GIMP :: Making Rainbows - No Perfect Transition Between Layers

I had a go at making a fake rainbow to use in a design the other day.
I did it by first creating a circle on a transparent layer and filling it red (diamater=4000px) . Then I copied and pasted it in as a new layer, bucket filled it to orange and reduced the size to 95%. I then repasted the red circle in and repeated the process a la ROYGBIV... Then I merged the layers down and hey presto- a rainbow.
Problem is that when you zoom in to it it doesn't appear to be a perfect transition between the layers. eg.
Also, It converts fine to jpeg on my computer but the site that I want to upload it to seems to make the edges of the rainbow a bit rough. Can't work out how to take a screenshot of that, it shows up when you look at it on full screen and I don't know how to use my snip tool without minimizing it.

I'm having some issues using either GIMP or PS to do this, so I figured I'd ask here. when it comes to image editing and tasks like this, but I'm currently being asked to do something for a job.
I need to take a single image which is a restaurant floor layout, then make it so all of the tables on the image are a different layer so that they can be moved around/customized accordingly.
As far as I can tell, this would involve creating layers, copying the tables from the main image, pasting them all on top as their own layer, and then sliding them around from there.
Is there any easy way to do this, or am I completely off-base?

I am trying to make a swoosh at the bottom and top of the two mirrored side profiles. As you can see I have attempted to draw one at the bottom by adding paths and smoothing it but I'm finding it very tricky, I want it to be like the curve of a circle.I am new to pen tool, I'm sure there must be an easier way. I tried removing anchor points but I just gives it a straight edge.
The bit at the end of the swoosh is too thin, I tried adding anchor points but it looks even more wonky. The bottom image is an internet source of what I am trying to acheive.

I am trying to make a peice of text glow by going to Filters>Alpha to Logo>Neon, but after I do that The rest of it goes away (including the black backround) and on the right, the layers are no longer the normal rectangle, they are very short and long rectangles.

I created a gradient using the gradient tool. If you look at the image I supplied, you can see a clear line between the white background and the -what is supposed to be- white bg color of the gradient. Why is this not smoother?
Using gimp 2.8 for mac.

I am trying to create a vignette on an image and find that when I use a brush with a fuzzy edge the result is not what I'm looking for. There are these circles that are left behind where there should be a smooth transition. (See Attachment)

I used the free select tool to free select an area of an image that is not a square (odd shape), how do I make that selection a perfect square if pasted to new image or new layer??? rectangular would be fine too...

in CS6 13.0.4 x 64, the PDF process is iffy for me. Sometimes it's fine. But other times, an incomplete image results. Is this related to the overall type bugginess that Adobe recommends we fix (which I've not yet done)...?

I'm lazy, but also, I don't have a lot of confidence I'll do it correctly, and I have a myriad of deadlines every week.
While I've your eye, here's another question relating to the layers palette:
Layers sometimes stick to my curser and I can't unstick them until I go back to the palette and try to place them back where they orignally were. (I'll be really embarrassed if this is a new feature of CS6 that I've not figured out yet...)

how to make a layer cut from another pic look more part of the background it's being placed on. I try to keep the pics relatively the same size then I'll usually use quick selection tool and get the item outlined how I want, then adjust the "refine edge" settings and drag onto the new background. I can get it to look pretty good messing with the Enhance features including defringe layer and maybe mess with the erase tool a little to feather a little more, but it still seems to look a bit as though it's sitting on top..

Before I start looking for work on transforming PSD's into working websites, I would like to learn some of the functions and features of Photoshop Creative Suite 5.1.
I recently learned:
Ctrl + Win + Click on Desired Layer… To make a selection around the layer
Then I clicked on, "Refine Edge"… I was able to make a perfect selection around what I wanted using this feature. Very nice, by the way.
There were multiple layers, I merged the visible ones to make one layer. All of the stuff that makes up the banner, at the top of the page. My question is:
Can I make a selection around multiple layers, i.e. buttons, other pictures, etc.?
Side note question:
Does the document size have any effect on the overall size? Meaning: let's say that banner up top is 775 pixels across & maybe about 450 pixels tall… That's about the size of the image (the selected layer). The document size is laying on, is also 775 pixels across… But, 950 pixels tall. Will that document size have any effect on load time for a webpage?

way of making a merged copy of a number of layers?
I know the Alt/Ctrl/Shft/E shortcut, but this requires turning evertything off except the layers to be merged. In a large doc with some layers already turned off, turning everything on and off quickly is not always straight forward.
Is there a way of merging linked layers perhaps?

my gimp 2.8.6 makes majority normal layers turn into text layers..
Even if i "discard text information" from layer..and then save it as .xcf it doesnt work! Same layers appear as text layers when i open that .xcf Its not a big deal but it really slows me down when im working with layers..

