Illustrator :: All Paths Are Jagged
Jan 22, 2014
For some reason all my paths, including old files have become jagged. New paths are coming up jagged as wells as print out and PDF files. Using CS5.
I am not an expert but have been using AI for years to make patterns with the pen tool. The smaller I make the illustration the worst it gets.It is not the pixel preview, tried that already.

I want to join two paths to create a shape that I can fill but at the same time retain one of the original paths (the red one in the image below). I can copy the path I want to retain but surely there is a more elegant solution. See below for for an illustration:

PS CC
AI CC
I have a 2500 x 4088 px PSD file with no jagged edges, until it is placed into Illustrator.
I believe that I have placed the PSD file in its original size, but may be wrong. My artboard was created to be larger than the original image, and when placing the file I simply clicked on the artboard.
I have not knowingly increased or reduced the dimensions of the placed file.
Will the jagged edge be present if I place the AI file into InDesign?
Is there a setting somewhere that I need to change to remove the jagged edge?

I am new to Illustrator and I just atempted my first vector drawing. The problem I have is that I finished all of the lines using the pen tool on all the outlines. I saved it as an svgz file and then I selected all of the lines and converted it to a live paint object to add in color using the live paint bucket tool. This all went well until at the end I noticed that along the outlines the color looked jagged along it.
Also I can see the outline of the pen tool when it intersects with other outlines with the pen tool. In the previous version of the Image before I converted it to a live paint object it did not do this.
Above is before I converted it to a live paint object.

I asked a question a couple days ago regarding the effects of old style print. Although, I know a lot of it is done manually, I was wondering if it could also be done digitally in either Illustrator or Photoshop.
In Illustrator I created 10 brush strokes from a jagged pattern found in a vintage element to represent the scratch board or printing effect. In Photoshop you can kind of create the effect from switching to a Bitmap mode.
However, Photoshop is a pain to bend the halftone lines to fit the curves and they are all evenly spaced. Illustrator works better for laying ou the lines based on the tonal value, but using a brush for the strokes becomes a little distorted.
How to achieve the jagged edge effect show in this very simple image? The edges and lines are not all the same so I don't want to use the ripple tool in PS and the wrinkle Tool makes them too ragged.
I find it hard to believe this style is only accomplished through scratch board or printing techniques. Even traditional pen and ink doesn't really work like this. I find way too many images, free ones too, like the one below to have it be only done with scratch board.

I have Illustrator CS6 and I've noticed something odd. Whenever I create shapes they have jagged edges. I've attached a screenshot so you can see this. I'm wondering if it's a setting or something that I don't have turned on (or off).

This image appears to have jagged edges on all of the paths. I created outlines for the text and converted strokes to path, but i can not seem to figure out how to make the image's path edges appear smooth. The image above is a png file but the image still appears this way when i view the ai version in illustrator.

I am working on a freelance logo and the client kept mentioning that my sample PDF's seem to have "smudge" on part of it, I never saw it and then I asked them to actually SEND me the file while I was not at my primary computer so I can look at it.
It seem that when you zoom in and out the shape changes and gets these random jagged edges. I don't see them on my computer or phone and my client only sees them on her desktops but it does also print out with these weird edges as well. I converted all type to lines and did an export to PDF to show her samples. The first image shows how it is supposed to look and how it did look when I first opened, the other 2 show what happens when it gets zoomed. And it changes too, it isn't the same jagged edges every-time.

Why is it sometimes a clipping mask produces jagged lines? I know if there's a dark background and a light one sitting on top of it, then this happens. is there a solution to clearing this out when applying a mask?? You can see in the screenshot I've circled where you see the jagged lines and in the layers palette you can see the clipping mask object.

I have an outline of a graphic that was extreemly jagged. Im using a plotter to cut it out and its just way complex and tiny of a cut for the machine to do. Is there a way to have Illustrator maybe smooth those out by removing every other point or something?

I created a jagged line drawing in Processing, than exported it to PDF. When I opened it in Illustrator it was fine (I turned anti-aliasing off). But after saving it to PDF and reviewing in Adobe Acrobat the anti-aliasing was back on. Is there any way to preserve it? Or is it just Acrobat, that applies anti-aliasing when previewing? Is it possible to print it on paper in it's jagged format?

Illustrator CS6.
I created some images in illustrator. Saved the images as a .tff. Put the images in a Word.docx. Looks great. Convert the word.docx to a pdf and my images have jagged edges. I have anti-alaising check in my preferences but still the image looks bad.

I'm in the midst of making a type based logo right now and I sheared it to give it a bit of a diagonal edge. However, the diagonal lines are now noticeably pixelated and jagged. What I did was type out the name in the logo, then created outlines for it, then sheared it. I went over some of the lines with a pen tool stroke but it is still coming out the same. Here is my logos. The vertical diagonal lines in the E, K, R and I's are especially noticeable.
This is my own personal music producer logo and I am pretty green with illustrator. So how do I make it as clean as this [URL] or some of these [URL].

