Illustrator :: How To Calculate Ratios From The Actual Sizes
Mar 15, 2013
I am doing design exhibitions with interior design. The interior designer sends me an AutoCAD file. The AutoCAD can calculate ratios from the actual sizes, how about the Illustrator? Can it calculate in the same way? For example, draw the line 2 meters from ratio 1:30. Now, we have to compare and calculate length in manual way which is inconvenience for us.

When using the type tool in Illustrator, setting the font size to 150mm give me a character size of 107,373mm and in the H value window it says the size is 185,15mm wich mean that none of the sizes is actually correct when using text and for me that is usless because I get drawings with spesific text hight and length.

is there a way to make it so everything that appears on the artboard is hidden/invisible, and have it so my vector shapes/images only appear inside rectangle/panels?
As of now, if I am to create a comic using the pen tool, and some parts of the vector are outside the rectangles (panels) I made, I would either have to use the knife tool to cut off the vectors outside, or hide the vectors outside the panels with white rectangles (since my artboard is white).

I need to export a Illustrator icon in various different resolutions e.g. 16x16, 64x64, 256x256 etc.
I wrote a simple script for this purpose which is calculating the scalefactor out of the image width and the desired resolution.
The scale factor is calculated by this simple formular:
var bounds = item.visibleBounds;
var width = bounds[2] - bounds[0];
var scaleFactor = 100.0 * desiredPixelWidth / width;
The resulting images are correct for small images from 16px to 512px but for larger images the resulting images are too big:
desiredWidth resultingWidth1024102520482050409641006000600680008008(the calculated value for width is 512.5)
I have to multiply the scaleFactor with a correctionFactor of ~0.999 to get correct results:
var bounds = item.visibleBounds;
var width = bounds[2] - bounds[0];
var scaleFactor = 99.9 * desiredPixelWidth / width;
Why the correctionFactor has to be applied and what the correct value is.

I work at a university and have logos shared with me from other designers, most of which are working on Macs and I'm working on a PC. When I open the logo and select all, the size displayed is 227.5417 inches x 227.5417 inches. The last one I received, the actual size of the logo was 2 inches x 1.75 inches. How do I get Illustrator to display the actual size of the logo?

To get the top, left and width of an groupitem without Clipping mask. Actually the group has Clipping mask. But i need only the width of the selection (without Clipping mask). I got these properties in scripting but including the clipping mask. The GUI itself shows different (i.e. Info -->: X:0 mm, Y:0 mm, W:full width [including clipping mask]. Transform palette -->: X:43.00, Y:22.0, W:64 [excluding clipping mask])
How to get the properties without clipping mask?

I'm trying to import some JPEG images into illustrator to add a very simple vector graphic over the top of some of them. The prolem is that when I import the images the don't appear at the same resolution as they should be. The images are all 600px x 400px 72dpi but when I import them into illustrator the software is readinig them (via the w & h dimensions in my illy browser) as 144px x 96px. The odd thing is that when I export them from Illustrator they're showing as 600x400px images again. Is this somethign to do with my import settings or preferences?

Is there a way to get the dimension text to highlight along with the actual dimensions, without having to directly select it after pulling a dimension off of an object? CAD Tools 7 automatically highlighted it.

Normally I'd use ArtDirector Toolkit, but I can't install it or oter software right now (too long to explain why).
Anyway I have several elements to scale, and I'm trying to find a formula/calculation to determine scale.
Example - 1 object is 3.7486" and I want to make it 5.3231" - how do I calculate the scale percentage to enlarge it?

I learned out to make the tick marks using copies and rotation. My question now is, how is the rotation calculated so A) I get the correct placement of the tick marks, especially the small ones as there are so many and B) how do I calculate the rotation degree so that I have the proper amount of space at the bottom of the guage/dial?
I know how to get the large tick marks and the small tick marks, if I were placing them evenly around the entire circle, I would know how to do that also - but since I'm placing them around only a portion of the circle (although still evenly) I'm lost. I can only figure out the space by hit and miss calculations and that is taking much too long. I would also need to know how much to rotate the entire thing by in order to get the open space at the bottom as shown.

