AutoCAD Inventor :: Negative Extrusions Lead To Mesh Failure?

Jul 10, 2012

I've modelled part of a ship's deck, it consists of rather simple geometrich shapes(Plates, knee brackets and profiles).

However, when i model the assembly and do some negative extrusions in order to get the model how i want it, it leads to a face failure during mesh generation.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Creating Content Center Extrusions

Sep 20, 2013

I am attempting to add some of our custom extrusions to the content center but want them to act the same way Inventor's "default" files act. By that I mean, if I make a new assembly and pick a piece of Angle, for example, to place from the content center, as long as I choose "as standard" and give it a length, the part shows up without me having to save anything new. I can then copy or drag in a second instance of that same angle, right click it and "change length", and the length of just that ONE changes. In the tree on the right the result is:

-DIN 59 370 S S 10x 2 - 600:1
-DIN 59 370 S S 10x 2 - 2000:1

With 600 and 2000 being lengths. That's standard Inventor behavior with their standard parts. When I try to publish my own extrusion, I guess I don't have the right key columns or something. I place MY extrusion and input a length, etc. Then when I copy it and try to "change length", nothing happens and it is named part number:2 in the tree.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Frame Generator Multiple Extrusions

Sep 23, 2013

I have an aluminum frame system that is comprised of 9 seperate extrusions, what is the best way to handle this? I would like to get a BOM that shows each each seperate extrusion with cut length.

Must I author each of the 9 shapes separately , then separately apply them onto the frame and then adjust each of the end conditions accordingly?

For initial experimentation I created an .ipt in which I have a sketch of all 9 shapes, I extruded them all separately (multibody) then authored the combination of all shapes as one frame gen shape..

This allows me to easily apply the member and create the appropriate end conditions, but does not give me an accurate BOM.

Is there a simple way of selecting them all and moving them, or do I have to do it one at a time?

AutoCAD Inventor :: Matching Mesh Of Hole / Mesh Of Round Bar

Apr 9, 2012

I have an assembly that has somewhere a hole with a round bar that exactly fits in this hole. But when meshing the assembly, the mesh of the hole and the mesh of the bar are different.

The result is that the different parts do only seem to touch each other at the edges of the mesh, resulting in high stresses.

See picture.

I tried to made a derived part from the assembly, but that one does not finish meshing. After 48 hours, the progress bar is still half way. While the one above did finish in about 15 minutes. What can I do to make the meshes match?

AutoCAD Inventor :: ILogic Catastrophic Failure

Oct 20, 2011

I have a rule controlled .idw with several rules that call each other and various API macros with views and partslists that all have their own rules.

I want the drawing to close itself without saving the changes after it's done executing all of its code (the end product is written to an excel sheet). Everything works beautiful, and the drawing does close itself like it's supposed to, except for some strange reason it throws an error message when it closes.  I've tried a few different methods of closing it.  The code below is what I want to use.  I've tried it with close set to false as well (saving changes).  I've also tried calling an API macro that's pretty similar looking. They all have the same result. The rest of the code executes just fine, and no errors are thrown if I comment out the code letting the document stay open.

I've even tried making a brand new virgin part, writing a rule with just the below code and executing it. The only difference is the error window is thrown from Inventor instead of windows.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Negative Angle Parameters

Imagine I create a line in a sketch angled at 12 degrees (above the x axis) . Then I create another line in the sketch angled at 12 degrees (below the x axis)

When I list the parameters programatically both give me a value in radians of +12 degrees.

So where is the specification of the angle direction stored? As a user I cannot input a negative angle, but I can see that it is negative. But how does a program know the true value of an angular parameter? Currently I get +12 for both lines.

The attached part has some bad work features on it, but I don't care about that (easy fix). It also contains a rule that simply changes the material from "P AND O" (pickles & oiled) to "201 S/S", for some reason the faulty work geometery causes this rule to throw an "unspecified error". If you delete the bad work geometry the rule runs fine.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Negative Mass Calculation In 2013?

Nov 22, 2012

My company recently installed Inventor 2013. In previous versions we used a part with negative density similar to seawater to calculate submerged weight and CoG.

In IV 2013, it seems that the ability to calculate negative mass is not longer available.

This is how it worked in pre 2013 IV, when I could specify a negative density.

What I have is a spool made of steel. This spool is modelled as an iAssembly with four configurations:

-In air, empty

-In air, filled with glycol

-Submerged, empty

-Submerged, filled with Glycol

For this example, I now need three parts:

-Steel Pipe

-Glycol derived from the inside volume the pipe

-Seawater buoyancy derived from the outside volume of the pipe.

Each part has its own density, and the assembly weight and CoG correspond to the assembly configuration (with or without glycol) and environment (in air or submerged).

The seawater buoyancy represents the water displaced by the total spool assembly, regardless of the contents. To achieve correct weight in the submerged state, the buoyancy material has to have a negative density.

I do not want to make any of the mass parameters static, and I also fear that the CoG might not be updated correctly when using that method.

As I no longer can define a negative density, any optional method to achieve this without overriding the mass value.

I have completed the sketch seen in red and extruded it to prove that the loop is complete but when I try to reverse the extrusioni to cut from the lid dragging down the arrow as an example, it turns the effected area a darker red than normaly seen when you cut something. When I let go of the left mouse button it pops back up to the original surface having no effect and refuses to go benieth it and when I apply I get the error seen at the bottom of the attatched image. I do this sort of cutting often instead of digging down to the root sketch then dealing with the ripple effect of the changes we want to make.

The issue is that the 3D sketch for the sweep gets broken going to/from the configuration. The path is generated from an extruded cut that is also supressed.

I tried to recreate the sweep using a different sketch, but that wasn't successfull.

Is this a bug or is there a different aproach I can use?

AutoCAD Inventor :: How To Use STL And Mesh Files

Sep 7, 2011

We are trying to use 3d scanned data in Inventor to facilitate our design process. We don't need perfect and good looking 3d scanned models ready to produce, but we need some accurate measurements from holes and faces that we can use to design our own products.

So mine problem is: How I can get those scanned meshes to Inventor that I can get some dimensions from it, project some geometry to my sketches, add some constraints between scanned surface and mine designs, etc...?

I have tried some Add-Ins like Sycode's STLImport and Sycode's software called Mesh To Solid to get those mesh files open and I can open those "converted" files in Inventor, but those are only some kind of surfaces called Composite or Surface which consist of tiny triangles.

As you may know that once something is scanned, it becomes a mesh object with many triangle faces. This is more evident on curved parts of the object.

Is there any way to smooth the surface so the curves do no look like very small step trying to form a curve? If the surface does not become smoothed out so its seen as one surface then I will have to adjust every small face at a time?

AutoCAD Inventor :: Making A Shell Of A Mesh?

Dec 22, 2012

I am trying to make a shell of a mesh feature after I have upscaled it.

I do not think the regular shell technique will work as my mesh feature has hundreds of surfaces. So, I decided to open the file with my part in it and then derive the same part but a little bigger using the derive button. I would then subtract out the smaller, original, one to make a shell of the bigger, derived one.

Unfortunately, when I use this method to upscale, the 2 objects are not concentric so I cannot make the uniform shell that I want to.

I have attached the file of my mesh feature in case you want to see it. not that you will have to convert the object you see on my file into a base feature before doing anything with it. I did not because it would have made the file to big to attach.
