AutoCAD Inventor :: Add User Parameters To Parts Using External Rules

Feb 25, 2013

I have a large collection of parts that are controlled from an exteranl rule. I need to make slight changes to the external rule, but for the changes to be successful I need two extra user parameters to be added to each of the parts. There are hundreds of parts, so going in and adding the two parameters to each would take days.

Is there a simple way of getting the external rule to add the two parameters?

P.s. My VB skills are pretty limited, but my understanding of iLogic is pretty good.

AutoCAD Inventor :: External ILogic Rules And Templates?

Apr 1, 2012

I am trying to build a set of scripts (aka iLogic rules) into templates. So far, quite a common task. One extra requirement is that the scripts need to be updatable after parts have been instanciated from the template. That is, we do not want to update all of the ipt each time a new material option is added to the script. That means that external rules are the only way to go, right? This is the road I tried and it seems to work on my machine.

One extra requirement is that the whole project must be shared between several workstations. We went the Subversion road for that (for all the Vault comments). The scripts are distributed properly and in the same absolute location on the two test machines, all good (I checked the md5 on both side and they all match). The application options on all the machines are all set the same way (export the xml file, check it in the source control, import on all the machines restart). The iLogic search path is also updated, but manually this time, since it is not included in the application options export. It should all work perfectly right? Well, sort of....

I did create a tiny assembly from the templates. On my source machine, all looks good. The ilogic rules are both listed in the ilogic browser and the triggers are set when I instanciate from the template. This is the intended behavior. Now, I close inventor, copy the whole directory to a new machine, open inventor there and open the project. The rules do not appear anymore in the browser, but they are still listed in the trigger list (wtf?). The best part is that if I do not touch anything, stuff still works! The scripts are found and run properly!! Now, if I have to change the triggers or even find the rule in the browser to run it manually, well, bad-stuff-happens (tm).

All the files in question are indentical on both machines, the ilogic files, the ipt files, the application options export, all with the same hash. The ilogic search path is also set the same as are the absolute paths. It should work the same (tm).

Me sending a copy of the files is not likely to work though. Since the problem happens when you copy. I could try to "pack and go", but that would break reason #1 for doing that, which is keeping only one version of the script and adding materials at only one place for all the projects.

AutoCAD Inventor :: ILogic External Rules Location

Jul 31, 2013

I have a dedicated folder for external rules on a network. In the Advanced ilogic configuration interface on my machine I added the path to this folder in the External rule directories.That seemed to work fine. I opened the ilogic tree activated the external tab and the external rules were available for selection.

Today I tried to do the same process however no rules were visible under the external tab. I had to select "add external rule" and navigate to the folder.I do not want my users to have to manually navigate to the folder. Is there a step i have missed in this process? I am using Inventor/ilogic 2009.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Run Rules In Assembly Parts Only When Needed?

Apr 29, 2013

I have some assemblies that are made of iLogic parts. The code within the assemblies causes a common external rule to run in each of the parts to update the part's metadata (descriptions, part numbers ect.) to relect any changes to the part.

However, when a change is made to the assembly, not all the parts are effected and yet my code will still run the external rule within the uneffected parts. This slows things down some, but more problematic is the fact that the uneffected parts need to be checked out/revised, even though they themselves haven't changed.

Is there a way of reorganising my code so that external rules are only run in parts that are effected by the assembly change?

AutoCAD Inventor :: How To Use ILogic Rule To Delete Rules And Features In Other Parts

Aug 10, 2012

I made an Part with iLogic rules, let's call it "iLogicPart". The rules inside could create lot of different part by my input.

I want save the different parts to different name as "Part 1", "Part 2", etc. I used SaveAs to get them.

My question is: I want to delete all rules and parameters in the saved parts as "Part 1", "Part 2". And I have lot of features (the name is hard to track) which are inactive, I want to delete them at same time too.

I could manually do so, but I want to use rule to do so automatically.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Using User Parameters In Drawing Sketch?

Aug 22, 2011

We are trying to add reference lines to the idw drawing for a sub-assembly.  These lines represent centerlines of parts of the main assembly. The main assembly is not the reference file for the drawing.  However, the required dimension setting the centerlines is a User Parameter in the sub-assembly.  (The centerlines are represented by work planes in the sub-assembly file).  Using iLogic, we were able to populate the User Parameter from the sub-assembly into the idw file.  We can see it as a User Parameter in the idw file.  However, when we go into sketch mode the User Parameter is not an option.    In sketch mode, we pull a dimension between the two centerlines (d4).  When you look at the parameters d4 does not exist so we cannot set d4 equal to our User Parameter (and we've looked there are no filters on).      We need this dimension to be able to adjust as the length of the sub-assembly adjusts for different cases.  Each case is unique and done on a job by job basis.

There are several places in our drawings where being able to place reference lines and set their relationship to the part would be very useful.

