AutoCAD Inventor :: Shrink Part In Middle?
Jan 9, 2013
I have a part which is lets say 10ft long. Now I need to modify that to be 9.5ft. Is there a simple way to remove that .5ft from the center of the part?
I just need a way to cut out a .5ft section in the middle and then put the two remaining pieces back together. Doing this would be much easier than editing the sketches for the part, especially since I may have to change the amount that is cut out and that would change the number of holes and features.
Attached is a picture of the parts i have to edit and some lines to show the section that needs to get removed.

Is there any way to dimension my features, whether it's a sketch or using the hole feature, to either the middle of my part or to a middle plane I have?
I am wanting a group of tapped holes to be the same from the middle of my part, regardless of what the overall size of the part is. How can I dimension like this?

What is the best setting for shrink wrapping an assembly?
I've found shrink wrapping it as a surface causes problems with the video card when rotating the model and placing views on a drawing.

I have a part that I want to have made by rapid prototyping that will in turn be used as a pattern for casting alloy metal parts. I need to apply a factor to the part to compensate for the shrinkage that occurs when a metal part is poured in a molten stage and will cool to slightly smalller dimensions than the mold. Is there an easy way to do this without having to recreate the part to slightly larger dimensions?

I have a part that was sent to me from a vendor. It was a large 80MB part so I put it in an assembly file and shrinkwrapped it to reduce the size of it. Now it is transparent and I can not figure out how to turn it off.

I would like to layer them in such a way that the orage circle below is put in front of the green circle. Essentially, I need to select only the part of the orange circle and bring it to the front while leaving the other part of the circle alone. Can this be done in Illustrator?
In summary, this is what I am trying to accomplish: Green over blueBlue over yellowYellow over orangeOrange over Green
Also, is there a way to use a tool inside of illustrator to arrange the locations so they are all 100% perfectly alligned and meeting in the middle without "eyeballing" it?

What is the purpose of creating/using shrink wrap substitutes? I thought that it reduces the file size, but noticed that some files turn to be larger after shrink wrapping it. ?

I am a tech illustrator taking our engineering models and creating dumb solids for architects to drop into CAD drawings. When I take an assembly and try to shrinkwrap it (with the Solid Bodies option) the file still has all the internal ribs and fillets and stand-outs. I have created extrudes to fill gaps and holes and even tried to create single pieces to assemble later to no avail.

About Substitute Shrink wrap parts, it doesn't automatic update when I use UPDATE or even REBUILD ALL inside the LOD with it, even if I don't break the link with the assembly it doesn't update, so I have to go in each assembly with Substitute parts ( with are many in huge projects) and then verify with "Check for updates" in the correct LOD (which in some cases are more than one per assembly). Is there a way to update them direct from the main assembly with rebuild all or something like that ?

I am using ilogic to modify the boxes:
I have a one rectangular box in that box again small rectangular boxes in this my problem is when iam giving value for smaller boxes(all boxes height) more than outer box how it will show the message box and how to stop the code.
d1=big box height
d2,d3,d4---small boxes height
I am writing code like this:
IF((d2+d3+d4)=<d1) then
Msg.box(give correct value)
end if
here it's showing the message and it,s not stoping the program.

I've been researching this all day and I can't find anything that works for me. Is there a way to change the middle mouse button from "Pan" to "Rotate" my model? Currently, I hold "Shift" while holding down the middle mouse button and that rotates my model. Can I incorporate that into my middle mouse button somehow without having to buy a 3D Connexion mouse?

So recently I started making something in Inventor, and like most programs you can press the middle mouse button and it will pan or orbit. Well I'm pretty sure that in the past if I pressed the middle mpuse button it would pan or orbit. But now it is zooming all for the model, and only when it is zoomed to the whole model does it let me pan or rotate. If I were to zoom in on a line for example and wanted to pan to the right, it zooms me out to the whole model, and then I can pan. I have tried multiple mouse buttona all combinations of shift ctrl and alt and middle mosue, but nothing is working. How can I make it so it does not zoom all when clicking the middle mouse?

I use inventor to draw cars for competitions. They are made from 2x2x12 balsa wood blocks.
Is there a way to center the drawing directly in the middle of the page?
What type of file would i need to model the car in in order to have it cut out using a cnc router/five axis mill? Would it be the same for wheels (made out of 2mm plastic)?

I set up our company log which gets embossed on most parts as a sketch block in an .ipt. The .ipt contains nothing but the sketch block. To use it, the designer only needs to derive the Logo.ipt file into their part and then use the scale setting to set the derived block to the desired size for that part. The result is a scalable set of line geometry that can easily be used for extrusion or emboss that is standard for all users. It works beautifully, that is until you try to use it in a sheet metal part in 2012.
For some reason, when this same part, which works perfectly in normal parts, is derived into a sheet metal part an error pops up stating that, "Selected part does not have any geometry that can be derived." Say what?
I was able to find a workaround by directly copying the block into the sheet metal part, but you no longer have the ability to go back and scale it if needed. Even more strange, when the block was copied over, it could not be deleted from the new part.
Is this just a bug with 2012? Why does it work in a normal part but not sheet metal?

The one below doesn`t work.

I would like to simplify this assembly into one seamless part for FEM calculation:The assembly consists out of parts that, in reality, will be welded together. Due to their form, there is no way to place them exactly onto each other, therefore there are slight gaps between the parts:
Now when I try to merge the assembly into one part via "simplify" --> "create simplified part" and choose "single solid body with seams between planar faces merged", Inventor does not fill these gaps (even though it displays only one part in the bottom right corner of my window). Unfortunately, the remaining gaps brings "contact" problems in the FEM simulation.
how to close the gaps and really merge the assembly into one part?

I have a part that has protrusions. When i mate that part up to another part that second part needs to have cutouts/holes to receive those protrusions.
i mainly use it in sheetmetal parts. and use the rectangular protrusions on de contour to mate up with corresponding cutouts in the other sheet. this works with positioning and also makes for a nice weld spot/area.
But also for making holes to accommodate a mold pin used in custom punch dies. I want the intervening part to receive a corresponding (propperly tolleranced) hole automatically. Much like a bolted connection does.
same for parts like circlips. i want them to automatically generate the seat in the part it's mated to. Rather than using the axle generator.
Ofcourse one can place the parts and do an in assembly interpart projection and go from there, but i want the part to generate the (predifined) modification to the other part. It would save time and also reduces problems as the parts are moved about or even removed.

In previous releases (2009 i think) when i converted a standard part to a sheet metal part i could recall all the sheet metal styles by linking back to the sheet metal template (i can't remember exactly how this was done, but it was possible with one operation)
In 2011 i canot find a quick way of doing this, it looks like i have to open the sheet metal template and export each different style (about 40 of them) and then import each one into the converted part. am i missing something? is there a simpler way similar to how it used to be done? Why have Autodesk made this more difficult?
As it stands at the moment it would be quicker for me to remodel the parts from scratch using the sheet metal template. I know this is the obvious solution, but seems strange to change something that worked well to something that doesn't!

The simple question is… how can we insert a step (stp) part into an existing part file?
The story behind the question is this:
Normally when we get a step file assembly from a customer, if the part has changed, we put our part into Old Versions and save their new step file as our ipt number and replace it in our assembly file. With Vault, in order for us to maintain the history of the part files, we need to keep the original file so we can’t just delete it or replace it, so now we need to figure out how to get a step file into an ipt. The Import command on the Manage tab (with 2013 at least?) does not allow import of stp files just yet.
The only other option I can think of is to put the original part into an assembly with the step file, create a copy of the step information in the part file and use it to recreate the new (step based) part.
