AutoCAD Civil 3D :: SSA 2013 Simple Flow Into Pipe
Sep 14, 2012
I have a simple catchment area that I've routed to an inlet and then to an outfall. The 10 year storm peak flow going into the inlet is 3.91 cfs and my flow in the link to the outfall is 10.55 cfs. I do not understand why it is increasing going into the pipe. I've attached the pdf results here because for some reason it won't let me attach.spf file.

where the setting is to reverse the flow of a pipe. I have the flow arrow shown in the wrong direction plus am showing a negative slope on a pipe, which should never be done.

I can't figure out how to reverse the flow direction on my pipe so I was going to just redraw it but after I delete a pipe and rt click to edit network the "add pipes and stuctures" won't let me add anything. I'm just guessing I need to reverse the flow direction because my invert out and invert in elevations are backwards in the profile. I'm working in Civil3D 2012.

how do I use Civil 3D to do basic pipe analysis computations? For example, I give it the slope, material, etc. and it spits out the flow velocity, flow depth, slope min, etc.
All I want for now is a basic tool for sizing pipes without all the bells, loops & whistles. I can learn the fancy pipe networking stuff later.

Using the Pressure Pipe Network in Civil3D 2013? I just recently began developing an Apputenace library for all the parts we use that were not included with the program. I have run into a few big issues that could prevent our firm from using this potentially useful tool. One issue, does the PPN posses the ability to create structures like manholes? This could be a really break point for using it to do a sewer line. Another, how well does it interact with multiple surfaces? If I have two surfaces butted up to one another how to a get a PPN from point A on surface 1 to point B on surface 2 and have that PPN respond at the correct bury depth while creating the correct fittings? As I experiment more this this tool I feel as if there are way more questions about what it can and can't do compared to what a regular pipe network does.

When a pipe network is referenced into a drawing in Civil 3D 2013 there is an option to set the layer for the pipes and structures. After the layer is set, the parts go onto these layers until the network is syncronized. After the network is synronized the parts revert back to whatever layer is set in the object layers in the drawing settings.

So I wanted to put my existing 2d linework for a water main into a pressure network. I have done quite a bit of reading about pressure networks and the lack of different pipe materials and apputenances to choose from. It seems as though the fittings are all there for the most part.
The way I understand it is the only pipe material that is shipped with C3D is Ductile Iron and if you want PVC or something else, you open the content catalog editor and change the dutile iron pipe to polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Am I on the right track here?
As far as appurtenances go, when I open up the Content Catalog Explorer there is nothing for hydrants, valves, wyes, etc...... Is the only thing I can show then bends?

I've been really excited to know Pressure Network modelling is finally coming to Civil 3D with 2013 release. However I've got no clue why any pipe data won't display in Profile View. This makes absolutely no sense in pressure network profiling since you can't output any pipe data to profile view tables. Note pipe data outputs great for regular Pipe Network profile views.
Another thing I'm disappointed in is no ability to output Uphill Tangent and Downhill Tangent for pressure network pipes. Both values are given in Vertical Geometry Band type. Thus they are being obtaned from Profile but not Pressure Network Pipe data. Since in Pressure Networks it's only a couple of pipes that are being curved to match surface line it's impossibe to get Tangets. Sure you can duplicate surface profile and get required data using Vertical Geometry Band type. But it make no sence since it's too much hustle.
I'm quite sure I'm missing something here. Probably there's a way to add required data styles to Band types? Or modify Label styles Contents data sources?

We previously switched from 2010 to 2012, i transferred our pipe catalog with custom pipes. I though i did it right, but when i started editing pipes that were started in 2010 the pipe sizes were automatically changing to the wrong size after edit.
We are about to upgrade from c3d 2012 to 2013, i don't want this to happen again. proper way to transfer our customized pipe catalog?

