Lightroom :: Deleting Catalog Backups
Dec 23, 2013
After working in Lightroom 5 (not cc), one is given the choice to take or to take not a backup of the catalogue. After a while you have a lot of catalogues. Is it possible to delete the earlier catalogues so to gain space on the external harddrive?

Each time I try and make a backup of my catalog, LR4 corrupts it.
This all started when I got my first error message after LR4 crashing on me when I attempteped select "Always write changes into XMP" from off to on in the catalog settings window. I of course didn't freak too much because I knew I had a back up. When I went to open the back up I got the corrupt catalog error again. Not to freak just yet because I have my entire Photo drive being backed up each night to another drive via a backup program. This time I made a copy of the LR4 catalog from the backup drive and replace the corrupt one on my main Photo drive. It opens and I feel like a bad *** because all this backup obsession is being put to use and working. I do a bunch of work with new imports and some old projects the rest of my day. Once finished I decide to close LR4 and make a fresh backup of the catalog using LR4 backup feature. To my surprise, it goes corrupt again corrupting the backup and the main catalog. Now I have hours of work wasted because I haven't run the nightly backup yet. I researched methods for fixing a corrupt catalog and have been mostly successful.
This all being said, what is it that causing my catalog to continue to go corrupt when doing the LR4 backup procedure? One additional piece of the story is that after the initial LR4 crash I lost the Photo drive from the desktop. Meaning somehow it unmounted itself. I did a reboot and it was back.

When I converted from LR 4 to LR5 my catalog was and is still called: Lightroom 4 Catalog-2-2. I would prefer it be called Lightroom 5 Catalog. How do I do this?
Now as far as backups go, are they simply copies of my catalog? I have several Backups that I want removed but I am have to be sure I am removing a backup and not the catalog itself? I also prefer that the backup be stored in My Pictures/Lightroom Backups. How do i do this?
Can I remove all backups except for the most current, in this case, 2013-06-27-2100, modified on 08/05/2013?
Why are my backups going into a folder dated June? Shouldn't a backup be created that has the actual date of the backup?

I am using Lightroom 4.3 on a windows 7 64 windows computer with two hard drives. One dedicated to running programs and the larger one for storage of all my other stuff. Well my backups and download backups folders are on the smaller drive and I need to move them to the other larger drive. Can I do this without totally freaking Lightroom out?

I want to remove a catalog from the list of catalogs that shows up when starting Lightroom. I don't want to delete it or mess with it in any way 'cause it's a backup. SOMEHOW (just let it lay there - you can chuckle internally) I managed to grab the backup catalog one time and now its in the list, and every so often if I'm not paying attention I open the wrong one...
So, how do I make that entry in my catalog list go away without actually deleting anything or doing anything to the catalog?

I want to backup my catalog. Specifically, I want to store 2 backups for each catalog.I know how to back them up. I know how to make them backup to a different drive from the catalog. But I'm getting stuck managing the backups.
Catalog backup structure is like this backup folder/date and time/catalog name.lrcat
Say I have a client called "Bob and Sue". I might edit the catalogue every day of the week and take a backup each time - giving me 5 backups. I also have a client called Dick and Jane that I edit on Monday and Wednesday and another called Wendy and Steve that I edit only on Monday.
At the end of the week here is what my backup structure looks like. (I've dropped some times in to make things tidy)
backups/Monday 1100/BobandSue.lrcat
backups/Monday 1115/WendyandSteve.lrcat
backups/Monday 1200/DickandJane.lrcat
backups/Tuesday 1100/BobandSue.lrcat
backups/Monday 0900/DickandJane.lrcat
backups/Wednesday 1100/BobandSue.lrcat
backups/Thursday 1100/BobandSue.lrcat
backups/Friday 1100/BobandSue.lrcat

I am using PSE 12. When I delete photos the program is moving automatically to the bottom or top of my catalog rather than staying in place. So if I am deleting photos 1000 - 1005 it will reload at the bottom or top of my catalog. This is a huge annoyance given I have 12K photos. Other times it simply freezes and crashes.

I deleted some RAW files from my hardrive and while they still appear in lightroom, it says they are missing or unsupported. I backed these files up through lightroom but when i try to access the backups catalog I only get blank screens. Is there a way for me to get some of these files back through the backups? I have a PC and am using Lightroom 4.3 I think.

1. By default, where does LR store:
a. Catalogs (.lrcat)
b. Previews (.lrdata)
c. Backups of Catalogs and Previews
2. Can these locations be changed?
2a. If so, how does one specify where LR will store each of the above?
3. Is there a specific relationship of location the Catalog, the Preview, and the Backups, or any partial combination of those three, must remain in?
3a. If so, what is/are that/those relationships?

