) appear behind the main window of Gimp, so I need to alt+tab over to the new window.
Is there a way to adjust this so that they pop up on top of Gimp?
No one of the used files are bigger than 20MB in file size. When opening the file, my empty hard drive space (40GB of free space) decreases to ZERO. Which temporary file on earth can be 40GB big? My system is an i Mac with 24GB RAM. How can this happen?
EDIT: I just found out this might be the so called scratch-disc. But anyway, how can a file take up this much space? Photoshop has a allocated RAM space of 16GB on my system.
Using CS6 on Windows 7 and Illustrator has decided not to acknowledge my Ctrl key, Shify key or space bar.
I have tried resetting Illustrator and even deleted the App data files but it didn't work. I found people with similar problems but never a solid solution. I even uninstalled evernote when some person said that worked for them.
At the moment if I try to undo I get the Zoom tool and I can no longer save with Ctrl + S, I can't bring up the hand tool with space or use any of the more common shorctcuts. This problem only affects Illustrator in all other programs the keys work fine, including other programs in CS6.
I really got used to the short cut of editing text pressing ctrl+left SHIFT + t , this brings me right into the
text box where I am able to quickly access all the text features, now since last update every time I make a text change in that window my text drops one line down and even though I will hit the cursor to front and back space it bringing it right to top when I hit OK it still drops my text one line down, this has become very annoying...
I love this feature but I am unable to bring it back to its original functional way. I did reinstalled corel , and yes I did reset the application still the same thing is happening.
So this really doesn't have much to do with objects in a drawing. Say for instance, I go into the PURGE dialogue box, and I want to select multiple layers to purge, but not all of them. If I click a layer, and the hold CTRL and click other layers, the only one that stays highlighted is the one I just clicked...so using CTRL doesn't allow me to highlight multiple entities at the same time.
It's gets a little more weird using SHIFT. The conventional SHIFT method (works in Windows Explorer and other applications) is clicking an object, holding SHIFT, and then clicking another object further down the list...this will highlight both of those entities clicked, plus every single entitiy in between them. In AutoCAD (use the PURGE dialogue box again for reference), if I click an object, hold SHIFT and click an object down the list, it will highlight the last object clicked and everything in between the two, but it will deselect the original object. Also, if I use SHIFT to select multiple objects, and then go back to the original that was deselected and hold CTRL to select it, the last object that was selected using SHIFT gets deselected.
using mac os I need to change my scratch disc from the default "system" to an external drive.
In preferences> scratch discs it sees the hard drive i have attached...so i choose it, I click ok and get the usual warning about having to restart illustator to implement the change. problem is, when i quit, then restart illustrator, no dice. it's defaulted back to " system". I change it again. click ok. then, just to see, i re- open the preference panel. it's already gone back to " system". what gives? i've tried over and over and it just wont take.
1) I'm unable to designate an internal drive as a scratch disc (non boot drive). Drive is clean, empty, I've chkdsk'd, permissions set to full, I can read and write files on it, and I'm able to designate it as scratch for Illustrator but PS6 doesn't like it. Says I don't have access.
2) I upgraded to PS6 extended (cloud) and after a week it now hangs during startup at loading Nik Color Efex Pro 4 plugin. Hangs for about 3 minutes before continuing.
"fit on screen" and command+0 resize window despite "zoom resizes window" being disabled in PS preferences.
- How do i disable the resizing of the window for this scenario? - Why? I work on two levels frequently - manipulating details, command-0 for checking the whole, and then zooming back into details. Command+0 resizes and repositions my window disregarding my specific window layout. Fullscreen is sadly no option, i usually work on multiple windows side by side specificly arranged.
Firstly, I cant get the reset preferences window to appear, as isntructed, by holding ctrl/alt/shift down and opening the application - I just get the details of the shortcut. tried on the actual.exe file and still dont get the window as described.
secondly, the hand tool does not seem to work? I select it, the 4 options appear in the tool bar above and the little hand Icon, but clicking and dragging on the file in the open window, has no effect, I cant move the file around the window as I supposed to be able to do.
