Illustrator :: How To Fill Area Where Shapes Overlap
Nov 2, 2012
I am recently getting back into using Illustrator.
I am trying to draw 2 shapes, let's say 2 circles, fill them w/colors, then have them overlap each other.
The part where they overlap creates a DIFFERENT shape. I want to fill that 3rd shapew/a different color. How do I select that 3rd shape area and fill out?

I have been using Illustrator for a couple of years now and from time to time I encounter very strange behavior when manipulating a vector shape.I have a current example here where I simply want to create a combined shape using the pathfinder tool:
As you can see, the generated shape (red) does not cover the original shape (green). When I use the path selection tool, I am able to reposition the first anchor but when I do the same for the lower anchor as well the entire shape is replaces a few pixel to the left. Even using the "align" tool afterwards is not useful. It seems impossible to make the red shape cover the green one.

I'm having problems creating pattern swatches in cs6, because I can't seem to solve the problem of the background overlapping and hiding foreground shapes. I can make patterns without a background and I think I've worked out how to prevent the problem with a simple grid, but when I make a brick tile pattern, whichever overlap options I choose, at least one of the foreground shapes gets partly obscured by the overlapping background. I'm used to making seamless patterns in previous versions of Illustrator, by using guides and grids, then defining the pattern using a background rectangle but this option doesn't seem to be available in CS6, so if I can't solve the problem, it's back to CS5.

Surprisingly i can't find any mention of this anywhere on the intertubes - very often I have a placed (photoshop/tiff) graphic with transparent background overlaying (on top of) a spot color area, the spot color prints out completely different from how it should be (and how it is on non-overlapped areas).
I've tried everything i can think of, including making an opacity mask to 'hide' the supposedly transpararent areas of the placed grahic. I know a clipping path might work, but some art is too complex for that.

In Illustrator CS4:
I need to fill 20 circles with one common grad fill... so that the 1st circle is dark to the 20th as lightest (NOT each individual circle getting it's own gradient).

An Area Text Object is created...
the Transform Effect is applied to it (a rotation).
The text rotates, but the fill disappears...
whether it's the original object or if copies are added.

see xcf attachment...
I used a heart fill pattern of the right 75% of the picture and the left 75% of the picture is selected overlapping the first fill in the background... I want to fill the selected background area with a flame fill pattern where it overlaps the selected portion of the heart pattern as well as the transparent area... 'overlay' looks better but Gimp is FAILING to fill the transparent areas, it ONLY fills the overlapped heart pattern portion of the selected content!!! I even tried filling the transparent area with 'white' then filling the selected area, but it STILL ONLY wants to overlay fill the heart pattern, it STILL leaves the rest alone!!! it doesn't matter if the background is white or transparent, it leaves that alone and ONLY fills the heart pattern area of selected portion of the image!!!

I am using the Bloc Theme from YooThemes for my webpage: [URL]....
I'm looking to fill in those 3 colors with three colors that I have designed myself.
I used the eyedropper to pick up colors from other files and tried to fill the shapes. No matter what I've done - even using the pen tool to close in the shape the fill goes all over the whole page.
When I fill in the colors how can I also keep the 3-D effect?

For some reason, all of a sudden when I go to make a shape and choose a color, it does not fill. I noticed that the Style box to the right of the color box on the top bar had a white box with a red line through it. I then chose Simple Outer from the drop down box and it still will not fill. I am using Elements 10.

I'm trying to find the best way to fill a shape with other shapes( a with a specific size), without overlaping, like the example below.
My main concerns are the spacing between the circles, the positioning should be as paralel to the the outside shapes as possible, and the size of the circles ( or any other necessary shape).
I'm doing this by hand sometimes with 900 circles. is there a fast way to this? do you know any macro/plugin to make the task easier?

I am not a power user but have used CorelDraw since ver 8. My question is why I cannot fill shapes like the one provided whether I create them in Draw, or import them as dwg or dxf into Draw. It's interesting that I can fill this shape in DesignCad (the source of the dwg-dxf files) but not in Corel. Of course, the project I'm working on needs the other touches that Draw provides and DesignCad doesn't.