1.  Why are the User Parameters not available for use in sketch mode on a drawing?

2.  Why can the dimension IDs (ex. d4) not be seen by looking at the parameters?

3.  alternative way of putting reference lines on a drawing?

AutoCAD Inventor :: Change User Parameters From A Linked Part

Jul 19, 2013

I made an assembly that adjusted to sized based on some key parameters. These key parameters are controlled by a form in the main assembly. The keys parameters actually adjust the skeleton file, which then drives the frame, then all the parts are adjusted.

after changing these parameters all necessary parts would adjust to size and keep the location constraints. Worked quite well.

The issue now is that, we adopted a new naming convention and this assembly requires all the part files to be renamed. I meticulously saved each part as their new name and then replaced each component in the main assembly. This worked to an extent. The problem that I am facing is that when I saved each part as there new name, the new part retained the linked parameters to the old part. Is there a way to change this link to the newly name skeleton file?

I looked into design assistant for this process as well, but the only changes I think available were to add a prefix or suffix. If worse comes to worse, I can remodel this project but, I am sure there has to be a way to alter this.

attached is a single part with those parameters in the image above.

We also have text User parameters.  Is there a way to add these parameters to the description as well?  They do not have the option of checking the export parameter box in the parameters table.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Add Specific User Parameters To Part File

I would like to have a rule that will add specific user parameters to a part file.  These parameters need to be formatted so the width, depth and thickness will control the description of the part.

IE:

Width=4

Depth=2

Thickness=3/16

DESCRIPTION = TS <Width>X<Depth>X<Thickness>

I would like to format each parameter so that the:

Format=Fractional

Precision=1/16

Unit string=False

This is what I have so far:

oMyParameter=ThisApplication.ActiveDocument.ComponentDefinition.Parameters.UserParameters

oParameter=oMyParameter.AddByExpression("Width", "TOP_RAIL_WIDTH", UnitsTypeEnum.kInchLengthUnits)
oParameter.ExposedAsProperty=True
oParameter.Units="in"

[Code]...

The TOP_RAIL parameters are from a linked file.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Linking Parameters Between Parts

Nov 6, 2013

So i have a box with a left side, right side, top, bottom and a door in an assembly.I've linked all the parameters to the 'right side component' so that when i change it, it updates all the other parts in the assembly.

What I want to accomplish is to be able to use my BASE SIZED BOX ( say 500 x 500 ) to create many different sized boxes.The problem I have is when I save the assembly as a new one and save and replace all the components for the bigger box, all the components still reference the old part ( 500 x 500 right side component) instead of the bigger ( 600 x 600 right side component.

how to link parameters, don't know ilogic, and just know the basics of assemblies and part modeling.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Driving Parts With Parameters From Assembly?

Aug 15, 2013

How can I drive parts from an assembly level without using Excel spreadsheets. I know it is possible using iLogic to do it, but I can't figure out how to do it "automatically".

For example, we would like to drive a conveyor roller without the use of a spreadsheet. I figured out I could simply insert user-driven parameters in the top-level assembly and drive the parts with the parameters in the assembly, but it is telling me it would cause a cyclic redundancy, so I cannot do it this way, then I thought about iLogic.

It is currently working OK, but I have to enter in the iLogic rule to manually change the filenames in the rule for it to work.

Why? Mainly because we use a prefix to our parts and we sometimes use Autodesk Vault, sometimes not (depending on the project).

Here is my example;

I have a part named "Tube.ipt", "Bearing.ipt", "Spring.ipt" and "Tige Hexagonale.ipt" along with this code in the assembly level (Rouleau.iam):

Parameter("Spring:1", "GAGE") = WIRE_SPRING
Parameter("Spring:1", "DE") = OD_SPRING
Parameter("Spring:1", "LONGUEUR") = LENGHT_SPRING
Parameter("Tube:1", "LONGUEUR_TUBE") = RL-Parameter("Bearing:1", "EPAULEMENT")-Parameter("Bearing:1", "EPAULEMENT")
Parameter("Tige hexagonale:1", "LONGUEUR_HEXA") = RL+B+B
Parameter("Tige hexagonale:1", "BOSSE_SPRING") = B+0.010 in+Parameter("Bearing:1", "EPAULEMENT_SPRING")+LENGHT_SPRING+WIRE_SPRING
Parameter("Tige hexagonale:1", "BOSSE_BEARING") = B+0.010 in+Parameter("Bearing:1", "EPAULEMENT_SPRING")

As you may see, I would have to change "Tige hexagonale:1" every time we use this assembly on different project for it to update properly. I would like to automate it a little bit more.

How to make it work in iLogic:Search for something that has "Tube" in it's filename in this assembly, then store it into a variable called "Tube" Repeat this step for "Spring" and "Tige" Then replace "tige hexagonale:1" by the variable or something like this...
