I have a path that turned out to be a litt ethicker than it needs to be.
I see that I can expand a path with Offset Path. I have read online that you can contract a path by entering a negative number, but when I try that, it ignores the minus sign and expends the path instead.
Is there some other way to contract the path?
Is there a way to make the offset path not close the gap(red arrow)/not disappear if the two paths collide? like if the paths gets x milimeter close, then they dont offset anymore?

I have expanded letters and joined their paths so that there are negative space, I was wondering if it were possible to fill in the negative space with a clipping mask? (like one would with an object like a circle or rectangle) The letter that I am using is an A and I have connected two A's together like a diamond reflecting each other... Is it possible to create a clipping mask to cover the negative space of the inside of the letters...?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm doing an offset path command on a random shape and I need to repeat that in 4mm increments. I noticed that this command is far from accurate. To be as precise as possible I copy the base shape, paste it in front, apply the offset path command +4mm, +8mm etc (since the shape has round edges I chose round and a miter of 5000), and expand appearance. However, at 8mm expansion the round curves become pointy curves and therefore not mimicking the original shape.

I made a path and filled it with black. When I zoom in to make anchor adjustments, the fill and the path outline are offset making it very difficult to adjust and align filled paths. This happens all the time.

The letter "A" on the right is the same except I used offset path to expand the shape of the letter "A" but the gradient doesn't keep it's original coordinates and the outside shape of the offset "A" does not match the gradient of the original inside "A". I need the gradient to expand out with the same center coordinates as the gradient inside the original "A". I can't just scale the "A". I need both shapes of the "A" but filled with the same gradient.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm really new to Illustrator, and I'm trying to print an image that will have a CutContour swatch around it, with a bleed outside of the CutContour line. You'll see that I set up the bleed by creating an offset path outside of the CutContour path. However, I would like to delete the rest of the image outside of that, but I'm not sure how to do this. I don't want to print the entire block of the photograph, just the image inside the tracing, leaving the outside white. I thought I could select the offset path and make a Clipping Mask from that but it says it's "too complex" or doesn't do anything at all. I've attached an example since it will probably make more sense to have something to look at in addition to my explanation...
View 1 Replies View RelatedSo I am preparing a document for printing on an Epilog Zing Laser 10000. I have an outline for a cut I need to make, but I need to accomodate for the kerf of the laser. I am trying to select the circles and use the Offset Path tool to make new circles in the same places slightly smaller. However when I apply the negative offset I get a new circle on the outside of the path and on the inside.
As you can see there is now a larger circle as well as a smaller circle, but the smaller circles don't even have a smaller circle only a larger one despite the fact I entered a negative offset.What can I do to only get the smaller circle in all the circle? Am I even on the right path as far as the path offset tool? Pun intended.
I was trying to make a logo and for doing as I sketched it I thought Offset path will do. But unfortunately it didnt. By using this feature repeatedly the shape is losing its initial form. This is what I want (as concept) but as you can see the shapes don't have the same form as the original cloud:
I know is almost impossible to make this without any distortion, but I was wondering if there is any other methond with less shape deformation.
How do I offset the path of a random shape (for example the outline of a guitar) without having it automatically inset the path as well? Is there an easier way to delete the segments of path I don't want than double clicking continuously with the white arrow?

1. Adding Effects to a path applies the effect but the effect is not visible in the Appearance panel.
2. In conjunction with this, it appears that internal stroking of the object creates a weird offset. The stroking is visually incorrect. The stroke generally offset by -1 on each axis. If the object has had a rounding effect applied to it, some of the corners become mangled.
I'm currently having troubles from having too many anchor points after "image trace" or "offset path tool".
1. I would like to know if there's a way of deleting useless points AT ONCE. (ex. multiple anchor points on a stait line, or duplicated points at one anchor point)
- I've tried "Simplify" but it changed the picture too much.
- I've tried "Remove redundant points" when using "image trace" but it came out as below:
2. Sometimes pathfinder seems to make duplicated paths. Is there any way of knowing that there are duplicated paths OR eraseing duplicated paths at ONCE?
I've modified my offset quantity using GetOffsetCurves to be a negative number so as to ensure that my offset polyline is always inside the original but it is working erratically. Sometimes it is outside with a negative number and other times inside. I was thinking of testing the resulting Plines length to ensure that it is smaller (I realise there could possibly be morew than one but this would not happen in my case.)
Does this sound overly cumbersome? Would a rollback be necessary to "undo" the polyline if it is longer and therefore outside the original?
Is there anyway of entering a starting file number for a clip import? Eg uvs101102_123459~0.mpg is just too long for the thumbnails.

