AutoCAD Inventor :: Migrating Custom CC Library From 2013 To 2014
May 28, 2013
I have upgraded to Inventor 2014 and I'm having trouble transferring my custom content center library (local machine, no server). My understanding was that I copy the .idcl and .idz files from the old folder to the 2014 folder, open the projects dialog box, configure content center libraries button, and use the update tool button.
However, in the configure libraries dialog box my custom library doesn't even show up in the list along with my ANSI, ISO, "My Library", etc. Restarting Inventor didn't work.

I've made my own material library containing a short list of materials from the Inventor default library. And I have set my Project ipj to use it as the default library. All works OK. But, every time I make a new project ipj I have to go find my custom library adsklib file to add it to the project. Is there a certain folder the adsklib file need to live in so that new projects will pick it up automatically?

I have been recently put in charge of all things Autodesk at my company. We have just installed 2014 software on our machines and I'm told that I need to migrate the styles library from 2013 to 2014. Here's the thing though, we have our Inventor templates and design data on a network drive for all to access.
I see where there is a style manager included in the Tools of Inventor but I open it up and I can't make heads or tails of it.

First, I have not grasped the extent yet of how the new appearance library works.. we don't get crazy with colors, reflections etc.. but we do have a handful of colors that we use on the machines we use.. so instead of using the default appearance library, i made a new appearance library. All this went well, but i periodically as i need them will add colors to it.. problem is that i'm obviously doing something wrong, because my colors don't always stay in there after i restart Inventor.. and yesterday, i can't seem to keep any of the colors i setup in there to stay.. all i want to do is copy specific colors from inventors appearance library.. drag them into mine, rename them, maybe tweak the color, and then they be there for next time.. why won't they stay?
The edit pencil will come up on my library.. i've done the release edit after i'm done.. everything works in this inventor session, but if i turn inventor off and back on again.. they are gone.. only thing i have thought of remaining is that 3 users on our network share the same design styles location so we all our using same stuff, so is the file inventor uses in design styles to save to read only or something, but i read that appearances aren't saved in design styles.. How to do this and the colors stay and populate through all the existing stuff.. I have got the colors to lock into my template ipt in the doc appearances.. and i've done the save to custom library thing.. works until i restart inventor..

I just installed AutoCAD 2014, but it's not pulling my custom .pgp file, even though the folder that file is in is first in my support path.

I'm trying to migrate our styles library from Inventor 2011 to 2013 using the style library manager. I have the current (2013) library loaded in the first slot, and my old 2011 library loaded in the second slot. Under the 2011 library, the Migrate button is active.
I click Migrate, and after telling me it can take up to 2 minutes to migrate the library, it proceeds. After about two minutes, I get a progress box generated by Inventor (not the style library manager) that indicates it is copying some 1300 files from one location, to another. I can't tell if it is the same location or not, as the filepaths are truncated in the progress box.
As it finishes, usually with one file remaining, I get the "Autodesk Inventor 2013 Has stopped working" error. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly etc. etc.
I do not relish having to go back and manually define all my styles.
Context: Product Design Suite Ultimate 2013, Win 7 Pro, 12 GB ram. I've tried both with and without my antivirus realtime scan on.

I don't normally use libraries. I'm just not a big fan of them, so if I'm wrong here about a basic concept it's no surprise. My understanding was that if you add a folder location to a project under the library heading (see image) then everything in it automatically becomes read-only when that project is active.
My intention was to test some of 2014's functionality on products that I have drawn in 2013 without mucking up my other designers who I'm not ready to upgrade, yet. So, I copied some assemblies over to a new folder on my network completely outside of the root folder of the normal working directories. I then assigned that working directory as a library in the new project file I created in 2014 specifically for testing it. I expected this to allow me to open my files without a bunch of unresolved reference problems and not have to worry about accidentally migrating files that I'm not ready to migrate.
So, why did I still manage to migrate a bunch of file that are located in the working directory that's supposed to be write protected?! Now I have actual product files that can't be opened in 2013. Luckily, I can restore these from a back-up, but what did I miss here? Did I not check a certain box somewhere or am I missing the whole concept? I really doubt this critical function of Inventor is somehow bugged in 2014.

In Inventor 2014, is it possible to export a list of all of the materials in a given material library..? As text, or into Excel, or something similar?
I have a material library in Inventor 2014 containing lots of custom defined materials. I would like to create a master list that I can give to someone who isn't using Inventor. The only property that I really need to export is the material name, e.g.' CSA G40.21-44W'.
In this case, engineering is trying to coordinate better with purchasing, by making sure that materials are specified in the same way in both departments.

