This evening I wanted to import a series of images from my card reader using LR (just updated to 5.2 from the 5.2RC); I have ~240 images to import. I always have LR set to convert to DNG on import, and also to save a backup of the original raw file (NEF) onto a separate HDD at the same time. LR has always been pretty fast to carry out this process: normally just a few minutes are required for that amount of images (not including rendering previews once the DNGs are imported). However, today it's suddenly become painfully slow - as I type this, it's so far managed to import a mere 58 images, having so far taken about an hour and twenty minutes! Each image is being added one at a time, with a long pause before the next one clocks up in the 'current import' folder. I've never seen such slow performance with LR before.
I wonder if this is a bug connected to the final release of 5.2? I doubt it, as I would have expected to have heard about this by now, but you never know...
I have recently - in the past few days - set up a number (at least 80) of new smart collections that pick up raw images taken at specific focal lengths, as well as another set picking up specific apertures used for each raw shot in the catalogue (unlike the majority of my pre-existing smart collections, these new collections are purely there for interest really - nice to see which focal lengths are the most used for example - but don't serve as an aid to any specific workflow). In short, I've greatly increased the number of smart collections running in my catalogue. Would having a significant number of smart collections slow down the image ingestion process? For example, is LR updating individual smart collections on the fly as images are imported, and thus having to pick through each collection in order to complete the import (I'd always assumed that this would all be added to a central index in the catalogue that the smart collections feed from, but perhaps there are multiple indexes, one for each smart collection)?
I guess the other possible cause could be a corrupt catalogue, although both the catalogue integrity check and optimisation complete without a hitch and everything else seems to be fine.
I'm on Win7 x64, running the LR catalogue and previews from an SSD (with images stored on a separate HDD), with an i7 3770K CPU, 16GB RAM, and an AMD 5850 Radeon graphics card.
In the blink of an eye, importing pics all of a sudden has become super slow. It now takes 5x longer to importing off of memory card. Also having issues with plugins I use for B&W & HDR.
Not certain what to do. Seems Catalog got jacked up somehow and no clue what to do to remedy it.
If I specify a smart collection rule that says the source must be a collection matching some pattern, does this only apply to actual collections and exclude collection sets?
I was hoping fo a way to build a rule based on the collection set ... is this possible?
I also tried matching Any Searchable Text set to the collection set name, but that doesn't seem to work...wouldn't all photos in the collection set be associated with that string? Looks like no.
There used to be a way I thought that you could submit a new thread after doing a question search. That seems to be gone.
Is there a way to convert a collection to a smart collection?
I am using NextGEN to export images to WordPress. NextGEN created Publishing collections in Lightroom to match those in my WordPress blog. My problem is that they are not Smart Collections.
Before I got LR4 I developed a series of images (thousands) with Bridge and Photoshop. I've now decided to build a LR catalog of the series.
As I import I want to use the Image # option to rename files, making the whole mess of photos "cleaner" with unique names, etc. Of course I want ot import Raw's and the Tif/Psd images I made along the way. I notice the Image numbering process does NOT recognize the relationship between the raw and edited files. So files (img_123.nef and img_123.tif) become (img-01.nef and img-02.tif). I would prefer the tif file be named img-01.tif so the link between the two remains obvious.
Key to creation date & time? I realize this is a really specific issue, but if the point is to make the series tidier and more coherent it would be a useful feature.
I have a Smart Collection with one of the parameters being "Treatment - is - black and white". It works fine but not when I have "Lightroom B&W presets - B&W Look 5" applied. When I apply this preset the image does not "get pulled" into the Smart Collection. It works fine with the other B&W presets. And when an image is in the Smart Collection - by applying one of the other B&W presets - and then apply B&W Look 5 the image disappears from the Collection. Win 7 64-bit - Lr5 (not 5.2).
I just created a smart collection to take images from a shoot, all of which have a keyword something like
20120403 Sample shoot name
and give me all images from this shoot with 4 or 5 stars. I defined the smart collection with keyword-starting-with that string and rating at least 4. I got all but two of the images. I looked and there was no bug - two images were missing the keyword. When I corrected this, in LR 3 I was accustomed to the dynamic collection's immediate update. However, now in LR 4 (Win 7), the collection didn't update. I tried switching views in Library, such as to the shoot itself, but the collection didn't update. I closed LR and reopened it, and the collection was now updated with all images that should be in it. This appears to be a bug to me.
I have created a smart collection of my photos from various folders in preparation for sending to Blurb Booksmart for an annual retropective. All photos are virtual copies and have metadata and exif data. Is there a simple way to arrange the virtual photos in the smart collection for export strictly by date of capture - oldest to most recent - even though they physically live in different folders? What I would like is an "Arrange By Date" option but have not been able to find such.