I love the width tool but when I try to use it on a custom brush I am unable to isolate one side or the other to expand/contract. I'm assuming the behavior should be the same as when used on a basic stroke. Is this a bug?

The file contains a surface (meshed) I would like to create a thickness for each face. Since, the number of faces is very large, I cannot do it manually, is there an option/ trick to select them all, or perhaps a different way to create a thickness to the meshed surface.
I have a couple of strange angles and moving parts going on in an assembly. there is 1 constraint i am happy for inventor to predict the offset for. the problem is I am using other constraints i later want to bin, to pin it in position then try to apply this constraint. it looks like the predict offset tick box only measures to 3 dp, so as soon as i apply this constraint my model goes sick. I have to take a measurment and copy and place the measurment with all dp's into the constraint to make it work.
Is there a setting to specify the predict offset number of decimal places?
When I try entering a X/Y coordinate or enter the opacity number, when I try to type example 58, I type the 5 first then the 8 but it types it in as 85 putting the text infront
Also, when I type in the coordinates and want to delete the decimal place example, 23.756 to 24, I try clicking in the place and hitting backspace or highlighting the 3.756 and entering 4, it will hurry and highlight everything so when I backspace it delets all or when I enter the 4 it will highlight all and put the 4 so my object flys to another part of the art board.

For the sake of a clean test: I create a new doc, using the New Document Profile: Print.
Select Rectangle Tool, click on artboard, type in 300px for width. ENTER.
In inches, it measures as 4.1667in. Why?
I expect it to be precisely 1in.
Also, if I punch in 300pt, it comes out to be 4.1667in as well.

In previous releases, when I wanted to start entering text at a certain point (with the regular type tool) I would position the I-beam at the vertical line where I wanted to start, and with the little horizonal line of the I-beam on the horizontal line where I wanted to start, and click. But in CS6, that click seems to position the text on the left-most dotted line surrounding the I-beam, rather on the I-beam itself. Is there some parameter I can set so that the I-beam determines the starting point of text? Or do I just need to adjust my thinking to a different way?

How do i create text frames so each grid section within the polar grid is separate and therefore allows me to click on it and enter text. I would also like to change the colour of all the polar grid sections individually. I think it might have something to do with threaded text but not sure.

This time restarting Ai fixed the issue the first time. I just don't know if this was human-error/setting on my end, or a minor bug to report.
So I create a CMYK Ai doc. Create some black text and/or shapes. Then decide to change color to rich black by manually entering CMYK values (in this case, 60, 40, 40, 90), select ok. However, the colors revert back to original percentages (75, 68, 67, 90).
In past versions, it's happened once or twice, and restarting Ai didn't solve the first time.
We have recently updated our office Adobe Creative Suite, and are now using Illustrator CS6 to clean-up hand drawn sketches. When we run any sort of trace on a simple, black and white line drawing, the trace results in a negative image: the white background turns black, and the outline of the sketch is white. We have tried checking the "ignore white" box and several other settings changes. Initially, for our first few times using the new suite this didn't happen:

with flatm 2D-appearing column designs, this isn't much problem; graph column designs which are meant to be 3D in appearance, ie with depth/both, simply appear flipped and the bottoms of such columns don't respect the correct vanishing point, such as a 3D solid bar type column. Is there a way to make such dimensional graph bars look correct visually when their data values go negative?
I have created a column graph with a large amount of data. I would like to apply two different colors to the positive and negative columns. Whenever I click on a column and go to object>graph> the column section is unavailable. I checked to see if the graph had become ungrouped, even though I never selected it. If I select the graph as a whole it does not say ungrouped. When I select a column the ungroup tab is greyed out. Does that mean my columns are ungrouped?

Adding strokes to an object, often text (in this case outlined/expanded text), and there develops little unsightly "negative space shapes".
The white stroke has an Offset Path added to it.
How to dynamically rid an object of these? Tried drawing little paths over them, grouping them with the compound text path and using Pathfinder > Add effect . . . but nope.
The workarounds are obvious -
1) Expand everything, delete the unwanted bits.
2) Draw solid paths over the negative spaces that match the bg, like the pic below:
I have some negative space I created(black area, see first image) that I want to fill with type, not just a simple fill.
Basically I want to create the negative space from a bunch of small minus signs(-) that need to line up as they go across. If I type on each path one at a time as the text doesn't line up that way. This needs to be one continuous path. (see second image)
Unfortunately if I add them together, it creates a compound path, which you cannot type on, unless I am mistaken? So I need them to be a path, not a compound object.
