Lightroom :: 3 To 4 - Collection Sets Not Importing?
Apr 1, 2012
Upgrading from LR3 to LR4.
The import from another catalog seems to work with getting all my photos in to LR4, however what doesn't come across in the import are all my Collection Sets and the Collections within. It's not across the board. Some come in, but some don't. I've tried a few different ways of importing and the missing collections are different each time.
I use collection sets and smart collections to organize and work through all my jobs. Not having them cross over to LR4 just doesn't work for me. I've optimized, re-exported, re-imported.
What are the rules for how elements (specifically, collections and other collection sets) are ordered within a collection set?
I was trying to get a collection to appear at the top of the list of items in a collection set, but it seems to get stuffed below all the other collection sets regardless of the name given to the collection.
I upgraded my 3.6 catalogue to LR5 and the photos seem to have imported correctly.
I use LR to publish to Flickr but in LR5 I cannot see my photoset in the publish section. Have I done something wrong or do they just not transfer from 3.6?
I cannot remember whether I used 'Open Catalogue' or 'Import from another catalogue' for upgrading.
Is it possibile to import a collection from a catalog to another ? My main catalog is at home with all the pictures stored on NAS; when I'm abroad often I start to organize the travel pictures in a "temp/local" catalog on notebook. The Import Photos from catalog is fine to import the pictures with their develop setting, but I would like also to import the collection, expecially the custom user sort order I did in the collection (so I think the Export collection as Catalog is not useful).
This evening I wanted to import a series of images from my card reader using LR (just updated to 5.2 from the 5.2RC); I have ~240 images to import. I always have LR set to convert to DNG on import, and also to save a backup of the original raw file (NEF) onto a separate HDD at the same time. LR has always been pretty fast to carry out this process: normally just a few minutes are required for that amount of images (not including rendering previews once the DNGs are imported). However, today it's suddenly become painfully slow - as I type this, it's so far managed to import a mere 58 images, having so far taken about an hour and twenty minutes! Each image is being added one at a time, with a long pause before the next one clocks up in the 'current import' folder. I've never seen such slow performance with LR before.
I wonder if this is a bug connected to the final release of 5.2? I doubt it, as I would have expected to have heard about this by now, but you never know...
I have recently - in the past few days - set up a number (at least 80) of new smart collections that pick up raw images taken at specific focal lengths, as well as another set picking up specific apertures used for each raw shot in the catalogue (unlike the majority of my pre-existing smart collections, these new collections are purely there for interest really - nice to see which focal lengths are the most used for example - but don't serve as an aid to any specific workflow). In short, I've greatly increased the number of smart collections running in my catalogue. Would having a significant number of smart collections slow down the image ingestion process? For example, is LR updating individual smart collections on the fly as images are imported, and thus having to pick through each collection in order to complete the import (I'd always assumed that this would all be added to a central index in the catalogue that the smart collections feed from, but perhaps there are multiple indexes, one for each smart collection)?
I guess the other possible cause could be a corrupt catalogue, although both the catalogue integrity check and optimisation complete without a hitch and everything else seems to be fine.
I'm on Win7 x64, running the LR catalogue and previews from an SSD (with images stored on a separate HDD), with an i7 3770K CPU, 16GB RAM, and an AMD 5850 Radeon graphics card.
I mistakenly created a collection when only one file was highlighted. I made another collection with all the other files I wanted in it, but I can't drag that one file from the filmstrip..
If I specify a smart collection rule that says the source must be a collection matching some pattern, does this only apply to actual collections and exclude collection sets?
I was hoping fo a way to build a rule based on the collection set ... is this possible?
I also tried matching Any Searchable Text set to the collection set name, but that doesn't seem to work...wouldn't all photos in the collection set be associated with that string? Looks like no.
There used to be a way I thought that you could submit a new thread after doing a question search. That seems to be gone.
Is there a way to convert a collection to a smart collection?
I am using NextGEN to export images to WordPress. NextGEN created Publishing collections in Lightroom to match those in my WordPress blog. My problem is that they are not Smart Collections.
I am trying to create a new collection but I find that I do not have a "Set collection as target" (or whatever the correct phrase is, since I don't have it.) I have right clicked and examined all menu options.
I have set up a lot of smart photo sets in the Flick section of the Publish Services panel.
I have a lot of these sets now and they are becoming a bit unwieldly to manage. Is there a way to set up a hierarchy and group a number of sets together? For example could I group together a number of sets that I created in 2012 into a 2012 "folder". I have tried dragging and dropping but this doesn't seem to work.
Opening my tracklog in LR4 Map (on a PC) plots it with a -5 hr offset, evidently UTC time (I'm on Central Daylight), so the images I shot on the outing won't load to the map. The points on the map in LR show the UTC time, whereas the same track opened in Google Maps shows the correct, local times. On October 3, b_gossweiler looked at ImageDesign704's tracklog and responded "I've removed the timezone inidications on the trackpoints and loaded the tracklog successfully into LR." how to get into a .gpx file and remove those timezone indicationst? My tracklog won't open in Windows.
