AutoCad 2D :: UNITS Command And Dimension
Apr 19, 2012
If I type the command UNITS and change the insertion scale to millimeter (mine was inches), what is going to happen? At first i used inches to draw 5 inches line and the get the dimension of it, second i drew again a line using the millimeter in units, but when i measured it still it is exact to the first line that i draw.

We are having an issue with Dimensioning and the Primary Units not maintaining the correct value. We use metric so the multiplier of 25.4 or .039370079 for Dim Scale Linear would be used in our Dimension Styles depending on if we are drawing in model space or annotating in paper space. We have created specific Dim Styles for Model and Paper space. Every so often some of us will us the Dim Style for paper space and a metric unit would be shown. When we go into the properties of that dimension and change the Dim Scale Linear to 1 it shows as a different dimension then it actually is. After looking at the correct dimenion, we noticed the Dim Scale Linear shows .9449 but gives the correct dimension.
Note: We are drawing in Metric a multiplier of 25.4, our dimensions are done in english. A scale factor of .039370079 is used to accomplish this.
There is a simple fix with Match Properties but it still doesn't answer why our dimension show up wrong with a different multiplier for Dim Scale Linear.

I'm having an issue with dimensions changing from when I save the drawing to when I reopen it.
I'm using AutoCAD Mechanical 2009, exclusively in 2D. I save drawings in AutoCAD 2000/LT 2000 Drawing format to maintain backwards compatibility with our legacy documents which are still in regular use.
The exact process is:
1. Create dimension in existing drawing.
2. Set units of dimension. Typically this is fractional.
3. Save and close drawing.
4. Reopen drawing, and all of the dimensions units are set to decimal to the fourth decimal point.
If I interact with the dimension in any way, it will return to its set unit. For example, if I double click on it to bring up the Power Dimensioning window and just click Okay without altering anything, it will change back to its set unit. Likewise, if I move the dimension itself it will return to its set unit as well.
So far my solution has been to simply select the entire drawing at once, then move it X units one way, then X units back. The move back and forth will return all the dimensions to their set units.
Obviously this is not ideal, especially when sending drawings to co-workers who are unaware of the issue or even using different versions of AutoCAD.

I have a drawing from a contractor that is dimensioned in metric units. I have been tasked with converting the displayed units to inches for our machine shop. I have tried to display alternate units but they don't appear, yes, I did check the "display alternate units" box. I am using AutoCAD 2013.

After installation of the AutoCAD 14 and setting up drawing parameters to support the .dwt template, from the Format menu, tried initiating the units, points, table style, and layer states command but get a prompt for indicating for example: "units" unknown command, "DDTYPE" unknown comand, etc.. What setting do I have to adjust in order for these commands to work?

I don't know if this has been reported but I found out today when working on a web design (hence working in the new unit - pixels) that you can't actually use the Dimension tools for measuring pixels. That's a pity because often you need to work with exact pixel dimensions when making websites and here the Dimension tools could come in very handy. It seems counting pixels by hand is a bit old-fashioned. Of course you can use calculations, but still...

Usually when we enter RECTANGLE command, AUTOCAD will ask us to specify first corner point, then it will ask coodinate of second corner point.
Can the RECTANGLE command be set to straightaway insert dimension instead of coordinates?
Previous computer I used could do this, but this new computer can't. I don't know where to set it. Both computer using the same version of AUTOCAD LT2013. I reckon it could be set, but how?

I have to deal with the plans of others, some who change the dimensions through text formatting that I can see are fake or incorrect. I used to have a command that would detect the ACTUAL dimension but I can't seem to find it in ACAD 2010. find the command to restore the true dimensions?

All I want to do is rotate one dimension. I want to leave all the others alone.
When I am editing my drawing, I double click on the dimension and get the diag box and unfortunately the rotate dimension command along with the degree box is grayed out.

I am familiar with the LAYMCUR command to select an object and make that layer current. I am hoping there is a command to select text or a dimension and make that style current. I can't fine such a command. I have to select a text, see what style shows up in the box at top, go to the text style box, find the style and make it current. It seems like unneeded steps. It's simple for layers, why not text and dimensions?

I'm trying to get the dimension text that I pull out to the side closer to the actual dimension marks. The 2 1/2" and 2" shown have a minimum distance they can get toward their dimensions. I would like it to be about half of what it is, but so far I haven't been able to find the property that changes that.

Is it possible to override a dimension with some sort of formula or function that relates to the length of the dimension?
A simple linear scaling might be possible by inventing a new unit with the appropriate conversion ratio, but that wouldn't work. What I need for the dimension to display a length 400 less than the actual length.

Is there a way to override a dimension and have it shown as a GD&T Basic dimension. I can override a dimension with the text option but not with a box around the letter. It sounds strange to do this but the letter represents a dimension in a chart format that are Basic dimensions.

I want to insert dimension lines on this project. But instead of having an actual dimension I'd like it just to be a letter that refers back to a chart of possible dimensions for that element. How do I do this? I'm using AutoCad Architecture 2012.

I'm inserting dimensions and the tics keep coming out huge and not on the dimension line, in fact there's one on either side 20 ft out. If I change the drawing scale in the tab at a the bottom the tics get smaller and closer in, but they are still off the dimension string by a long shot.

I am currently writing a series of routines for setting the layers for text, leaders and dimension commands. The end goal is a system where any annotation command sets the correct layer for the duration of the command, then reverts back to the layer that was active before the command.
I have managed to complete all the code, and it appears to be working fine, I just have one question: I have used -layer "m" "Lay_name" etc... for all layer setting commands, rather than any code to see if the layer exists already. In my limited testing this seems to be suitable, nothing that exists on that layer seems to be affected.
I know how to write code to determine if the layer exists already and set the layer instead, but so far it seems unnecessary??
