Every time I open an Illustrator file, I get an error that it can't find my links and I have to re-link all of my images. Why is this happening, when I haven't moved either the linked image or the Illustrator file? Even if I save my Illustrator file, then open it right back up this happens.
I'm reconstructing an old document originally developed with PageMaker. I've recreated a half dozen pages hopefully with more uniform techniques. The original line art for the pages was created in AutoCad and some were scans. To bring them into InDesign some of the art is now in psd format and some of the newer art is in Illustrator AI format.
I've noticed that the pages with photoshop art print pretty quickly (about 30 seconds). The ones with Illustrator art take much longer (about 1:30 seconds). They go through a flattening process.
I print these 50 page books on demand and that additional time would add about an hour.
I guess the question is whether this is normal and to be expected or not. If it is I'll likely turn everything into raster before going into InDesign. That, however, seems like quite a bit of extra work. Going from AutoCad to Illustrator (to add stroke) then to PhotoShop to change to raster and then into InDesign seems like a pretty convoluted work flow.
I'm putting together some design specs and I want to create a clickable table of contents that will navigate to a different section of the document. IE. artboard #27
From what I've seen thus far it looks like I can add links but only to websites and they are only clickable in PDF mode.
Is it possible at the very least to make my clickable TOC when converting my document to a PDF? and, is it possible to make it clickable even if it is in .ai format?
I'm using AI CS6 at work and when I place files, they don't show up in the links window and changing the original file does not affect the placed image.
When Illustrator files are created by my colleague on his PC, he drags and drops images from various folders into his Illustrator document. The file opens fine on our other PC's, but not on our Macs. We always get broken links messages which is horribly cumbersome.
I have several .ai files that have linked files that I suddenly can not see in my layout. I checked the links and they are unbroken. Others in the office running the same Illustrator version can open and see them fine. Have I inadvertently change a view setting in my app?
I have an illustrator file which contains linked images. I want the images to link to images in a different folder on a different hard drive. They are the same images, but just in a different location.
I am thinking of temporarily changing the name of the first hard drive (which the images are currently linked to), in order to break the original image links. That way, I can re-open the illustrator file, and when it asks me to find the links, at that point I can direct illustrator towards the links on my other hard drive.
I will then save the file with the images linking to the images on the new hard drive.
At that point I will re-name the first hard drive back to it's original name. Will all of my other illustrator files loose their links if I temporarily change the name of my hard drive, and then change it back to it's original name?
(I have used this technique by changing folder names, and it has worked. But I was afraid to change the name of my Hard Drive because there are a guzillion files on it, and I can't afford for my illustrator files to lose any of their links.)
On several projects there are long lists of images linked in the Illustrator file. I need to find a way to export the names of these links to a spreadsheet for another department to reference. Is there a way to do this (in Illustrator Cs5 or CS6)?
I updated to Illustrator 17.1, and now my image links no longer auto-update after they have been edited in Photoshop. As most should know, this has long been a feature: tweak an image file in Photoshop, save it (same file name), and Illustrator will recognize the image has been edited and ask if you want to update it automatically. Hit 'Return', as 'Okay' is the default dialog button action, and image updated: one step. Without auto-update, user must manually access link palette, select edited image link, and 'Relink' the image ('Update Link' unavailable here now as well): three-plus steps (including identifying and selecting image file after 'Relink').
I have a series of folders and I have linked art and the files they are linked to all mixed up in these folders. My file structure is as such;
myFilesHH01000-01999HH01000-HH01099HH001001.PDF and now I need to change the file structure to this; myFilesHHHH01000-01999HH01000-HH01099HH001001.PDF adding the folder HH breaks the links.
What is the best way to identify the broken link and change its path with JSX?
I am working on a file that has some shapes with gaussian blurs. Everything appears fine until I save it and reopen the file to see that each of the objects with a blur has been converted to an embedded link as a raster image. Is there a setting that I need to change to preserve the vector shapes with the blur effects?
I'm trying to find a way to get the links and link statuses in Adobe Illustrator. It doesn't seem to be at all similar to InDesign DOM.
What I'd like to be able to do is check whether a file has a missing link. I have been able to trace it to a "placedItem" which is inherently a "pageItem". So is it possible to find the link status? Been going through the DOM for about a half hour now and still can't find it.
app.documents[0].placedItems[0] <--- How to get link status?
When I open the .AI I noticed that the reference to the visuals is under a %DocumentFiles section: %%DocumentFiles:/Volumes/Storage/Projects/Client/AAA001/visuals/retouc hed.psd %%+/Volumes/Storage/Projects/Client/AAA001/visuals/flattened.jpg
I need to replace "/Volumes/Storage/Projects" with "/Volumes/Projects". (There are some more complex replacements I need, but let's start here.)
When I click "Edit Original" with a jpeg selected in the links panel it opens Microsoft Paint! In Windows (7) the file association is Windows Picture Viewer (NOT Paint!) and in Bridge it is associated with Photoshop CC. In InDesign we have the option of choosing which program to edit linked files with. In Illustrator we are stuck with the astounding Paint! Why?? 17 versions and this still bugs me!
I was watching a tutorial about PSE 11 and then noticed that under my photo in the organizer I do not see the date, time, & star option. Do I have to turn something on to see them. Also I do not see a place under the photos to put a caption. I'm using a mac book pro.
