Illustrator :: Combining Lines Into Solid Shape?
Mar 6, 2014
I'm trying to create a solid black background for a logo i'm working on. From the image you can see, i'm wanting the space between the lines filled to create a solid black background behind the stripes in the logo. As well as the space between the circle and the inner line.
I've tried several options on the pathfinder panel. There's got to be an easier way than recreating the whole shape with the pen tool.

I have a stencil for Thermal Pads and I need to print it from an epilog zing printer. There are outlines of boxes, some with curved edges and some without. The boxes orinially started with spacing between them, but we need to illiminate the spacing so that we can fit more stenciles on one piece of material. The problem is that when I print the stencil the laser will cut out edges that touch twice, which causes the material to burn from the laser. Is there a way to combine these lines in a way that isn't just grouping or joining them as the laser will still recognize two lines not just one as it appears to look like once joined.

I am trying to make a shape made from the blob tool made into hafltones. I do not want it as a gradient, just equal sized halftones throughout the shape. Is this possible?
When I do it using Effects/pixilate/color haltone it makes multiple colored halftones, whereas I just want one color. And when I change the channel's it comes up with similar results.

I have created a compound path in illustrator and when I try to make a clipping mask, rather than revealing the image behind the path, the shape is filled with solid white. I am able to successfully make the mask using one shape or the other, but once I create the compound path, I just get this white fill.
I am in CS5 on Mac OS X (Snow Leopard). See screenshots below.
The two shapes still separated.
The compound path.
After I make the clipping mask.

I have a vector map of the United States that I am currently trying to shade in for the election. I would like to achieve an effect similar to that shown here with the lines going through the red and blue states - [URL] How would I go about doing that? I'm a novice at Illustrator and only know the basics of filling with solid colors. I have CS6 if that makes a difference.

I would like to create a wavy line (the zigzag feature is not exactly what I need here) to outline a shape and then fill it with a solid color.
This is approx what I want; however the undulation needs to be more round and less peaked.

I am really new to illustrator and I need to know the answer to this question fast. If I made a weird shape with 5 different lines how would I fill it in? Nothing really happens when I select the lines and then select a color.

I know that I can use a clipping mask, but I prefer not to have the extra shape of a clipping mask. I've tried all of the Pathfinder commands and those don't work. The Shape Builder tool is tedious for this. An example is the circle with lines extending past the circle in the illustration below. Is there an easy way to delete just the portions of the lines that extend past the circle and leave those inside the circle?

I'm trying to create a star icon with lines through it. I used the star shape builder tool and then the line segment tool, but the lines are not being recognised as part of the star shape. For example, when I try to turn the star, the lines remain in the same place. This is pretty much exactly what I am trying to make, but I can't form the segments into one cohesive, editable shape.

I'm working on a program that requires me to analyze a series of 3D coordinates (which describe the start and end points of individual lines) and combine those points that are collinear (there are lots of smaller line segments, some of which are co-linear and overlapping in space) into one single line.
how to analyze these points to find out which ones can be combined. For example, I might have 6 lines, 3 are separate and have their own specific orientation, but 3 are overlapping and in the same direction (look as a single line on the screen). I'd like to modify my point list so that it describes 4 lines... (the 3 individual ones and one which combines the 3 overlapping lines).

I have a master shape file that contains parcel ID, owner, tax info., etc. I have another file ( access 2003 -open to better file format suggestions-) which contains parcel ID and a "yes" or " no" entry for whether or not the parcel needs a new water meter. All I want to do is add the water meter information into the other shape file. This would create one shape file with one table with all the information that I need.
Ultimately I will use the information to do a map query and find out spatially where i need new water meters.
Right now i have the master shape file connected though the “Connect to Data” feature. I also have the new data added to the drawing though the Data sources------>attach under the “Map Explorer” Task pane. I attached access file (ver. 2003 .mdb) which has two columns “Parcel ID” and “Meter”.
I right click on the shape file under the display manager and select”Create a Join;” however my water meter table is not listed as an option. Will this not work?
Plan B - I tried to Create and connect to the access file as an ODBC connection. Followed this guy’s directions to a T [URL]. But when i populate my table under the fdo connection the column headings exist ( “parcel ID” and “Meter”) but the actual data is missing. Am I missing something important?
Note: I am running c3d 2012 on a Win 7 64 Bit machine. I also removed office 32 bit apps and installed 64 bit apps to see if that would solve the problem. No go.

