I'm trying to restore a photo of my mother's sister that was taken on the day of her high school graduation. It's a group photo but here's the piece showing my aunt's face:
This whole photo had a lot of water (and probably mold) damage but the big problem with this section was that it was stuck to the glass. I managed to soak it off but it tore there, and of course that's exactly the part where my aunt's face was. Fortunately I also have a newspaper clipping showing the same photo:
so I do have a reference to go by. Here's what I'm mainly having trouble with:
1) the figure's left eye (on the right side of the face) - I tried the Clone and Heal tools but it just didn't look good so next I tried copying and pasting the other eye, flipping it horizontally, and rotating it a bit to try to get the angle right (I had to hold a ruler to the screen for that; does GIMP have a way to draw a slanted guide line that could be deleted later?). It's not bad, but it's not great either. That was when I remembered the newspaper clipping. I was going to copy from that, and amazingly they are almost exactly the same size (I measured the height of the face in each one) but being a printed piece it of course has dots and it looks awful when copied and pasted.
2) the skin tones - actually this is a problem with the whole photo; the skin tones range from almost white to very gray (actually all the grays range that way ; it's something I've been working on). But my aunt's face is the worst because it's not consistent, probably because of the tear. I've tried doing a free selection around the face and neck and experimenting with some of the color corrections - Auto Normalize and Equalize, Levels, Curves, Brightness/Contrast - but so far it hasn't worked much.
I can include more pieces, or even the entire photo. I just didn't want to take up any more space; I knew this would be a long post. Just let me know.
I am using 2.6.11 in Windows XP Pro SP3.
I am trying to restore old pictures. Some have scratches on them that I did not noticed until scanned into the computer. There is a cloudy appearance over the subjects in the pictures that I have not been able to get rid of. Is there anything that can be done to the photo before scanning? Is there any feature in Gimp that I can use to make some correction? Clone tool is not useful as there is not a good source.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI want to restore some photos, and I was wondering what format is the best for manipulation of the photo. My scanning options are: JPEG, TIFF, Bitmap, PNG, PCX, or Flash pix. My Output Resolutions are between 200 to 4800. I still have 532 GB free on my hard drive.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI can't figure out how to restore the default dock (may not be the correct terminology). This has the tools up top, and then, depending on what tool is selected, some settings on the bottom.
I've been in the windows tab trying to locate the dock and can't. Hitting "tab" on the keyboard opens another singular dock. I would like the original multifunction one that comes on install.
I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but it remembered my dock settings.
When I first downloaded gimp it worked great. Now the side tool bars are gone and I don't know how to restore them. I've attached a picture of what it looks like when I open gimp so you can see it's only the main center window that opens.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a new computer and want to move the databse catalog over. I backed up in PSE 9 to an external hard drive. I connected to HD to the new computer and tried a resotre catalog. I chose "New Location" since I was going from XP to Windows 7 and was unsure if there would be a conflict with file locations. I also chose "Restore Original Floder Strucure". Very quickly I recieve an error message "Could not restor file .xml". I have run Restore Catalog several times and each time a DIFFERENT FILE receives the error message. I then disabled Norton Anti Virus Auto-Protect. I then disabled several programs running in the background. Same problem. I then copied the Backup Catalog to the new computer and tried to Restore it from there. Same Problem. I have now run a Repair Catalog on the original file. PSE states there is no error. I want to purchas PSE 11, but wanted to install/restore the database with the same version 9 first.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI have a capstone lab project due tomorrow for my graphic arts class and I made a HUGE mistake!!! I created an image using 20 something layers and did SAVE AS as a .xcf image (with all layers open). Part of the project was to save in different formats: .xcf (with open layers), a .png, and a .jpeg (optimized). So, I did the first save and then flattened the image to SAVE AS a .png with a different file name.
Long story short, I was tired and had way too many images open at once. When I was closing all of the images I accidentally saved the changes (flatten image) to my original .xcf (with open layers)!!!! Now, my .xcf that is supposed to have open layers only has one layer...the finished project!! I tried going to the file properties to restore a previous version, but it says that no previous versions were found! I also downloaded a norton "unerase" utility, but maybe I am not scanning properly to locate the file!?!

