i want to have multiple offsetoutlines on a closed or non-closed path. with "offset path" i can make only one additional outline but i need multiple?
i searched all over the net for answers with no success.
Do I need to create a closed path first? Don't know how.

How can I calculate the proper destination coordinates? The path art can be a curve or a rectangle, any shape. I need to place the text frame inside the path such that no part of the text frame overlaps the boundaries of the path art.

Here, its stated that the method AIPathfinderSuite::DoFrontMinusBackEffect of the API did the required task. I tried the same but couldn't get it to work.
My first preference is to use the Illustrator SDK, not any third party libraries.
I'm using Illustrator CS6.I'm working with closed paths on an illustrated character. I have a leg overlapping a body for example. The leg is essentially a 4 sided shape but I only want a stroke on 3 sides. On the 4th side I don't want a stroke on it so that the leg blends with the body. I first thought about using the shape builder tool to merge the 2 shapes to see what that would look like but they won't merge for some reason.
Then I tried to use the width tool to drop the stroke on the 4th side down to a 0 width for the side I want ... but that didn't work either.how I can change a closed shape so that a section of the shape has a different stroke colour (i.e. none!) from the rest of the shape?
I have a stringy object which is a single closed path. The fill disappears where it overlaps itself. Can I prevent that?

same thing with the connect two paths. holding the command key doesn't change the behavior of the pencil tool.i'm guessing there is no way of remapping the 'smooth tool' to option again? or was it moved to another hotkey?
I've made a pattern brush that I'm using to simulate a woods line for a boardgame map:
Shown above is the unstroked bounding box as well. To use this brush, I draw an outline of a woods mass with the pencil tool, then apply the brush and Expand Appearance. At that point I'm hoping the brush sections will join into one closed path so that I can fill it with a woodsy green, but instead the fill gets applied to each section of brush independently:
The join points seem fine - it's not like the two ends of the brush don't line up at all: EDIT - Actually, that's not just one point in the middle there - that's the ends of both paths lying almost on top of each other. It's possible to separate the two and then ctrl-J join them. Problem is, I want that single path automatically.
So how to get Illustrator to treat the resulting path as one closed path instead of a compound path?
I'm using Illustrator CC. When I draw an outline with either the pencil tool or the paintbrush tool, I can't fill it in with color, even though the path appears to be closed. The "fill" square has a red diagonal line through it and won't switch to a color.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI have used PEDIT to join multiple polylines, which now appear as polylines. But when I use QSELECT to show all open (non-closed) section, one polyline still shows up as open.
I've attached the file I'm working on. The polyline in question is the green outline on the object on the right.
Once a path is closed, how do you break it open? And while I'm at it: I have a vector mask. I want to draw another vector shape and subtract it from this vector mask. How would I do this?

I've noticed that sometimes when I use an artistic media brush around a closed path, I can't change the brushstroke color without filling the path with that color; see the attached file for an example. I thought that was just unfortunately the way it was.But today I watched Jeff Harrison's video tutorial [URL]...about making a custom brush. He applies it to a closed path, and then, to my surprise, he changes the color and it just changes the color of the brushstroke.
I followed the tutorial, made the brush, applied it to a rounded rectangle, all fine. However, when I changed the color, the center of the rectangle filled with the color as well as changing the brush color, as it always has for me in the past. So what's wrong? Do I have some setting somewhere set to the wrong thing? (I don't have Fill Open Curves checked.)

I'm trying to create about 150 cross-sections, each consisting of 9 closed polylines of which I have created the coordinates. My issue is making the list of coordinates create separate polylines instead of one enormous polyline. Any way to setup the columns, perhaps with blank rows, some way of applying ASCII code, etc. to automatically break up these polylines? (even if they aren't closed that's fine, I just need to make the polylines separate.)

If I make an art brush, say two solid rectangles when I apply this to a shape such as a square or star, there is a corner/point that doesn't seem connected, I get a gap/split. I'm guessing it is where the brush has started/ended along the path. These shapes are closed though right? Is there a way to avoid the gap/split? I noticed if I use the pen tool to give the point handles it'll seem connected, however now the shape is not a corner.
I know I can also use the appearance panel and set two strokes aligned along the outside, but this does not seem easy to update sizes, say I had 7 strokes for a rainbow for example each at 5 pt and wanted to update that to 7pt I would have to manually update each one? I also don't think I can use the appearance panel to set up a gradient stroke that flows along the path, such as a square with rounded corners applied, when I tried with the appearance panel it was as if it was masking a gradient beneath it.
I am using CS6, though I'm planning to switch to CC.
When I close Illutrator CS5 the application hangs and the windows "this application is not responding" message appears. I have now seen this on 3 different PC's (including a Desktop, Laptop and MacMini Server) all running Windows 7 64bit.Here's the Event log details:

In Illustrator CC my merge command doesn't seem to be working correctly. Instead of merging two closed paths into one it seems to be trimming them, or slicing them. I stupidly thought it was an update to the feature and have been trying to get my head around using it but I've just shown my colleagues and they assure me it's not right.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to combine two closed, filled arcs to make a 3 sided image with a large arc at the top and a small one at the bottom. I need to knock out the extra fill along the outside of the small arc at the bottom which is the point where the large connects. I'm also unfortunately still using CS2 ans using XP. I've tried many combinations using the pathfinder tools as well as setting them up as compound paths and masks.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI was working in Illustrator CS6 I had made a a bunch of vectors for a background and grouped them. I applied a blur to the group and was still editing the vectors within the group since then. After I saved and closed my file at the end of the day and opened it the next day my vector group is now solid. It seems like it is just a raster image? I can't edit it at all. How can I get it back? If I can't change it back I am going to have to start again!
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm using Illustrator CS4. I am unable to Create Outlines for a font after I had used the type on the Path Tool. I had used the ellipse tool to create a closed circular path, then I selected the Type on a Path tool. I selected my text using the arrow tool and ctrl-shift-o (Create outlines) and then I receive the message: "Can't Create type outlines." Not quite sure why this is happening. Did I miss something? The thing is this - my type is in the position and alignment that I want and I don't necessarily want to work with the Type as a Font but as vector shapes.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm doing an offset path command on a random shape and I need to repeat that in 4mm increments. I noticed that this command is far from accurate. To be as precise as possible I copy the base shape, paste it in front, apply the offset path command +4mm, +8mm etc (since the shape has round edges I chose round and a miter of 5000), and expand appearance. However, at 8mm expansion the round curves become pointy curves and therefore not mimicking the original shape.