I agree with others who have posted that LR needs to add the option of copying files to an external drive whens shooting tethered.
I use NIkon and the camera does not keep a copy in the camera when shooting tethered in LR.
Just makes so much obvious sense for LR to have a save as a copy option as files are brought in during tethered shooting. Why hasn't Adobe implemented this? It's been requested since LR 3, I believe.

How to try to retrieve a corrupt lrcat file. My lrcat file AND its backup are BOTH corrupt, and will not open. They are visible. I have an iMac, OS 10.6, LR 3.3, just upgraded to 3.5 today when I started having trouble accessing LR. I've been away for 6 weeks, but the rest of the computer works fine. There have been almost no changes/writes done to the HD since my last LR backup (and idiotic deletion of additional b.u. catalogs that were only a couple of months old. A trial version of Data Rescue II found erased files on my HD from years ago but it does not find those older LR b.u. erased files.)

i have not downloaded any images into lr5,as i am just finishing setting up all my preferences fAlso how . My catalogue is located in my f drive in a second internal drive on my desktop computer. Where is the best location for my catalogue backup? I figured i would backup the catalogue to this f drive, and also to my new 1tb external drive. I will do this also for my images only on both drives. also how would i set up my external editing info. the custom templates. Can this info be set up later on. Is there a good link as to what this setting is and how to set it up.? also on metadata presets what categories are mandatory to fill out. I am an amateur photographer and do not publish any photos so i do not need a copyright. So I figured i would just fill out the creator section only.

I don't want to have the original files on both laptop and desktop.
I want to make a copy of a Lightroom 3 catalog to put on my laptop so while on the move I can be geo-tagging and keywording to 8000 photographs. I don't want to drag an external drive with me. I just want to be able to work on the catalog metadata and have all the updates/changes stored there (on the laptop)(in the catalog) and then transfer the catalog back to the desktop (to the primary archive) and have all the updates/changes pushed back into the DNG's or the XMP sidecar files alongside the CR2's. These changes would be only keywording and possibly writing GPS data into them….NOT image edits (that would probally require access to the original image files)
As a test, I tried "exporting as catalog", TWO images (with the source images "unavailable"). I flash-drived the resulting catalog to my laptop. I opened the catalog in LR3 and made changes to the metadata. I tried both "saving metadata to file" and "updating DNG previews" (which would be useless anyway since I could not write data back to the missing originals) and also tried doing nothing and just closing LR, then pulling the flashdrive and plugging it into the DESKTOP.(knowing the changes are stored within the catalog itself only) I open the 2 picture catalog in LR and see the keyword updates. Hurrah!
I switch over to the master catalog. All I want to do is import the updated metadata (keywording, contrast, etc…) back into the master catalog and push the data into the original DNG or XMP. On import I select "replace: Metadata and develop settings only" (with or without "preserve old settings" checked) and click import. Voila! NOTHING HAPPENS and the updated keywords are NOT picked up.
I know that the metadata updates were carried out because they showed up when I opened it separately in LR! For some reason they don't seem to making through the import process to the master catalog…

I will be managing a small portion of a client's overall image workflow by updating their web prescence on a regular basis with new work and retagging/uploading old work. I believe this requires the catalog and the image library to be housed on an external hard drive that can travel between the two of us. We are both working on PC's with LR 5.3.
The workflow would look something like this:
Client downloads new images onto external hard drive and imports into LR "ClientCatalog" is created Flags Picks and Creates a Collection from those Picks.Hard drive is handed off to me where I open "ClientCatalog".Make suggested edits to images add detailed tags and metadata upload to various social media sites and websites return hard drive to client
Is there potential problem with this workflow? My assumption is that if everything is housed on the external hard drive then there are no worries about the catalog containing all the latest updates. Are there any "safety protocols" you would add in to this workflow (besides mirroring everythign on another hard drive)?

I'm using Lightroom 1. I tried to merge catalogs by importing a catalog into a master catalog, but there were some problems. The one I noticed immediately was that the collections are not correct. It imported the collections, but for example one collection now has only 4 photos when the originbal had 140? How can I fix that? (Although not necessariy a problem, it seems to have the wrong number of photos imported too. It says the previous import was 3175 photos when it was more like 10,000.)

