GIMP :: How To Resize Rectangle
Jun 20, 2012
Just starting using GIMP today and want to do what I thought should be very simple. I have some images for which I have words that need replacing. I therefor want to take a slice of the background colour and copy that overtop of the text. I have tried to use the rectangle tool to copy and paste the slice. However I am unable to workout how to expand the slice (expand the width) overtop of the text.. I thought it should be a simple matter of dragging the rectangle out to the desired width. I have also tried changing the pixel amount in the Tool options section. how to expand a rectangle?

I draw a rectangle. I want that rectangle to be longer, so I drag one side. Why does the other side move a little? I can't think of an instance where this would be useful behavior.
Here's the rectangle:
Here is what it does when I drag:
Notice the outline preview of how big the rectangle will be. On the left side, It has moved considerably from it's original position. Why? Why on earth would I ever want that and is there a way to make it stop?

how to select and modify an EXISTING rectangle (not create a new one)? I drew a rectangle with rounded corners, and now I would like to modify the radius of the corners.
I've tried using the Rectangle Select tool to reselect the existing rectangle, but Gimp only lets me create a new rectangle.

I'm trying to make an eye texture and I have a rectangle texture that i would like to paint in a clockwise fashion, I know that I could just copy and paste + rotate each time but I was wondering if there was a faster way.

I'm trying to crop a rectangle that is slightly off square, so the cropping rectangle is either clipping part of the image or not enough of the empty space. Is there a way to clip a non-rectangular area?
The images are actually parts of a map as a specific projection, and need to be clipped non-rectangular so they match up.

I've created a panel using the rounded rectangle method.
My panel is transparent on the background and I don't like how the edges of it are shown (too rough). I want to add semi transparent pixels after them (a kind of manual anti-aliasing)
This is my panel:

How I would like it to look like:
How can achieve it?

I’m trying to figure out if there is a way to scale a “border” around a rectangle or square? Or, put another way, keeping an image the same size, but enlarge an inner rectangle or square without cropping the “border.” To try and add context, imagine a bezel used for an arcade machine. A border with a cut-out in the middle to view the screen. Imagine you wanted to preserve the information on the bezel border, but increase the size of the cut out.

I need to transform a rectangle part of my picture to a triangle, linearly, only with horizontal distortion, keeping vertical positions in place. (a rectangle to a triangle standing on its side, by moving the top corners to one point).
I tried the Cage Transform: the top of the picture seems good, but it also distorts the bottom line in this case. Other tools seem not suitable at all.

In Photoshop, when I make a selection of an image, the rectangle selection tool stays within the bounds of the image (layer). I would like to do this in GIMP, but the selection is allowed to extend beyond the photo, and basically select blank space.
Basically, I would like to do this so that I can have a fixed ratio box and be able to move it to the very edge of the image without having to worry about making sure the cursor lands exactly on the edge. I'm sure it is a simple option to select somewhere

I'm brand new to GIMP, I just downloaded it to get into some simple pixel art.
I was going fine, but I've run into a problem. I'm trying to select a portion of my image using the rectangle tool, and then move it to a different location using the move tool. However, when clicking and dragging the move tool it shifts the entire image, not just the portion I have selected. I read in the FAQ that you need to press "Enter" to finalise the selection before you move it, but even doing that doesn't work.
This was working fine for me earlier, I'm not sure what I've done to break it. I've tried resetting my tool preferences back to defaults but that has not worked.

I'm coming from paint.net, which is bloating tif images to the extreme......I work on tif's for work (engineering revisions) as well as multi-page tifs.Needless to say, I need to get up to speed on Gimp as fast as possible, as work places don't like a learning curve The image editor used by others is atrocious.
I see the Gimp will open multi-page tifs, but how do I save them back as multi-page? Or is this not possible?
And how do I go about drawing a filled rectangle? A good deal of my work is digitally "whiting out" things on technical drawings. I see the brush tool, but not a filled rectangle.

These gradients in gimp are really hard to figure out (not saying other things seem easy to me), however I'm sure if one knows what to do, they can solve many problems.
I had that screenshot of a text list:
And I wanted to make it fade away from the highlighted line:
However, with the blend tool, this is actually impossible or really really hard, because I can't aim it so preciselly.

I am having lots of difficulty with this. I'm trying to create a rectangle that is transparent with rounded corners but I need the rounded rectangle outlined. Now I know how to create a rounded rectangle what I am doing for that is the following;
creating an image, selecting add alpha chanel, then selecting rounded rectangle, invert then cut.
The problem is I need the rounded rectangle outlined. When I try to use the paintbrush with stroke it outlines the image but when I go to save it it saves the whole image including the cut corners.
In essence. I just want to make a rounded transparent rectangle. Then have it outlined. This would be for a web page.

With Gimp you can round the corners of a square or rectangle using two functions: the problem is that doing so all four corners will be rounded, while I am interested in only the two upper corners. Here's an example of what I would do.

I've been wondering how do you get the rectangle select tool to move the image, like in mspaint whenever I use it, it just moves the rectangle square and not the selected part of the image.

Recently upgraded to Gimp 2.8 for the single window mode (which worksbrilliantly in Ubuntu, especially with the HUD).
But the Rectangle Select Tool has a new - but odd - behaviour. When I drawa selection, and then add to that selection, a new "square" is position atmy cursor. (See attached screenshot.) This didn't happen in 2.6 and is abit irritating because it disorientates me slightly, especially if I'mworking quickly.
Is there a way to turn that off (or revert it to the 2.6 way)?

I'm using Gimp 2.8 to change print size to 6 x 4. Original image is 1600 x 1200. So I go to „Print Size“ and change size in inches to 6 x 4 (naturally unlinking „chain“ symbol). I then save the image but when I reopen its at 6 x 4.5 and of course it prints this size.

Using GIMP 2.8.10 in Windows 8.1. The two default dialogs open are Layers and Brushes. The Layers dialog takes most of the space. I want to shrink it vertically but when I try to drag up the cursor with the two vertical arrows it moves by itself without resizing the dialog. When I do the same horizontally it works fine. I would like to see less of the Layers dialog and more of Brushes dialog. How do I do this?

The new cage tool is fantastic to solve the following problem.
I take a photo with the smartphone of a book page. I need two hands for this. The page does not lies flat (see [URL].... because no more hands available to keep the page flat (and no glass sheet at hand...). Using the cage tool with 3 nodes above and 3 below the text produces an acceptable result see [URL]....
Question: Is there any better method? Any GIMP plugin or even Android app to solve this problem?
I can trace the deformed rectangle that enclose the page text, but then I don't know how to pass this info to the cage tool and ask to make it a real rectangle.

I usually plug a drawing tablet and it works great with GIMP on a Ubuntumachine.
What I want to ask is this:
I want to plug a mouse. Normally movements either of the pen on the tabletor of the mouse are mapped to the cursor.I want to keep the mouse plugged while unattaching it from the cursor. Sothe cursor is only tablet driven. Then I want the brush size to be driven by the Y value of the mouse, whileI drow with the tablet.
Maybe editing the input devices editor? Or will I have to operate on Xserver also?

My end goal is to create simple bitmaps that only contain a bit of text in them in black and white.
To do this I am creating a new image and some default size. I then add the text , set the background colour to black and the text colour to white and create my text.I am using the snap to canvas edge and sit it up in a corner.I then want to resize the who canvas to be the same size as the text block created and save the image. How to do this?I have seen the crop tool and can select the area I want but cant figure out how to save this as a new canvas/image sized only to the size of the text.
