AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Generate Contour Of Specific Elevation From Existing Surface

Jun 20, 2012

Is there a way for Civil3D to create/generate/extract a contour of a specific elevation such as 105.53 from an existing surface?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Creating Specific Contour On Surface?

Mar 4, 2012

I am using Civil 3D 2011 and wondering how to create just one contour on an existing surface at a specific elevation. I need to show where floodwaters would get to at a specific elevation so that contour would be the easiest way if I can contour the surface with just 1 elevation. I don't want to have to create 0.1' contours all over the site and then remove all the extras.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Possible To Create A Specific Contour In Volume Surface

Mar 2, 2012

I created surfaces in Civil 3d 2011 for existing and proposed and I did a surface volume between them. Is it possible to create a specific contour in the volume surface that represents the fill volume elevation (daylight line I think)? My proposed surface is a flood water elevation and I need to define the boundary at that elevation.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Structure Table That Lists Both Existing Surface Elevation And Proposed

So we have to adjust the elevation of hundreds of drainage structures from their existing elevation to the new finished ground elevation.I know we can give this information within the structure label by adding a reference surface but we would like to produce a table with three columns:

Structure No.      Existing Rim Elev.      Proposed Rim Elev.

How to produce such a table?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Import Point File And Assign Elevation Based On Existing Surface

Apr 12, 2012

I have a bunch (hundreds, so manual input not an option) of X,Y points without elevation data that I would like to import into a DWG and assign an elevation that is based on an existing surface object.  Is there a way to do this for a point file? The command for inserting individual points would be the "Create points - Surface > Random" but I don't see a way to do this in a batch type method where i have my PNE formatted input file to just move the points to sit on the existing surface.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: How To Color Contour Relative To Elevation

Dec 11, 2013

I would like the contour line colored to reflect the elevation it is depticting! I have successfully used surface properties - elevations - to create ranges, and to FILL color in between contours, but is there a workflow to color the contours themselves?

I also noticed, within the same dialogue box in surface properties, a contour pull down - but it doesn't have near the control to set elevation ranges, nor does actually effect the contour color.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Create All New Existing Surface Over Existing Ground

Sep 28, 2012

I'm trying to create an all new existing surface over existing ground. I have a TIN surface of the EG, and I have drawn overlay splines that describe the new surface, but how to go about creating that design surface.

It is a compound surface, open on one end and closed all around on the other, somewhat like a half of a football stadium, but with an irregular upper edge because I am needing to figure out cuts and fills to manipulate the EG into this new surface without costly major terraforming. There is about 40-50' vertical elevation between the "field" and the upper rim with a generally constant 7-10 deg. slope all around. I'm just at a loss to figure out how to approach this project, and am quite new to Civil 3D.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Adjust Elevation Not Location For Contour Poly Lines

Feb 1, 2013

I was given a file from a competetor (this is evil)

The file has  coordinates in feet (x, y) but elevations (Z) in meters.

I need the contours intact (cant explode block and scale) to create a surface from.

The other part is this is a big file so anything by hand would be rediculous.

I need the final file where the x,y has stayed the same but the z has been adjusted to the correct foot elevation (scaled)

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Editing Existing Surface Using Edit Surface Command

Nov 14, 2012

I am trying to add points into a surface. I have done this before without any problems, but now I am having issues.

When I ID points which makes up the surface it gives me the correct Z level e.g. 24.5m, however when I hover over the surface it shows me the surface name and a different z level e.g. 0.65m. What is the reason for this difference in z levels? I think this may be causing the issue I am having when I add new points.

I select the surface and use the 'edit surface command' in the ribbon, choosing add point.

When I add a point at the level I require(23.89m), it puts it in a lot higher than the surrounding area, so I tried to put the point in to the lower z levels (0.4m) it puts it in a lot lower!

My goal is coming up with the volume bounded by the design surface and the existing surface. I don't have the design surface modeled yet.

Do i need to create alignment offsets?. Alignment 1 profile view is also attached. Then Alignment2.

What about starting with alignment1 profile view? Since I have created a polyline as the design profile ?

how do I shrink labels? Where is it in the settings ; the Align folder had been check.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Create Cut Fill Surface From Existing Surface

Mar 1, 2013

Im currently using an addon for Civil 3D called Novapoint. It allows me to create 3D models of surfaces made out of 3d faces and easily models cut and fill 3d-models for me.

The only thing i need to create a cut and fill model is one or several ground surfaces (existing ground, earth layers, rock etc. whatever i need) and a closed polyline/3Dpolyline that represents the level I want my cut and/or fill model.