I had to reinstall an OS in my computer due to a virus. As a result LR 3 in no longer installed. I still have the catalog on a backup disk and have just installed and updated to LR 4.4. What is the best way to merge the V3 catalog with V4 and are there any things I should expect or look out for?

i have an 8 giga LR4 catalog (about 300000 images).just installed the new LR5 and tried openning the LR4 cat in LR 5.it said it needs to upgrade, but in the middle of the prosses i had this messege: "lightroom encountered problems when trying to update the format of the catalog file and cannot use this catalog in this version of LR"
i saw that there is an option to export all my LR4 catalog as a new catalog and than import it into LR5.i haven't tried that yet since i'm worry that i might loose some info. will this process (of exporting and importing) keep all my LR settings? like develop user presets, keywords and collections?

I have downloaded LR5 Upgrade onto my PC (Windows 7). The LR5 new features work. So far the program is working as expected, except that when an image is deleted using LR5, the image disappears from LR5 and appears in the recycle bin as it should, but it does not disappear from my Canon DPP program. LR3 is still on the computer and when an image was deleted using LR3, it always disappeared from both LR3 and Canon DPP. Why won't a deletion with LR5 take the image out of Canon DPP ?

When I delete old copies of LR5's catalog off of my backup external drive, I leave the 3 most current. For some reason the next time I start LR, it cannot find the catalog, and I have to manually point to the backup, since I know that one is current. I'd assume the one in My Pictures is current also, but for some reason I keep getting this error.

I have downloaded & installed the LR 4.4 trial; I've used Photoshop Elements for many years, and am trying Lightroom for the improved capabilities it's supposed to have compared to PSE. According to the website, the downloaded trial is FULLY functional, just like the purchased version.
I take 100s of photos during a typical outing, and I want to use LR to screen/sort/process the photos. If I take 100 photos, I'll probably only keep 10-15 of them in the end. Therefore I need to be able to DELETE the photos with LR. I mean REALLY delete them, from the LR catalog/collections and from my computer hard drive as well. Is this possible? If it is, how is it done easily within LR?
When I press Delete, the photo disappears from the screen I'm in, but it appears the photo was just "removed from the collection"; unfortunately, the photo is still in the directory/folder on my computer hard drive, and it's probably still somewhere within LR as well. I want it deleted. No dialog box opens, which I've heard about in some of the forum posts, so I can't thereby instruct LR to delete from the hard drive as well. How can I do this?
It would be nice if there were a setting or preference somewhere within LR, where I could make the delete key mean DELETE. Does this not exist?

I use Aperture 3 and am thinking of switching to Lightroom 4. I do not store my photos in the Aperture 3 library. Instead I store my photos in my own folder system on an external hard drive and I reference the files in Aperture. This works well for most functions, but when I delete a photo from Aperture, it simply removes the thumbnail and all versions from Aperture, but does not delete the actual photo file on my hard drive. If I want to delete the actual photo file I must click "show file in finder" and manually delete it from the finder window.
Is the process of organizing photos in your own folder system, and deleting unwanted photos, more seemlessly integrated in Lightroom 4?

I'm buying a lot of presets from designers and also create a lot by my own. So not to loose the overview I want to delete those which I don't need. For example all the default ones (Lightroom Effect Presets, Lightroom Video Presets...). I tried to delete the template folder in finder, but then it shows an error at the next startup. If I just delete the subfolders, then the folders within Lightroom still appear on the panel, just the presets within are gone.

I am importing about 20,000 pictures from Flickr. they are all creative commons, and the end result will be the use of approximately 4000 of these in an online sign language dictionary. I use Bulkr to import them and this process imports the tags as well as other information such as the photographers name and url. Many of these photos arrive with hundreds of tags, so that the total number of tags might be 20000 or more. I need to assign my own tags and delete all the tags that the photo arrived with. I use the lightroom batch delete to do this (the little minus sign at the top of the keyword list). i select a keyword, hold down the shift key and scroll down. the problem is that i cannot just scroll down to the bottom of the list. There appear to be unpredictable keywords that cause the shift-select process not to work. if i scroll back up and then carefully scroll part of the way back down, then there will be a point at which shift-select stops working and above that it works. The end result of this is that it takes numerous shift-select-scroll down-select to delete everything so that what should take maybe 2 minutes takes 20 minutes or more.
The problem may be related to foreign language keywords especially chinese characters, but even what looks like a perfectly ordinary keyword can stop it. Two recent examples: travelers cheque and Київ. In all cases, the words can be deleted when i click directly on them. you just cant shift-select THROUGH them.A separate annoyance that i will just grumble about is that i was forced to put these pictures in a separate catalog because there is always the risk that i could manage to delete my own keywords while batch-deleting everyone elses, and there is no simple way that i know of to undo this. with the separate catalog at least i wont delete all the keywords for my own pictures.
