Smoke 2013 looks amazing, but I can't manage to make it work both at my place and at my office. There is a problem with the stone + wire. I'm sure it has to do with the network settings or the host files, but I'm not familiar with these notions.
View 6 RepliesI just want to import some media (and do a conform) via the network. I can see everything, but it won't connect. I also don't get any error messages. I already restarted all components and they all show a green status. I don't know what else to do....

there is a Folder with MXF-Files on our Network that I am accessing trough the gateway. The folder contains 1600 Files. The Browser Display Options are set to Titles. Smoke needs approximately 20 Minutes to show the content of this folder. Every other software on the machine does this within one second. why that is and is there something I can do to speed it up?

I see that there is a short cut that saves with User or Project in the network module. But it doesn't work!! At least for me. I had this work a few versions back but it wasn't consistent, which was weird.

Is it possible to get a Wiretap Gateway running on a Mac to show network volumes mounted on it?
I'm trying to get a gateway setup so I can get ProRes into my Smoke. Everything is running, I can see my "Helper Monkey" from the MediaHub in the network, and browse to it.. but all I see is the System volume, although I have 2 Windows shares mounted from a server. I'd like to avoid having to copy all the media locally to the Mac HD first, and just let it read from over the network off another workstation. I realize the performance implications, but I'd like to use this to create cache media on the Smoke so I don't care much.
I have not licensed the gateway yet since I was just seeing if I can get it to work at all first (I'm actually trying running the Mac in a VM because my actual Mac Pro is old and won't run 64-bit.
does smoke have a feature to do 'time offsetting' ? in connect fx (not in action), i have a clip and applied some fx node like blur , CC etc. Now i want to offset or slip the network (media and fx nodes), so not only the media but also all the keyframes from all the fx node. Can i do this ? i use foundry Nuke where this can be done easily. How about in smoke ? So maybe like attaching a 'timeoffset' node to the network.

The problem that as soon as i choose 'colour source', for whatever reason.... the background (desktop) become darker, so whatever i pick from background will be invalid color.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a single frame clip in my library, i want to put this clip into my timeline and i want it to be 10 seconds. I can just easily in/out in timeline and 'overwrite'. i don't like where i'm repeating a single frame and then still need to render it as 10 seconds clip.
This should be done like 'repeat' in the desktop tools. So in timeline when doing 'overwrite' , Smoke has to be smart to detect 1 frame edit so it just need to 'repeat' it not to 'timewarp' it.
And the another BAD thing , i can't have 'repeat' tool inside cfx . why ? so have to repeat the clip outside the cfx and go back into cfx.
Is there a way to mange all of the renders and projects from one place or view?

I searched through all the key short cuts, looked through the user guide and I'm at a loss where you can nudge a clip back and forth by single frames. I saw you can hold 'D" and SLIP the clips one frame at a time, but not move them outright.
So, since nudging is one of the absolute most basic requirements of any editor, I know it's in there. But alas, they hid it too well. here it might be?
Maybe hiding next to a trim mode I don't see where I can see how my slips and slides affect the area around the clip?
How to bypass/disable multiple nodes without have to do it one by one ?
The other strange thing is when i think i can do it by define a new hotkey for disable/enable the bypass button, i found that everytime i change a hotkey for the bypass button, it will apply only to current node. So do i have to set hotkey for every single node ?? and of course everytime i create new cfx , the hotkey will be reset.
Is it possible to render timeline effects in the background on a single machine given the right licenses? I'm finding that CFX in particular take a lot of time to render.
Is there anyway to speed things up? Do multiple graphics cards work? I have a Quadro 4000 and some kind of ATi card installed (in a mac pro) - does it make a difference which one the monitor is plugged into?
I'm using fcp hotkey , by default the 'drag copy (single frame)' is mapped to ' alt-c' . Normally this will work fine. But in some case where a cfx clip is selected or my time indicator is parked on top of a cfx clip in active timeline , then do 'alt-c' will give an error message "connectfx cannot be modified inside the containers. Proceed with edit ? "
So to solve this temporarily, i have to first deselect the cfx clip or move the current positioner on top of a non-cfx clip.
Part of my daily workflow is to export a single frame of my edit for client approvals. In the export menu, is there a way to NOT have Smoke add the zeros to the end of the file name?
Also, what's the best (fastest) way to export a single frame? The way I'm doing it now is that I'm copying a segment to the the desktop then going into tools then using the repeat function. is there a better way?

Can I extract one of the 60 licenses from the flexlm manager and transfer it permanently to the notebook? If yes, is there a special software for it or is there a documentation, a "how-to"?
I know that the AJA Kona 3 card has 2 outputs. Can Smoke send one eye to one channel and the other eye to the other of the Kona 3 card? Dual Stream output is what I am really getting at.

1. If I have a layered Photoshop file or png with an alpha channel (a still frame lower third), I see that I can import it as a multi layered clip, but what is the best way to have it in the sequence to show up properly?
2. If I have a QuickTime in animation format or Pro Res4444 format with an embedded alpha, how can I import that file to show and cut it on a top layer to animate above my video?

In Combustion, you would draw a selection and then apply an operator above the selection to achieve this. I don't see a similar selection tool function in Smoke, but I imagine you could achieve the same effect by duplicating a layer and using a Gmask via the Wipe timeline FX.does Smoke not have a selection tool similar to Combustion?

Same experience with Smoke 2012 on my MacBook pro 13"".
Is that normal?
I have RED footage which I exported as EXR. When I import them back in, they look exactly like the RED footage. But when I import the EXR in Fusion, export it back out, and then import that EXR into Smoke, it looks brighter, although I didn't change anything in Fusion. (when I compare the EXR from Smoke and the EXR from fusion in my finder on my desktop, they look exactly the same). So what is Smoke doing with the "foreign" exr on import?I was also playing with the LUT settings. I get a result which is close, but I need to be exact.