The problem that i have, is that it does not appear the "next" button in the windows "Create Disc". How can i solve. With this problem i can not burn the project.
photoshop CS2 stoped displaying the red channel correctly on all images. The red channel displays very muted color.
After deleting all preferences of CS2, cleaning out the Windows registry, and upgrading to CS3 the problem still remains.
In CS3 however, the color shift goes away if I drag the image outside of Photoshop's main window.
I have a screenshot of this, http://www.miats.com/tmp/PhotoshopIssue.jpg
Photoshop states that both of the large images are solid R:255 G:0 B:0. However, after print screening the images and pasting them back into Photoshop, it shows that the one on the left is actually R:201 G:88 B:34.
The same thing happens for green and blue as well, though the difference is much less dramatic.
I don't remember changing any settings and my laptop (Win XP, CS2) does not have this problem when loading the same images.
My computer is running VISTA 32bit with 3GB of ram. The graphics card is a NVIDIA 6800.
I was trying to animate my character and when I wanted to change the frame-rate (under Animation Preferences) the error "//Error: Cannot Find Procedure 'preferencesWnd'" came up. I also found that if I just wanted to access Window -> Settings/Preferences -> Preferences the same exact error would appear. I've tried deleting the preferences folder in My Documents to no avail.
Unfortunately any one with a similar issue seems to be dealing with custom scripts. I'm not, I'm just trying to open the preferences window.
Multiple objects are selected, I hold shif and cross-window over objects from right to left, I expect everything I cross to be deselceted. I my testing only one item is deselected.
Is there a variable I am forgetting about here or is something a miss?
I recently decided to start using bit stream font navigator, how every when I first opened it and went through the wizard process, I wasn't thinking clearly and I had all my fonts saved to a flash drive. Well know i went to actually use the font catalog and it shows all my 400 plus fonts but there not usable. I keep getting a window that says to insert disc. Even though I have my flash drive plugged in and also moved a folder with all the fonts to my desk top, it still will not recognize the fonts. I have searched and tried a couple things with no luck. I'm running X6 on Windows 8.
I've found this a most irritating issue already since CS1.I use Pantone colors a lot in my designs and always have the Pantone Solid Coated Color book open in Illustrator. However, no matter how often I save workspace, as soon as I close Illustrator and restart the color book has disappeared from my palette settings and locations. I have to re-open the color book every single time. What is the problem with this? How can all the other windows be saved in the workspace settings and preferences, but not the color books?
And why is this issue not yet addressed, when it's been coming up already since CS1? It's not a computer / preferences file issue.CS1, CS3, CS5 and now CS6 were all installed on a brand new (empty save for operating system) computer.
as the place I work at recently upgraded their PS version to CS6 and basically rendered my Intuos 4 completely useless because of the damn Alt/Ctrl modifier, which seems to control the "drag to create a copy of the layer function" regardless of the tool you're using.
It might be specific for my region, but Alt+Ctrl or Alt Gr modifer is used in order to reach certain keystokes, such as ], [, @, so when by default the brush size function on my wacom is linked to a "[" (alt+ctrl+f windows function), my tablet completely flips out and starts sending a mix of Alt, Ctrl and Alt + Ctrl function controls instead of the [ which I'm trying to use.
Alt + w/e functions work just fine, but I can't use any modifer using the alt+ctrl+w/e combo that involves creating a symbol, even while using the keyboard. For example, I can use the alt+ctrl+z command to undo something, but if I linked my brush tool to a "§", which is invoked by calling the alt+ctrl+m windows command, it will act as a normal ctrl + m command and open the curves window.
I don't know what happened when i opened my autocad it looks like the image below Untitled.jpg
also if i will right click on the drawing space, nothing happens, but below or in the command window, i can, also for example i drew a line, and i want to redo, the "CTRL" function using ctrl+Z is disabled, what happened with this one?