I can have one photo in multiple collections and edit them differently. Right now if I edit in one collection the photo will change in all the collections. For example I want a collection with just Black and White pictures, but I want to still have the same pictures in color in a different collection. This is in LR3.
I have created a collection set in Lightroom 5, and under this set there are 5 collections. I would like to make a slide show of this collection set, and I would like my slide show go in sequence with collection 1 through 5. Each collection has still and video images and I would like to put a text messages in the beginning of each collection segment.
I searched the web, look into few books that I have and I did not see anything dealing on how to make a slide show out of a collection set.
For example, I often export a folder of full-res images, and then go back and do the same images as lo-res with watermarks, that I export to an "email" folder inside the hi-res folder. That way, I email the little ones for clients to peruse, and then send the full-res after they agree to buy. I know I can set up two presets and do them separately, but thought I'd ask.
I keep my photos on an external drive. The drive was named J. It then failed and when reinstalled it was named K. I was able to relike the photos to the new name K drive, however,
I am not able to see the photos that were previously in my collection sets. I see the blank images and the editing icons but no actual images, The photos are in the catalog. How can I relink them to my catalog?
In Lightroom 4, I would like to copy a catalog from machine 1 to machine 2, and while someone else is working on machine 1, I would like to create a collection on machine 2, and then just move that collection back onto machine 1's original catalog. The user on machine 1 is also making collections, so if I just copied the catalog back from machine 2 when I was done, it would destroy the new collections on machine 1, so I think I want to just move the collection I create on machine 2.
I use Aperture but am taking a look at Lightroom. In Aperture, if I have a stack of photos in a project and drag it to an album (similar to a Lightroom collection), the entire stack goes into the album. But in Lightroom, if I drag a stack to a collection, only the top photo goes into the collection. If I expand the stack, select all the photos, and drag them to the collection, then of course they are all in the collection but they become unstacked.
Is there a way to drag a stack to a collection in Lightroom, have the entire stack go into the collection, and have the photos remain stacked? I have tried modifier keys such as Option and Command while dragging the stack but that seems to ahve no effect.
I have a Smart Collection with one of the parameters being "Treatment - is - black and white". It works fine but not when I have "Lightroom B&W presets - B&W Look 5" applied. When I apply this preset the image does not "get pulled" into the Smart Collection. It works fine with the other B&W presets. And when an image is in the Smart Collection - by applying one of the other B&W presets - and then apply B&W Look 5 the image disappears from the Collection. Win 7 64-bit - Lr5 (not 5.2).
I just created a smart collection to take images from a shoot, all of which have a keyword something like
20120403 Sample shoot name
and give me all images from this shoot with 4 or 5 stars. I defined the smart collection with keyword-starting-with that string and rating at least 4. I got all but two of the images. I looked and there was no bug - two images were missing the keyword. When I corrected this, in LR 3 I was accustomed to the dynamic collection's immediate update. However, now in LR 4 (Win 7), the collection didn't update. I tried switching views in Library, such as to the shoot itself, but the collection didn't update. I closed LR and reopened it, and the collection was now updated with all images that should be in it. This appears to be a bug to me.
In "Folder" I can delete file without problem. However, this is not possible from Collection. I wish to be able to delete files from collection as well. Moreover, when I delete a file in the Folder I do the following:
- Select the files to delete - Press "Del" on the keyboard - Click (with my mouse) on "Delete from Disk"
On Mac, I can not use the keyboard to confirm the deletion. It does works on Windows.
till LR 4.1 it was easy to add photos to an existing collection. I just selected photos and dragged+dropped them on the name of the collection. Job done. This seems not to work in LR 4.2 any longer. I can only add photos to a collection by using the context menu of the collection ("Add marked photos to this collection" [most probably the correct English term is different as I work with the German edition of LR 4.2]). Is this supposed to be a feature - or just a bug?
Additionally I can't put photos in an individual order any more. Sorting them by date, name etc - easy! But rearranging the manually doesn't work any longer with my version. Again: feature or bug?
I have created a smart collection of my photos from various folders in preparation for sending to Blurb Booksmart for an annual retropective. All photos are virtual copies and have metadata and exif data. Is there a simple way to arrange the virtual photos in the smart collection for export strictly by date of capture - oldest to most recent - even though they physically live in different folders? What I would like is an "Arrange By Date" option but have not been able to find such.
I shoot for a college and I have smart collection setup to show me my best shots for each sport. There are some images that won't appear in my smart collection and I can't figure out why. All the other sports collection work fine. This collection does show me some of the images, but not all based on my criteria. Yes, I've checked that the criteria is correct.
Upon importing pictures into Lightroom, I create a collection and put the images I want to keep in the collection. This still leaves me with images within my original folder. Is there a way I can view the pictures that are not used in a collection but still in the folder so I can delete them?
If I right-click on a published collection there is a command "Edit Published Collection". In the dialog box that comes up it seems the only thing I can do is rename but there is already a rename in the right-click menu. Hitting EDIT in the dialog seems to do NOTHING. What am I missing on the use of this command. There doesn't seem to be any info on this in a Google search.