View 6 Replies View RelatedI downloaded the free trial of the VideoStudio Pro X4 a month ago and was so impressed that I went out and bought it! Then, after downloading SP!, it encountered a problem and stopped working. It was just a matter of restarting the application but it happened more and more over the weekend, meaning I lost work which I hadn’t saved. So I decided to uninstall the free trial version and install from the disk and it worked fine for a while but I then got a problem with my security program. Not sure whether it was due to the Corel installation or just coincidence.I did a system restore to fix the problem with the security program and since then I have been unable to access VideoStudio and get the message: Error 4: Corel VideoStudio files have been damaged or modified. Please reinstall your original source. But when I try I get the message: “Setup.xml could not be loaded. This may indicate that the file is corrupt”.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Very old B/W photo that is torn/creased/stained/yellowed/etc. Just as a challenge, I thought I would try to do some repair on this photo.
Some parts of the image are incomplete/Gone. One example would be a person's face. The picture was torn in half across this person's face. The tear goes horizontally across the nose. At the tear, some of the image is gone and it is just white paper. I have had a great deal of success rebuilding this face but I have several others that are of the same condition. Code:
I've been searching for a damaged wall effect that I can create in photoshop. I'd like it to be an indoor wall, as if it's got plaster falling off and has been damaged by water... that sort of thing!
I'm trying to make a picture that looks like it is a wall inside a house that has been damaged in some way or other.
I'm looking to make something kinda like this, but I really have no idea how it was done. The whole image has a damaged look to it, and looks a little scratched up. Also I would like to know how to create the creases that appear to be in the paper.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhy do my .JPG files "appear to be unsupported or damaged" in LR 4? I've never had this isssue before, just (attempting) to import files from my snycomatic folder (taken with my iphone). I've been doing it exactly the same as usual, but this time when I attempt it I get "the files appear to be unsupported or damaged."
All are jpeg files, all open in finder just fine, and it did allow 8 of the 30 some odd pictures to be imported? preview image(s) were unavailable in the thumbnails, though the ones that worked were visable.
I did double check and the folder permissions are all fine and I seem to be able to import other files from other folders with no issues.Running Lightroom 4.4 & OSX10.7.5 on a Mbpro.
I can drag these same pictures to Lightroom and work on them but I can't import them for catalog. They preview in any viewer but I can't import for catalog.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm synchronizing my LR files with my Hard Drive files. I get an Import Results page that says: Some import operations were not performed. The files appear to be unsupported or damaged. It then lists the files that could not be imported. When I look at the files, some are .CR2 (Canon RAW) files, some are .TIF files, and some are .PSD files.
I don't know when the problem originated, but I was able to open them earlier. There are hundreds of files that cannot be read.
LR version - 4.2
OS - OS X 10.8.2
I've just moved to a new computer and also I've just started using LR4. Since moving I've had a few of my imported images display the 'The image appears to be damaged' message when in develop mode.
The image appears undamaged and I can edit and export without issue, if I copy the image on disk the copy will also cause the message to appear however when I copy the image to another computer (running Windows 7 and LR 3.3) and that doesn't report the image as damaged.
I'm not too sure what causes LR to report the image as damaged also I don't know why the image would appear damaged on one computer and not on another.
I got this message importing to LR4:
=====
The files appear to be unsupported or damaged. (2)
DSC01351.ARW
DSC01352.ARW
=====
Actually there are 41 files with this message. They happened on one day; all other days the files had no problem, so I don't think it is a card error. Every day I back up the card twice before deleting files for the next day. All copies have the error problem for that one day. I'm using a Sony a580. On the day in question, the playback function worked and I could see the photos I had taken.
There is lots of software for recovering deleted files, but that's not the problem. I need to fix damage, and although I wouldn't mind paying, I can't find any programs that give you even a hint that they will work without the money down first.
I am not the most technically savvy lady so I might have made this issue worse.
After I first installed the Creative Cloud and downloaded Photoshop, I attempted to open the program and it said "file is incomplete or damaged".
I tried deleting it out of the applications in the side folder to re-install thinking it would get rid of it but the tab is still there. How do I delete Photoshop to re-install? Is that possible?

I am getting “Error: 4 – Corel VideoStudio files have been damaged or modified. Please reinstall your original source.” with VS Pro X6 trial download. Install runs normally. But when I try to run the software, I get the above error immediately.
Things I have tried:
- Uninstalled from control panel, followed by cleanup tool (VSX4_Cleanup. Is there a more recent version for X5 or X6 ?)
- Deleted the Setup Files folder “Corel VideoStudio Pro X6 Setup Files”, and cleared TEMP files. Rebooted
- Downloaded installer again and repeated install. Rebooted. Tried to run. Same Error
- Confirmed “Protexis Licensing V2” service is running
- No prior version of the software was ever installed on this system
- Running Win 7 Pro x64 SP1. Thinkpad T420 with integrated graphics.
