Illustrator :: Real Jagged Outline - Can Auto-smooth It Out?
Sep 3, 2013
I have an outline of a graphic that was extreemly jagged. Im using a plotter to cut it out and its just way complex and tiny of a cut for the machine to do. Is there a way to have Illustrator maybe smooth those out by removing every other point or something?

We know this famous CRTL+Y shortcut , it turns the artwork in something ugly , all these wires lol.
But what is the real use fo the "outline view" ?

Whenever I make a stroke with my brush tool, it smooths out. I have checked everywhere to try and find a place where you can "disable" the autosmooth on your brushes, and have found nothing.

Re: 2D circle jagged lines, 3D model hidden jagged lines. How do i get smooth lines?
How do i get rid of jagged lines?
Circles and diagonal lines look rubbish when i am in hidden view which i use for simple 3d black / white (i think this is the best way?).
I have tried:
- viewres (1000, 5000, 10000, 20000 sightly better)
- regen
See examples.

The smile on the face is too jagged. I tried Gaussian Blur but, while it smooths it, it also makes it blurry.
I have a feeling the best solution probably lies in selecting it and stroking it, but not sure...

I have tried lots of different design ways but still looks crummy.

how a png image sometimes has a checkerboard background instead of a dull white square background? Those png's are cool to import into Xara and have a smooth outline.
why is it when i EXPORT a png with the checkerboard background the outline looks like an 8 bit nintendo outline when placed on a website? These type of pngs with the checkerboard background are meant to be viewed as having no background...which actually works for me but the outline looks horrible.
what do i need to do to fix that outline issue? Is there some sort of setting that i have to tweak?

I am very much a Noob at photoshop, this is officially the 2nd time I have used it. I have a small image, I want to rotate it 30 degrees counterclockwise. I also mant to put a small black border (10 pixels) around the outside of it. You can see the one I tried up in the banner on my developing site.

I'm building a flash site and i'm trying to make that nice smooth and rounded outline (just a simple dark grey line with rounded edges) to put in the background
I cannot seem to do this! I feel very stupid, as i'm not actually bad with photoshop. I've made a 750x450 photoshop file and just cant get it to look nice.
Does someone have a simple method for this? How can i do it to the very maximum size that will fit on the 750 450 doc?
the perfect example is of the main flash part of the macroedia site here here

For some reason all my paths, including old files have become jagged. New paths are coming up jagged as wells as print out and PDF files. Using CS5.
I am not an expert but have been using AI for years to make patterns with the pen tool. The smaller I make the illustration the worst it gets.It is not the pixel preview, tried that already.

I'm programming a tool handling with width profile and width markers. I would like to see a preview while I'm editing the width marker values (in real time).
I'm editing the width of strokes during dragging the mouse in small steps. Each mouse drag event means a small adaption of the widths. The problem is, that I do not see the change during I drag the mouse. I see the change after I release the mouse. Is it possible to update the artwork during dragging the mouse? So that I see the art object changing during I drag the mouse.

Products:
PS CC
AI CC
I have a 2500 x 4088 px PSD file with no jagged edges, until it is placed into Illustrator.
I believe that I have placed the PSD file in its original size, but may be wrong. My artboard was created to be larger than the original image, and when placing the file I simply clicked on the artboard.
I have not knowingly increased or reduced the dimensions of the placed file.
Will the jagged edge be present if I place the AI file into InDesign?
Is there a setting somewhere that I need to change to remove the jagged edge?

I am new to Illustrator and I just atempted my first vector drawing. The problem I have is that I finished all of the lines using the pen tool on all the outlines. I saved it as an svgz file and then I selected all of the lines and converted it to a live paint object to add in color using the live paint bucket tool. This all went well until at the end I noticed that along the outlines the color looked jagged along it.
Also I can see the outline of the pen tool when it intersects with other outlines with the pen tool. In the previous version of the Image before I converted it to a live paint object it did not do this.
Above is before I converted it to a live paint object.

I asked a question a couple days ago regarding the effects of old style print. Although, I know a lot of it is done manually, I was wondering if it could also be done digitally in either Illustrator or Photoshop.
In Illustrator I created 10 brush strokes from a jagged pattern found in a vintage element to represent the scratch board or printing effect. In Photoshop you can kind of create the effect from switching to a Bitmap mode.
However, Photoshop is a pain to bend the halftone lines to fit the curves and they are all evenly spaced. Illustrator works better for laying ou the lines based on the tonal value, but using a brush for the strokes becomes a little distorted.
How to achieve the jagged edge effect show in this very simple image? The edges and lines are not all the same so I don't want to use the ripple tool in PS and the wrinkle Tool makes them too ragged.
I find it hard to believe this style is only accomplished through scratch board or printing techniques. Even traditional pen and ink doesn't really work like this. I find way too many images, free ones too, like the one below to have it be only done with scratch board.

I have Illustrator CS6 and I've noticed something odd. Whenever I create shapes they have jagged edges. I've attached a screenshot so you can see this. I'm wondering if it's a setting or something that I don't have turned on (or off).

This image appears to have jagged edges on all of the paths. I created outlines for the text and converted strokes to path, but i can not seem to figure out how to make the image's path edges appear smooth. The image above is a png file but the image still appears this way when i view the ai version in illustrator.