I am working on a graphic that has a circle with many small circles around it. All the circles are on seperate layers and were made with the shape tool. How can I change the color in all the small cicles at once? Isn't there a way to chage the attributes of multiple shapes at one time? I swear I saw this somewhere in my books but cannot find it now.

Any good technique for applying gradual, linear perspective to textures used to fill shapes? An example will make my question much clearer (the attached drawing, both in JPG and .XAR).
The top shape is a carpet (or something) with a bitmap fill applied. I want to draw it curled, as in the bottom shape--the texture doesn't follow the contour of the object (as expected, since this isn't a 3D modelling program).
But is there some way to simulate the gradual rotation and foreshortening of a texture, to make folds and curls in fabric look more realistic?

I have an object that I applied Gaussian blur to and it extends the boundaries. It is on top of a tan object, I need to "shave" the excess blur off to make it a clean and line up with my tan object. What is the most efficient way to this. In PS I would creat a selection around the tan object, then invert the selection and hit delete on the blur layer. what is the equivalent to that in AI?

I used to be able to hatch most anything without problem. Now with Civil 3d 2011 anything more complex that a box or a circle AutoCAD will not find the boundary even when the quick preview seems to find a boundary.
I've tried overlapping the lines and then trimming. I've tried extending to the other lines. I've tried setting the tolerance to 1/2". I've checked that the lines are snapped to endpoints and meet cleanly.
In testing I've found that sometimes it will find the boundary, and other times it will not even when nothing has changed? Noticing that they have to try multiple times and methods to get C3D 2011 to hatch correctly?
The attached file shows the different results (boundaries extracted from successful hatches) that I'm seeing, and sometimes can't find a boundary at all, sometimes it does. Seems to get different results when I regent and at different zooms (not sure if that's the correct terminology?).

I have a layer with 3 objects. (this is not a font). The S, E and the XY are unique objects, and i wanted to apply two strokes to it. First a black stroke and then a blue one.
My issue here is that the strokes at the red marked points are overlapping to other objects.
Is there a possibility that the strokes don't overlap into the other objects? can i somehow "merge" the 3 objects to one so the overlapping doesn't occur?

it's regarding this image. Originally it was very dirty in the background (still is if you look at the striped mountains and cottage), and I've tried making it white by playing around a bit with the curve adjustments. Obviously the results weren't as white as I wanted them to be, so I decided to dodge some areas (on the other parts of this picture which I didn't include). Later on I decided to pick up the bucket tool.
It works very well, but now I'm having this problem. If you look at the red ground, it's all dotted. However, the bucket tool filled up some of these dots too, making the ground very thin.what I can do about this?how I can make the background white (the quicker the method the better!) in case the curve adjustment settings doesn't properly work?

How to fill an area with a colour in Xara 6, when that space is surrounded by different 'objects'?
So say I drew 3 separate lines to form a triangle. How can I fill that triangle with a colour? If I select the Fill Tool and choose a colour, then click in the centre of the triangle nothing happens.
If I were to do the same thing in Illustrator then it would simply create a new shape that fitted the space.
Perhaps this is not possible? Such a simple thing though, I feel I must be missing something. Is it perhaps available on Xara 7?

bg color of combined shape.jpg
I am creating some geometric patters with the transform tool. Basically a shape is rotated about a center point. When the shapes are combined they create some quick interesting shapes. However, is there a way to fill in the gaps in the combined shape automatically, without having to manually use the smart fill tool?
Breaking the shape apart does not work, because the geometric pattern is based on the overlaps. I included a jpg of what I am doing to circumvent the manual smart fill, but is there an easier way, especially where the geometric patterns become very complex.
I can take the object, trim from a background, break apart that trimmed shape, then color it, or group or shape into a single curve, then align and group with the original object. But just looking to see if there is another easier way.