I was wondering if it's possible to save an AI file as both an AI file & PDF file at the same time??
Where i work, we always need to save an AI file and a PDF file. So is there a way I can set up my Illustrator so everytime i save something, it'll save the AI file and automatically create the PDF too? ..
Or is there no way around .... Save as: Illustrator file. / Save as: PDF file in two separate actions?.
I just started using Illustrator CS 5.1 on a new laptop running Windows 7. (I have used it for over a year on an older computer running Windows XP with no problem). For the first month or so on Windows 7 it worked ok (saving was somewhat slow) but suddenly it freezes every time I save - sometimes it will eventually save - after 5-7 minutes - yes, I timed it...
I'm currently on CS6 but I'm looking for a solution that can also work on CS5 for a co-worker.
Having multiple artboards has been established since CS4 and I have yet to see an official way of resizing multiple artboards, if anything there should at least be a plug-in.
As great of a feature it is, it seems a little short sited. If one has multiple artboards one should be able to manage multiple artboards, right?
I totally love having multiple artboards but I should be able to resize and manage multiple artboards as well. This is great for building icon sets but how can I resize the set all at once?
I was considering trying to do an action but odds are I still would have to select an artboard one by one to do which doesn't save much time if you have like 30 artboards to apply this to. I don't even see a batch render for artboards and Photoshop has that for its files.
I'm well aware of the solution that is displayed here: [URL]
I need to have my file in EPS, so I need to avoid transparency or avoid vector illustration because some part of the image rasterize. I still didn't find a way, how to make it, but I can see illustrations, which are vectors and saved in EPS and the effect drawned there MUST be done with transparency.
I created a simple file, where there is a gradient on the background in layer Bg nad another layer Glow with circles. The circles are made by gradient which goes from solid colour to a fully transparent one, so it can join the Bg nicely.
This is how the circles' gradient looks like.
This is the scene.
When I want to save it I select all the transparent objects and all the objects which touch the transparent one. In this case, it is everything in the scene. Then I press Flatten transparency and apply it with following setting. Anyway, every setting (higher ppi) I tried failed.
The result: Illustration full of images -> rasterized -> failed.
Just for example take this illustration - it had to been done with transparency, but it is still a vector graphics! [URL]
The inital thread was created because Adobe Illustrator from CS6, downloaded via the Creative Cloud, quits unexpectedly upon launch everytime. However, all of the other desktop apps I downloaded work perfectly.
I tried every step suggested in the thread, however none of the solutions worked. I restarted my computer afterwards and it still does not work.
I'm programming a tool handling with width profile and width markers. I would like to see a preview while I'm editing the width marker values (in real time).
I'm editing the width of strokes during dragging the mouse in small steps. Each mouse drag event means a small adaption of the widths. The problem is, that I do not see the change during I drag the mouse. I see the change after I release the mouse. Is it possible to update the artwork during dragging the mouse? So that I see the art object changing during I drag the mouse.
The problem is: From within Windows Explorer, I can only open 1 Illustrator file at a time. To get a different file to open, I either have to drag and drop the second file into the tabs under the menubar, or I need to quit Illustrator and re-open it. Also, I can not open additional files from Explorer one-at-a-time if one is already open.
Quirks:
If I go to File -> Open I can select multiple files from within the Open File dialogue window and they open just fine. but i can't do it from within windows explorer. This used to work and now it doesn't.
Seriously? 137 views and no replies? No one has run into this before?
Windows 7 SP1, Illustrator CS6.The end users spends 7 hours of their 8 hours in Illustrator. As part of the job, they have to have over 40 different files open at the same time because they are working on several jobs at the same time as well as working forward. So the answer is not "they have to close some files". This, unfortunately, is not an option. We recently upgraded them to CS6. They said that version CS5 was fine and didn't crash like this. But Illustrator CS6 crashes on them, closes itself, and obviously they lose all unsaved changes (saving the changes isn't a choice either, because the files are shared and have to stay original). The only modification we've done to the program is to UNcheck "Append" in the preferences. This happens on all 3 computers for all 3 users, so I don't believe it to be end-user related. Any way to get Illustrator to stop crashing? Is there a specific limit on the number of files that can be open?

Is it possible to release all compound paths in an illustration at the same time (and if so - how)?
I receive drawings from engineering in either PDF or CGM format, which I edit in Illustrator and save as AI. I have to release compound paths in order to delete specific parts of the drawing.
This isn't difficult, but it is very time-consuming because the CGM(or PDF)-to-Illustrator conversion results in quite a few compound paths.
If I copy object and text at the same time, it will only paste the text and the object is disappear, but it's no problem if I copy them separately. Besides, If I copy multiple text objects, they will be combined to 1 text object and the font will be changed when I paste.
When using the rotate tool, you used to be able to use the hand tool even when the Rotate dialogue box was up. Is there a way to get that back?
I make Mandalas [URL] and work from the center out. This poster is 18"x24" so once I start to get to the outer edge, I'm zoomed into the center at 6400% so I can get my crosshairs as precise as I can, then enter a number (45 degrees, 20 degrees, etc.). Clicking Preview works, but if you're zoomed in and the object is out of view, you have to guess where it's going. In CS5, you could press down the space bar and use the Hand Tool even while the dialog box was up.