When selecting a material from the dropdown list the material isn’t downloaded correctly.
I had just edited the appearance for that material, pointed it to a new bitmap, then added the appearance & material to the library. Then purged it all from the document.
Restarting Inventor results in the material being downloaded from the library correctly.

We've recently upgraded a large project from Civil 3D 2012 to Civil 3D 2014 and for the most part things have migrated well.
On this project as well as others that have been migrated, I've been noticing this and similar messages re: modified in a previous version when the dref's synchronize:
"FG-STREET A was modified in a previous version of the software. Changes in the current were overwritten when the data reference was synchronized."
The steps we used for converting this project in order are:
Set Data shortcuts working folder.
Migrate Survey Database.
Open/save base drawing containing survey & EG surface.
Open/save all C3d source dwgs before opening any plan sheets.
Open/save all C3d plan sheets.
Because of the warning message I thought I'd try the "Migrating Data Shortcuts" following the instructions.
Use the stand-alone Data Shortcuts Editor to save one or more data shortcuts to a specified folder. If the shortcuts were created with a previous version of AutoCAD Civil 3D, they will be updated to the current format in this process.
When following the steps in the Data Shortcuts Editor, when I get to step 5, select the folder & choose Saveas, I see the following message that they will be saved in 2009 format?
Isn't that a downgrade? How these modified in a previous version messages?
I'm still trying to figure out if they are a benign message or if they are something I should be concerned with. 95% of the shortcuts on the project sync normally & seem to work fine other than an occasional disappearing profile in the sheet profiles.

We produce a piece of equipment with numerous parts and assemblies that we would like to use as a base model. We do not or will ever use vault so I'm trying to come up with a library/content center area where I can store the parts and assemblies that then can be inserted into new assemblies which would create a completely new design based on existing parts. My problem is lack of experience in setting up a good library/ content center area, I do not know what would be an acceptable plan of attack, right now I have moved the complete assembly onto the server in its own location but this is where I get stumped.

Is there some reason my 2013 custom material library size is so big. I have a 16 different appearances and 35 different physical properties with a total of 71 separate materials and then file is nearly 3 megs. 99% of the appearances and physical props are Inventor standard.
The default Inventor Library with considerably more information is WAY smaller.
So what's going on, am i just building the library wrong?
I also have a different library that is over 21 megs, it contains a number of different materials that is comperable to the default Inventor one but again only 16 appearances and 35 phsical props. It's completly unusable.

I have recently started playing with the new materials and appearances browsers - what a nightmare.
So I created a custom library as described in the "Materials and Appearances" whitepaper from Autodesk.
Bottom left corner of material browser > create new material
> edit material: change its name, density etc
Why can I not add it to the new custom library - from document materials?I tried to drag and drop - no success.
I tried to right click > add to > xxx material library - no success. It does however let me drag and drop to the "favorites".

I've created a folder on our server that contains commonly used parts by several users. My thought was that by referencing this folder as library in their projects, they wouldn't be able to change the parts. I could also build assemblies referencing these common parts so they wouldn't have to be copied into each project folder...
During the save option in their assemblies, the parts show up as NO (in a library), but this can be bypassed by "YES TO ALL".Is this not the right process for setting up a custom part library? Also, the users are experiencing some lag issues... Could this be the reason?

I'm using Inventor 2014 with Service Pack 1 with Desktop Content Center enabled on a single machine. I've also installed Vault Basic 2014 on the same machine. Operating System is Windows 7 Professional.
I've edited my non-vaulted and vaulted project files to create a Custom Content Center Library called Zzyzx. I've started a new Assembly and entered the Content Center Editor to add files to the Zzyzx library. I've copied the Inventor ANSI fasteners section into the Zzyzx library, using the Copy To method with links enabled. So far, so good.
After copying the entire Inventor ANSI fasteners to the Zzyzx library, I created a new column called DESCRIPTION within the Heavy Hex Head Bolt - Inch series folder. Using and expression, I've modified the string values of the just created DESCRIPTION column. I've elected to map DESCRIPTION to the Project.Description iProperty. I use the OK button and each row in the new column gets populated. Update Lightning Bolts are displayed at the far left of the dialog box.
I then use either the Apply or OK button and then Inventor displays a Publish Error message box that states: Non-unique filename(s) found in members. I've checked the file names and I see nothing that's repeating. I've tried using a new file name, but that doesn't solve the issue. What steps must I take in order to successfully edit my Custom Content Library called Zzyzx?

My custom library works fine when I try to insert a part from content center, but when I try to use frame generator my library is not seen. I set the "Standard Organization" and "Standard" family property fields both to "DYNA" hoping that standard would show up in the frame generator "Standard" drop down menu but it doesn't.
I saved a copy of a pipe family to "My Library" and made it an independant family.

