Illustrator :: How To Merge Lines And Shapes In Order To Create One Final Shape

Nov 9, 2013

I'm trying to create a star icon with lines through it. I used the star shape builder tool and then the line segment tool, but the lines are not being recognised as part of the star shape. For example, when I try to turn the star, the lines remain in the same place. This is pretty much exactly what I am trying to make, but I can't form the segments into one cohesive, editable shape.

Photoshop :: Merge Many Shapes And Letterings To One Shape?

Jun 18, 2009

I designed a logo, that contains of several shapes and letterings on different layers. Now I'd like to export this logo as a vector based file, and I also want to create a stamp shape (or how is it called?) of it inside photoshop, so I can easily paint the logo with a single click and resize/transform it wherever I am.

How do I do that best? I guess I'll have to merge the different layers somehow, but how do I do that without rasterizing them?

Illustrator :: Merge Complex Shapes From Transparency?

Sep 3, 2012

I am using Illustrator 16.0.1.

I have extracted a svg model from a PDF map, which leaves me with a lot of complex shapes that are not optimised.

For example, these shapes are all composed of a lot of unneeded sub shapes. When trying to merge them together via Pathfinder > Merge, I get :

Is there a way to clean up those shapes from transparency, to get the smallest possible amount of points?

Illustrator :: Create Or Export Logo In CS5 With Alpha Channel To Use In Final Cut Pro 6?

Sep 14, 2013

I have created a logo using Illustrator CS5 and need to import it into a video sequence in Final Cut Pro 6.  The logo has a transparent background.  It seems FCP 6 will import both native .ai files as well as .tiff files, but when I open them in FCP 6, the alpha channel (transparent background) is no longer there; there is just the logo over a white background.

Photoshop :: Merge To HDR Pro Preview And Final Result Very Different

Oct 14, 2012

I'm using CS5 and beginning to use HDR.  When I merge to HDR pro and make adjustments to images the preview window is extremely different from the final image.  I'm merging original camera raw images from a Nikon D200.  Workflow in ACR is set to 16bit.  Output from HDR pro is also 16bit.  I adjust using the preview window, but after final processing the resulting image is grossly different, much more saturated and more vibrant among other differences.

Illustrator :: Changing Node Order In Closed Shape?

Setting a stroke profile (variable line width) on a closed shape changes the stroke width from narrow to wide. I would like to have the "wide" width in a different place and a "narrow" width somewhere else. I guess a way to do this would be to change the node orders of the closed shape?

I'm on a Mac running Snow Leopard: Using either Illustrator CS5 or CC: when creating a shape with a stroke, using the variable line width tool (which I love!), saving the file. When I re-open the file the stroke has become a shape itself, with many points, and the fill has become a shape with no stroke!?

Illustrator :: Add Shapes Inside Outlined Shape?

Feb 21, 2013

I have created the outline of a snake using the pen tool.  The shape is closed.  I want to add scales that do not overlap and are snug against the outline wall.  Im sure I am missing something incredibly simple.  I tried to create anchor points along the outline and use the pen tool to connection the anchor points but doing so would delete the anchor points.  Each scale will be different colors and shape and they need to all be snug together.

Illustrator :: Breaking Large Shape Into Several Smaller Shapes?

Jun 5, 2012

I have this object (shape path) that is like a continous loop or ribbon. see below:

I would like to break it into two seperate shapes: a top half, and bottom half. I need to remove some between them though.

Unfortunately, I cannot make the scissor tool, knife tool or cut path tool work correctly. It just doesn't seem to work, no matter whether I have anchor points selected or not.

I have also tried duplicating the object and trying to delete anchor points until I'm left with one of the shapes. However, because of the ordering of anchor points, I end up with a blue line connecting one end of the object to the other.

Illustrator :: Align Small Arc To Corner To Merge It Into Larger Shape

Mar 8, 2013

I'm trying to use Smart Guides to align a small arc to a corner so I can merge it into a larger shape. Well, I've grabbed my arc on one of the anchor points and I drag it to the larger shape's path but no snapping, no "path" or "intersection" labels show up. I've got all the options for Smart Guides checked off and I've got Snap to Point enabled but still no luck. It makes precise alignment a guessing game.

