AutoCAD Inventor :: Dimensions And Notes Disappear When Reverenced Geometry Is Deleted
Nov 20, 2012
This following happened frequently.
1. We spend a lot of time creating a drawing with dimensions and leader text.
2. The part or assembly changes (feature or components are deleted or replaced)
3. Dimensions that reference deleted geometry disappear.
From what I can tell, the dimension will turn pink/purple and not disappear ONLY if one of it's attachment points is still valid. However, if all the attachment points for the dimension or leader text are gone, then the dimension or leader text simply disappears.
We spent a lot of time creatin these dimensions and/or leader text and would like to know if there is a problem. We have had many instances where we though the drawing was done only to find vital info missing. To make sure this doesn't bite us again we currently have to carefully compare archived revisions of the drawing with the current drawing to make sure everything is there.
I am working on some VB code to reterive the dimensions fron an IDW and put them on an excel spreadsheet for an Inspection report. I found some code to which gets the linear dimensions and have added tolerance type and tolerance bands.
I have been unable to get the hole notes off the IDW. Got the general notes to work with the following
Dim invDrawNotes As Inventor.DrawingNotes Dim invActDrawNotes As Inventor.DrawingNote Set invDrawNotes = invActSHT.DrawingNotes
I have placed a srting of text on an Inventor 2012 drawing howver I can't edit it once placed - double clicking / right clicking does not give me any options.

When using alternate dimensions in hole notes it repeats the full note for both dimension units. I would like to only have the dimensional data have the alternate information and not repeat the full note (see attached file).
I am trying to create and display multiple Notes on an Inventor Part. I select the face, right click, select create note, and the note gets created perfectly. However the next note I create does not get displayed in the graphics window. It gets added to note in the browser. Is it possible to get all notes created displayed on the model?
I also see that the note automatically adds the Author and the date to the note. Is it possible to edit this information. It says the information is read only.
Every time I create a chamfer note, I have to edit it, because I don't like '1.5 X 45° ', I like the lower case of '1.5 x 45° '. Only a small detail, maybe, but that's how I prefer it. Can I edit the template somewhere so that this happens automatically?
Similarly, can I edit the hole note so that the tolerance (6H, etc) is not shown for tapped holes?
How do you constrain an object to the origin once the origin constraint has been deleted. I'm not really sure how it became unconstrained in the first place. When I try to constrain the drawing using the coincident constraint it won't allow me to select the origin.
I have an assembly where I have deleted a component, but it is still linked to the assembly somehow. The part is no longer visible in the model, is missing from the model tree and from the BOM, but it still prompts to save. I have attached screenshots to show what i mean: The file (00017429.ipt) prompting to save, despite not actually being in the assembly (00052857), the parts-only BOM showing that the part is not in the BOM, and the vault tab with the part highlighted.
I don't believe this is vault related because Inventor is prompting to save the 'deleted' file, and pack-and-go also grabs the 'deleted' file.
For the example shown, it is a minor nuisance because it means an extra drawing gets printed when an assembly with this problem gets used. I have just had the same problem happen on another, much more complex assembly and it is causing me major grief.
I was recently updating an assembly which contained a part that had been subsequently deleted from my folders. I skipped it while opening the assembly, then deleted the part in the Model Tree (and replaced it with a different component). So, to summarize, the assembly no longer has the part in the Tree, and the part does not exist anymore on my system. These parts and assemblies have not been Vaulted, so that should not be an issue either.
My problem is that every time I open the assembly, it wants me to resolve this deleted part, and I have to skip it every time just to proceed. Once the file is loaded, I get no other issues, no "red cross" items, just a question mark next to the file name at the top of the Tree indicating that the file needs to be resolved.
The old part is gone; I tried recreating it using the same file name, and using the same third-party SAT file from which it was originally generated, but Inventor detects that it's not the original part and won't accept it.
How to get past this "part resolution" issue?

We're using Inventor to model complex bridge structures. We take sections, plans, elevations etc. from the model to AutoCAD.dwg format. We then open the .dwg and insert the view blocks in model space, these files are then used as xrefs in AutoCAD, long winded but a supply chain requirement.
The models and xrefs are all saved on our network, no vault used, no windows syncing.
To create the sections we have a separate part file that contains sketches where we want the sections taken, this is placed in our assembly. The sketches are all straight lines (no cranks) and included in the .dwg and selected to create the sections.
We're experiencing a significant number of files that when we open to update the model views we randomly get an error "valid section line not found" and several of the sections disappear. The section lines part file is fine, the section lines are all still there and unchanged.
How in import 2D geometry into Inventor so I do not have to redraw the profile, only extrude the existing geometry. I tried to export from Autocad a IGES file, and then create a sketch plane in Inventor and project the geometry onto the sketch plane, but I ended up with a bunch of open loops. Perhaps, I have figured it out and real question is how to I close open loops?

When I save parts in the library on my harddrive the file does not show subsequently. But if I try to re-save it, I get the statement that the file already exist.
I cannot find the file anywhere, not even with the windows search function. The file is missing, but somehow present below the surface.
Besides this did Inventor create several versions of my previous parts (0001, 0002, 0003... etc.)
The hole tool will not let me complete the holes if I delete the cross part references & re-create them again.
Note that I had to change some adaptive hole locations to follow a part that was moved & I couldn't get adaptivity turned on for all components involved (adaptivity grayed out on actual part to change). Not sure why I could turn adaptivity back on. So I opted to just recreate the cross part hole references in the parts hole sketch.
I find I have to now delete the holes completely & start over which causes extra work in IDW & IPN files downstream.
Is this as planned or am I doing something wrong. This used to be easy in 2012.
I would like to be able to show an animation of a flat plate of material converging into a half hollow sphere (like a bowl). Its easy to model the beginning and end stae, but I do not know how to show it transitioning from one to the other.
How to do this? I need it for a presentation to convey a design concept.
I'm fairly new to the world of CAD, and I was just working on a phone case for my friend when I tried to extrude geometry text, but couldn't because the OK and Apply options were greyed out. I tried embossing and making a hole, but they were greyed out for them too. I tried messing with the settings to see if I could fix it, but I still couldn't. I'm really confused right now, I remember doing something similar for a case I made for myself.?