I'm creating a bin model. I've hollowed it out, the thickness of the bin tapers from top to bottom. I have selected the edges at the bottom of the bin and just want to connect these to form a solid shape which can be the base of the bin. At the moment it's hollow all the way through.
When I select these edges, then select 'border' and 'cap', nothing happens. How do I make this selection into a simple circular base?

I have an irregular 3D solid, a slab with an opening, and I want its coordinates. However, Autocad provides coordinates only for a simple 3D face.
I plan to use 'Xedges' to get its all edges first, and then get coordinates of these lines.

I'm trying to do some pixel art, and whenever I use a tool that isn't just the pencil tool, it makes its own weird shading along my selection. Like, if I make a diagonal line with black, fills in random gray above and below the line between the two points I click. Or if I make a non filled circle, it fills in shading around the edges. All this is with one pixel thickness How do I just make it the color I've picked from the color picker without any extra color interpolations along the way?

In other words, I have a green patterned background, and I want to add a transparent triangle (which should then be the green background by making it transparent) over a white layer. To sum it up, I want the triangle to be filled in with the green patterned background over the white layer. How do I do this?

how can I "remove" the extrusion from a 3d object?
I attached the .dwg to be more easily understood...(hopefully...)
11 MaTiuBA Bank ohne AL.dwg
So, I drew the basic shape, made an extrusion. This created the 3d solid. Now I want to make changes to the basic shape. For this I need to go back to the basic shape without the extrusion...

i'm applying an extrude modifier to a simple spline shape, and i am accustomed to the extrude modifier generating a solid 3d object in the shape of the spline, if the spline is a closed shape.
however, in this case, the extrude modifier is generating just a 3d outline based on the spline's shape...
i can't figure out why i'm not getting a solid 3d object since the spline is closed (i checked all the vertices).
file is attached (the spline in question is named "upper side section")

I have a set of 8 coordinates that outline a pit. I have been asked to calculate it's volume. I have input the coordinates, and have produced a 3D image of the pit. I was hoping to be able to convert the object (the pit) that I have created to a solid, so I could then determine the volume, although it is proving to be difficult.
how I could calculate the volume of this pit?

Any routine that would allow you to cut out an odd shape from a solid with the profile of a polyline? The goal would be to have all the pieces that are left, not subtract them out..

I have just been updated to CC at work and I am having all sorts of issues. But the two main pressing ones are:
1. When I save, it keeps "not responding". Sometimes it crashes, sometimes it doesn't. When it does, I lose everything. It takes anywhere from 1 - 5 minutes to save. I thought it was an issue with a large file, but it does it to me in a one page file with only one photo in it as well.
2. Layers. This is the killer right here. Again, I thought this was a capatability issue when using old files, but it has proved me wrong. As I create layers and new artwork, it works fine. However, once I save and re-open the file, all the artwork has been combined to a single layer and then I have to dig it all out to do anything to it, only to have it do the same thing the next time I repoen the file.
Is it me? Is it default settings somewhere in CC? I have major deadlines that I think I am going to miss if things keep continueing the way they are.
System Specs:
Illustrator CC 16.0.3 (Tried to update to 17 and it said everything was up to date, twice)
Windows 7
Dell Optiplex 7010 with Core i7 and brand new AMD video card.

I'm using CS3 on a Mac.
I outlined my text and subtracted it (and the tree image) from the black background. When I did this both appear thinner - particularly the tree.
If I then take the original version and the new subtracted version, and view them both overlayed one on top of the other in wire frame (outline) mode, there is no difference in the actual lines.
It seems to be a problem with the way illustrator previews the images. This wouldn't concern me, but when I export the file as a jpeg, the lines also appear thinner in the export.
I can create a manual solution by offsetting the path before subtracting, but this isn't ideal.