I am working on a freelance logo and the client kept mentioning that my sample PDF's seem to have "smudge" on part of it, I never saw it and then I asked them to actually SEND me the file while I was not at my primary computer so I can look at it.
It seem that when you zoom in and out the shape changes and gets these random jagged edges. I don't see them on my computer or phone and my client only sees them on her desktops but it does also print out with these weird edges as well. I converted all type to lines and did an export to PDF to show her samples. The first image shows how it is supposed to look and how it did look when I first opened, the other 2 show what happens when it gets zoomed. And it changes too, it isn't the same jagged edges every-time.

Why is it sometimes a clipping mask produces jagged lines? I know if there's a dark background and a light one sitting on top of it, then this happens. is there a solution to clearing this out when applying a mask?? You can see in the screenshot I've circled where you see the jagged lines and in the layers palette you can see the clipping mask object.

I'm having this really annoying problem in Adobe Illustrator CC
When I use a tool such as the extrude and bevel tool to make an object 3D, it all works fine untill I have to expand the appearence then I get this edge on my object and I can't find any way to get rid of it.
Take a look at this pic to see what I mean [URL]
As you can see, their's an annoying white jagged edge and it's really annoying and I can't get rid of it.

I created a jagged line drawing in Processing, than exported it to PDF. When I opened it in Illustrator it was fine (I turned anti-aliasing off). But after saving it to PDF and reviewing in Adobe Acrobat the anti-aliasing was back on. Is there any way to preserve it? Or is it just Acrobat, that applies anti-aliasing when previewing? Is it possible to print it on paper in it's jagged format?

I created some images in illustrator. Saved the images as a .tff. Put the images in a Word.docx. Looks great. Convert the word.docx to a pdf and my images have jagged edges. I have anti-alaising check in my preferences but still the image looks bad.

I'm in the midst of making a type based logo right now and I sheared it to give it a bit of a diagonal edge. However, the diagonal lines are now noticeably pixelated and jagged. What I did was type out the name in the logo, then created outlines for it, then sheared it. I went over some of the lines with a pen tool stroke but it is still coming out the same. Here is my logos. The vertical diagonal lines in the E, K, R and I's are especially noticeable.
This is my own personal music producer logo and I am pretty green with illustrator. So how do I make it as clean as this [URL] or some of these [URL].

I create all of my lineart for illustrations, in Adobe Illustrator. I use the pen tool in combination with the line width tool to create line weight. Once I have completed all of the line work, I select everything and Expand. This results in not having fills for teh areas of the illustration which need to be colored.
From there, what I do is select everything > livepaint > make. I then fill in each area with a base color, using the live paint bucket tool. Once completed, I again select everything > expand. This leaves me fills that I can select indivually to apply gradients and work with directly.
This process works great until I expand the live paint group. After expanding, there is a very thin white border everywhere that two seperate colors meet. This only happens after expanding, it does not happen when it is still a live paint group. I have tried every option in the expand window, and get the same result.
I have exported the completed work in several formats ( .jpg, eps, .png ) and the lines are still there.

I have been messing with a simple black rectangle and when I transform it, jagged edges appear. This is the base for a logo for web. I have anti-alising checked in pref. The logo looks horrible and blurry/jagged on the edges even when previewed on several screens from pc to mac.
this is also happening with text, that has been made an object (top of text seen in the rectangle.)

I was designing some cartoon character, but I've noticed something, I'm working on CMYK and I've got some black lines on the top layer, and some red and violet color shapes in the bottom layer for the background color, but like if the colours weren't mixing allright in the edges, like some kind of jagged white fine edge and I don't know how to get rid of it.
Here are some jpeg of the problem: [URL] ....
Perhaps it's not as strong as I see it on the CMYK Illustrator vector, but it's pretty annoying on the final result. How to get rid of these things?

In Illustrator CS6 and CC, when the stroke width tool is used on a curve, the curve is actually made up of a series of straight lines instead of smooth vector curves:
whereas in CS5 it looks perfect. These images may be too small to see the details, but the difference is there. Is there a workaround for this? Or is it recognized as a bug?

Problem:
How to read real number data from selected columns in an Excel spreadsheet into an illustrator javascript array variable, so that then I can use this information to construct an illustrator polygon.
Further information:
I am new to javascript (and not much of a programmer in the best case, but do have some basic knowledge using ancient languages like FORTRAN 88). I am sure I am just missing an important step here despite all morning browsing with Google for answers (something to do with variable definition I assume?). I have some survey data defining the outline of features in map view listed in a string of point (x,y) values in adjacent columns in excel (these x,y point values calculated from GPS data using a commercial program to converted 3D position to a 2D x,y by geoid projection, and then in excel to re-scale point locations to illustrator’s artboard). What I am trying to do is select columns of x,y value pairs in an excel spreadsheet, copy these values to the clipboard, and then develop an IA JavaScript to draw a polygon through the specified set of x,y points. It seems easy enough to script illustrator to draw the polygon once I get the values from the clipboard are in a javascript array (lots a good tips here [URL] ....), but pulling in the clipboard data seems to be beyond me. I have tried populating a defined array with various combinations of array declarations and app.paste(); or windows.clipboardData.getData('text/plain'); with no satisfaction. I then had the idea to try to pull in the clipboard to one long continuous string, place that in a text box (see see its structure), andthen read and split up the text in a loop to populate the JavaScript array…but that deposited a complex illustrator table object into my text box, and several attempts to force the clipboard to paste text did not work (again probably having problems understanding variable type declaration).
I would be happy to find any method of scripting the pull of the selected on an excel spreadsheet for use in an Illustrator script…so if I am making this all harder than it needs, be I would be grateful to know that also!
