AutoCAD Inventor :: Moving Imported Part To The Origin

Jun 21, 2013

We have imported an AutoCAD 3D model into Inventor and the process generates many individual Inventor parts which are placed in a new Inventor assembly. The parts are all unconstrained in the assembly but spacially positioned relative to each other as they were in the AutoCAD file.

We want to create a new, empty, assembly and place the individual parts one by one into the new assembly constraining them appropriately as we go. This way we can develop a more logical set of sub-assemblies and have the parts more intelligently connected.

So to the point of my question, at last!. Each individual part, generated from the import, contains just a single body. There is no sketch or any features. The part's origin is at the point of the original AutoCAD model's origin. All of the imported parts will have the same origin point. We want to move the part's single body in space to align with the part's origin point and planes. This way when we re-build the assembly we can use each part's origin planes when constraining the part.

There doesn't appear to be any way of constraining or 'snapping' a part's body in space to the origin planes.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Move And Rotate Origin Of Imported Step File To Match Parent

Mar 8, 2013

URL...how to move the origin of a part when you want a common origin for everything. in iv2012 you also get angles about axis, in greyed out boxes.

In a test assembly I can get the offsetting to work, but not the rotations. The part I want to edit origin of is rotated in all three axis.

AutoCAD Inventor :: How To Move Part To WCS Origin

May 10, 2013

I'm currently designing a frame for a geodesic dome. I have created a wireframe from an excel sheet (I calculated the vertices in a c# program) and added this to my 5-edges-corner part as derived part.

I used the wireframe to create the part that can be seen in the attached picture (basically its a 5 sided cylinder and i used layers which i generated from the wireframe to cut away the top bits).

Now because the wireframe has its origin in the WCS origin, the part isn't centered in the WCS. If I use the "move body" tool to move the part, the layer that creates the cut is not moved as well and the cuts disappear. Also the rotation is kinda messed up.

My first idea was to define a UCS and use that to replace the WCS but apparently, that's not possible in Inventor 2014.

I would like to know, whether there is a way to make the cuts permanent and independent of the layer (which is dependent on the wireframe which i want to delete anyways as soon the part is done). And what the best way would be to move the part to the WCS origin.

PS: The screenshot is all in german.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Updating Imported Part

Dec 17, 2013

A customer sent me a .step file.  In order to produce the part that I need, I wanted to add some machining to his original part. Os I derived in his part and then added the features that I needed. Just a few tapped holes in one side.

Now, my customer made a few changes to his original part (added some detail) and he has sent me his new .stp file. I did not think it would be any problems if I just overwrote the original stp file with the new one.  But, if I do that, when I open my part, Inventor complains that the updated part is part is not usable.

I tried saving the imported file as a .ipt and then bringing that into an assembly and doing the machining there. But, now when I replace the imported file with the updated version, my features fail.

Is there a workflow that will allow me to update the part that is derived into another part?

AutoCAD Inventor :: Imported Part Shows I In Browser?

Mar 22, 2012

When I bring in a .sat file, I see these little "i" in the browser.  The red Cross is dimmed.  If I hover over the icon, it doesnt tell me anything.  I can right click on Base2 and choose edit solid, and the "i" goes away, but something is still not right.  I know something is wrong, because the mass is not correct for this part.

Notice the green check by "Base 3"? After I edit "Base 2", I do not have a check by it.

How do I get this to report the mass correcly.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Making Support For Imported Part?

Feb 14, 2013

I am looking at building a support for a customers part.  Trouble is the part is curves and surfaces.  Part doesnt have too many "flat" sides to it.  I am struggling with how to get what I need.  In this video, I am showing how the part will move onto the support (support is clear blue).

I created an assembly, then derived the iam into a part... subtracting out where the part will sit in the support. The problem I am having is removing the material so the part can move into the support from above.

Here is a picture of the support with the part subtracted out.  I would post this, but the filesize is pretty large (18mb).

I cant seem to find a way to trim this off.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Controlling Name In Assembly Browser Of Imported Part?

May 23, 2012

I have a browser display issue that occurrs sometimes when imported parts are inserted into an assembly model.  Before dropping some imported parts into my assembly model I changed the filename to something corresponding to our part numbering system.  When the part is dropped into the model, the name of the instance displayed in the assembly browser is the same as that originally used by the originator of the model.

I know I can change the name in the browser by editing the name field in the occurrance tab; but I'd need to do this for each instance.  What iproperty field (or other property field) should I edit at the part level so that the revised part name is used in the assembly browser whenever that part is inserted into an assembly?

AutoCAD Inventor :: Drawing A Line Following Non-linear Imported Part

I imagine I have to use a 3D sketch because of the twist and we are guessing that the split line will run down the apex of the blade, but I don't know how to get the 3D sketch to "stick" to the apex (there is no real apex as it's curved).

AutoCAD Inventor :: Can Know If Part Fits By Moving It

Oct 29, 2011

I need to find out how much smaller the part in the upper image is so it fits inside the similar shape in the bottom image. The real part is a bit more complicated so it's hard to calculate if it fits. Is it possible to make those parts in assembly mode so that they don't move through each other and I could move the upper part inside the lower and find out that way if it fits?

AutoCAD Inventor :: Moving Part In X-direction?

I'm new to Inventor and I've been working on a complicated part for quite some time. However, I've just realised that I've made an error at the very beginning. I'm drawing the part in the YZ plane and extruding along the X axis. My problem is due to the fact that I began the drawing at x=0 when I should have began at x=7780mm. moving the entire part in the positive X direction? I've tried several approaches but none seem to work.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Moving Items Within Part Drawing

I am trying to move a component within a part drawing, not an assembly. When I do "move bodies" it wants to move every extrusion within my drawing. If I click move face, then I have to click every face that I want to move (which is time consuming) and then it often times doesn't work? Sometime it works other times it just moves the origin indicator and doesn't move the faces I have selected.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Moving Parts In Part Environment?

My problem is that I want to rotate the part so that a face that was once along the XZ plane will now be in the XY plane. Is there anyway to rotate it like this? I would like to do this so that when I bring it into Mastercam, I don't have to rotate it each time.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Only One Constrain Disables Moving Of Part Instance Within An Assembly

Apr 26, 2013

sometimes when using constraints the "movable" part is fixed after adding the first constraint.

If i use i.e. a surface to surface constraint the movable part should be free to slide on the surface.

To move the part in this case  I have to add further constraint or delete the old one.

Furthermore sometimes constraints in assemblys do not update automatically. I have to click on the part and try to move it away. After releasing the part the consraint will be updated.

Are there any options to control or better change this behavior?

I am using Inventor 2013+Vault 2013.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Moving Solid Part In Assembly Using Grip Snaps And Specific Vector Direction

Please look at the attachment, here you will see a gusset positioned on top of a foot plate, the gusset needs to be moved so that it makes contact with the cylinder,it will then be welded. The problem is more difficult because the gusset is offset to the axis of the cylinder and the precise distance is unknown unless worked out using trigonometry.

The question is what is the best method of moving the gusset to the precise distance and direction ?
