Paint.NET :: Cleaning Up Edges Of Oval Shaped Pic
May 23, 2012
which tool/s to to create an elliptical frame that I can pick up and paste would be sufficient to get me going.
I have a photo picture which I made 'elliptical'. You can see I have tried to make it elliptical using Word but the edges are messy (see attachment).

trying put create text (or text saved as an image) in a distorted arch shape over top of an oval shaped image.
want text start as larger contract towards the middle and expand to the end.
all text flat on top and the curving would be along the bottom (to go over the oval shaped image).
[might also eventually want to make something similar (shape upside down of this one) to go along bottom of oval image.]
text would be in this bridge shape below:

i have just downloaded a trial version of Paint Shop Pro X6 because I'm looking for a program that will go a good job on oval vignettes with soft (feathered) edges.
I can open the program and select a picture from my files. Through the videos I learned how to identify some of the PSP X6 tools. I click on the Ellipse tool on the lower left in the tool bar. Then it gets weird. Sometimes I'll make an ellipse on the photo and the ellipse outline stays there. Sometimes when I do this an oval is created. Every time an oval is created my picture is the background, and the part of the picture I want is white. It's like it's doing it backwards. I've seen the tutorials about selecting INVERT, but I've had no luck whatsoever with that.
This should be a very simple process, but I'm totally mystified how it works. I used to run a very simple program years ago that Microsoft put out called PictureIt. I really liked that program but it's outdated now and it won't work on the Windows 7 64 bit I'm using. I have tried several programs and Paint Shop Pro X6 seems to be the closest to Pictureit that I can find, but I'm expecting PSP X6 to be more advanced, precise, and better overall. In PictureIt I'd do the exact steps I just mentioned and the area I selected would be the oval picture, the rest was white, and then I feathered the edges. In PSP X6 it's mostly like that, but it's reversed. The picture I want is the background.

I've been using gimp for awhile now and have had great success using itto retouch about a zillion scans of old family photographs. but other than then few things I need in order to do that (paintbrush, clone tool, rotate tool and crop) I am still largely ignorant of how to use gimp. (There's just so much functionality in there, and I'm sure that I don't even have any use for about 90% of it.)
Anyway, a relative just sent me an old old family photo that some nitwit, perhaps a generation or two ago, did some seriously violence to with a pair of scissors. To salvage this one and to make it look presentable I really need to be able to take the scan I have of it and crop it into a oval shape.(Yes, it is a portrait.)
So anyway, how do I do this? It isn't obviously. I already did manage to figure out how to make a selection of the exact size and shape (and location)of oval that I want, and I _did_ make a selection like that... at least I_thought_ that I did... but then when I did crop-to-selection I ended up with the picture cropped to a rectangular shape, where the rectangle in question is, quite apparently, the rectangle which only and exactly contained the oval that I had selected earlier.
I'm sort-of guessing that what I really want is gonna end up being another one of these things that ends up involving multiple layers... yes? I mean of course, what I _really_ want to end up with is an image that _is_ in fact a rectangle, but everything outside of my selected oval has to end up being painted total white (255).
This is a strictly B&W image, BTW... just like all really old family photographs everywhere. How to fade the edges of the oval slowly to white.

I'm trying to figure out a way to clean up the background in a photo I'm working on. Is there a way (tool/plugin) to extend existing material over an area you want to cover up? I want the background to look consistent. I tried cutting and pasting and it looks OK but a little ragged.

I have an old Commodore 64 Disk label that I would like to clean up for re-printing.
method of making this black and white (1 bit depth) while retaining the smooth edges?
I suppose it could be gray scale, if need be as long as it looks clean and mostly b/w.

Installed in the Effects folder as per usual.
When I restarted PDN (several times) and I just can't seem to find where the plugin is. I have been through the Effects and submenus with a fine tooth comb each time but it's not there....

I am attempting to make some combined images to make jewelry for my family but when I cut out an image from one picture and paste into a new layer above a different background, my cut image has white surrounding it, even after I have gone into 1600 zoom and removed all traces of white. I think the cut image is clean then I tell the program to print preview and wow, serious white outline, how to get rid of it? It sure makes my final print really juvenile and cheezy. Using Paint.net v3.5.8. to cut out images. Using ms Word to resize, layer and group images although I seem to have the same issue using paint.net too.

I'm creating a sprite-sheet and therefore need to be able to focus on certain parts of the image, at a time.
This however, is proving surprisingly difficult as I can't figure out if there is any way to pan my view of the image so that any part of its edges is centralized on my screen. Is there any way to do this or are there any relevant plugins available?

Paint Shop Pro X5.
I have some photos of old magazine covers, some of which weren't taken straight on, so that the covers aren't square. With previous versions of Paint Shop Pro, I could drag a corner out until it made the image look square [actually, rectangular], but I can't figure out how to do it with this version.
how to square up the edges of an image?

I am having little diffilculty with rotating a layer and maintaining straight sharp edges to the layer.
Lets say I draw a solid colour rectangle, when I rotate the rectangle the edges become jagged. Is there anyway to avoid this?
I have tried various plug-ins to blur/feather the edges, but I require a sharp finish.
I have attached a sample of one edge.

When you try to select a human face (and maybe body) from a complicated background then seperate it. You'd end up with this face having small parts coming off its edges (ends). You might try to use the eraser to some extent. Still the face or body will not look smooth. How to smooth it?

I'm trying to figure out how to fill this text with smooth edges. The blue part is the font I'm using and the white part is what I filled, using the paint bucket. You can see some jagged/uneven edges between the white and blue. I have tried different blurs, median at low radius, smart blur and several other things. I have even tried those things on just the blue text before filling with the paint bucket and it still shows up like this.

Using X4 on Windows 7. I'm trying to create a series of custom edges to supplement those already supplied in X4. I've created the edge ok and exported it as a frame and it works ok. The problem is selecting it in the dropdown menu under Image/picture frames. Whereas the thumbnails of the supplied edges have grey shading to represent the transparent section of the edge, mine don't, they are just plain white and that makes it difficult to know what edge to select. What have I done wrong? I've opened a couple of the supplied edges and they look similar to mine ie no shading.

I have just started using the Paintshop Pro X4. In fact, I am still using the trial version and I want to use it so I can see if I want to buy it in a couple of weeks. However, I am not really very knowledgeable about computers, computer language and all the technical stuff. So things have to be pretty obvious to me.
Just for practice, I have downloaded a photo of a cherry and a leaf. Not great art, but a nice clear photograph. Of course I want it to be larger than the thumbnail image, so I have blown it up to 6"x6" Now the edge of the cherry, the leaf and the stem are all jagged. I know that is because of the pixels - but I still want to know how to get around it and smooth the edges when I enlarge something.

When you zoom into the picture that's being edited, scrollbars appear but you can scroll only to the edge of the picture, pixel in pixel this way it's pretty hard to capture the edges with selection
How to add a free space to all sides so it will be possible to move edges of the picture to the center of the screen and work with them easily?

I'm, trying to make an animated gif from a png image. I managed to do it, but there's a small problem... when I convert the png to gif (to make the animated gif afterwards) the image gets a strange white border around the edges. I tried to play with the Dithering and Tansparency threshold, but to no avail.