I shoot for a college and I have smart collection setup to show me my best shots for each sport. There are some images that won't appear in my smart collection and I can't figure out why. All the other sports collection work fine. This collection does show me some of the images, but not all based on my criteria. Yes, I've checked that the criteria is correct.
I have a smart collection with the only criteria "Is greater than or equal to" 5 stars having changed from "is" 5 stars. I'm gettin 4 copies of each image.
When I go to folder view and all photos I have only one copy each.
How can I make this not-so-smart collection smart?
I created a smart collection with only one rule - Keywords/Contains/'Landscape' - but many other images that do not contain that keyword appear in the collection. It doesn't happen with any other keyword as far as I know. I tried re-creating the collection, re-keywording my images, etc. but with no success.
I watched a tutorial about how to make smart collections using keywords.I spent a couple hours selecting the photos (using the paint can, good tip) and giving about 700 photos the keyword "use". Then I went to make a smart collection and discovered that it only allows you "any text field" with no reference to keywords. Many photos in my huge collection have the letters "use" in their titles. So is there no way to select keywords as a basis for smart collections????
I'd like to create a smart collection of images that have been printed. Is there any way to do this? If not, is there a way to search for images that have been printed?
Separately, one my smart collections screens by edit date so that I can find out what I have worked on recently. However, it also picks up everything I shot and imported recently, even if I haven't edited the images. Is there any way to filter these out?
In LR3 I recently created a Smart Collection from color flagged photos. Now I want to add a few, and delete a few. How? The obvious method are not allowed with SMART Collections.
This seems like an unlikely omission but I cannot find it in the criteria list. "Date" only appears to deal with date, and that is where I would expect to find a capture time criteria. I have a need to separate two events in one day by their time of occurrence (E.g. before/after 2pm).
In LR 3.4 I had no problem applying this smart collection onto a specific folder from the library by simply selecting the collection and then pression CTRL (on windows) while I click the folder in question .. that would filter all those photos that I've edited in LR for that folder.
That isn't the case in LR 4.3.
Right now this smart collection is saying I've got 8683 such photos in the collection, and trying the above method to filter just those edited in a specific folder in the library, simply shows all 8683 photos from my entire library.
I have added keyword tags to all my photos with the names of the people in the picture. I then created a smart collection with two names in it. For example Jessica and Ryan. That collection then returns all pictures that have Jessica or Ryan in them. I am trying to get pictures than contain both Jessica and Ryan, but not other names. The only way I have figured out how to do this is by entering in the other names in the doesn't contain field. That seems like a lot of work when I have many other names, and it must be updated each time I add new keywords. Is there an easier way?
Is there a way you can create a smart collection in Lightroom 4 for stacked images? I have a bunch of stacked images that I use for Panoramas and HDR merging and I would like to create an automatic smart collection for these stacked images.
Is there a way to automatically create smart previews inside a collection? Now, I know how to create a smart collection of only my holiday pictures with a five star rating. That's not the problem, but is there a way that these pictures are automatically transferred into a smart preview?
I have built a smart collection that is for my photos without a title, but the photos with titles are showing up also. The condition I use is "title doesn't contain words." Do I need to add other conditions? I'm not using any of the conditions in the "find bar" at top of Library Module. I'm trying to build my own workflow using Smart Collections.
I flagged a few pictures with the P key, and I want to show them (with other creterias) in a smart collection. So I build a smart collection with the Pick Flag is flagged. But no pictures are showing in my smart collection.
If I do the same with the rejected flag, they appear in the collection...
I'm running Lightroom 4.3, and have set up a publishing service to my revel account. Starting yesterday, I'm having a problem with creating new smart published collections to publish to my revel account. After I enter the filter criteria for the collection and hit "create" I get a "An error occurred while attempting to create a new album." message. I've tried authorizing and reauthorizing my account without any success. I had no problems the last time I created a collection last week, so I'm wondering if it's a server type issue rather than something on my side.
I was hoping to define a tree of (smart) collections to match my folders tree, but coming up with a search criteria to match the folder path is proving difficult at best, impossible at worst.
Ultimately this smart collection criteria is bound for a plugin, but it's the same problem regardless of how ya do it...
"through the years" "kelly through the years" "mike through the years"
I want to create a smart collection which only matches if the keyword is "through the years". I do not want the smart collection to match the other two.
I want to aggregate all of the images I've captured by Capture Month and identify those images that were scanned or have no Capture Date. This question actually attempts to open the door for read access to all of the image metadata and the ability to store some of it in user-identified fields which, somehow, the user will be able to populate.
So - if the date fields (i.e. DateTime Original, DateTime Captured, DateTime Modified ) were broken down into, for example using DateTime Original: Original Year-YYYY, Original Month-MM, Original Day-DD. It may be possible to do this with a redefination of the schema used to define each of the fields.?