I have designed a pipe network in Civil 3D 2013, first I created a rule set for both structures and pipes, then I created a parts list, next I built my network.
Where more than two pipes connected to one structure, I found 'applyrules' couldn't align everything appropriately, so I had to manually amend the levels in 3D to ensure the pipes connected correctly (soffit to soffit / top invert to top invert).
My problem is that after doing all this, the surface model has been amended! I have changed the reference surface in the network properties and in the vista. The rim height of my structures seems to have been adjusted in the most part but my pipes have not.
In areas where the surface has gone down, my minimum cover is violated. Is there a way to move the pipes back down to minimum cover, without using 'applyrules', as using that command would change the gradients to the minimum, some gradients have changed during my manual adjustments.
Furthermore, where the surface model has reduced in level significantly, my pipes are now above the surface and the manhole has stayed there too.

I am trying to create a simple loft to show smashing the end of a pipe. I created the work planes based from the middle of the part. I placed a transition sketch and then a final sketch along with a center of the part sketch. When I could not get the transition to work I went back and added a sketch on the end of the pipe though I don't think it is needed. I still get nothing. I even followed the selection procedures from Wikihelp with no change.

Also I "insert" manhole every 400' per local code requirements using the command "network layout tools; structures only. My problem is I couldn't find the tools how to trim the pipe that pass through the manhole. Please see attached pdf file.

One of the things I seem to struggle with is being able to depict a single pipe when it needs to be shown in one profile as a crossing pipe, and another profile where you you show a lenghwise slice through the pipe. I end up tracing the pipe with eliptical objects where I'm cutting across the pipe and setting up more for the lengthwise/sideview of the pipe. Is there a way to have two different styles for the same pipe, one for a cross cut and one for a lengthwise slice?

I have a client that wants to put in a constant flow into an inlet and have SSA calculate the HGL downstream of that (as well as add additional flows at additional inlets). Is there a way to do this? I tried adding an "Initial flow" to a pipe but after running the analysis, that flow wasn't the peak of the pipe (I used 1cfs for the initial flow and the peak was 0.77 cfs).

I am modeling an existing storm system that is under capacity. After running the model, some of the flows seem to be incorrect. I have one section that has a known flow of 1.31 cfs. The results for this pipe section shows 28.82 cfs (peak flow during analysis) and 6.06 cfs (design flow capacity). The pipe section is a 15" with constructed slope of 0.0088 ft/ft. The max velocity attained is 23.48 ft/sec. I know that the downstream is undersized. Could this flow rate be caused by the downstream backflows? The model is setup as hydrodynamic and rational method. My inertial terms are set at ignore, time step = 0, junction surface area = 0 and variable time step with safety factor 75%. I have gutter bypass flows and my sag structures have ponded area set at 100.

I have a huge subdivision that we are about to do in civil 3d. The subdivision has over 1800 lots. I am wondering what is the best way to go about this. At the moment we are thinking we have to do the alignments, profiles and corridors all in one design drawing for it all to be dynamic? If so this file is going to be huge. Is there a way we can split it up and still keep everything dynamic?

I am wanting to get the peak flow back into Civil3d to add to our long sections, I assume the Peak Flow in SSA is the Flow rate property for the pipe in Civil3d, the HGL stuff seems to come in ok. I am just doing a basic rational analysis in SSA is there a trick to getting the data?
Attached is a screen capture of SSA versus Civil3d data

I am modelling a steep channel of constant slope operating under super critical flow conditions between two small weirs. I have set up two different models to represent this:
1. A single link between the upstream and downstream weirs.
2. I have also modeled the channel as a number of smaller links with the same slope separated by nodes spaced arbitrarily along the channel length.
The two models give very different results. The former results in an unstable channel (oscillates between sub- and super critical flow) and a maximum velocity in the channel of around 1.5m/s. It seems to me that the velocity in the upper section of the channel should be higher. I assume this has something to do with the manner in which SSA averages the velocities along the entire channel link.
The second model gives more realistic velocities in the upper channel links (around 3.6m/s) and a hydraulic jump and transition to sub critical flow upstream of the weir in the lower channel. This seems more realistic. I think the trick here is to make sure that the downstream link is long enough to enable realistic formation of the hydraulic jump in the model.

I can get the outline of my arrow head to save as a shape, but have not figured out how to save the hatching to show up in a linetype. I need the arrow head to be shaded in solid. Also is there any downloadable linetypes out there for Civil 3D?