I create all of my lineart for illustrations, in Adobe Illustrator. I use the pen tool in combination with the line width tool to create line weight. Once I have completed all of the line work, I select everything and Expand. This results in not having fills for teh areas of the illustration which need to be colored.
From there, what I do is select everything > livepaint > make. I then fill in each area with a base color, using the live paint bucket tool. Once completed, I again select everything > expand. This leaves me fills that I can select indivually to apply gradients and work with directly.
This process works great until I expand the live paint group. After expanding, there is a very thin white border everywhere that two seperate colors meet. This only happens after expanding, it does not happen when it is still a live paint group. I have tried every option in the expand window, and get the same result.
I have exported the completed work in several formats ( .jpg, eps, .png ) and the lines are still there.

I have been messing with a simple black rectangle and when I transform it, jagged edges appear. This is the base for a logo for web. I have anti-alising checked in pref. The logo looks horrible and blurry/jagged on the edges even when previewed on several screens from pc to mac.
this is also happening with text, that has been made an object (top of text seen in the rectangle.)

I was designing some cartoon character, but I've noticed something, I'm working on CMYK and I've got some black lines on the top layer, and some red and violet color shapes in the bottom layer for the background color, but like if the colours weren't mixing allright in the edges, like some kind of jagged white fine edge and I don't know how to get rid of it.
Here are some jpeg of the problem: [URL] ....
Perhaps it's not as strong as I see it on the CMYK Illustrator vector, but it's pretty annoying on the final result. How to get rid of these things?

In Illustrator CS6 and CC, when the stroke width tool is used on a curve, the curve is actually made up of a series of straight lines instead of smooth vector curves:
whereas in CS5 it looks perfect. These images may be too small to see the details, but the difference is there. Is there a workaround for this? Or is it recognized as a bug?

How do i get rid of jagged lines?
Circles and diagonal lines look rubbish when i am in hidden view which i use for simple 3d black / white (i think this is the best way?).
I have tried:
- viewres (1000, 5000, 10000, 20000 sightly better)
- regen
See examples.

I trace a lot of line drawings in my work to add regions of color or to create a layered watercolor effect.
In previous versions on Illustrator (I currently use CS6 but I think CS5 worked the way I liked) I could set the opacity to whatever I wanted and new pencil or pen objects would be trasparent as I drew them. Now my paths are opaque no matter what my setting in the transparency menu and it's impossible to see what I'm tracing.
I used to be very productive drawing blobs of color and overlaying quickly for a nice watercolor effect, but now I have to draw a blob, select it and set it's opacity, then draw my next blob and do the same thing. Very time consuming and not good for quick evaluation of whether or not my image is looking good.

I was wondering if there was a way to 'unmerge' a group of connected paths. The thing is whenever I click on one of the ovals, it selects a whole group of ovals instead of just the one I selected. The problem is that I drew an oval, copied it multiple times until I made a pile out of it, then copied that pile and made other piles. So whenever I click on one of the ovals, it selects the entire pile. Is there a way I can 'unmerge' or ungroup all the paths so I can select just one of the ovals? I'm not doing this so I can copy them again, I'm trying to delete them individually but I really can't.

I've a problem while using the pen tool.. when I draw a new path or more when I'm adjusting the angle of the drawn path, all the other paths aren't shown meanwhile. I don't like that because it keeps me from adjusting the lines accurate to each other. How can I keep them shown?
To illustrate what I mean: [URL]

I'm trying to join two paths with the pen tool. The shape is a coffe mug, took me half an hour to try to combine paths with the pen tool.
I'm trying to join where the little white gap is. I had the same issue opposite but I managed to draw a little curve in there and join the paths. But I can't seem to do it the other side and I don't understand how it works.

I have selected paths on the artboard and would like to be able to move them into one layer.
As there are a large number is there anyway of moving them to a new layer without selecting them (blue highlighting) and moving them?
They are selected on the artboard so the colour square appears next to them in the layers panel but I can't move them to a new layer without selecting them (even using ctrl or shift is still quite time consuming).

I'm in the process of creating an SVG file. I'll have a large number of paths of which all have a seemingly random ID's assigned to them, for example path4758 (see below). Ideally, I'd love to be able to set my own ID for a path, it would work when I parse my SVG file with a Python script. Is it possible to change the ID that is assigned to a path inside of Illustrator? If so, how would I be able to do so?
Sample Path
<path id="path4758" fill="#6DBE45" stroke="#727271" d="M76.872,481.133C76.012,484.881,74.835,481.123,76.872,481.133z"/>