I enter the spcifications I want such as; earth cut angle, rock cut angle, fill angle, select which surfaces i want to include in the model calculation and select the polyline.Novapoint then calculates the cut/fill model from the surfaces to the polyline and models the different cut/fill angles and gives me the results in a 3d-face model and a specification of the volyme of rock cut, earth cut an fill.

1. Novapoint is quite unstable and crashes alot

2. You cant create profiles out of 3d faces

3. Novapoint does not automaticly combine the start surfaces with the modeled cut/fill surface

4. A large surface made out of 3d-faces demands alot of computer power

So I want to how I do the same that Novapoint does for me in Civil 3D? (I have access to Civil 3D 2007-2013 depending on which one you're using)I know I can take the 3Dfaces i created in Novapoint and make a surface in Civil 3D with them but I want to exclude Novapoint completely.

Curious why this happens. It seems to me that it is back calculate elevation or datum to a different coodinate system.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Same Surface Contour Labels On Different Layers

Mar 29, 2012

So I have an existing grade surface and I am laying out a number of different site designs.  I've got all my surfaces from those site designs on different layers each displayed in a different layout. I need to label existing contours on each layout in different places. I've setup additional contour label styles (two for each design, major, and minor) and layers (two for each design, major, and minor). However, when I add labels to my existing surface, they come in on the right layer, but whenever I freeze any of the many layers my contour labels are on, they all turn off. The only workaround I can figure is to make copies of my existing surface for each design option and label each independantly. However, this is inacceptable as far as data management goes, since my one file will be hundreds of megs with all those surfaces.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Surface From 400 Contour Tiles Separate DWG

Nov 26, 2013

I have 400 files each represent a tile of contour at 0.5m interval, if I xref all into one dwg it is extremely slow. These files have some 3d blocks which represent xyz and I made a .net program to open each file with "readdwgfile" method. However turned out that the points are not dense enough to generate the same accuracy contours as the 0.5m contours.

I am going home now to use my home computer and see if it can handle all these files xrefed and then bind and explode.

Worst case in make another program to extract only the contours and insert into a blank database. Always difficult when not given raw lidar point files.

Total size for these contour files combined is 327mb.

We have microstation capabilities not sure if it can put in the file in an easier way. I can work with the xrefed bogged down file. But is there a way to only export what's shown ? I have frozen the layers for all other objects from all the references.

I estimated total points from contours will be 20 million. Since each generate about 50000 points. Which is still workable. The computer i use in the office just make this more difficult. Slow cpu. Difficult day. Spent 7 hours programming and got it figured out but didn't solve the problem. I should have known better 20 points are not enough to generate that look in the 0.5m contours.

Also as you can see in the pic, I don't see the added points like it did back C3D 2008.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Difference Between Contour And Surface Smoothing

Apr 21, 2013

Which is better to do: contour smoothing or surface smoothing?  I did a little test with a surface with no smoothing, a surface with contour smoothing set to medium, and a surface with surface smoothing.  The results puzzled me.  The contours in the surface with no smoothing matched the contours of the surface with surface smoothing.  The profiile of the surface with no smoothing matched the profile of the surface with contour smoothing. Are these results typical?  I was surprised that the contours of the surface with surface smoothing didn't look smoother.  I was also surprised that the surface with no smoothing and the surface with contour smoothing generated the same profile.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: How To Create Surface Form Contour

If I create surface form CONTOUR, some polylines (major or minor) are not included in to surface. After the creation of surface, I tried to erase the existing contour lines (Polyline) from drawing but the surface will be disappearing.

If I create the surface from ''DRAWING OBJECTS'', I'm not able to select the polylines (attachment 01) .

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Composite Surface Of Existing Surveyed Contours As TIN Pasted Into Existing Aerial Contours

Nov 15, 2012

Some background: We have a composite surface of existing surveyed contours as a TIN pasted into existing aerial contours that we received from a client.  We used polylines to generate our proposed contours, and then generated a proposed surface from that.  We've made a blank surface, pasted in the existing surface, and are trying to paste in our proposed surface...  only the existing contours outside of the proposed suface no longer line up correctly once we do.

We've tried applying the method laid out here: [URL] ........ (and the link referenced in the bottom) but are still having trouble getting the surface to work.  We've tried offsetting as little as 0.25' and as much as 5' with the feature line draped over the existing surface, but it seemed that the greater the offset, the greater the discrepancy.

Just to make sure we even tried that correctly - should the breaklines that we add be standard or non-destructive?  (I've tried it both ways with little success either way, so I don't know if it matters much in this instance, but perhaps for future reference it would work.)

I've attached a screen shot of our surfaces.  The pink and green lines are the proposed contours, the white dashed are the existing.  The outer red line is offset 0.25'.  As I've mentioned, we've tried offsetting various amounts with decreasing success.