I merged my layers down to scale to proportion and I thought I was done with the project, so I saved it and exported. I then learned that I did something incorrectly, so I went back to the project only to remember I merged the layers and I don't know how to undo that. How do you revert the layers back to layers?

I have a 3d scene (FBX) with a 3d camera, rendered 3d elements and filmed elements that need to be comped in a way that required some layers to respond to the 3d camera and some need to stay 2d. Because some of the 2d layers need to occlude layers in 3d space it is not practical to pre comp.
Is there way in Action to get a a layer to ignore a 3d camera or respond to a different camera? In AE for example you would toggle the 3d layer setting.
Also is there a way to make a layer auto orientate towards the camera?

So I decided to try my hand at making gifs and so I attempted to upload a video by going to file -> import -> video frames to layers. Before even letting my pick my video it comes up with an error message saying "could not complete the video frames to layers command because dynamiclink is not availible." I then tried file -> open -> and then selected the video and no matter what file type or size I chose I ended up with the same error message.
I looked this problem up and attempted some of the solutions but to no avail. I tried clearing my preferences and restarting photoshop many times in addition to restarting my computer. I also checked to make sure it wasn't being blocked by any firewalls and it wasn't. My opperating system is Windows 7 and I'm using photoshop cs6.

I got an irregular shaped image and I wish to get rid of the white canvas background underneath it.
I used lasso to outline the image.
However, when I right click, the lasso will not disappear.

I have scanned in some red coloured Chinese characters. They were on white paper. Now I want to make the 'white' disappear, because it ist not quite white, and when I print I get a shadowy block around the characters. If I save a .png, can I tell it to make white invisible, transparent?

I am trying to make an active button using the Create-Buttons-Round Button Script Fu menu item. I then select the colours I want, select Active and Pressed, and then hit create. The buttons look perfect, except for one thing ..I need the buttons without the Text. But if I enter no text in the text box when creating the button, I get this error:

I want to make a Christmas present spelling out the last name using individual photos of letters (see below). I would like the finished image to be 16x20, and I am going to upload it and have it printed at a photo developing shop. I'm not sure how to set this up in GIMP.
When I set up my new file, how many pixels should I make the new image, if my desired size is 16x20. I'm not sure how many dpi to use when I convert the inches to pixels. I read that 300 dpi is desired.
I was thinking about making image boxes for each letter in one layer and cutting and pasting each letter into the boxes. Is this possible or do I need to make a new layer for each photo?

I got Gimp 2.4. I am missing something. Every time I use a tool like rotate, it keeps the old picture there and turns a new image around. Then when I select another tool like resize, the image goes back/ to it's original position?

I am using Gimp 2.8 and i am trying to create my own brushes.I make the image i want and then i go to export it into my gimp brushes as name.gbr but and error pops up telling me i dont have permission.
This is the exact message.
"Saving 'C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\share\gimp\2.0\brushes\vic1.gbr' failed:
Could not open 'C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\share\gimp\2.0\brushes\vic1.gbr' for writing: Permission denied"

I'm trying to make my second ebook cover with GIMP, The ebook is 'The Man in Black' by Stanley J Weyman, and the cover must be 600px wide by 800px high - this fits most readers.
I have cropped a monochrome image to show the head and torso of the Man, and scaled it to 280*400px - though I may want to make it bigger later depending on how the cover looks.
I want this image to be on a black background, with the book title above the image and the author's name below - both in white.
The next step, I think, should be to make a layer 600*800px which I'll color black, then put the book title towards the top of the layer / image and the author's name towards the bottom.
Then I think I'll need to make a transparent area in the middle of this layer just big enough for the Man image to show through, then put the Man image on another layer, then combine the layers.

I need to make a poster in A1 size and I would like to know whether it is feasible to do so with GIMP, because I've seen the list of templates when making a new file and the size goes only up to A3 format.
I realize I can do the designing in A3 format and just print the A1 sheet, but I don't know if this will yield good results when considering the resolution and such.

I have the brush editor open, and I make the radius bigger and the circle in the brush editor gets bigger; but when I go to the picture, the circle for the eraser stays the same size. What am I missing here?

I have an image I'm making the background transparent on, but it's making part of the image itself transparent. Am I going to have to use the eraser in order to not make the part of the image transparent and just the background? Or is there another option I can use, cause the fuzzy tool isn't working out .