I want to use a 3rd party brush to 'color in' parts of a drawing or paint the background so it has a nice effect.However, when I use the brush tool to add color it reacts in an odd way as seen in the snapshot. I've looked at the brush options but am unsure of what will make a difference. Is there a way of devoting more ram to the program when I'm using it?
Is there an alternative way of adding the same stroke to the actual fill of a shape? At the moment all of my fill colors are block colors rather than having a kind of chalk / pastel texture that I can get with the brush. Basically, I would like to fill shapes with textured color rather than flat color.

Looking to switch to the LCD / TFT type monitors - am on CRTs at the moment...
Some questions:
1/ I see that in many cases (models), even though the brightness remain constant - 300 cd/m2 - the contrast ratios vary from 800:1 to 3000:1
I would think the higher contrast ratio would be better but often more expensive monitors offer the 800:1 and cheaper ones offer the 3000:1. This from the same manufacturer. Am i missing something?
2/ Today, is there a difference between TFT and LCD when it comes to monitors or do they mean the same thing or rather are talking about the same thing?
3/ Another wild difference... some expensive ones are talking of a 16ms refresh while the cheaper ones are at 5ms
4/ Ideally, i'm looking for a 1600 x 1200 but - obviously these are not the widescreens. See some available at 20/21 inch category and they are the traditional 3:4 screen ratio (like CRTs). So would it be better to go for a 24" at 1920 x 1200... in about the same price range?

I realize this is probably designed in the typeface.

This came to my attention around the CS4 era, but I've recently noticed still remains with CS6 - but just why is there a limit as to what image sizes we can export PNG files at [AKA around the 8000x8000 area at 400dpi for me]?
Surely as long as we have the computing power [and RAM] than we should be able to export beyond the 10000/400dpi pixels range [or does it depend on the computer]?

When making new artboards:
1. how do you make it so it is a multi-page document for printing?
2. can you have artboards that are different sizes as part of the same file?
3. what is the point of changing the order of artboards?
4. do you use extra artboards for coming up with ideas off of the main canvas? because it seems you could also do this just outside the boundaries of the main artboard.

My coworker and I both have the same version of Illustratir (CS6) and both use Lion on iMacs, but today noticed something weird. He saved a file similar to a file I had done before as both an eps and a pdf and his file size was more than twice what my file sizes usually are. I thought it was odd, so I copied everything from his file into a new file (same dimensions) and saved out an eps and pdf (default settings), and like I thought, my files were less than half the size of his.
Why would two machines be saving identical files at different sizes? Is there a setting somewhere I'm missing? Everything in the file is vector, if it matters. There's not even any editable text.

I am making very detailed artwork in Illustrator that ultimately has to be uploaded to a website as a pdf file. This artwork takes ages to save and when converted to pdf format, even at the lowest quality pdf, the files are huge. What is the best way to get the file size down? Turning the files into low res jpegs somewhat defeats the purpose of making detailed vector art in the first place.
The artwork has a lot of repeated elements that could be turned into symbols but I'm told this doesn't fix the problem of huge pdfs.

Is it possible to create AND save predefined document sizes instead of the standard US-letter, US-legal, A4, A3…? And DELETE these for video and screen sizes, ect., which I don`t need? I need my own standard sizes (print) for a daily working basis like business cards -> 85x55, postcard ->... A4). So that I don`t have to type the measures again and again manually within a new document or existing artwork. I normally combine all printproduct (drawingareas) for a client in ONE AI file.

difference between DVD 4:3 and DVD 16:9. How should I be saving my file if it is to be shown on 18" tv screens ? Or does how I save it depend on something to do with the photographs I have in the slideshow? Will saving it as 4:3 reduce the overall file size ? Or is there another way to reduce the file size so I can fit more onto a DVD? At the moment I can only fit just over an hour onto a 4.7gb DVD. video editing dummy that I am.

I'm working at a screen shop, printing .ps files for film. Most of the art is provided from the client on seperate artboards of varying size. In the print dialog box I select "custom" from media size options. This sets my page size to the size of the selected artboard. The problem is each page needs to be a different size so I am forced to print each page one at a time. Is there a way for illustrator to change the media size per artboard?