Is there a good source of material mechanical properties on the internet? I have been creating a custom material library with the materials I normally use and I've just been duplicating a material from the supplied libraries to create mine with a name change only. I'd like to include the correct mechanical properties if I could find a source of information that has all the properties in the format that the Inventor 2013 materials editor requires.

I would like to publish the custom threaded rivets library. I wish I could add it to Rivets section but it is not available in the Component Authoring.
Actually I did create it in the Clevis Pin section but I would like some order in my library where everything is set on a right place. I mean I wish my rivets will be placed in Rivet section.
Possible to make Rivets available in the Component Authoring?
There are any ways to move it to other section after Publishing? Is it possible to create the custom section which will be available and visible in Component Authoring?

I have gone thru what appears to be the correct steps in creating a custom material library a total of 3 times.
Once I finish customizing the library while in Inventor, I add it to my project file and make it the "active" library. I test it with each of my part & assembly templates on my local machine without an issue. When I log into another work station, locate and add the new library to their project file Inventor gives me a "no materials found". So I go back to my machine to check and the library is no longer valid for me either.
I can see the library on the server, the file size is 3.6MB so it has substance. I cannot figure out what I am doing that is causing the library from locking up completely when I try to use it with another work station. Also, if any way to make my library usable again that would save me about 8 hours of work.
all of our stations use the "generic.ipj" project file.

I have created a custom library (custom content center), and that went fine. All I done was copy a family of RHS from the desktop content center into my custom content library. I then created a small test assembly with frame generator to see if I could use my custom library. It worked fine BUT when I place it into a drawing and create the parts list, the parts list shows all the info in an order that is no use to me. (see attached *SNIP A*)
What I would like is that when I use frame generator along with my custom library, then take it into a drawing, the parts list needs to look like the attached file (see attached *SNIP B*).
So really, I want the "Unit QTY" to vanish, I want the "QTY" to show the Quantity of that part within the assembly, I want the "stock Number" to vanish and I want the description to show the size of the member (what the "stock number" currently shows) along with the length of the member.
Now I know I can edit all this for each part within the parts list BUT I need the parts list to show this info EVERY time AND automatically.

When I implemented Inventor Pro 2013 I added all our custom materials to the Inventor Material Library. This library is not local but on a shared network drive that everyone in my company can access. You can clearly see that it is not locked and is write enabled. I dragged the local material to the library and I shows up in the library. When I close and exit Inventor and re-open, it is no longer available.
You can clearly see by my screen capture that the new material was added to the library. Why isn't is updating the library?
I have managed our Inventor styles and libraries for Inventor since 2003 (R5) and I never had as much problems getting my mind to wrap around this new appearances change that Autodesk has made. I have wasted 4 hours this morning trying to add a simple custom material to my library and I cannot.

I typically use basic ISO fastners in conjunction with the bolted connection generator. Just now I have discovered the ability to add a custom library to the content centre. This appears fantastic as I no longer have to sift through the 10 - 30 or so items available in each category to complete my bolted connection.
However I am experiencing a delima
I have created a custom library called "My Favourites" and it contains 6 bolt families, 1 spring & flat washer family and 1 nut family. All families are derived from the ISO standard (bar the spring washer which is DIN 128) and all thread pitches for the respective nut and bolt connection(s) match.
The problem I am experiencing is when I execute the bolted connection command I can add the bolt, 2 flats and 1 spring washer yet when I come to close the connection with a nut the nut selection box is empty?
I have the active project configured with "My Favourites" "Inventor Feature" & "Inventor Routed Systems" as the only in use libraries. Secondly, I have verified the existance of the nut(s) in "My Favourites" in the Content Centre Editor.
I am using Inventor 2010 updated to SP3 on a standalone machine, running Windows 7 Ultimate (w/ latest updates)

When I use Frame Generator to add a structural shape, from my library, the name shown in the Model Browser is formatted as follows (Standard)+(Unique Number) and not (Standard)+(Stock Number)+(Unique Number).
How to get the Stock Number to show in the model Browser. How to get the members name to show, with the correct format, in the Model Browser as this will make identifying members in an assembly easier.

Inventor creates a names to custom library parts based on settings and available parameters.
For all custom libraries I can create file names as I want except profile libraries.
The profile library create file name using Family Name + Stock Number and I did not find the
way to change it. I cannot get rid of that Stock Number in family name in this and other profile libraries. I wish I can use Part Number instead of Stock number in naming as more informative.
To change the file naming I do the following:
Manage - Editor - chose Library - chose family - Family Table - File Naming -
than chose required parameters to be shown as file name (for instance I have
{PARTNUMBER}), than in Map to Inventor Property: - Member.Display.Name
than OK - Refresh - Done.
All custom libraries obeys the file name changing EXCEPT the profile library.