Illustrator :: How To Turn Lines Into Shapes

Mar 11, 2014

I'm designing a badge for my cricket team and have created a design using a shield shape which I've divided into four quarters with a horizontal and a vertical line.  How do I split the shape so I can colour the individual quarters?  There are similar areas of the design made up of lines that I want to colour individually.  I guess the question is, if I created a square shape by drawing four separate lines, how do I join the lines in order to fill the square shape with colour?

Illustrator :: And Way To Snap To Tangents Of Lines / Shapes?

Sep 24, 2012

I think there used to be a free script/plugin for illustrator but the company has been bought out and now is working on something else.

Anyway, the images below show what I would like.

The first, I'd like both the tangent points of the square/triangle snap to that of the cirles. [URL] ....

The second, it's already snapped to the bottom as it's horizontal (verticle obviously also snaps) but the angle doesn't. [URL] .....

I would not like to just zoom in and guess as closely as possible as there would always be 2 vertices which I wouldn't want.

Illustrator :: Create Transparent Stroke Above Other Shapes?

Aug 14, 2012

What I'm trying to do is give the blue box a transparent stroke that will "cut through" the red boxes and show the background underneath, whatever that may be ...white, another color, or a photo.

I can easily achieve this when I give it a white stroke. It'll look like this:

When I change to a background color other than white or even a photo however, I end up with this problem:

How do I make it so that I have a transparent border (not white) around the blue box? Which effectively cuts a "transparent stroke" (space) between the parts where the blue and red boxes intersect?

Illustrator :: How To Create Clipping Masks With Shapes And Text

Jun 11, 2013

I am new to Illustrator and am currently attempting to learn it. I am creating a logo that has text and has a shape that goes through the text to make the text appear as if it has claw marks in it.

I have two layers. The layer with the shape "claw" marks, and a layer with the text. The shape layer is currently above and the text layer is currently below. If I select both layers and click on Make Clipping Mask it has the text displayed within the little claw marks, how do I reverse that? Because when I try to change the order of the layers it doesn't clip anything?

Illustrator :: Possible To Create Vector Objects As Compound Shapes

Mar 19, 2014

I'd like to start utilizing Illustrator more frequently for web and user interface design projects, but I still like taking everything into Photoshop for final rendering and compositing (and the simple fact that most developers want psds, not ai files). However, I find that the only way to successfully transfer all of the vector artwork from Illustrator and preserve it as vector objects in Photoshop (when exporting) is to manually convert every individual vector object in Illustrator to a Compound Shape (by selecting the shape and clicking Make Compound Shape from the Pathfinder palette menu). This can be very tedious if it has to be done after the design is complete, and very inefficient if you convert every object as you draw it.

Is there a way to set Illustrator to automatically create every vector object drawn as a Compound Shape without having to manually convert it?

Adobe Illustrator allows you to export your Illustrator document as a Photoshop document. However, Compound Paths (not Compound Shapes - see this article for not-so-great explanations comparing the two) – which is the default attribute applied to all of Illustrator's basic vector objects – do not convert into vector objects when the exported document is opened in Photoshop. Rather, the vector objects drawn in Illustrator get flattened into raster layers in Photoshop, making them poor candidates for refining the design in Photoshop.

I've tried several options on the pathfinder panel. There's got to be an easier way than recreating the whole shape with the pen tool.

Illustrator :: Stacking Order Not Controlling Order In Which Squares Are Arranged?

Mar 6, 2013

Here I have several concentric squares in an uninterrupted stack.I moved the topmost (small orange) one vertically.I then went to the Alignment panel, selected all the squares and clicked on the one I moved. Then I clicked on Vertical Distribute Center.

The right hand picture shows what happened. One of the squares (that big orange one) near the bottom of the stack shot up so that its centre was above the centre of the topmost one in the stack. The centres are evenly distributed but why is the stacking order not controlling the order in which the squares are arranged?

Fortunately the positioning of that big orange square was easy to correct, but something tells me this is not the way things are supposed to happen.Seemingly this does not always happen. I have tried the method on several stacks. Some were o.k., others showed similar behaviour to the above.
